Good equality cable
on October 11, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Seems that you always need an extra cable for your device. Currently, I'm using this for my iPhone 14 Pro Max and Gen 7 iPod Touch/Nano. Good to have an extra cable and, seemingly, a super long one at that. It's like the cable you have is always broken or too short. This seems to solve both issues. The braided cable should ensure longer life out of this cable so here's hoping that it does.
While the iPhone is switching over to USB-C already, I guess this cable will be obsolete for me. Until that time though, seems like this cable should do the trick. The silver/aluminum accents on the cables is a nice touch and, again, the length of this cable is perfect; for me at least.
Data speed seems consistent with the OEM Lightning cable so there doesn't seem to be any degradation of speed with this cable. Charging seems to be spot on as well with no dips in power draw or spikes from what I've seen. \
All in all, can never have too many of these cables even if Apple is doing away with Lightning.

Beefy, powerful blender.
on September 28, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Didn't think I needed a blender however I noticed I've been spending lots of money on Frappuccinos. Figured if I had a blender, I could make my own for significantly less. Turns out, this is true.
On top of these Frappuccino, I can make other mixed drinks I've always wanted to but couldn't since I didn't have a blender. The blender itself is pretty beefy. It's a tad on the heavy side (for a blender) but it feels solid. The canister also feels quite sturdily made as well. I did notice that the cover and the canister were a bit difficult to put on. The fit of the cover onto the canister and the canister to the base is REALLY tight. I'm hoping this should ease up after some use but it's something to note.
I like this blender since the controls are very simple. I've seen other blenders that have all these buttons, slide switches and what not and I don't like that. I just wanted something that you plug in and hit a button and the blender goes. This is what this does so I like that.
Mixing up my drinks now is pretty nice. Cleaning this, by hand, is quite a pain so I'd recommend cleaning in your dishwasher.

My favorite controller for PC
on September 26, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I'm somewhat of a recent PC convert. Played Playstation for about 8-9 years before switching to PC. Can't really use M/K unfortunately so I stuck with controller. Problem is, almost all PC controllers are in the XBOX format where the thumbsticks are positioned low right and high left. Found it very difficult to adapt to this since the Playstation controllers have the thumbsticks in the lower position.
That's where this controller came into play. Initially I found it too expensive but, after using for a bit, I can't play without it now. For all the FPS games I play, I'm far more comfortable using this controller while still being somewhat competitive.
Now, this particular controller has the racing wheel module which is nice. Tried using it in GTA V however it didn't work out too well :D However, for Forza, I found it to be quite decent. In all honesty, for any racing game/simulator, we'd all love to have a full pedal/steering wheel controller to use as those are just great. BUT, seeing as those can cost quite a bit, a good consolation prize would be a controller like this. It does take some time getting used to the steering knob on this but it's doable.
Only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that, from previous experience with this controller, stick drift is a major concern. I've purchased about 4 replacement kits already so I'm assuming this wheel module will have it's issues later on down the road. While this wouldn't be a good choice for competitive racing, it does work well enough for most casual racing gamers

Decent option for external webcam
on September 25, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Working remotely, having a webcam is a must. However, my desktop doesn't have one so I needed to get an external one in order to continue being employed.
I had a couple cheap ones I found online but either the picture quality was so-so or there were issues with the mics on these cameras. I don't need/want a super duper, over-the-top camera but just something that works and provides good features.
This one seemed a nice fit. Since I use a desktop, with dual monitors, I don't have a good place to mount camera however, after a little redesign in monitor layout, I was able to mount this quite nicely. As far as performance, I like it. I don't really see the need for 4k resolution or hyper sensitive omni directional microphone. This one is pretty simple but in a good way.
The picture quality is good. The color contrast could use some fine tuning but the picture/video is clear and not a whole lot of issues with shadowing or lighting issues. Camera mount is acceptable. It doesn't lock into place anywhere but has rubber on it so that it'll stay put pretty easily. Only downside I can see is there is no privacy cover, either manual or automatic. I know this is a thing for some people so just a heads up that this doesn't have any such thing.

Discrete home monitoring system
on September 22, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I found this security system to be somewhat interesting. While this system is missing a camera(s), the sensors provide a much smaller footprint both from an installation and visual standpoint.
I've had separate sensors for motion, water leakage and temperature before however they're pretty specific in use case AND they came from different brands. Each of those brands usually had other available sensors but those would cost additional money which would bloat the overall cost of the system. This system has sensor that detect 8 different points which is kinda interesting in that you don't need separate sensors for everything now. Each sensor can detect motion, moisture, temperatures as well as a few other data points.
Having this flexibility is pretty nice actually since, wherever you put these, all bases are covered essentially. Installation of these sensors is double sided tape so you don't necessarily need to drill them into place which is nice if you're a renter. With the keypad, you can arm/disarm the system manually or use the companion app to do that.
Obviously if you get more sensors then that'll increase the cost of this system but, for me, 2 is good enough and I'd imagine it'd be the same for the vast majority of users. I live in a condo so I have one sensor on the door and one of the bedroom window. Probably will get 1 or 2 more but I think, for now, 2 is good.

Good, middle tier gaming monitor
on September 19, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Got this to use with my gaming laptop. Really liked the size to this since my gaming laptop is only a 17" screen on it. With this, almost, double the size of my laptop screen, makes for much easier and better gaming experience.
32" monitor is right in that sweet spot, for me at least. It's not too big and not too small. Still gives plenty of real estate to work with without being a strain on the eyes. I have a larger 49" screen (which is great) however there can be times where it's a strain to use since the super ultrawide format of the screen makes it a bit harder to focus in on what you need to focus on.
This is a flat screen so I know lots of folks swear by the curved screens these days. But I find this flat screen just as easy to use without sacrificing any performance or specs. This has decent specs so it's not the greatest performing monitor but neither it is an entry level monitor. 2560 x 1440 screen with 1ms response time. Hadn't had any issues with stutter or lag or ghosting when playing Destiny 2/RDR2. Has all the ports you need such as 2 HDMI and DisplayPort as well as 3.5mm jacks.
Overall, a great primary monitor for gaming or, if you have a larger monitor, then this will also make for a great secondary screen too. Only real complaint I had was with the stand. This monitor doesn't go up/down or side to side so it's quite limited in that respect. I would recommend you use a monitor arm like I did so you have a little more flexibility when using this monitor.

Great security setup for the home
on August 13, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
Over the past several years, I've been adding to my home automation/home security setup quite a bit. I live in a condo but am still concerned about security just with what's been going on recently with package theft and stuff as well as home invasions. As such, I have quite a few different cameras from different brands spread out within my place. This security system accomplishes two things that I find are big issues with my current setup.
1. I no longer need to have multiple cameras from different brands in my place. This also means I don't need multiple apps on my phone either which can get real annoying when it comes to viewing live cameras or enabling/disabling them. In total, I have 5 different cameras from 4 different brands. I have Eufy, Nest, Wyze and Ring. Each of these have different apps on my phone BUT can be controlled simultaneously through Apple HomeKit or Google Home apps. Also, from a financial perspective, I no longer need separate subscriptions from these apps to utilize them.
2. My recordings are no longer in the cloud and sit right in my hard drive of my security system. There are pros/cons to having your data in the cloud however, I'm starting to feel a little uneasy with this recently; especially when it comes to the layout and contents of my place. Recordings can still be accessed through the cloud with this system however, I find it a little more secure if it's also in a physical location.
Probably the biggest issue with this system is A) unpacking it and B) installing these cameras. The packaging on this system is a tad over the top I think. Everything is boxed/wrapped separately which takes some time to unpack everything. And since these cameras mount to your wall, you'll need to drill holes for these locations which can be quite tedious. But, once done, these cameras connect pretty fast to the base unit and are ready to go. You can customize names of cameras as well as view all of the in the companion app. The recordings themselves are great quality in day or night conditions. I still need to setup 3 more cameras but I'm liking how everything is looking so far.
So, I get a cohesive security system with 6 cams that I can view whenever I want. I'm able to cancel a couple unneeded subscriptions and the quality of the recordings is great. Kind of wish I did this earlier. If you're in the market for a first home security system then this might be a good choice to look into

Good sounding, budget earbuds
on August 13, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I've used quite a few earbuds in my time so it's always nice to test out new ones from time to time. I'm a big fan on Anker's line of chargers so was kind of nice to see some newer earbuds from them.
Big rage these days is with noise canceling earbuds/headphones. Once you've tried them, there's really no going back to regular sounding earbuds IMO. These are both simplistic in design but quite advanced in their technology.
For scope, I usually use either my Airpods Pro 2, Beats Fit Pro or Sony WF-1000XM3 for my dailies. The Airpods and Beats both work great for music/calls but when I just want to listen to music, I go with the Sonys.
These Soundcord earbuds are right in the middle of the ones I already have. The noise cancelling isn't quite as nice as the Airpods Pro and the music sound isn't quite as nice as the Beats/Sonys I have. Anker usually sits in the middle between low end and upper mid/high end devices. These are no different.
Sound wise, they provide great sound. Nice highs/mids and just a little bit of bass. When I used these for a conference call, I got intermittent buzzing/popping sounds throughout the call. I don't experience this with any of the other earbuds I have so not sure if this is just a one off issue or if it's firmware related.
That said, overall, these are decent, mid-grade earbuds IMO. They're not the best, not the worst but, for 90% of people out there, these will work just great for whatever their needs.

Cool creators tool but need to know how to use it
on July 24, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
I've been looking into a gimble for my phones to try out some video content creation. I've seen a bunch of these but never really got around to looking into them until now. Like most people, I'll hold my phone in hand for recording videos or what not. It works but, when recording videos, the choppy/bouncy shaking of the phone doesn't really equate to solid videos. I got the opportunity to review one of these units and I'm quite intrigued by it. Definitely a great tool to have and, possibly, a must-have for anyone creating video content.
The first thing to note is that it should hold any smartphone. However, larger phones like my iPhone 14 Pro Max, with an Otterbox case, will not fit in the holder at all. I have smaller iPhones like my 6 and 4S that will fit just fine however you should know that not all phones will fit (depending on if you're using a case or not).
Controls on this are sorta tricky TBH. For most things, it's pretty simple to figure out what button does what but this seems to be a more advanced; especially if you're not used to using things like this. If you're new to these things then you'll definitely want to watch a video or read a FAQ on these things first.
After "training" then this becomes a great little tool to use for shooting video. Over time, I think it'll become a must-have for me but, for now, still in training mode but definitely finding great use for this.

Great components at competitive price
on July 24, 2023
Posted by: LouRevue
From a purely spec/components perspective, this is a great little machine to have;
- 16" WUXGA 165Hz IPS screen
- Intel i5-13500HX
- GeForce RTX 4050
- 16GB DDR5
- 512GB SSD
These specs will provide great gaming experience for whatever game you got. I've been playing Destiny 2 and RDR2 on here and it's been flawless. Screen provides nice, crisp colors and the processor/GPU keep up with even max settings on these two games.
With this laptop, you get all the I/O ports you'll need to connect your devices. You get HDMI and thunderbolt connections in the back, Ethernet, USB 3.0 and MicroSD and headphone port on the left side and two more USB-C ports and cable lock on the right side.
The biggest draw for this laptop is going to be the price. It's comfortably priced where you can get good components while not breaking the bank on a $2500-$3000 laptop. RAM is upgradeable as is the HD however I haven't looked into doing that just yet.
For a ~$1000 laptop, I don't think you can really beat this considering the components and performance of this laptop.

Excellent laptop for everyday use
By LouRevue from Washington, DC
Having had the chance to use this laptop, I must say it’s quite an impressive model for almostn any use. With an abundance of features housed in a sleek, stylish body, it’s a solid laptop for anyone in the market for a new/replacement laptop.
Using a 7th gen i5 dual core processor, the laptop functions on par with just about any laptop in its price range. With 8GB of RAM (12GB max) and a 1TB hard drive, it offers plenty of speed and room for all your files and enough power/speed to perform almost any task.
As far as the aesthetics go, this is an impressive looking laptop with clean lines, brushed aluminum cover and beveled edges. It’s a very nice looking laptop no doubt and the design, overall, is quite appealing. It comes with a full size keyboard as well as backlit keys which is a nice touch. Only gripe with the keyboard are the arrow buttons as the Up/Down buttons are smaller due to keyboard layout. The power button is on the right side of the laptop which is a bit unique as well as a dedicated volume button. There are 2 USB 3.0 ports as well as 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI, SD Card and USB-C port. There is no CD drive for anyone wondering. The laptop (closed) is only about ¾ inch tall however it’s a bit wider than most due to the full size keyboard.
Power/performance. Using a dual-core processor I was under the impression this would be relatively slow and have choppy performance when opening multiple programs. Being this is the latest gen processor from Intel, this is not the case. Opening 2-3 programs at once was done with relative ease and switching between them was pretty flawless. The 8GB RAM comes in quite handy here and even with a 5400 RPM HDD, this laptop was able to perform tasks with very good speed. Battery life is pretty good. Using it “normally” and leaving it on for about 5-6 hours, there was about 50% battery left. Also, one very noteworthy benefit to this laptop, it doesn’t get that hot when left on for long periods of time which is VERY nice.
The display is probably the most impressive feature on here. A full 1080p display is quite vibrant and displays bright and dark colors extremely well. Those wanting to watch Netflix/Hulu will have no issues with the display. In addition to visuals, the sound from this laptop is equally impressive. For watching movies or just playing music, the speakers on this laptop deliver quite nicely without too much reverberation or distorted sound.
One of my initial thoughts of this being a 2-in-1 was that the tablet was an afterthought/gimmick. Having used previous 2-in-1 laptops, I was expecting the tablet functionality to be quite lackluster. Again, this was not the case. In this unit, you have, both, a well built laptop as well as tablet on-the-go device. Once in tablet mode, the screen orients itself to that of a normal tablet using Windows Tiles. Touch sensitivity is surprisingly smooth and using paint programs worked well without any lag or drops in sensitivity. Using the tablet form works really well when you want to sit back and watch videos or movies. Very nice.
A couple concerns with this laptop were;
The hard drive. While it’s a large 1TB drive, I would’ve expected something, at least, in the 7200 RPM range. Being fast enough for normal business related tasks, anyone wanting to use this laptop for video editing or other processor intensive jobs might find it to be a bit slow. This can easily be remedied by replacing the HD for a faster spindle drive or a SSD. However it would’ve been nice to have a tad faster hard drive here.
The keyboard, for me, took a bit getting used to since I have previously used standard laptop keyboards without the number pad. This is a personal preference so nothing against the design. Just noting that those of you used to that type of laptop keyboard, there will be a bit of learning curve involved however I think the addition of the number pad is great thing and should be standard on all laptops.
While the brushed aluminum case is aesthetically appealing, I’m a little concerned about it getting scratched/dinged from normal use or if when you’re changing it to be used as a tablet. This is the case with some laptops that use this metal casing so just something to be aware of.
Overall, this is an impressive laptop, reasonably priced with enough up-to-date technology that will last you for several years to come. Being that it’s a 2-in-1, it’s an added bonus which allows you to use this device in ways you should be able to do and with relative ease. There is some bloatware included (this should be no surprise) so make sure to uninstall/delete the stuff you don’t need. Aside from a somewhat slow hard drive, the other features on this laptop more than make up for it. Very nice buy for a new work laptop or student.

Can an owner of the original non active 65t comment on the fit and stability difference with the active version? Curious if that and the extra IP rating is worth a look, or negligible.

I own both the active and regular 65T's and I don't see any noticeable difference between them. Aside from the IP rating, there's really not much difference. Both fit exactly the same and fit pretty snugly in the ear.

Brighten your day and night with this Philips Being Hue ceiling light. The dimming function lets you set an ambience for different moods, and it works with the Philips Hue dimmer switch and mobile app for versatile control. The ZigBee technology of this 32W Philips Being Hue ceiling lamp provides smooth, efficient interoperability with multiple Hue lighting units.

Can this light be controlled by a existing wired wall switch? I plan to replace the light that is already there with this one, but I would prefer to use the wired switch.

Yes you can...that's what I did. One thing to note is that the light won't come on immediately like your current light fixture does. There's a second or two delay after you flip the switch. I'm planning on replacing the switch with a dimmer switch so maybe that will correct the delay.
