My new go-to earbuds
on September 26, 2023
Posted by: RonH
The Marshall Motif II A.N.C. earbuds are the comfiest earbuds I've tried. They come with medium ear tips, but they also include small and large tips in the box. The mediums fit me perfectly and created a secure seal that blocked out noise.
The charging case is about the same size as Apple AirPods and has a textured finish that keeps it from slipping out of my pocket. It has USB-C charging and wireless charging. I like that the indicator light stays green when it's fully charged instead of just turning off. The Motif IIs claim six hours of battery life in the earbuds and an additional 24 hours in the case. I've been using them for almost a week on the initial charge.
Pairing the Motif IIs was a two-step process: first I paired them with my phone, then I downloaded the Marshall app and paired them with it. The app isn't required for pairing, but it does give you some additional features. The earbuds remember the last eight devices they were paired with and can connect to two devices at once. However, unlike my other earbuds, they won't automatically switch between the two devices. For example, I usually pair my headphones with both my phone and laptop, and I listen to streaming from my phone. When I get a call or notification on my laptop, the earbuds pause the stream on my phone and switch to my Teams call or play the notification. When the call is over, the stream from my phone resumes.
But how do they sound? I was surprised at how great the Motif IIs sound. Their default equalizer setting is Marshall Signature sound, which has no equalization, and it sounds great. The bass is punchy, the highs are crisp, and the mids are clear. Along with Marshall sound, there are four more equalizer presets and a custom option.
Phone calls sounded clear to the other person, but there's no sidetone (the feedback you hear), which I personally find a bit disorienting.
Noise canceling worked well, blocking out most of the subway noise during my commute. Transparency mode was okay at volume levels below about 50%, but it's not something you would want to try to have a conversation over. There are low/medium/high sliders for both ANC and Transparency modes so you can select the level that's most comfortable for you.
The Marshall Motif II A.N.C. earbuds are my new go-to earbuds for everything outside my office. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for great-sounding earbuds.

Be EPIC!
on September 11, 2023
Posted by: RonH
The Ultimate Ears EPICBOOM is my second “Boom” product - following a MegaBoom 3. I have to say I was surprised in several ways with the EPICBOOM. First, comparing against the MegaBoom makes me realize just how good the “Boom” products really are. Secondly, the amount and quality of sound that comes out of this somewhat compact speaker is nothing short of amazing.
EPICBOOM has deep rich bass you can feel, clean mid’s and bright clear highs. Volume is loud enough to fill a decent sized backyard.
Of course there’s an app for the EPICBOOM that offers four equalizer presets and the ability to create and save your own. My favorites are Deep Relaxation and the “Outdoor Boost” button. Directions say this button gives a 1db boost but for me it makes this little speaker sound like a surround sound system giving it a really immersive sound. Also, the EPICBOOM has both left and right channels to help explode your sound. Using the app you can also set up your one-touch playlist from Amazon, Apple Music or Spotify. Once you set this up, simply pressing the “Magic” button will start playing your pre-defined playlist.
The app also has a “PartyUp” feature that allows you to connect up to 150 boom speakers. Pairing my MegaBoom and EPICBOOM together was successful and sounded great when it worked. Unfortunately, there were a lot of drop outs and catch ups making PartyUp difficult to listen to. I imagine this is something that can be fixed with firmware updates.
Rated for 17 hours, you can expect to get a full day’s use out of the speaker then connect it to your charger with USB C.
The EPICBOOM is IP67 rated so no worries about the beach or pool and it floats. There is a carry strap that's held down magnetically but I would have preferred the strap be more a solid strap allowing you to hold it like a mug rather than a purse.
Overall I really like the EPICBOOM and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great speaker at this price point.

So much Wow!
on August 31, 2023

When you first see the Yoga 9I it's a sight to behold. The stylish design looks just as good in your home office as it does in a luxury office.
The 31.5 inch 4K monitor is brilliant and crisp although the glossy finish can be a little reflective. Unfortunately, there is not an auto brightness setting that I can find. It will light up a room at night. Also note, this is not a touch screen as indicated in the description.
The Yoga comes with a decent keyboard and mouse which share a single dongle that's hidden inside the mouse. They also have bluetooth settings and can switch between two additional devices so once you set up the PC with the dongle, you can switch to bluetooth and get your USB port back.
The base contains the PC part of the unit and this has a 13th generation Intel I9-13900H that has 14 cores and 20 threads. There are 16 gigs of Ram and a 512 gig SSD which make this a very snappy computer. Programs are fast and responsive.
For the geeks the Yoga 9I gets a Geekbench single-core score of 2763 and multi-core score of 13212 and a Cinebench multi-core score of 15996. Heat is handled well. I got the fans to spin up and at top speed you can hear them but they were not obnoxious.
There is a wireless charger on the top of the base, a nice touch.
There are two USB A and two USB C ports along with an HDMI port on the back of the base for added connectivity. Interestingly, one of the USB C ports is video in and the other is video out so you can connect a laptop to share the screen. One downside is the location of the ports. Being located in the rear of the machine is nice for aesthetics however, functionally, it can be difficult to access and will require the unit to not be flush against the back wall of a desk.
The 5MP front facing camera does great with Windows Hello, however I found that for pictures and video calls it's just ok. There is a camera shutoff switch on the front right side of the base for privacy.
Speakers sound great. There are speakers in the base and a subwoofer on the back of the screen. Volume gets loud enough to fill a room if you’re watching videos or listening to music. There is also Dolby Atmos for both PC Speakers and headphones to enhance your listening.
Lenovo pre-installed its Lenovo Vantage program which gives you an at-a-glance of your system and some settings along with your warranty information. I don't know if this is designed as a one size fits all program or if it's specific to each unit however, it seems to show the PC as a laptop (which it pretty much is).
Unfortunately, repairability is minimal. According to the manual, there are no personal repairable parts in the Yoga. You can not upgrade the ram on these but if you are inclined, you can upgrade/replace the M.2 SSD however, it is buried pretty deep in the base and not something for the weak at heart to attempt - it requires a pretty thorough tear down. You can find the repair manual on the Lenovo support site.
Overall I think the Lenovo Yoga AIO 9i is sophisticated elegance and will look and work great in your home office or reception desk.

At just over an ounce, the Crucial X9 pro slips easily into your pocket, backpack or camera bag. You can even attach it to your key ring to keep it handy.
Unlike some other portable SSD’s I’ve got, the drive ships with just a short USB C to USB C cable, keep this in mind if your device doesn’t have USB C.
I like that the bottom of the drive has a slight rubber coating so it doesn’t slide around on the desk. I also really like the location and brightness of the activity light which is located inside the cutout for a lanyard or keyring. It is IP55 rated for water, dust and sand resistance. It is not however waterproof.
The X9 has a rated speed of 1050 MB/s however, my test got a respectable 850 and 900, similar to my T7 Shield. I had no trouble editing photos and handling light video work directly from the drive.
The X9 was recognized by all my devices including my iPad and worked flawlessly.
If I had one desire, it would be nice that the X9 came with a built-in USB C plug so you don’t have to carry two pieces with you.
If you are looking for a compact SSD storage solution I highly recommend the Crucial X9 Pro SSD.

It's a start

The Smart Ultra Soundbar appears to be a follow-up product to the Bose Smart Soundbar 900.
The Ultra Soundbar is sleek with a glass top. There are only two touch-sensitive buttons on it, microphone mute and action button.
Physical setup requires just two included cords, power and HDMI. You can also use the included Toslink digital optical cable if your television doesn't have eARC capability.
Once you have the soundbar connected you need to download and install the Bose Music app which is where my trouble starts. As an early adopter of tech, I am running the beta version of IOS on my devices, unfortunately, the current Bose app is not compatible with the beta and has not yet been released for the upcoming IOS update. Getting past this hurdle, the app immediately recognized the soundbar and setup continued smoothly. Once the initial setup was finished the next step is to connect the ADAPTiQ headset and calibrate the sound to your room by sitting in five different locations in the room while the bar plays a series of sounds.
The remote is minimalist, having only 8 buttons - volume, power, source and play/pause. It's the same small form factor used on my iPod speaker dock. I like that when you press the bluetooth source button the soundbar goes into pairing mode and doesn’t require the app to change pairing.
According to the app, the Ultra Soundbar only works with Amazon Alexa. I have other Bose speakers that include Google Home as well but it is not an available option for the Ultra. Alexa works as expected by simply speaking your wake word and command. There is a linear light bar that acknowledges your voice commands. The mute touch button mutes the microphone for Alexa and shows a red light when it's muted.
Now the reason you buy a soundbar - how does it sound?
I’m using the Ultra in a mid-size room and I was surprised by the soundbar, especially the bass since it doesn’t come with a sub. In bass-heavy movies the earth didn’t shake but you could feel the rumble from across the room. The Ultra has nice stereo separation and sound stage. Mid’s and highs sound great and you can boost bass, treble, center and height in the app but there are no presets to choose from. I like that the Ultra sounds crisp even at higher volume levels. Volume levels show on the tv but not consistently. There are no displays on the Ultra and the linear bar does not react to volume changes. Additionally, the volume is not as responsive as I would like, you notice a decent gap between pressing the button (on any remote). I did find the easiest way to change the volume is via Alexa and telling it what level you want.
The Ultra tries hard at the Atmos/surround but with no rear speakers it falls a bit flat for me. This was true with my previous LG soundbar as well. If you have a larger room you will definitely miss having the sub and satellite speakers.
Bose offers rear satellites and a subwoofer however, like all Bose products these carry a hefty price. Unless you are die-hard Bose, I think there are more cost effective options to consider.
I give the Bose Ultra Soundbar four stars and would recommend it only if you have a smaller space or can afford to complete the set.

The debate continues - cubes or chewable nuggets
on July 30, 2023
Posted by: RonH
The Insignia portable nugget ice maker is a great looking appliance and will fit in with pretty much any decor.
This is the third type of ice maker I have, including the half-moon model in my freezer and a gourmet/bullet maker.
Unboxing and setup was simple. The packaging is sturdy and does a great job at protecting the unit. Also, there is a protective film on the stainless portions of the unit. Run the unit through a cleaning process and discard the fist bin of ice.
Heavier than my portable bullet ice maker, I don't know that I would take this one camping like I do with the bullet model.
Doing some research, the Insignia model resembles the well-regarded GE Opal 2 which makes me think these units are manufactured by the same company and should have the same or similar internals. Another reviewer stated the side water tank from the Opal 2 fits this Insignia model.
Adding water. Unlike other machines, the holding bin slides out the front of the unit rather than lifting out the top so you have to remove the basket to fill it up. This works much better with a long neck bottle and was a little difficult with a larger Brita pitcher. Also, having an add-on water bin similar to the Opal would resolve this.
The Insignia does start producing nuggets in about 12 minutes however, unlike bullet cube makers, ice constantly trickles out a few pellets at a time rather than dumping 9 cubes per cycle.
It takes about an hour to get enough ice for a couple of cocktails. It takes about 3 hours 15 minutes to fill the bin so plan on bagging ice prior to any large parties or backyard bbq’s. A full bin fits nicely in a gallon ziplock bag and once frozen it breaks up nicely to keep the nuggets.
The rated ice production is about 44 pounds per day which is almost double to my bullet machine however, according to my math - 3.25 hours per 3.5# bin comes to just under 25 pounds per day.
I love that there is a light in the bin making it easy to see at a glance how full it is. It does shut off when the bin gets full and if not dumped, the sitting ice did freeze together in a large clump.
The included drip pan is a necessity when removing the drawer either to dump the ice or refilling the water.
Heat is a byproduct of any refrigeration and know that this unit really pumps it out, something to consider when deciding placement. It also seems a bit louder when first turned on but it does quiet down after running a few minutes.
Also know the manual recommends running the unit through a cleaning cycle every three days which seems to be the case with pretty much all nugget ice makers.
Regarding the filling process, I would have liked it if there was a port either on the top or side and a viewing window for the water level, similar to some coffee pots.
I give this unit five stars - I was going to take away one star for the filling and length of time to usable amounts of ice but these are by design, not faults in workmanship.
This model is one of the least expensive nugget/pellet machines I’ve seen and I recommend it to all fans of this form of ice.

Bring a Friend!
on July 22, 2023

This is my second TV wall mount and I have to say the difference in quality is amazing. This is holding my 75 inch TV and it's pretty incredible.
The hardest thing about the installation was getting concrete wall anchors from the hardware store. There are great videos on the Sanus site explaining the mount and documenting the installation process. I love that all the hardware is individually packaged and marked so you know which screws to use at each step. I also like how the TV hooks on to the mount. If you need to take it down, it's as simple as flipping a lever and lifting it off.
Fit and finish are excellent, including the covers over the hardware.
One thing you will want to consider with this mount is your cables. This mount allows the tv to come 20 inches away from the wall so you might need new longer cables to allow for the movement.
Regarding the movement, the mount feels secure and the tv moves easily with just one hand. I love being able to adjust the tv angles both up and down and side to side.
I recommend the Sanus full-motion mount to anyone looking for a sturdy, high-quality mount.

Great sounding earbuds
on July 17, 2023

Poly (formerly Plantronics) is a well-known brand for office and call center headsets. The Voyager Free 60 is a continuation of this tradition.
The Voyager Free 60 earbuds are similar to Apple EarPods in that they have a long stem that contains the touch sensor, microphones, and single-action button.
Charging the earbuds and case takes a couple of hours, but a quick charge of 15 minutes gives you an hour of use. The earbuds provide about 6 hours of mixed use, and the case provides two additional charges. The case can also be charged on a QI charger, which is very convenient.
Three sizes of ear tips are included: medium is pre-installed on the earbuds, and small and large sizes are included in the box. The earbuds are comfortable and fit well in my ears, and I am confident that they will stay in place.
The sound quality is excellent for phone calls and team meetings. My voice sounds as clear as if I were wearing a wired headset with a boom microphone. When playing music, the sound quality is comparable to my Sony and Soundcore earbuds, which is quite impressive. Keep in mind that these earbuds are designed for use with phone and meeting software, and in my opinion, they are the best available.
The app displays the battery levels of the earbuds and case, and it also controls the settings and active noise cancellation (ANC). The ANC was very effective at blocking out the hum of a window air conditioner. You can also select two levels of transparency: voice and surroundings.
Along with many other options, the app only has three equalizer choices: bass, flat, and bright, the bass setting provides more than ample bass for your favorite music. I would also prefer physical buttons for volume control instead of the swipe sensor, but that is just my preference. The sensor works well.
Overall, I highly recommend the Poly Voyager Free 60 earbuds for work and leisure use.

No more lost battery covers!

I really like the TERK rechargeable universal remote control.
The remote needed to be charged right out of the box. I was surprised that the initial charge took a couple of hours but expect it to last for many months of use. I also like that it's USB C rather than Micro-USB.
Code setup for the device was simple - find your brands from the code sheet, press the device button for two seconds, enter the code and finished. I had no trouble connecting it to three different televisions, Fios One cable box, Apple TV and two separate sound bars. Like other universal remotes, you can lock the volume and channel buttons to any source so if you want to control the soundbar volume when TV is selected, you can make that happen.
The remote has a backlight but it only works when you turn it on. On other remotes I have, the backlight button operates like an on/off and when it's on, the light comes on with every key press, not so on the TERK.
There are also four direct tune buttons on the bottom for Netflix, Disney, Hulu and YouTube; however, these only work if your original remote has similar presets. You can also use these for macros, combining up to 14 key presses for each source.
I give the TERK Rechargeable 8-Device Universal remote five stars and recommend it to anyone trying to clean up their viewing areas.

The picture is AMAZING
on July 2, 2023
Posted by: RonH
The 2023 Hisense U8K is a television that I never expected. I’ve always associated the Hisense brand with cost effective low to mid-range electronics but the U8K definitely shows a different side.
Unboxing and setting it up was straight forward. The first thing that impressed me is that there are two mounting locations for the legs. This is a 75” TV and I had a concern that it might not fit on my stand. Having two mounting points allows the set to fit on a smaller TV stand that my 75” Visio wouldn’t fit on.
Setting up the Google TV aspect was just as easy. Using my phone, I snapped the QR code and my Google account was transferred and the TV went through. There was an update that took about 10 minutes but once that was complete we were good to go. It also recognized my Apple Home and joined that as well.
Like many, I’ve cut the cable and am using streaming apps. One plus with this is I no longer need my Apple TV or Fire Stick. You can download all the apps you need from the Google Play store.
The picture on this TV is absolutely stunning. Colors are crisp and bright and with the mini led backlighting, blacks are truly black. I didn’t notice any blooming with white text on a black backgrounds.
Sound from the built-in speakers is really good and the bass from the subwoofer is deep and full. I imagine most people that get a set like this will also have a sound bar but if you don't, it's probably the best sound I've heard from onboard speakers.
Using the optical (SPDIF) output I did experience some issues with the volume raising and lowering on its own. Doing a google search, it seems this is a known issue on Hisense sets. I’m not sure if it's just a setting that needs to be changed or a firmware update.
I would like the apps and google interface to be a bit more responsive but that's just a preference. All the apps worked as expected.
This set does have a digital tuner in it that includes NEXTGEN Digital. Using a set of rabbit ears I was able to tune in over a dozen OTA stations in my area. The picture on OTA is just as good as streaming.
Overall, I think this is an incredible television set and I highly recommend it.

The Farenheit Flare is great for the backyard or for your outdoor adventures. This easy to transport fire pit will add warmth and atmosphere. Designed to reduce smoke so you can cozy up and enjoy yourself.

Can this stove be used on a deck?

Per the instructions, this should be placed on a non-flammable surface like concrete and not used on decks, either wood or composite wood. While this is a compact unit, it does get very hot.
