This movie is based on the novel ''The Serpent And The Rainbow'' by Wade Davis, which is based on a true story. This movie however exaggerates the events that happened in real life.
It is about a man named Dennis Alan who is doing research in Haiti. He learns about a powder called the ''zombie powder''. It is called that because of the zombie-like effect it has on the body when it is blown in a person's face. Throughout the movie, he is being tormented by a Haitian man named Peytraud. Peytraud uses Voodoo magic to give Dennis terrifying nightmares, because he wants Dennis to leave the country. He even warns Dennis in person at one point to leave the country and stop butting in to their business. Dennis ends up falling in love with a woman in that country named Marielle. At one point, Dennis steals the powder, and goes back to America. During dinner with his employer, Peytraud uses Voodoo magic to possess the wife of Dennis's employer. She grabs a knife and tries to kill him, saying to him in Peytraud's voice ''You're going to die''. She then slashes him in the face. Dennis is freaked out and flies back to Haiti to try to stop Peytraud.
I like this movie a lot. I like the style and I find it is cool and well made.

This brought back memories for me since I was on the Studio 54 guest list and was there. This was a dance club like no other in the late 1970s. The patrons were either celebrities or those chosen at the front door because they had the "look" of the beautiful people. Inside was a fantasy of dancing and drugs, all lit by strobe lighting. And, as it had formerly been a theater, there was a even balcony for those almost private moments of brief romantic encounters. The waiters and bartenders were all gorgeous young men and wore nothing but shorts and a bow tie. This is a story of one of these guys.
Ryan Phillips is cast in the role of Shane O'Shea, a 19 year old from New Jersey who yearns for a star-studded life. He's chosen at the door and is big eyed with wonder and desire. Eventually, he becomes a waiter and later is promoted to bartender. There are a lot of women. And there is a lot of money. He even gets his picture in a magazine. Everything comes easy for him but he really is interested in a New Jersey girl who's a rising soap opera star.
The best role in the film goes to Mike Myers, who plays the legendary Steve Rubell who made it all happen. He's a strange bird with an eccentric personality and he does a lot of drugs. The money rolls in and he is in trouble with the IRS. But he's so puffed up with his own importance that he even brags about it on TV. Eventually, he's arrested and the party ends. But before it does, the filmgoers are treated to a small view of what it was back then.
I loved the nostalgia. Here was the music and the lights and the feeling of decadence that characterized a time that no longer exists. I lived through that time period. I remember. And so for those who are curious and those who want to step into the past for an hour and a half, I recommended this 1998 film.

As a fan of mythology and science fiction, I found this film to be very enjoyable. The story line was easy to follow and the acting was very good. Just enough humor and mayhem to keep it lively and interesting. The computer graphics were very impressive and I found the creatures to be well designed and interesting. The snakes which the wicked goddesses road as their mounts were awesome. The fact that the "gods' were larger and far more powerful than the mortals whom they ruled were well done. The struggle between the good and bad gods was kept in balance well enough to make the story line more believable.
Since I am a horror/sci-fi Blu ray collector I do go out of my way to get the steel book editions.

An action packed Sci-Fi movie with heart

Four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth in ruin. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal fifth wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope - if she can only trust him.
The 5th Wave is a really exciting sci-fi movie with great ideas, its a movie that don't need to show much in the way of aliens and high tech stuff like most sci-fi, instead we get a basic underline plan of what is happening and the movie is driven by a wonderfully strong young cast of great actors and actresses and an enjoyable story of family and saving those we care about, the movie of course has some top notch effects especially when we see the early waves destroy the earth, the movie has an invasion of the body snatchers feel to it mixed with other things, the movie is well paced and builds up really well over the run time and keeps you interested mainly due to a strong cast especially the lovely Chloe Grace Moretz who is a fantastic young actress who is probably at her best in this movie, the rest of the cast is good too, the soundtrack is great too, this is a top notch sci-fi that's really worth checking out if you want something that's original, easy on the brain and not too over the top, and has a bit more heart to the story.

Best documentary by a musical icon.

The best documentary I've ever seen about a musical icon! Most documentaries are written by other people-- and although this was produced by a team, there is so much footage of Amy from her childhood to her adulthood, that it could almost be mistaken that she made this documentary herself. I was stunned by the greatness of this documentary. I know Mitch Winehouse is not happy about how he was portrayed, but sometimes the truth hurts... It doesn't mean they didn't love each other, or that their relationship wasn't good. It's been said by several people that Mitch was living vicariously through Amy, because her singing career eclipsed his own. Not that he wasn't happy for her-- but it was stated by many people that he was a bit of an opportunist. I read Mitch's book about Amy, as well, and I found it to be a little bit self-indulgent on his part. I don't doubt that he made great strides to help Amy, but I think the documentary showed a more accurate account of her life. It was awesome to see so many of her friends and family and workers come together to talk about their love for her, their collaborations, her music, her talent... etc... And the point where she wins the Grammy was so incredible to be able to see her live reaction... My heart will never stop missing Amy, and this documentary gives me a little piece of her forever. I'm glad that this documentary showed the good, the bad, and the ugly. This is a Must-Buy for any true Amy Winehouse Fan.

I bought this after my previous Blu Ray player stopped working.I bought this 4K up-scaling player since I am buying a 4K TV later this fall. It will only up-scale Blu Ray movies, it will NOT play the new 4K disc that are at Best Buy in the black boxes. You need to buy a special Blu Ray player to play those. I will buy one of them when I buy my new 4K TV. The sound quality is incredible and very state of the art for home theater. Very happy with my purchase, and trust the Sony brand to outlast all other brands !

While it seems some of the moral lessons and conflicts in the source material seemed to fly right over the writer's head, it isn't a complete departure from the original story. The action, cinematography, and acting are all excellent. The writing is the only real complaint I have about the movie. The unnecessary changes the movie made to some of the characters and events in the story that, while I see where they were going, is still better in the source material. One change I didn't like at first but then enjoyed as the movie went on was Moses' pessimistic and rationalistic view of the world. At first I wasn't convinced but they didn't make him an edgy. His transition from agnostic to a religious leader was believable and relate-able. The story of Moses is a timeless story that anyone should have on their list to read and while not entirely true to the source material, this movie's scale and presentation more than make up for it.
The 3D version is the best way to watch this movie. I would recommend this to anyone.

You have a civil war movie with an Army of Frankensteins killing. I read in so many reviews it was like another Evil Dead. Stupid me read that and bought it. I should have downloaded it first and watched it.
Don't waste your money. This movie is so boring. I could not get into it. There was gore and somewhat decent effects but that will not save this horrible film.
I am so surprised because I buy all movies from Scream Factory & Shout Factory. They are one of my favorite for horror Blu rays. Unfortunately they should not have had this movie .
I wish I could get my money back. Don't waste your time.
