Again, A Sense if Wonder

I remember playing Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES when I was 9 or 10 and feeling like the game world was full of secrets and history that was just beyond my reach. That sense has left gaming as I've gotten older and games have gotten less interesting. Zelda has, put another way, become a bit less magical and wondrous with each new title.
Breath of the Wild is a step backward, in a sense then, to my childhood. The game has reinvented the Zelda series and turned it from an adventure game into an open world survival game wherein mystery and relics from an unknown time lie in every nook. Giving away anything more would spoil the surprises throughout and the joy of finding them.
No game comes closer to perfection and very few match the quality and thoughtful game design of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Frankly, I don't know that you'll play a game this year or next that is quite this good.

A Hardcore Game for the Hardcore Gamer

Nioh is kind of a marriage between Ninja Gaiden and Dark Souls—not as fast or as free-moving as the former and not as slow or methodical as the latter. It's made by Team Ninja of Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, so you can expect a difficult experience still. The game is very very loosely based on the Western Samurai William Adams who traveled to Japan in the 1600s. But it also has spirits, monsters, demons—fantasy stuff.
The gameplay is semi-standard action RPG—you have a few combos and a few types of attacks and a block—but revolves around switching between stance types as you battle your way through enemies whose attacks and behavior might be better matched by a stance with high damage and low speed or one opposite that with high speed and low damage. Or you might need to swap between stances constantly as you fight only one enemy or a small group. Its an interesting and complicating wrinkle in a game genre that's well-worn.
A great game with a solid pedigree, it's well worth your time (a few dozen hours of it at least) and money.

This is a game that should probably be $20 rather than $50 (one day it will be, and this point will be moot), but it's $50 because you have very little to play on the Switch right now beyond Zelda.
If you've played Bomberman in the past 30 years, you'll know the formula for multiplayer. That means you know the multiplayer will be fun though—if all something you've seen before. The single player campaign is new, however. And you can play the entire thing co-op, which is a much better way to play.

Best Battlefield Since Bad Company 2

There hasn't really been a bad Battlefield in a long time—probably ever—and that's likely due to the strength of the game's core gameplay mechanics. But some have been better than others based on the strength of their map design, class balance, and aesthetics.
Well this BF title doesn't reinvent the wheel, and if you've played a BF on this or the previous generation of consoles, you can pretty well start right up and play the game. So what's good and what's bad? Well, first, the classes are well designed with unlocks that are attainable. The vehicles range from useful to ridiculous with the inclusion of new, huge vehicles like trains and zeppelins who appear to help turn the tide of losing battles. The maps are mostly good, but none are so memorable or unique that you'll be recalling them fondly in a decade. And the game's WWI theme is beautiful and unique—something the series has been missing for some time.

Resident Evil 4 is without much counterargument, one of the best games ever made. That's really all you need to know considering its over a decade old.
But if you're wondering what makes this release special, it is, of course, the graphical upgrades. The game runs at 60 frames per second and in 1080p. The textures are improved from the original (though they're generally not very pretty), and you have the option of including some post-processing effects like motion blur if you want.
Just buy this game. It's so incredibly good.

It's been a long wait for another great Resident Evil game—arguably since the original release of 4 over a decade ago. This might not really be a Resident Evil game beyond its title, but it's every bit as suspenseful as the series has been.
On the topic of horror, the game's graphical fidelity allows for some truly disgusting and violent imagery. Blood, brains, and guts end up all over the place while you watch from a first person view. You'll see heads explode, get chopped in half. You'll see axes and blades sliced into torsos. You'll see hands and legs dismembered. It's real horror with that important hallmark of intense violence.
But the game ceases to be scary and surprising over time—what you'd expect from 12+ hours of the same kind of scares and violence. Instead, Resident Evil 7 focuses on survival and a pervasive sense of tension that comes from an un-killable enemy prowling the area or having to use every last bit of your very limited resource to fight off a few hallways of monstrous creatures.
All in all, Resident Evil 7's scare tactics might wear thin, but it never lets you down when it comes to suspenseful gameplay. A fun, stressful masterpiece.

Good Musao, Ugly Port, Not Really Zelda

First, this is really just a Zelda-themed musao game, not a traditional Zelda game in any sense. If you've played Dynasty Warriors or maybe Dragon Quest Heroes, you know what to expect. If you haven't played those games, you're in for a lot of easy button mashing to slay dozens of monsters at a time while driving objectives in a fairly large map (there are several of these maps). Capture a point and that point will begin to spawn allies. Lose a point, and you'll have to defeat more enemies on your way to further objectives. It's a bit more complex than that, but not really by much.
This is also not the original release of Hyrule Warriors. The original was released for WiiU, but this version has no less content. In fact, it has all the expansion content available for the Wii U and then some (and a DLC code for that extra content if you already own the Wii U version). Where this game gets ugly is in that port. Its gameplay doesn't suffer, and its content doesn't suffer, but its appearance does quite a bit.
That said, you're playing on a 3DS, and you probably don't expect anything as beautiful as a home console could produce. And if you're into hacking and slashing as Zelda characters mostly mindlessly while listening to Zelda tunes and regarding Zelda scenery, this is a pretty decent choice.

This amiibo is everything you'd expect from the Nintendo toys-to-life series. It's well detailed for the price, and it works with several Nintendo games. But it's more sturdy than you'd expect. The image of the toy shows a thin, clear plastic stand. The actual stand (at least the actual stand I received) was much thicker and was a yellow color. It's not quite as pleasing to look at as the picture, but I think it'll stand up to my young boys' play.
