Great Little Robot Vac
on September 15, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
I had been curious about robot vacs for a while, but was on the fence on pulling the proverbial trigger. When I got the chance to get this little unit, I had to check it out. I gotta' tell, you I'm glad I did.
On arrival it was well packaged. Unpackig was standard fare. A couple slices with the handy Spyderco Paramilitary II knife and we are ready to unpack and assemble. At this point, my 17 year old son walked into the room and with the excitement of a tech-geek 17 year old, he took over. Within just a 3 or 4 short minutes, he had it all plugged in and ready to go.
We let it charge for about 3 hours and loaded to app. App set up was simple and straight-forward. We started to mess around with the little robot and I gotta tell you this little thing works great.
We have 1900 sq ft on our first floor with about 1000 sq ft being hardwood and tile. We also have 3 dogs... We have had it set for the last week to go off for an hour a day and set it up so it's limited to just the hardwood and tile. We are impressed with what a great job it does at keeping dog hair managed on the hard surfaces.
At the end of the hour, this little guy is smart enough to find its way home and dock onto the charger. I have to note, it has averaged docking with around 54% battery remaining. Impressive.
One important note, this is a robot so its collection bin is small, at least compared to a full size vac It does need emptied after each run, but that is a simple 30 second job. It also has a small filter that I would recommend being cleaned about once a week, but even that is less than a 2 minute job. Well worth the trade off for a fire-and-forget robot.
End of the day, cool little unit and its quite effective on hard surfaces. I can not comment on its efficacy on carpet but I would imagine it would certainly be suitable.
I have no problem recommending to a friend. Great little robot vac!

Great TV, Especially For The Price
on August 27, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
OK, let me just open with the blanket statement that this really is an excellent TV. I have had 3 experiences recently with Hisense TV's and they went from very bad (55" H9+) to pretty dang solid (55" H8F) then to excellent with this 65" H9F. The latter two did a great deal in saving my view of Hisense and their overall reputation.
Lets start with the initial experience... It came well packaged, with four solid cardboard corners heavily shrink-wrapped around the factory box. A couple cuts from my handy Benchmade knife and I was able to get to the consumer package the TV left the factory with. Another couple of quick cuts and the top of the box was ready to have the TV removed.
One thing that I really like about this TV and the H8F is they both had plastic bags with "handles" on the top. Simply grab the "handles" on the bag and the TV was easily pulled out. Important note, I would highly recommend having a second person to help unpack and do the initial setup. One person could do it, but for the sake of assuring the welfare of your new TV, two is better. On that note, please remember it IS a big TV... It's 65 pounds or so with all it's packaging and without packaging, its approximately 36" x 57" and with the base of the stand, it's about 11"deep.
Setting the legs a was literally a one minute job. Two stands, four screws and one Phillips head screwdriver. Easy money. The other inclusions were the ubiquitous multi-language manuals, power chord, remote and batteries. Plugged it in and now lets see what happens when we power it on.
SW set up was incredibly easy with Android TV. Power on, answer a few questions, agree to set-up with Google and, boom, within two minutes your WiFI is ready as well as the basics to most of your apps (Netflix, Plex, Vudu etcetera). That was great. Super simple, fast and utterly intuitive.
The remote includes a microphone that supports Google Assistant. It works as expected. I'm not going into the multitude of options and power of Google Assistant, but suffice it to say it works well.
OK, we are ready to to see this unit in action. First test was my wife's favorite show, "I'm Sorry" on Netflix app built into TV. The picture was fantastic, especially for a TV at this price. The sound was also impressive (for what it's worth) on a flat panel, That said, I believe most people installing a TV this size and video quality will bypass the stock TV speakers and instead use a soundbar/sub combo or a stand alone home theater sound system, so I won't dwell too much on sound, but it is pretty good.
Next I watched the Netflix series "Our Planet" from the Dish Network receiver in 4K UHD with HDR. The picture was absolutely stunning. It was easily on par with my other 65" 4K UHD TV that cost several hundred dollars more. Very impressive.
I'm not going to go into the specific specs because you can get them all over, but this does support HDR / HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. It also has a full and sightly above standard number of inputs / outputs for a decent upper mid-level TV. Impressive.
One item I will point out where this TV really shines is in it's field of view. With this TV, I can easily walk into the kitchen and from 30' + away and roughly 160 degrees in the daytime, the brightness and field of vision is excellent. Very impressive.
**PLEASE NOTE** This product was provided to me at no cost in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This review is exactly that: Honest and unbiased. The price played no role in the tone or honesty of this review.

Pretty Cool Little Unit
on August 14, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
That pretty much sums it up: Pretty cool little unit.
Buddy of mine has sworn by his air fryers for years. I never really understood why, but now I understand. This thing is simple, quick, healthy and energy efficient, especially as compared to a full size home oven.
First impressions: Pretty decent typical consumer grade. Certainly adequate for residential needs.
Simple operation. Three pieces. Quite self explanatory. Plug it in, insert basket, adjust temp +/-, adjust time +/- and Start/Stop button. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.
Quick note: There is no "On/Off" button. Plug it on, insert basket and it turns on automatically. Remove tray and it shuts off. Idiot-proof.
Tossed some frozen fried shrimp in at 350 for 7 minutes and I had nice, crisp, hot shrimp. Would have taken 15 minutes at 350 in a standard oven. Saved time, saved energy thus saving money. Win, win, win. Same with cod filet's. For a busy family, this is a great time-saver.
Clean up was simple. Basket and tray give a simple rinse and then into the dishwasher. The fryer itself, simple wipe with mild soap and sponge, dry with paper towel and you are golden.
In all honesty, I looked for a reason to give this unit 4 stars instead of 5, but just could not find any legit reason.
End of the day, I would certainly recommend to a friend.

Honestly, I can't comment on the "speed" of the mouse they advertise because it seems to move those 0's and 1's faster than my tiny little brain can comprehend. That said it's quite ergonomically appealing and comfortable.
It does everything I want when I'm gaming and for general use. i have no problem recommending to a friend.

Big but quite capable
on July 24, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
Full disclosure: I generally try to write a relatively detailed review as possible, but I am currently writing this review on said laptop while sitting in my RV in the depths of Yellowstone. That said, my technical capacities (I.E. internet coverage and speed) and motivations are certainly diffused.
The G5 is a large and relatively heavy laptop, but I'm not dissapointed given its capacities. I mean you don't buy an F-350 pickup to tow a 12,000 pound trailer through the mountains and then complain about its size. This laptop needs to be big to do the things it does, but certainly worth noting.
As for performance, it is fast. Blazingly so. With the partnership between the 256 GB SSD and the 1 TB hard drive, startup is the fastest I have ever seen. And with 16 GB RAM, it can access critical data instantly. Overall, impressive.
The screen is nice, nothing to complain about but probably not particularly noteworthy. Please don't take that as a negative, but yes, the screen is beyond capable but it i exactly what I would expect from machine like this.
I do enjoy the keyboard and its inclusion of the back-light and the numeric keypad but I will admit that having the keypads offset of the keyboard has taken some getting used to. That however is an ID10T error of the end-user and not a flaw in the PC.
In all, I think this is a great machine and certainly beyond able to deliver what most users and gamers would need.
Yes I would recommend it to a friend. OK, gonna pack up the kids and dogs and go see Yellowstone!

Good Printer, Jury Still Out On Longevity Of Ink
on July 2, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
In all, a decent printer so far. Prints clean, quiet, quick and accurate.
Unit feels well built and perfectly suited for a small / home office and / or household (like mine) with 2 high school, soon to be college kids. Set-up was easy, as expected.
To be perfectly frank, the reason I selected this was due to size / price / longevity of ink tanks. That said, it is far too early to comment on that but I have no reason to believe that it won't operate as advertised.
As noted in title, good printer but I hope (and have no reason to believe that it won't) last as advertised.
Based on everything I know now, I can easily recommend to a friend.

Decent Basic Security Camera
on June 25, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
This is a decent camera, decent hardware but the app is kind of mehhh...
Inside the box were the basics. Camera, power adapter, antane, card, basic instructions.
Quality felt good not great, but OK. Physical installation was simple. The hardest part was my "specific" personality and coring a small lead to run power from inside, but that is not at the fault of the camera. Getting it connected was not seamless but certainly not too difficult. It had some finckyness but that's not uncommon for wireless.
The camera picture quality is pretty decent. To be fair, I have the house and most of the property on a higher-end Samsung commercial grade system so what I am used to is not apples to apples. That said, this camera filled a nice hole on my workshop overlooking the RV. For me, it was not a need-to-have, but fills the role as a nice-to-have.
The app, as previously mentioned is not as good nor as bad as others,Again, a little fincky but not horrible

Great Bluetooh

I had a previous generation a few years back and loved it. Thanks to Un-tied Airlines, they were "kind" enough to destroy it for me with their fine baggage handling. When I saw this little guy pop up, I grabbed it straight away. I am not disappointed.
Sound quality is very good, operation is easy and it's quite comfortable. No complaints on sound or control.
I do wish it were a little smaller to make it easier to put in my ear while wearing a hat, but that's really my only complaint.
In all, I would recommend this to a friend. Not the smallest BT by any stretch, but feature rich, especially for the price.

Great Basic BUT GOOD Home Theater Setup
on June 11, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
Lets start with delivery... This set-up is BIG. The box is just under 65 pounds. I'm not surprised given that is includes a large sub-woofer and a full multi-channel receiver, in addition to a nice center speaker and 4 solid front R/L and rear R/L speaker set.
I hauled the box from garage to stairs and then got it downstairs with no problem. That said, if you have ANY doubt if you are hauling it a decent distance or up/down stairs, I might suggest to open the main box and separately move the Denon receiver box individually first, and then after moving it, remove the heavier Polk speaker box. Better safe than sorry and just my $00.02.
As mentioned, the first box out is the Denon AVR-S540BT. Included in that box was the receiver, remote (with battery), AM and FM antenna's tuning speaker and user manual. I'll get to the setup later.
Before removing the Polk box, important to note they include probably close to 100' of nice 16 gauge cable, a decent HDMI cable and a single lead for connecting Sub-woofer to the receiver. Nice inclusion, Polk/Denon.
Next up, I removed the Polk Blackstone box. Inside were the usual suspects: 4 surround speakers, 1 center speaker and a hefty sub-woofer. Initial feedback was pretty impressive. They had a nice quality feel and were relatively heavy. With speakers and sub-woofers, I generally find that to be a good thing, indicating solid build and heavy magnets for the speakers.
The next 2 hours was me replacing my 15+ year-old existing speaker wire. I did not want to taint my experience (positive or negative) by effecting performance with external variables. That said, I did have to buy an additional spool of wire for the last speaker, but I do have a LARGE basement so I was expecting that.
All speakers are wired and connected... Important note, they chose to use a locking nut design that I really appreciated. It offered a 100% positive feeling in knowing that your speaker wire was fully connected. I don't really have anything against standard spring loaded wire connections, but these are certainly more high quality and positive. Another important note, they also included templates for mounting the 4 surrounds and 1 center speaker. I also appreciated that the speakers offer multiple mounting options from table top, speaker mounting kits and simple wall mount with a basic screw/nail single mount. Nice options.
Next was the Denon AVR-S540BT receiver. Bare in mind, this an entry level receiver, but that DOES NOT mean its NOT a good receiver. This is an excellent option for a great choice for any 5.1 home theater. While you can always spend more money (sometimes a LOT more$$$) to get more features and advanced options, but there is nothing wrong this unit. I honestly find it to be nicely equipped for the price-point and found no features I had to have to meet my needs and the needs of most for nice 5.1 option.
The receiver offers multiple HDMI inputs, 3 that are 4K pass-through. The front panel clean and simple, yet effective and efficient. Very handsome unit. The remote is large, but for me, that's a good thing. With my big-old sausage fingers, the buttons are nicely spaced and clearly labeled even for my old 48 year old eyes. I do wish it were back-lit, but still a very nice start.
Set up was straight-forward and simple. On powering unit up, it is best to have it connected to a TV, monitor or projector. If you do, it will clearly display instructions. It will take you from the best suggestions for speaker placement, clear through the speaker attenuation (to get the most balanced surround experience) to the HDMI 4K port set-up. In all, it took less than 5 minutes.
Where the rubber hits the road is in how this sounds. I started off with Dunkirk on Blu-ray. Wow. I was impressed. You could easily hear the bullets and bombs moving towards and from you and the thunder of bombs and mortars all around you. This thing packs a punch, but does so with an impressive elegance for an off-the-shelf box like this. The surround quality was excellent, the highs were crisp without being over-bearing and they blended nicely with crisp and smooth mids which are then impressively melted with the rich and powerful lows. The sub-woofer is excellent. I have a similar sized Bose that is impressive on its merits, but this Polk is the most impressive I have ever experienced in a home environment in a long time.
A final note if you chose to buy this great unit, one nice feature to easily and immediately adjust this to your tastes and your room, on the remote there is a button labeled "CH LEVEL" that will quickly and intuitively allow let you adjust the dB level of each speaker, including the sub. I would suggest fiddling with that for a few minutes and using a couple mediums to fine tune or your ear and room.
While there are far too many other features to list that would take weeks to experience and fine-tune, I have no problem recommending this unit to a friend.
I also have no problem giving a 5 star rating. I am not going to "punish it" for not being a $900 unit. No, it does not have Dolby Atmos. No, it does not have 7.1 or 9.2 or anything else, but what it does have is great digital decoding and an excellent 5.1 option.
Additionally, these speakers are also an excellent value that offer impressive quality. They easily out-kick their coverage. Great value.

Good Headphones, Some Things Better Than Others
on June 2, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
First impressions: Nice packaging, attractive. More substantial than some competitors flimsy and plasicy packaging. Easy to open, no need for a pocket knife to force open a plastic clam-shell.
Inside you'll find the headset, the chords and MixAmp M80 control. These are good looking headphones. They have a substantial look and feel. Some other competitors offer a worthy challenge but they have a plastic look and feel feel and do not have the substantial feel these have. So for, I'm impressed.
As for sound, there are pros and cons. The pros are impressive sound and you have more control over your game experience than most competitors. The highs are crisp, the mids are balanced and the lows are rich and lifelike. One of the better headsets we have ever used. The cons are nitpicking on my part but noticeable. Admitting that it's by design, these units (as shipped) do not isolate background noise nearly as well some of their competitors. For some environments, that may be a good thing, but my son and I prefer the immersion of isolation to disappear into game-play. That said, you can buy a mod-kit that offers the ability to isolate and eliminate most background noise. The mod kit comes with several designs to create a semi-unique headset and includes isolating modules, another mic, upper head-pad and additional ear pads but that does cost around $60 list price. Is it a deal-breaker? By no means. but it is worth noting and additional cost for an already pricey (but worthy) unit.
Another nice feature is that the microphone is easily moved to either let or right side depending on your preference. Overall, these are quality in both appearance and performance.
The mix amp is cool. I like the options it gives over most competitors to afford customized in-game audio experience. In addition to easily controllable volume and mute button, it also comes wit 3 pre-set mix options for game mode, voice mode or chat mode, but also the customized buttons to adjust to your liking. There is also a great volume adjusting wheel and mute button that will light up when in mute mode so your teenager does not need to be embarrassed when you remind them that its time to shower or walk their dog or do the dishes. I know my 17 year old son appreciates the visual acknowledgement that he is indeed muted when mom or dad remind them of their domestic duties
The one item that some other competitors offer that would be a :nice to have is mic muting by simply flipping to mic upwards. There is a nice big button that is a simple thumb move away for muting but it would be nice to have the second muting option. In all honesty, this would not even be something we would know we would miss unless other headphones we've used hadn't had it but if you are used to that feature, it's worth noting this does not have that option.
End of the day, I am impressed with this setup. It does have more high-points than lows and even the lows are easily overcome. If you are ready to take the next step in improving your audio in-game experience, these are a great starting point.
In all, I would easily recommend to a friend or as a gift for the gamer in your life.
