Neat, rugged little hard drive...fast too
on May 27, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
There really aren't downsides I can see with this hard drive. If you need something with a bit more space than your typical USB drive but not as bulky as most other external drives, this is a nice little pickup that should suit just about anyone's needs.
While it's bigger than your typical USB drive, it's not bulky or cumbersome as you would think. Dimension wise, it's a bit larger than a business card and neatly fits into your hand. The weight is really negligible IMO so it'll fit easily into your backpack or purse without issue. This is a "rugged" model so it's dust/water resistant, I can't really think of a scenario where this would be beneficial for me however, if you're a field photographer or doing anything tech related out in the wild blue yonder, this might be a nice pickup if you need to offload files from memory cards or something. For me, I'm a desk jockey so this will work perfect for me for transporting files and what not from home to office.
It comes with two cables; One USB-C to USB-C and one USB-A to USB-C. For max speed, the USB-C to USB-C cable is ideal however it works fine with the USB-A cable since this is USB 3.2. 1TB, for me, is perfect for just about everything. From decks to large spreadsheets; there's no issue for me with running out of space on this drive .
The only small thing I can pick out from this is that the coating on this drive is kind of a rubbery, matte finish. It picks up lint quite well and in great quantities so this should be something of interest for you. I kind of wished it was a smoother texture however, this being somewhat of a rugged drive, I guess it makes more sense to have this finish instead.
I have oodles of USB drives lying around so I think it might be time to consolidate those into this one and have this as my main on-the-go drive.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Nice powerful and portable laptop
on May 13, 2022

For those in the market for a lightweight, portable laptop; might want to check this one out.
This Zenbook pretty much checks off all the boxes if you're in the market for a small, yet powerful, laptop for work or personal use.
As one would expect in a 14" laptop, this is very small, thin and lightweight. You can easily carry this around with one hand and easily stuff it in your backpack/tote bag without taking up too much space.
After botting this laptop up, the first that might jump out at you is the screen. The OLED screen is vibrant and the colors just seem to pop on this display. Viewing Netflix or movies on this just seem to look so much nicer than on your typical laptop display. Colors seem true and vibrant without them being too washed out or over saturated. Normally I have a black background as my wallpaper but this screen is so nice I had to find something more colorful to take advantage of it.
While normally not something high on my list, the speakers on this laptop are as equally good as the screen. I rarely use the laptop speakers as I usually have a headset or earphones connected to my laptops. However, the speakers on this are surprisingly good. The speakers are downward firing but they sound pretty good. Good range on the speakers and adds a nice little touch to this laptops features. If you have the laptop on the carpet or something then the sound does get a bit muffled but, overall, really nice speakers on this laptop.
As far as specs, they're quite good. Latest process from Intel, 8Gb of DDR5 RAM Wifi 6 and NVME drive. While you won't be playing any AAA games on this laptop, for the general, average consumer, this will fit the bill quite nicely I think.
While there are several use cases for this laptop, I think this would be ideal for a student or maybe as a personal laptop. Size is great, power usage is pretty solid, decent specs and good screen/speakers. i think this is a great pickup for just about anything (aside from a gamer).

Surprisingly decent quality
on May 13, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
from Washington, DC
I'm a bit of a headphone snob so I really wasn't expecting much from these earbuds, especially considering the price. However after some play time with these, I'm quite impressed with the quality of these and even more so at this price point.
My everyday earbuds are either my Beats Fit Pro or Sony MX3. Really love the sound quality out of those however, they also command s hefty price tag. Sure, you can get cheaper earbuds from Sony and pretty much any other brand however, they tend to lack big time in the sound quality department.
These JVC earbuds fit that nice sweet spot for your average consumer that wants good quality earbuds without paying $100+ for them.
This is a no frills kind of earbud so all you get in the package is the charging case, earbuds and USB-C charger. There aren't any carrying cases or extra ear tips like you'd expect with other brands. The case itself is quite small so it'll easily fit in your pocket. Enclosed are the equally small earbuds. Pairing is quite simple on my iPhone. Took all of 2 minutes and I was listening to music.
The fit of these earbuds is so-so. With my other earbuds, I get annoyed that come with different size ear tips as they just pile up in one of my desk drawers. These earbuds, I almost wish they DID have extra sized tips included. While these fit pretty well in my ears, they're not quite as snug as I'd like them to be. Any violent/sudden movement and these will pop out for sure however, for the most part, they stay in pretty well. They tend to move around in my ear a bit so I found myself adjusting them frequently to get a good seal.
Sound quality is surprisingly good. I listen to a lot of EDM music so I like hearing those deep, thumping bass notes. The JVC buds don't quite have that great a range as the Sonys do however, you get a little thump whenever there are bass heavy notes/sounds being played. I'd say the range on these earbuds is pretty standard; not terrible but not that great. For the casual consumer, I think these will work just fine for those needs.
Phone quality was equally good. I did hear some echoing but it tended to be sporadic so not sure if was my BT connection or something else. In any event, for phone calls, these work just fine.
Overall, I'd say these are a good buy as they're quite inexpensive, wireless and decent sound quality. For the average person, I think these will work just fine for those subway rides to work or while at the gym.

Clean, crisp monitor for gaming
on May 11, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue

This is really a great overall monitor for productivity and gaming. You get the basics for a good gaming monitor as well as some decent features to step up your gaming rig.
Aesthetically, the monitor just looks really nice. I liked the Samsung Odyssey looks as they're pretty clean looking but have a space age look to them; especially the G9 monitors. You get standard ports for this monitor. You get a DisplayPort and HDMI port as well as a USB port for "Service" as they put it and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
I used this monitor on both my desktop and laptop rigs. My desktop has an i9-10850K/RTX 3090 and I have an Alienware x17 laptop. This monitor worked great for both. No lag and colors were nice, vibrant and crisp as one would expect from this monitor. Samsung always seems to produce really nice gaming monitors and this one is no exception.
All in all, a great monitor to use for your gaming setup. Only real downside I could point out on this was the price. Compared to other monitors with similar specs, this one is a tad on the higher side of things.

Good entry level gaming headset

If you're in the market for a simple, inexpensive gaming headset, then this is one you'll want to check out. For my desktop PC, I use the A40s which are great. However, for my gaming laptop, doesn't really make sense to use the bulkier A40s so these fit in nicely and are much more portable.
Sound wise, these are on par with what you'd expect from any Astro headset. Sound is nice a crisp with a good range of lows/highs that make for a pleasurable gaming experience. The thick earpads make those long gaming sessions easier. Unlike pleather earpads, these cloth ones do get sticky after hours of gaming which is great. They're comfortable for me even after 4-5 hour gaming sessions. They're lightweight so they're easy to tote around and seem to be a bit more "rugged" compared to other headsets. These can bend/flex a bit so there's no worry about breaking them or dropping them and having the explode.
The only real con I can think of is a personal one and that's with the fit of these headphones. I have a large noggin so it can be an issue finding a decent fitting headset. The A40s are perfect for my melon however these are a tad on the small size. Even after extending the arms all the way, it's still a tight fit for me to wear these. So, if you have big head, these probably aren't going to work for you. For everyone else though, these should fit just perfectly,

Fresh faced and relaxed
on May 2, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
from Washington, DC
An interesting device no doubt but works pretty well. I never been that much into facial care however, this little device has got some benefits that make me rethink taking care of my skin. I have a Therabody massager which works really nice and I came across this thing and decided to try it out. Therabody makes pretty good quality devices and this one is no exception.
I never thought a face massager would be that beneficial to be honest. I figured washing your face every night would be good enough however I started to get a little tightness in my face. probably due to age but I never thought there would be anything that could help out a tired face.
The massager is quite small and is also very ergonomic. It has a rechargeable battery built in and the different heads are held in place by magnets. You get 3 main heads, 1 UV light, 1, electric stimulation and 1 scrubbing head. There are also three center heads which are used when you have the light head mounted; 1 is pointed, 1 is scrubby and the other is flatter. mix and matching these allows you to get the type of massage you need without being too overcomplicated. Pretty simple to choose which one you want so it takes out a lot of the headache of figuring out which one to use and for what purpose. Also included is the USB-C charging cable, carrying case and conductive gel.
I find myself lying on the couch and just massaging my face with this thing. It feels good and it does help eliminate the facial tightness I've been experiencing lately. I get a little tingly feeling after I've used this massager on my face and, again, it just feels good. My brow and jaw muscles feel a bit more relaxed after using this for about 10-15 minutes.
While this may not be for everyone, I think it's worth a shot if your face just feels kind of old like mine does. It relaxes tight muscles in your face and just feels good. Thinking I may have to gift a couple of these and see how they work for other folks.

Great oral care steup
on April 18, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
from Washington, DC
Like most people, I have an electric toothbrush however, I had also been wanting to use a water flosser as I'm still using the string floss. I had bought a separate water pik before however it was pretty cheap and didn't really work well. Fast forward a couple years and my toothbrush need replacing. I saw this all-in-one unit and figured I'd give it a shot.
The toothbrush is pretty great in itself. I had a Philips electric toothbrush before and this was great to have again. Really great quality and worked great. I used to have an Oral-B however the Philips is really a much better option IMO.
The water flosser is taking a little bit getting used to however, I can it's way more effective than your typical string flossing. The water flosser has a couple different nozzles to play around with to see which one suits you best. The water pressure is quite good so it's no issue blasting away food particles or what not with this. I do see that I'll probably be filling up the water tank about once every couple days but that's not too big an issue.
This nice little combo was pretty much what I was looking for as far as "total" oral care/hygiene for me. Using both of these devices, I feel a bit more confident that I'm getting a really thorough cleaning which is nice. Hopefully, this will mean less dentist visits but only time will tell. If you're looking for a complete tooth cleaning system, this is definitely worth a look.

Good printer, HP+ not so much
on January 31, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue

Great little laser jet printer. Footprint on this is considerably smaller compared to just about any other laser jet out there. Print quality is good and fast printing (21ppm). Great that it’s a multifunction printer and can be used with HP’s smartphone app. I really don’t like the HP+ service as it really depends on how much you print. Seems almost needless to pay a monthly fee to print and if you go over that amount you get charged extra. They moved to a pricing model similar to how SMS texts were back in the day. Good printer but I’d skip the HP+ service.

Comfy mouse for larger hands
on January 19, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
from Washington, DC
I had a older M310 mouse that was showing its age. I have sorta larger hands so this large mouse seemed like a good choice. I've used numerous Logitech mice so they're great quality.
This mouse is large in that it's about 1CM longer than your "normal" mouse. I wear L size glove usually so this mouse feels really good in the hand. The sides of the mouse are grippy and not smooth like most other mice. Again, feels real good in the hand.
One thing I particularly like about this mouse is the ability to store the USB dongle inside the mouse. Not sure why this isn't standard for all mice but its just really nice you can do this and not have to worry about losing the dongle. I use this mouse in my work laptop primarily so I won't be moving this mouse from computer to computer.
The buttons on this mouse are silent. Not a huge thing for some people but it's really nice not having to hear the click of the buttons when you're using the mouse. The side buttons are smooth and silent as well.
Mouse is plug and play so no need download any software or anything however I believe there is the normal Logitech software you can download.
Overall, the small size difference in this mouse really makes a nice difference. The mouse just feels better and the silent buttons on this make using this mouse easier.

Cool gaming mouse
on January 17, 2022
Posted by: LouRevue
from Washington, DC
Really intrigued by this mouse and am pleasantly surprised with its functionality. I had an older Logitech mouse that needed replacing and I saw this mouse and figured I'd give it a shot.
The shape of the mouse is taking a little getting used to. My previous gaming mouse was your typical, mouse shape. It fit the hand quite nicely so using it right out of the box was easy. This one is a bit oddly shaped however it still feels good in the hand. This mouse includes weights you can screw into the bottom however, I don't feel they provide any enhancement. With the weights out, there's not a whole lot of difference in feel with the mouse. They look ok in the mouse but, to me, doesn't really feel like they do anything
The RGB on this is undoubtedly cool. My previous mouse had one small section on it that glowed but this one has three different sections that light up. Everything is controlled by the iCUE software so you can easily change the color just like any other RGB device. you can also map the different buttons on the mouse to whatever you like as well through the software.
For those wondering, the "sniper" button near the thumb buttons is designed, out of the box, the aid in accurate shooting for all the FPS players. Basically, once you ADS, you click on the sniper button and it slows down the movement speed of you mouse enabling you to get more accurate shots. Definitely will take some time getting used to but it does work pretty well. This button can also be mapped to whatever function you need it to be as well.
Overall, really like the mouse both in its performance and looks. The weights, while not a huge thing, are more for aesthetics than anything else as far as I'm concerned.

Excellent laptop for everyday use
By LouRevue from Washington, DC
Having had the chance to use this laptop, I must say it’s quite an impressive model for almostn any use. With an abundance of features housed in a sleek, stylish body, it’s a solid laptop for anyone in the market for a new/replacement laptop.
Using a 7th gen i5 dual core processor, the laptop functions on par with just about any laptop in its price range. With 8GB of RAM (12GB max) and a 1TB hard drive, it offers plenty of speed and room for all your files and enough power/speed to perform almost any task.
As far as the aesthetics go, this is an impressive looking laptop with clean lines, brushed aluminum cover and beveled edges. It’s a very nice looking laptop no doubt and the design, overall, is quite appealing. It comes with a full size keyboard as well as backlit keys which is a nice touch. Only gripe with the keyboard are the arrow buttons as the Up/Down buttons are smaller due to keyboard layout. The power button is on the right side of the laptop which is a bit unique as well as a dedicated volume button. There are 2 USB 3.0 ports as well as 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI, SD Card and USB-C port. There is no CD drive for anyone wondering. The laptop (closed) is only about ¾ inch tall however it’s a bit wider than most due to the full size keyboard.
Power/performance. Using a dual-core processor I was under the impression this would be relatively slow and have choppy performance when opening multiple programs. Being this is the latest gen processor from Intel, this is not the case. Opening 2-3 programs at once was done with relative ease and switching between them was pretty flawless. The 8GB RAM comes in quite handy here and even with a 5400 RPM HDD, this laptop was able to perform tasks with very good speed. Battery life is pretty good. Using it “normally” and leaving it on for about 5-6 hours, there was about 50% battery left. Also, one very noteworthy benefit to this laptop, it doesn’t get that hot when left on for long periods of time which is VERY nice.
The display is probably the most impressive feature on here. A full 1080p display is quite vibrant and displays bright and dark colors extremely well. Those wanting to watch Netflix/Hulu will have no issues with the display. In addition to visuals, the sound from this laptop is equally impressive. For watching movies or just playing music, the speakers on this laptop deliver quite nicely without too much reverberation or distorted sound.
One of my initial thoughts of this being a 2-in-1 was that the tablet was an afterthought/gimmick. Having used previous 2-in-1 laptops, I was expecting the tablet functionality to be quite lackluster. Again, this was not the case. In this unit, you have, both, a well built laptop as well as tablet on-the-go device. Once in tablet mode, the screen orients itself to that of a normal tablet using Windows Tiles. Touch sensitivity is surprisingly smooth and using paint programs worked well without any lag or drops in sensitivity. Using the tablet form works really well when you want to sit back and watch videos or movies. Very nice.
A couple concerns with this laptop were;
The hard drive. While it’s a large 1TB drive, I would’ve expected something, at least, in the 7200 RPM range. Being fast enough for normal business related tasks, anyone wanting to use this laptop for video editing or other processor intensive jobs might find it to be a bit slow. This can easily be remedied by replacing the HD for a faster spindle drive or a SSD. However it would’ve been nice to have a tad faster hard drive here.
The keyboard, for me, took a bit getting used to since I have previously used standard laptop keyboards without the number pad. This is a personal preference so nothing against the design. Just noting that those of you used to that type of laptop keyboard, there will be a bit of learning curve involved however I think the addition of the number pad is great thing and should be standard on all laptops.
While the brushed aluminum case is aesthetically appealing, I’m a little concerned about it getting scratched/dinged from normal use or if when you’re changing it to be used as a tablet. This is the case with some laptops that use this metal casing so just something to be aware of.
Overall, this is an impressive laptop, reasonably priced with enough up-to-date technology that will last you for several years to come. Being that it’s a 2-in-1, it’s an added bonus which allows you to use this device in ways you should be able to do and with relative ease. There is some bloatware included (this should be no surprise) so make sure to uninstall/delete the stuff you don’t need. Aside from a somewhat slow hard drive, the other features on this laptop more than make up for it. Very nice buy for a new work laptop or student.

Bloatware?

It took a bit of time to setup my laptop as well. Have you tried uninstalling the bloatware on this laptop? I did and I don't have any issues with boot speed or anything else on my laptop.

Can an owner of the original non active 65t comment on the fit and stability difference with the active version? Curious if that and the extra IP rating is worth a look, or negligible.

I own both the active and regular 65T's and I don't see any noticeable difference between them. Aside from the IP rating, there's really not much difference. Both fit exactly the same and fit pretty snugly in the ear.

Brighten your day and night with this Philips Being Hue ceiling light. The dimming function lets you set an ambience for different moods, and it works with the Philips Hue dimmer switch and mobile app for versatile control. The ZigBee technology of this 32W Philips Being Hue ceiling lamp provides smooth, efficient interoperability with multiple Hue lighting units.

Can this light be controlled by a existing wired wall switch? I plan to replace the light that is already there with this one, but I would prefer to use the wired switch.

Yes you can...that's what I did. One thing to note is that the light won't come on immediately like your current light fixture does. There's a second or two delay after you flip the switch. I'm planning on replacing the switch with a dimmer switch so maybe that will correct the delay.

What is the return policy if I dont like the phone?

Depends on the carrier. I know AT&T has a 14 day return policy. Ask your carrier rep to see how long their return period is.

can i use the samsung note 2 in africa right after buying.

Only if you have the international unlocked version (the N7100 model) All other models will be tied to a carrier. You can still use those phones in Africa however you'll get hammered with roaming charges.

Does Samsung upgrade its android smartphone OS as soon as a new one is released? (4.1 Jelly Bean to the soon to be released 5.0 Key Lime Pie).

No. Samsung has its own UI built in (TouchWiz) so whenever a new OS comes out, Samsung won't release the update until they've adjusted their TouchWiz to work with the new OS. Judging from previous releases, new updates are generally released 4-6 months after a new OS has been released.
