But That Display!
on May 24, 2022
Posted by: RonH
The ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 Flip is a mid-range laptop with some very high-end features, most notably the 15.6 inch OLED display.
The body of the laptop is aluminum and the top has a textured matte finish that looks great but is horrible with fingerprints. At just under 4 pounds, it's easy to carry and won’t weigh down your backpack.
The backlit “ErgoSense” keyboard is just ok in my opinion. The key spacing is great and the travel is good but the feedback is a bit too rubbery for me and I feel like it slows down my typing. Another issue I have with the keyboard is there is no indication that the Num Lock button is on or off. One thing I do like about the keyboard is with the FN options. I really like f11 for screen snips. Having this as a single hot key is really convenient. (Windows-Shift-s also works) There are also keys to disable the trackpad, camera and mic and a key for MyASUS. The keyboard also has white backlighting and it's easy to see the white letters on black keys. The “ErgoSense” trackpad is a diving board format with no distinct buttons. The feel is nice and the size is right although I would have preferred a haptic feedback trackpad the likes of the Microsoft Studio Laptop or MacBook Pro.
Performance is very good all around. The 12th generation i7 12700H chip has 14 cores, 6 performance and 8 efficiency and maxes at 4.70 GHz. I had no trouble running Adobe Photoshop or Premiere Pro. There is 16GB of DDR5 Ram and 512GB SSD. I got just under 2500 MBs read and writes on the SSD.
If you’re into benchmarks - Geekbench 5 Battery: single core 1456, multi-core 8750, and open CL 19352. Plugged in: single-core 1707, multi-core 11747 and open CL 19573
Cinebench battery: single core 1310 and multi-core 10451. Plugged in: single-core 1726 and multi-core 12630.
I’ve had the fans spin up a couple of times and you can hear them but they are not loudest i've heard. You can select between Performance, Standard and Whisper fan modes in the MyASUS app.
There is no discrete graphics card for this model. EVO graphics are handled on the CPU.
As far as connectivity, the Q519 comes with two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports that support fast charging, a 3.2 gen USB-A port, headphone/microphone combo jack and HDMI port and a Micro SD card reader. I would have preferred a full-size SD reader. Finally, there is a barrel connector for the power supply.
But that display!
The ASUS Zenbook Pro has a 2880 x 1620 (2.8K) resolution OLED display that is absolutely stunning to look at, as it should be - and most likely the reason you buy this laptop. The 120 Hz refresh rate gives silky smooth movement when scrolling web pages, watching action flicks or playing games. Colors just pop and you just can’t get blacks like this on any other display!
The MyASUS app allows you to customize the display to your liking. I like the Vivid setting but you can also switch display modes between sRGB, Adobe RGB and 100% DCI-P3 depending on your needs. Another thing you can do is dim background applications with Target Mode. This helps protect the OLED display but I like it just to keep focus on the active window. This is really helpful. MyASUS also allows you to customize the performance and input settings - putting everything in one convenient location.
The ASUS Q529 has a Harman Kardon four speaker Dolby Atmos stereo sound system. I thought the speakers sounded good for a laptop - having decent mids and highs, however, as expected, they lack deep pounding bass. Volume is probably the best I've heard from a laptop and there is no distortion at full volume. I was also really impressed with the Atmos sound - hearing surround sound all around me, including behind me coming from a laptop is pretty impressive.
This is a convertible laptop so the screen flips all the way over and supports the ASUS Pen 2.0 which is not included. This is a big miss in my book for all laptop manufacturers. When you push a feature along with the hinge to allow you to use the feature but don't include the most important part…
There is a 720P webcam in the top bezel of the display. The camera supports Windows Hello facial recognition and does a good job of it. There is no fingerprint reader. The webcam has good video and works well in low light. There are several webcam effects in the MyASUS app for background blur, eye or motion tracking and lighting. The microphones have an AI driven noise suppression that works pretty well but the voice on the other end does sound a bit muffled and overly processed.
Overall, for the price, this is a fantastic, well-built laptop that you have to see and hear to believe. Buy it for the display but use it for the performance. Even though I personally hate the keyboard, I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well-balanced price vs performance laptop with an absolutely awe-inspiring display.

Dude, you got a Dell!

No, it's a GE Profile Automatic Espresso Machine.
There is a lot to like about the GE Profile Automatic Espresso Machine, and several areas of improvement.
I’ve had numerous espresso machines, both automatic and manual so I was excited to try GE’s newest automatic model. I really like the concept of fully automatic (bean to cup) espresso makers - the convenience of just pressing a button and not having to fill/tamp/discard the grinds after each shot.
The GE Profile is considered a compact machine and yes, it really does resemble a small computer tower. I’m not sure about compactness, it's about as wide as a regular coffee maker and about twice as deep. It fits nicely under cabinets however placing it under a cabinet requires you pull it out to refill the water and bean container. The waste ground container empties easily from the front of the unit and the brewing mechanism is on the left hand side.
Unboxing was simple but used too much styrofoam - I would have preferred cardboard packing materials. Setting up the machine was as easy as filling beans and water and plugging the unit in. Every time you turn the unit on it does a rinse cycle. You can place a cup under both spouts and use the rinse to warm the cup or just let it go into the drip tray. Customizing the settings, yes, there’s an app for that - and you need it. I guess GE assumes that if you can afford this machine, you can also afford a smartphone.
Making your beverage is as simple as pressing a button. The machine grinds the beans, tamps them, brews a shot then discards the puck into the waste bin. Making your beverage taste the way you want can take some work. The machine offers Espresso, Americano, My Brew, Hot Water and Steam buttons on the top of the unit along with warning lights directly behind to tell you to add water, stir the beans, empty the waste container, check the brew unit and rinsing. The brew spout is adjustable and also has a light to light the cup and a ring of lights on the top to let you know what it's doing.
A word of warning: Beans
If your selected brand of coffee beans has any oil on them at all this machine will choke. The instructions mention multiple times not to use oily beans so take heed, they mean it. Also, unlike my previous automatic machine, there is no access to the grinder for cleaning like there is to the brew unit.
Once you find a bean that works and you’ve determined the grind size with the knob, you have to move to the app to determine the amount of grind time and water to suit your taste. You can also change some of the defaults of grind time and water dispensed with other beverages as well.
Using the app, you can program the My Brew button to make your customized beverage of choice. Unlike many espresso makers, the GE Profile only makes a single shot at a time - there is no double gounds/double water setting. You can however use the My Brew feature to have it make a single, double or triple shot espresso it just does them one after the other. My Brew will also do Lungo, Ristretto and Red Eye. You can not use the My Brew feature to stack drinks like do a triple shot then an Americano, a feature I would love to see added. I have My Brew set to triple shot and the first shot is always short. The other thing I couldn't find in the app was where to adjust the brew temperature. Since receiving this espresso machine there have been two software updates. Both have gone smoothly but my customizations were erased and needed to be redone.
This model has the steam wand and does come with a frothing pitcher. You can set the length of time for steam in the app then just press the Steam button to froth your milk for cappuccinos. It worked as expected and pumped plenty of steam.
After you brew eight shots, the machine tells you it's time to empty the waste bin. This is easy but does require removal of the magnetic drip tray to access the drawer.
Like all espresso machines, it takes some trial and error to get the coffee you like and the GE Profile Automatic Espresso Machine is no different.
The GE Profile Automatic Espresso Machine can make a decent cup of espresso. Oily beans are problematic for any grinder but this machine seems to handle them especially poorly. I don’t like that you have to use an app to configure the machine, I don’t like the short first shot when set as “My Brew” and I don’t like that there is no X2 feature. I give it four stars and would recommend it to a friend.

Stylish Ultrasonic Humidifier
on January 25, 2022
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
I have always been mesmerized by the silent vapor cloud from ultrasonic humidifiers and the Kyvol HD3 is not different.
The HD3 holds 4.5 liters of water and has a smart stylish design. It has a variable mist control knob but does not have a humidistat. There is a sponge filter on the bottom of the unit and a replacement is included. There is also a cleaning brush. Attached to the filling cap is a container of beads that are supposed to help with odor. The instructions do not speak to the odor filter regarding future replacement.
Like most humidifiers, the nozzle rotates to direct the mist. Under the nozzle on this model there is a handle you can use to carry the container, however, this whole compartment along with the handle gets pretty wet from use.
My electric furnace is brutal at drying out my apartment in the winter time but the Kyvol HD3 has been able to increase and maintain the humidity in my 300 square foot living room. There are no output specifications listed but in my use, a full tank will last 15 hours on high. This equates to about 10 ounces of water output each hour.
Depending on the mineral content of your water, ultrasonic humidifiers are notorious for leaving a white mineral residue. I have not noticed this yet with the Kyvol. Switching to filtered or distilled water can help if you experience this.
I give the Kyvol HD3 Ultrasonic Humidifier five stars, it is competitively priced and very stylish. I would recommend it to a friend.

A Nice Improvement
on December 30, 2021
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
I’ve been using another sonic toothbrush for a while now and have tried the original Sonic Fusion in the past but felt the vibrations were considerably slower. The Sonic Fusion 2.0 improves on the speed and gives you two speed choices.
The unit comes with a compact head but full-sized heads are available. I would have liked it if it included one of each size brush head. Like most electric toothbrushes the Sonic Fusion has a two minute timer and signals every 30 seconds to change brushing locations. The clean feels almost as good as a trip to the dentist. The unit comes with a travel case for the brush which can be used without the water flosser. Waterpik’s information says the brush charge lasts for 30 minutes so traveling for more than a couple of weeks would require you to pack the whole unit which is a little cumbersome.
I like that this combines the features of a Waterpik flosser along with the toothbrush. There are three modes, brushing, flossing and both brushing and flossing. The pressure on the flosser is adjustable to your liking and it does a good job of removing food from between your teeth although it is a bit messy, however this is no different than using a Waterpik from the past.
Overall I really like the convenience of using just one device to brush and floss. I give the Waterpik Sonic Fusion 2.0 five stars and would recommend it to a friend.

A Revolution - Not Revolutionary
on December 14, 2021
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
Growing up in the age of portability with cassettes and then CD’s, I’ve never owned a record player. Inheriting a small album collection, I now had a need for one. Enter the Victrola Revolution GO.
Like the pressed-board boxes of yore, the Revolution GO is a suitcase style record player with a few twists. First, the Revolution is completely self-contained and battery operated. One and done. Second, you can stream your records via bluetooth to the speakers of your choice and third, you can connect the built-in speaker via bluetooth to your phone or iPod and stream whatever you like. Two out of three ain’t bad…
As a portable record player, the Revolution GO worked as expected. Everything is controlled with one button, power, bluetooth and volume. There is a light on the button that guides you along with spoken voice from the speakers.
Place your record on the platter, lift the needle, slide it to the record and let it down, the platter spins and your record plays. It is important to note that this is not an automatic turntable. When the needle gets to the end of the record the platter just stops. You can turn the auto-stop on or off. It does support 33, 45 and 78 RPM playback speeds and a 45 adapter is included. The arm has a slide lock to hold it secure while you are traveling with the player and there is an arm lift lever which has a dampened release to gently place the needle down on your records. As far as the built-in speakers go, they were just ok for me. They had decent volume. Mids and highs were good but bass was severely lacking. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as left and right RCA jacks to hook up to a stereo system, and as I mentioned previously, you can stream your vinyl via bluetooth. Connecting the Revolution GO to my bluetooth sound bar provided a much improved listening experience.
You can also use the player as a speaker by connecting it to your phone or mp3 player via bluetooth. I could see the need for this if you've run through all your records and want to keep the party going. As the built-in speakers are not great, I imagine that this will be a feature that doesn't get much use. Interestingly, there is not a separate line in connection - only bluetooth.
The Revolution GO seems well constructed and is made entirely of plastic. It weighs in at 6 pounds 7 ounces. To tote the Revolution Go, there is a nice flip-up handle and you can also attach the included guitar strap, another feature which is cute but not necessary in my opinion. There is also a compartment underneath the player that houses the power adapter - a nice touch.
The included rechargeable battery is rated for about eight hours and the player says the battery level when you power it up.
There seems to be a lot of competition with these vintage suitcase record players, some (Victrola included), with offerings as low as a quarter the price of the Revolution GO. At this price point, I would have liked to see an automatic turntable or at least automatic arm return at the end of a record, a remote or app to control at least the volume, some form of audio capture, either by phone app, software or USB connection, and a better/removable bluetooth speaker. Without these additional features, I don't feel that just adding a battery justifies a ~50-70% increase in price.
I give the Victrola Revolution GO four stars, it's cute, completely portable, does everything it’s supposed to and it was a hoot to hear the snap, crackle and pop of old vinyl. Compared to the rest of the Victrola lineup, unfortunately, I don't feel Victrola created as much of a revolution as they could have. At this price point, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Nice wireless charger
on November 25, 2021
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
I’ve been using wireless chargers for years but have to say this is the most stylish one I have. I really like the flip top and the fact I can charge my phone along with my Liberty Pro 3 earbuds at the same time.
The base is heavier than expected and the magnet is strong and holds my iphone 12 pro max without a case without issue. It is not strong enough however to keep it upright without a magsafe case. Adding an inexpensive case solves this.
I like the tilt function which allows you to see the phone and watch videos while still charging. The hinge seems sturdy and strong. While this is designed for iPhones, keeping it flat will charge any phone/device that has wireless charging
The included 20 watt brick is great for travel if you don't have enough room to include the base as well.
If I’m being picky, my only complaint is that this only provides a 7.5 watt charge power rather than the 15 watt that magsafe can provide. Including the second charging pad makes up for this.
I give the MagGo 2-in-1 wireless charger 5 stars and recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish wireless charger.

My new go to earbuds!
on November 24, 2021
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The Liberty 3 Pro earbuds are my second audio product from Soundcore by Anker and I have to say I am really impressed!
Setup was simple and straightforward, starting with downloading the Soundcore app.
Unlike other earbuds, the battery case has a slide back top rather than a pop-up lid. The buds come with wings attached but you have to put the tips on according to your size. Getting the buds connected was straightforward and required a firmware update first thing. (there has since been an additional update). At this point you are good to go but I highly recommend doing the HearID tests to customize your sound and noise cancelation settings.
On sound, I have to say these are the best earbuds I’ve used. There is a selection of pre-set equalizer settings along with a custom setting if you want to adjust even more. My favorite is the HearID setting which is so crisp it sounds like you are right in the front row.
My wife says the active noise cancelling works great! She tried speaking to me multiple times while I was wearing the buds and I couldn't hear a word from her :-) There are three ANC settings, Normal, HearID and Transparent. All worked better than expected.
Regarding fit, there are four tips and four ear wings to choose from and the app has a fit test to ensure your sizing is correct. I have to say these are the most comfortable earbuds I have. I was able to wear them for hours at a time and if not for them playing, I could forget they were even in.
The Liberty 3’s also work great for phone calls and teams meetings. My voice was clear and understandable with no excessive background noise.
Battery life is fantastic. Rated at eight hours, I had no trouble going through the whole day. If you do need a bit more, a 15 minute charge in the case gets you up to three more hours. Out of the box, they were only about 30% charged but this was enough to get setup and update the firmware. Charging is available via USB-C and wirelessly.
My favorite thing of all though is the White Noise in the Discovery section. You can create your own personal ambient sounds or choose from pre-made sounds. Great for relaxing and meditation. There is also a large selection of new artists and music powered by Lum.
Overall, I love the Liberty 3’s and they are my new go to earbuds, replacing my Sony XM3’s. The customization features from the app are second to none and the sound with the HearID is unlike anything I’ve heard so far. I highly recommend these earbuds.

Decent basic mesh Wi-Fi system
on November 10, 2021
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
Working from home, my wi-fi signal on the 2nd floor is less than optimal - enter the ARRIS SURFboard mAX Pro Wireless-AX6600 mesh system. Setup starts by scanning the QR code in the box to install the SurfBoard Central app, setup an account and follow the steps. My router is connected to my FIOS by CAT6 cable, making setup pretty simple, I just moved the cable from their router to the Surfboard. While setup with the app was successful, I did need to repeat a couple of the steps a few times to get setup to complete. There was a firmware update right out of the gate that took a couple of minutes and connecting the satellite extension took another few minutes but connected right away. Overall it took less than 15 minutes to get the router and satellite working.
Once everything was setup connecting my devices to the new router was quick and painless. You choose your network name and password during setup. If you are replacing a router, simply use the same name and password and things should move to the new network without issue. Signal strength is now greatly improved on my 2nd floor and speed maxes out everywhere in my home.
Unlike all the other routers I've had, the only way to set the ARRIS up is by using their app. There is no web-based control panel option. The app allows you to set up basic network settings and IP configurations, set parental controls which allow you to manually shut down users and schedule available time, and turn a guest account on or off. You can also see all the connected devices and their signal.
There is only one additional Lan port to connect a wired device and there is no USB port. The SURFboard also does not have a WPS button to press to connect devices.
There are Amazon Alexa skills you can add that allow you to control some of the features like disable the guest account. A nice touch but I personally don't see myself using this feature.
I like the SURFboard mAX Pro mesh system. The strong signal is much better than the provider's equipment and setup was a breeze. I give it four stars because I don’t believe it lives up to the “pro” name and price, however, for a basic mesh system it does everything it claims to do. I would recommend it to a friend.

Night Owl is excited to offer our U.S. designed and engineered 4K Wi-Fi Bluetooth Network Video Recorder with Wi-Fi IP 4K Spotlight Cameras and Pre-Installed Hard Drive. With secure app-based Bluetooth setup, there is no need to connect a TV or monitor for setup or viewing (optional). You can easily configure your system right from the app on your smartphone or tablet with the Bluetooth connection. While a TV or monitor is not required, with Google Assistant you can use simple voice commands to stream camera footage directly to your TV or monitor, all while remaining hands free. Each camera has 2-Way audio (talk and listen) as well as a built-in siren and preset voice alerts. From within the app, you can easily activate the built-in siren, startling intruders and sending them packing. Have a guest but can’t get to them? Use a preset voice alert to let them know! Smart detection technology including human detection, facial capture, and vehicle alerts reduce the risk of false alarms, keeping you safe and well protected. Facial capture lets you see who is on your property by snapping a photo and sending the image to your Smart Device. WooHoo - Setup is now complete!

The Night Owl Bluetooth Wi-Fi NVR (Network Video Recorder) is a wireless security camera system that comes with four 4K HD cameras that also have two-way audio and a 1TB hard drive to hold your recordings.
After unpacking everything, and there is a lot to open, setup was easy and Night Owl has videos to walk you through the whole process. The base should be connected to your router and an ethernet cable is provided. The Night Owl Protect app is the preferred method to set up the device; however, you can also hook up a television/monitor and the included mouse. I used the app method. After downloading the app and setting up an account, I plugged in the cameras (they are Wi-Fi, not wireless) and the base found them all. The cameras connect via Wi-Fi signal which comes from the base, not your home internet system. I like that the cameras talk to you and say “WooHoo - Setup is now complete.
The image that comes from the 4K cameras is crystal clear and they have a 100 degree field of view which was more than enough to cover my needs. There is a double bulb LED light on the camera that comes on when it senses motion and allows for night vision up to 100 feet. The LED’s are programmable via the setup menu and can be turned off. Night vision seems to be better when it's in black & white rather than color but is usable and clear. You can program the cameras to speak when motion is detected by saying “Smile”, that you are unavailable or play a siren. You can also use two-way communication to talk to your visitors. The app provides alerts when motion is detected but as noted below, you may have many false alerts. These can be turned on or off.
You can adjust the sensitivity of the cameras, either low, medium or high. You can also define motion zones and select if you want the camera to detect humans, heads and vehicles. I did notice that even on low sensitivity, the motion detection is very sensitive and gave multiple alerts for a camera that was in an empty room and was sensing shaddows due to the way cameras sense motion by changes in pixels rather than a separate motion detector like on an outdoor light fixture (this is similar to several other camera systems I’ve used as well). I suppose it's better to have too many recordings than miss the one that gets away. This also gave me a sense of “boy who cried wolf” and I turned alerts off as I am using this setup for enhanced camera coverage along with my Simplisafe alarm system. There is no connectivity between the Night Owl system and any security services to automatically send police.
You can view the cameras live and if needed, download recorded video directly to your phone as well as to a USB flash drive or external hard drive. You can also add this to your google home if you have a Nest display. Just tell Google to view a camera and it shows up on the display. Unfortunately, Amazon Alexa is not supported. Hopefully this will be added in the future. Finally, there is CMS computer software for both PC and Mac that mirror the mobile app but not listed in the material.
There is no connectivity between the Night Owl system and any security services to automatically send police.
I really like this Night Owl system, especially when using the app and highly recommend it to anyone looking to add a camera system to their home.

A great printer

The HP Smart Tank inkjet printer comes well packaged with a lot of attention to detail. I like that it's wrapped in a plastic bag with handles to use to get it out of the box. All the loose parts are taped down, both inside and out.
Setup was simple and the software guides you through everything step by step with pictures and animations. Once the heads and inks are installed, you print an alignment page then scan it and the printer automatically fixes any misalignments. I had it up and working in about 15 minutes. Once the printer was set up, adding it to other computers was easy, they all found it quickly and added the drivers. You can print from a pc without installing the HP Smart Ap but for full functionality, the app needs to be installed. The printer also has a web server that you can use for some features. There is an LCD display on the front of the machine that has various icons to assist. I found the LCD a little difficult to see in dim light.
The printer doesn't use combination print head/ink cartridges; rather, the printhead and ink tanks are separate, allowing you to simply refill the ink tanks as needed. Full bottles of ink are included in the box which HP says will print 8000 pages of color and 6000 pages of black. Replacement bottles of ink cost about $15 each making the cost per page much lower than cartridge-based printers.
Prints on plain paper are very good with deep rich blacks and nice color accuracy. I didn't notice banding on images or solid blocks of color. The printer has auto-duplexing for printed pages only and the software has options for which side you want the edge to be on as well as allowing you to print multiple pages per sheet to save paper. The printer will take paper sizes from 3x5 index cards to 8.5x14 inch legal paper, envelopes and photo stock. All paper stock is placed in the paper tray; there is no single sheet bypass feed.
Printing photos on plain paper and on generic glossy photo paper using plain paper settings were acceptable, however when using the glossy paper setting with my paper stock they came out much darker and unusable. I believe this is the fault of my generic paper rather than an issue with the printer. As with all printers, using recommended/brand paper results in a better finished product.
There are dedicated buttons for copying; however, the HP Smart app is required for scanning. There is no dedicated button on the machine to initiate a scan and have it sent to a printer. The app has several other nice features like Mobile Fax. Using the app, you can send a fax to anyone without having to connect your printer to a landline. Unfortunately, this only works for sending, you are not able to receive faxes. You can also set up shortcuts for features you use regularly. My only complaint with the app is you have to set up an account and sign in to use many of the features.
Overall, I really like this HP Smart Tank printer. There are a couple of things I would have expected on a device of this price: backlit LCD and single sheet paper feeder for example. I also believe that printer manufacturers are going to get their money either through ink refills or initial cost of the device. While per page costs for ink are considerably less, this is one of the more expensive inkjet printers I've seen. All things considered, this is a great printer and I highly recommend it.

Can this stove be used on a deck?

Per the instructions, this should be placed on a non-flammable surface like concrete and not used on decks, either wood or composite wood. While this is a compact unit, it does get very hot.
