Great Price for a Good Shaver
on February 3, 2023
Posted by: AlanD963
The Norelco 5400 is a very good basic shaver from Philips. It has many of the features of the more expensive models at a very good price.
It’s a total wet/dry shaver. You can use it in the shower or bathtub, with shaving foam or gel or nothing. You can experiment to see what works best for you.
The pop-up trimmer is right there for your use. The shaver is cleaned by just running warm water over the shaving heads, then press the release button to expose the hair chamber, run water over that and you’re done.
This is the first Norelco shaver I’ve seen that uses a USB cable to charge the battery. The battery fully charged in less than an hour, then you get an hour of total shaving time before it needs to be charged again. The three element display lets you know the state of the battery in the shaver.
Included is a plastic cap to protect the rotary blades when travelling. It also features a ‘travel lock’ which protects the shaver from accidentally turning itself on in your luggage. It features a two-year warranty AND a 45-day money back guarantee. If you’ve used the shaver for that time and our still not happy with the shaver, you can send it back to Philips with your receipt and they’ll refund your money.
Bottom line, it’s a very reasonably priced shaver which matches the more expensive models in many ways. I compared the shave against a much more expensive Norelco and really couldn’t see or feel the difference. With the 45-day guarantee that they offer, it’s hard to see how you could go wrong.

ZOOOM !!!!
on December 3, 2022

My grandson’s face lit up when I gave him this scooter.
Anyhill has been around for awhile making quality scooters for adults, and they just came out with this economical one designed for kids. It’s lightweight, just 16 pounds and folds for easy carrying and storing.
You can set it for three different maximum speeds for your child, 4, 6 or 9 mph. Just push with your foot to get it started and you’re on your way. Totally silent.
It was easy to assemble; it comes with all the tools you’ll need. Just push the handlebar stem down over the larger bolt, then tighten it and the other two bolts. Everything else is already assembled. Attach the charger until it lights up green and it's ready to go. You’ll always know how much life you have in your battery, there’s a bright light on the side of the scooter. When its green you’ve got at least 50 per cent battery life, orange is over 20 and red is less than that. I noticed after several minutes when not in use, the scooter turns itself off, which is good because kids are likely to forget to do that.
All in all, this is a well-built electric rechargeable scooter that kids should really enjoy. As a parent or grandparent, just make sure they always are wearing a helmet and knee pads would be a great idea too.

An Easy Way to Make Your Photos Sparkle
on November 21, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
I’m reviewing this from the standpoint of a long time 35mm analog photographer who is learning to edit on the computer.
In the old days, I’d have my heavy photo enlarger, my stack of Kodak photosensitive paper, the analog timer, etc. ALL that is gone of course, you’ll find that stuff in museums. Editing now takes a totally different set of skills, and with just a program like Photoshop Elements 2023 for under $100 you can get even better results than you could with thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment in the old days.
When digital editing was first introduced years ago, a friend purchased Photoshop and I was excited to learn it. I tried it and it was like learning a foreign language. I’m glad I tried using his program before ordering mine. I thought digital editing was not for me.
Later, Adobe released Photoshop ELEMENTS for the rest of us. I bought my first copy years ago, and each year it gets better and becomes more intuitive. It actually takes you by the hand at first, examines your photo and makes suggestions on how to make it better. Three different levels are offered, ‘quick,’ ‘guided’ and ‘expert.’ As you’d expect, with ‘quick’ you just put in your photo and basically you are asking the program “what do you think? Just fix it.” With ‘guided’ it makes suggestions but you get to ‘participate’ more in the process. Using ‘expert", the training wheels are still there if you need them, but you do most of the work.
This 2023 version offers you more options for the perfect photo with more different ‘guided edits' than last year. For example, Elements offers you “Perfect Landscape.” Let’s say the day was drab when you took your picture. No problem; you can select a beautiful sky background. Last year’s version offered you 12 different skies, now you have 36 to choose from. So basically the 2023 version is very similar to last year’s, you just have more options of each feature to choose from.
Most important, the price for all these “AI” features is very inexpensive for what you’re getting. Also realize that you buy Elements outright. There’s no ‘subscription’ requirement as there is in regular Photoshop. This means you can use your copy of Elements forever and not pay another dime.
Bottom line, if you’re a long time photographer as I am, and want better, more professional photos without a great learning curve or expense, and don’t want to spend time looking at dozens of YouTube videos to get the ‘hang of it,’ I think you’ll like your investment in Photoshop Elements 2023.

If Only the Battery Lasted Longer
on November 4, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
As a Pixel phone owner for years, I was really looking forward to pairing it with an actual Pixel watch. When it finally arrived, I couldn’t wait to try it out. The watch is beautiful, the nicest looking smart watch I’ve seen. It comes with two different band sizes, some users with small wrists say they appreciate the smaller band because other similar watches have bands that are too big for them.
The watch connected very easily to the Google Pixel Watch App. (You do not connect it to the generic ‘Wear OS’ app like other Android watches.) The Pixel watch app handles everything and soon you are up and running.
If you’re familiar with the Android OS watches, you’ll be very comfortable with this Pixel, there won’t be a big learning curve. If you have a Fitbit account, it’ll be especially easy. I didn’t have one, but it was easy to download the app and set it up. It worked flawlessly with the watch.
Things I weren’t thrilled with:
The watch face is SMALL. Smaller than other smartwatches I’ve tried. To some, this may be a good thing, but to me, since you use the watch to get information as well as well as the time, the font is smaller, and you usually have to start scrolling to see most of the messages. Perhaps in the future, Google could create a Pixel watch and a larger “Pixel Pro” watch to satisfy people like me (I’m a fan of the Pixel Pro phone.)
But the biggest problem by far was the horrible battery life compared to many other smartwatches. I did NOT have the “Always On” enabled and yet after 24 hours I’d have less than 15 percent life. This means that you must charge the watch once a day, the same as your phone. A problem with doing this is that unlike my phone which I charge overnight, I’d like to use the Pixel watch to analyze my sleep pattern, which it did quite nicely, so you can’t charge the watch while you sleep. You must pick a time of day to charge the watch and it takes over an hour to get it back to 100 percent. Since this is a common complaint with this watch, I’ll bet the smart people at Google will be able to improve battery life on future Pixel watches, but I’d hate to pay so much for THIS watch and then read about a NEW google watch coming out later with a much-improved battery life. Another watch brand which uses Wear OS gives you well over two days of battery life setting it up the same way I’m using this watch.
Bottom line, the new Google Pixel watch is beautiful, looks less like a ‘computer’ than other smartwatches, and I’m sure you’d be proud to show it off, but from a practical standpoint, you might want to wait until the next generation of these watches.

Pixels Just Keep Getting Better
on October 21, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
I’m writing this review from the standpoint of a long time Pixel owner upgrading to the newest model.
I upgraded from the 6 Pro to this 7 Pro. You won’t find a huge difference between the two. That means the good news is that there’s practically no learning curve in the upgrade. Switching to the 7 Pro was effortless. I’m a T-Mobile customer, so I just swapped my old phone’s SIM card to the new phone. It’s easy (directions are all over YouTube) and it took about 30 seconds. I turned on the phone and it was automatically connected to T-Mobile.
I was delighted to see how easy it was to transfer all my apps and settings to the new phone. It even swapped the ‘ring’ and my old ‘desktop for me; all my contacts and phone numbers too. Just connect the two phones with the included cable and follow the instructions on the display. It really is effortless. I was totally up and running with the new phone in less than an hour.
There are noticeable improvements in the camera this year. The “Pro” pixel still has three different lenses, but the wide-angle one is wider, from 16mm to 14, and the telephoto is more powerful from 102 mm to 120, from 4x to 5x. That ultra-wide angle lens now has a really nice macro feature. At last you can get close-up on a small object like a flower and NOT receive the frustrating “move back” message as the camera tries to focus. I loved it.
The Pixel’s AI features keep getting better too. The Night Sight mode is better than ever, sucking in more available light than before, and this year there’s an “unblur” feature, where the phone will try to remove accidental blurriness from a photo you’ve taken in the past. I had trouble trying this feature out, because the camera was so good, I didn’t HAVE any blurred photos.
The new Pixel 7 Pro brings back the ‘face unlock’ feature from much earlier models for those who missed it. I didn’t turn it on because I think the fingerprint unlock is more secure. Also, whereas the fingerprint unlock feature could be sluggish on my old ‘6 Pro,’ I find it much improved on this new model.
If your old phone did not have a ‘5G” capability, you’ll be blown away with the speed on your new Pixel.
The bottom line is this:
If you already have a Pixel 6 Pro, it’s up to you to decide whether its worth around 900 bucks to upgrade to the 7. Your current phone is still very serviceable and should keep you happy for another year. If you love Pixels and have an older model, it’s certainly worth it

Absolutely the Best Ice Cream Ever
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
If you love really rich smooth ice cream, you’ll be in heaven with the ‘Creami Deluxe,” and that’s just the start. It comes with a 74-page colorful recipe booklet with dozens of different dessert and drink recipes.
I unboxed it and opened the “Quick Start” guide. The little booklet gave all the instructions I needed to get going and it contained one ice cream recipe. I was headed out to the grocery store anyway, so I made sure I had all the ingredients required. I got home, followed the step by step recipe, (it was easy, and I am the opposite of a chef) poured the mixture in one of the two plastic pint containers and put it in the freezer.
The next day, I placed the container in the device, dialed up the ‘ice cream’ settings and just let it work. In two minutes, it stopped and the “ENJOY” light came on. The ice cream was as smooth as rich as I could imagine. I took out enough for my wife and me and snapping the plastic lid on the container, put the rest back in the freezer.
Clean-up is really easy. You can put everything in your dishwasher upper rack or of course wash by hand. The Creami unit itself didn’t need any cleaning at all, except maybe a damp cloth around the spindle under the control panel.
Looking around online I found literally HUNDREDS of recipes for the Creami, there are lots of folks who love the unit and have come up with many ideas for it. Just Google “Ninja Creami Recipes” and you’ll see for yourself. many of them are also dairy-free if that’s what you’re looking for.
The only thing frustrating about the device is usually you need to wait 24 hours for your ice cream or drink to freeze before you can enjoy it, although there are recipes like for milk shakes that you can enjoy immediately after mixing.
Bottom line: The Creami is NOT a blender, you can’t put in ice cubes. You can’t make a smoothie by putting in hard ingredients, only soft fruit like oranges, pineapple or bananas. But following the recipes, it does make the best desserts and fun drinks you’ve ever tasted. I think you and your family will love it.

21st Century Heating Pad
on October 6, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
I’m in my 70’s, and when I was a kid and had muscle pain, my mom would bring out the ‘hot water bottle’ or electric heating pad.
The Venom Go, takes that idea and improves upon it in so many ways.
For one thing it requires no hot water or needs to be plugged in. It uses a USB rechargeable battery. For another, mom’s heating pad didn’t vibrate to really help alleviate painful muscles.
The Venom has three heat settings and three vibration settings. You can select continuous vibration, intermittent vibration or a more pulsating one. It assembles very easily. The pad attaches to the control pod with two magnets. You just peel the plastic away from the pad, the adhesive sticks easily to your body and then just turn it on. When you’re finished you stick the plastic back on the pad and put it away. Hyperice says each pad is good for 20 uses. The “GO” comes with three pads and of course you can purchase more. Hyperice sells them in packs of three, for a total of 60 uses, for about $30.
Of all the Venom products, this “GO” has the smallest surface area. For me this is perfect. I normally have pain around my neck, and the pad’s surface, 5” x 3,” is perfect for me. It’s also great for other small spots around the body, such as your calf muscle.
One of my favorite features about the “GO” is the Hyperice App available free for a smartphone. It connects via Bluetooth instantly and then controls all the features (treatment time, heating level and vibration settings) that you need. As I said, I mostly use the GO on my neck and it would be really difficult to try to reach up there and mess with the controls while it’s attached to me. The app makes it effortless to operate all the features of the unit without looking like a contortionist.
I’m really happy with the Venom Go. It’s easy to use and gives me pain relief.

My New Favorite Vacuum
on September 23, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
This is the best all around vacuum cleaner I’ve ever used, for many reasons that I’ll explain here.
I already have one cleaner at home which is really good for hardwood floors, another which works best on carpets. A third can do both, but when you switch from hardwood to carpet, you need to make adjustments to its settings. This Samsung does both without adjusting anything, In fact, there’s nothing to adjust. You only have two controls, one to turn on the machine and another to change speed. There’s also no ‘trigger’ to hold down. It felt weird at first, it not being there, but soon I realized that without having to hold down a trigger, it’s far less tiring on your hand. It has a long pipe, so its really good at cleaning under furniture that other cleaners would need a special attachment for.
The Pet 60 is really light, quiet and very maneuverable too. It weighs just 5 pounds. Because of this I was afraid it wouldn’t vacuum as effectively as my other cleaners but I was wrong, comparisons with my heavier cleaners showed the Samsung did quite well.
Emptying the dirt cup is not quite as simple as a Dyson, but it’s easier than most others. You just click and pull off the clear plastic cup, unscrew the filter and empty the dirt in the trash. You can then clean the cup under the sink if you like. Dry and reassemble and snap back on the cleaner. The filter is washable too, but you need to let it totally dry around 24 hours before putting it back on. I was happy that the dust cup is bigger most other cleaners, so you need to empty it less often.
It comes with just three accessories. A small, motorized head perfect for stairs, an extension crevice tool, and combination tool with a brush head which I use for getting small crumbs out of the keyboard I’m typing this on. 😊
Two things on the negative side, since no product is perfect. Samsung says the battery lasts up to 40 minutes, but that’s on low power and not using a power head. In the real world, running the vacuum continually on high speed with the motorized head, I received less than 7 minutes of power. The good news is that the medium speed, which is the default speed whenever you turn it on, is adequate for almost all jobs, and it’ll run 20 to 30 minutes before stopping. Because of this, this vacuum cleaner would probably be best for intermittent cleaning, like vacuuming a room or two at a time, as opposed to trying to clean a whole house. When the battery dies and the unit stops, it takes about 2 ½ hours to fully charge it back up.
Also, an LED to light up the floor as you clean would really have been a nice addition.
But bottom line, the Pet 60 is light, powerful, and really easy to handle. It costs much less than a similar Dyson, and for most people it would be everything you’d need.

The Key Word is PREMIUM
on September 7, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
I had heard often that Sennheiser headphones were famous for their superior bass reproduction. Trying on these new Momentum 4 headphones let me know immediately what everyone was talking about. It was fascinating listening to recordings I’ve heard a thousand times and yet hearing something totally new with these phones.
First, everything about these headphones says “premium.” When you first put them on you can feel how the softness caresses your head without any unnatural pressure. You can adjust them effortlessly to fit.
Downloading the Sennheiser app is a must. When first listening without the app, the headphones sounded ‘flat’ and I was a little worried. The app took care of the problem. You can simply adjust the equalizer yourself, or the app actually coaches you while you listen to a favorite tune, it gives you a few different choices with different frequencies in your song, and then gives you a final suggestion for your ultimate sound. It’s kind of like when you get fitted for eyeglasses and the optometrist gives you “A” or “B” choices repeatedly until your prescription is just right.
Another ‘plus’ of the Momentum 4 is the incredible battery life. Sennheiser says it’s 60 hours at normal volume and noise cancellation. That’s twice as long as any other headphones I’ve seen. The headphones also feature a two year warranty.
Since these ARE noise cancelling headphones, that’s an important feature to discuss. The cancellation is very good, maybe not quite as powerful as the premium Sony phones, but pretty close. You’d have to really do an “A” “B” test back and forth between them to really notice the difference.
The headphones shined when using them for phone calls. The callers sounded crystal clear to me, and the people I called while using them could not tell whether I was talking into my phone directly, or just using the headphones on the call. I don’t know what more you can ask for.
You do need to go through a ‘learning curve’ to learn to control the headphone’s features. There is only one physical switch, which turns the phone on and off and is used for pairing (although my headphones paired automatically with no assist from me,)
Everything else is done by using the touchpad on the right earpiece, starting and stopping your music, skipping ahead or back, answering the phone and more is done with various finger movements along the pad.
The case also says, “premium.” It has a heavy-duty zipper, and the headphones drop right in. It has elastic bands to hold the USB cord, an audio cable if you’re not going to be using Bluetooth, and even an old-fashioned ‘airplane adapter’ if they even use those anymore.
Bottom line, if you are really looking for state of the art over-the-ear headphones, and from one of the most famous names in audio equipment for over 75 years, you will not go wrong with the Momentum 4’s.

You'll Drift Away
on August 23, 2022
Posted by: AlanD963
In a world where you’re constantly looking at your phone, stressing out over everything that’s happening today, it’s wonderful to be able to take a ‘mental vacation’ whenever you need it and just get away from social media for an hour or so. The Homedics Drift Sand Table allows you to do just that.
You just open up the Drift app on your Android or Iphone, select one of the hundreds of patterns you’ll find there, download it to the table through Bluetooth and watch it work. The magic marble starts moving through the sand and creates the intricate pattern you selected, like a true artist You get lost and smile, almost mesmerized, following the marble’s path as it creates the picture.
You also control the light ring, selecting one of the infinite colors available, or have your choice of colors change slowly as your design is created, maybe have the colors ‘breathe’ as you watch. It’s entirely up to you. There is also a ‘scheduling’ feature in the app, so you can set up your Drift to come on at a certain time and create patterns for different times for different days of the week. This might be helpful in a waiting room for example. There are many ways to customize the device.
Here are a few hints if you purchase the Drift and are unboxing it. There are many different envelopes containing the sand and power adaptors. There’s the well packed large heavy round glass top, and be very careful to locate and save the silver marble in all the packing. It would be easy to miss it and the Drift would be worthless without it. After I had everything unboxed, I could not find the instructions. I spent several minutes looking for it unsuccessfully. After installing the Drift app on my phone, I saw that complete directions were in the app. Ironically when I started throwing out the packaging, I discovered there WAS a page of instructions on a piece of heavy paper glued to a piece of cardboard. It turned out I didn’t need it anyway. Also, it would be helpful for Homedics to include a little more instruction as to how the app works. After experimenting I finally figured out all the features, but a little help from them would have been appreciated.
The only other negative I have on the device is that to get the full enjoyment you need to be looking down into it. The design makes it difficult to be looking at the sand drawings from the side.
That being said, this is a totally original device, there’s nothing that comes close to it. It works as if by magic and I think really will take your mind off social media, at least for a little while. It did for me.

what is expected battery life

If you mean how long will the battery operate before needing a recharge, it's supposed to be about a month
If you mean how long will the battery actually last over time, Google is not saying.

Will the new 'nest' camera show up in the Nest app, or will I have to use two apps (Google home) if I have old Nest cameras?

This camera will ONLY work with the Google "Home" app and will NOT appear on your Nest app.
Google says that you can see all of your cameras on that "Home" app, which is true, but since this app is not available for a PC, you can NOT see this new camera on a computer.

Do the video feeds show up on home.nest.com for the new cameras?

No, for some reason this camera does NOT work with either the Nest app or home.nest.com. You can NOT see the output of the camera on your computer.

Previous reviewers are saying it's not compatible with the Nest App that my current doorbell and outdoor wired camera is on. Is this true? Can I integrate this camera with my Nest App and other cameras?

Unfortunately this camera is NOT compatible with the google Nest app which to me is a huge disappointment.
You have to use the Google "Home" app which does not work with a PC. So you can't even see the camera's output on a PC, which you obviously can with their other cameras.

How long does it take to charge one of these cameras? I would use it primarily overnight so during the day we would charge it whenever the battery is running low. Speaking of low battery, will the app display battery life remaining?

They claim that under normal use the battery should last about a month. Charging from zero to full should take about 5 hours.
And YES, the battery 'meter' is very large and clearly seen in the Google Home App.

No it does NOT!

And I hate that. You can only see this camera on their "Home" app,
This means you can't see the camera on a PC, only on a phone, or tablet, or Google Home device.

I already have a Nest aware subscription. Will these cameras be able to be added to my account?

Yes! The good news about the "Aware" subscription is that it will work with ALL your cameras.
Each time you add a camera, it makes the cost of your subscription per camera go down.
