Budget in Price, but not in Performance!

Insignia™ (NS-55DF710NA19) - 55” Class – LED - 2160p – Smart - 4K UHD TV with HDR – Fire TV Edition
The Insignia™ NS-55DF710NA19 is considered a budget 4K UHD TV by most, but it certainly provides a ton of upside to make you think twice about spending 2-5x more for another TV. From the get-go, I can tell you that this sharp LED doesn’t disappoint. The setup process was smooth and painless for me and I would expect it to be the same for most. From attaching the feet to connecting the TV to the network, it was an absolute breeze.
From a picture standpoint, this TV doesn’t disappoint. I have enjoyed HDMI fed content from my cable provider as well as Amazon Prime 4K UHD streams (more on this in connected content later). I haven’t noticed any blurring or distortion when watching sports or high action movies either. I definitely witnessed that on my older LCD and that was annoying. I noticed some subtle things, but nothing was even close to cancelling out the brilliance of the picture. Are there some better? Probably, but I am not about to spend 2-5x more for a marginal improvement.
Obviously, this TV is geared toward streaming content with it being a Smart TV that has dedicated user interface (UI) for Amazon Fire TV. What does this do for you? This means that the main menu for your experience is going to be Amazon’s UI for content. This doesn’t mean you are only subjected to their content though. You can easily connect Hulu, Netflix, Sling TV, HBO, Starz, and more. There are even dedicated buttons on the remote for Prime, Netflix, HBO, and PS Vue. Focusing on the Amazon content, their menu is nicely laid out to let you choose TV, movies, and specific genre content. The addition of the 4K UHD content recommendations is nice because it allows you to see what the TV has to offer right from the start. Of course, an Amazon Prime subscription is going to be needed for a good deal of you viewing pleasure.
Currently, we still have a packaged cable solution so we have to change the input to view that content. While not ideal for viewing our main source of content, it’s not a deal breaker. I did notice that my 6yo and 9yo picked up the change to input and Prime menu options easily and are viewing content on demand just like normal TV. That definitely makes this TV appealing for cord cutters out there. The ability to connect an antenna through coaxial certainly helps with that too. I look forward to testing that out soon enough.
The last thing that I want to weigh-in on is the overall connection to Amazon. While it’s nice to have for us, I certainly don’t see this as a major need to have for others and that might make them shy to look at this lineup. We have a heavy influence of Amazon in the house so our Echo, Echo Dot, Fire Stick, Fire TV box, and now are Insignia™ Fire TV are somewhat linked. However, I can tell you that connection from the Echo or Dot to the TV is a little suspect. There are times where Alexa acts like it doesn’t even exist. However, the remote option to communicate with Alexa is nice and works well. My 6yo daughter gets a kick out of teaching her 70+ year grandfather the voice commands. It shows how easily it can be picked up and used though. Stepping away from that Amazon related piece and getting back to the UI, I have to talk about the TV settings. This one could use some work. When watching a Blu-ray or cable content, you have to go all the way back to the Fire startup screen to reach the settings. This is clearly not ideal. It’s nice to adjust the settings while viewing the content that you are trying to perfect. While this isn’t completely awful, it would be nice to have a dedicated settings menu outside of the Fire UI.
All in all, I can’t say enough about how well the Insignia™ (NS-55DF710NA19) Fire TV performs. We have enjoyed many movie nights already as well as some TV series binging. I look forward to showing it off for football season, neighborhood movie nights with the kids, and much more.

A sleek, solid monitor for any setup
on September 24, 2018

The HP 27q LED QHD is a great monitor for its price point. Let me first start off talking about its performance. The monitor provides a decent viewing angle and displays crisp coloring. It’s a little off at extreme angles, but I am hardly at those angles much to sway my opinion of it. Much like a new Family Room TV, you need monitors to be versatile these days. With so much streaming and gaming taking place, the black levels become somewhat important. As someone who does both, I can appreciate what this monitor provides in that category. I feel like it even outperforms my TVs in that area too. This includes streaming, gaming, and playing movies through the computer.
From a physical standpoint, I think the monitor is easy to assemble and pretty sharp looking. The base and everything snap together easily and all you need is a screwdriver to tighten things up. Aesthetically, the HP 27q has a simple, yet elegant design and the thinness is exceptional. The silvery, thin bezel that really compliments any setup in your office or wherever your computer is located.
One of the interesting things to me was the connections that are offered. It’s versatile with DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort options. While I think that is nice, a second HDMI port would have been nice. It’s not a deal breaker though.
Overall, I think this is a nice monitor to use many different ways. It may take some time adjusting the settings to get it where you want it, but I don’t think you will be disappointed once you get it there. Just remember to plan for space on your desk with how big it is and be ready for a crisp picture once you establish your settings.

Samsung Blu-Ray Player? No, it's more than that!
on August 21, 2018

The Samsung UBD-M9700 is more than just an updated Blu-Ray player. This definitely gets us one step closer to an all-inclusive media hub. While I will still watch Blu-Rays on it, it can do so much more.
However, let me start at the beginning and talk about the setup. The user interface is very nice and easy to work with. It was almost ridiculously easy. I plugged it in, connected it to my wireless system, and the rest was history. It connected to my Samsung TV and LG soundbar almost instantly. From there, it was just loading my credentials for streaming services. The number of apps that are preloaded are nice too. I didn’t have to go searching for them and wait for a download. I was able to stream right away.
From a quality perspective, you can see the nice sharp image transfer from the get go. I noticed the crispness while streaming and watching movies via Blu-Ray. While my TV’s quality is already pretty good, this definitely enhanced it a little more. That’s what you get with this ultra 4K HDR supported beast. From a sound perspective, I don’t think it misses a beat either. The clarity and richness are tremendous. I love how it doesn’t appear to downgrade it at all.
The last piece is just a little note on some of the features. The remote is blah, but I can get around that when it comes with so much more. As I mentioned before, there are apps already downloaded. You can hit up you Netflix, Amazon Prime, Google Play, YouTube, Hulu, Vudu, and more right from the front screen. There are more options there to tinker with everything as well. Also, you can stream from Samsung UBD-M9700 right to your Samsung phones/tablets. That’s quite the little gem if you are trying to watch something on your own or handing it off the little ones to keep them entertained.
All in all, this is an awesome media hub. The Samsung UBD-M9700 might be a little expensive, but I think you can definitely get your money’s worth. The colors, sound, and streaming options wrap this up with a nice little bow that’s hard not to open as soon as you see it.

Good for music when on the move, but not much more

The Sony - WF-SP700N Sport True Wireless Noise Canceling Earbud Headphones has a lot of good things going for it, but I am not sold on it as my “Go To” listening device. One of the key reasons is that you will have to download Sony's headphones connect app in order to get the best sound quality out of it. It took me about a good week to figure out what setting was best based on what I was listening to as well. Without it, everything was very tinny and came through with poor quality. It was actually a little painful on the ears.
On the good side, I did enjoy listening to music once I figured out the aforementioned settings. I found my eclectic taste in music was well received and came through in great quality. The charging case is also a nice feature too. It does a great job of charging the buds when needed. Speaking of the buds, the option to swap out the ear plugs is nice because the standard ones are a little too big for my ears. They are pretty comfortable too. I have had some in-ear options cause discomfort if worn for too long.
From an activity perspective, I found the comfort level to still be good while moving around. They stay in place very well don’t create more noise like some. The settings for turning on noise cancelling, ambient sounds, and everything off is nice as well. It’s a nice easy button click that works well.
All in all, these are a great addition to a workout warrior’s attire or someone that likes listening to music without the hassle of a wire. Outside of that, I would have to pass. Here are some pros and cons to help show why:
Pros:
- It has good sound quality for a true wireless setup
- It also has a good quantity of bass with minimal distortion compared to other true wireless options
- A good, stable connection via Bluetooth
- The noise cancelling works perfectly and you can toggle between ambient and noise cancelling modes just by clicking on the left earpiece
- The app comes with different profiles for equalizers
- They do not fall out even when shaking my head vigorously or moving around
Cons:
- Outside of music, I found a delay when watching video even when chose to prioritize connection
- The Sound quality is bad when not using with Sony's headphones connect app
- The equalizer profiles do not allow user customization (only able to choose from preset profiles)
- The battery life is only 3 hours per full charge. I can get days out of some wired options

A big package with a huge sound
on May 23, 2018
Posted by: Evolved1

I have only had personal experiences with one other sound bar prior to this one, but this was a mind blowing experience. The LG SK10Y comes in a very large box and packs a huge punch. How large of a box? Let's just say that the delivery guy asked me where I wanted the pallet when he pulled up. That was a tad ridiculous for what amounts to a 40lbs package. If you are picking it up at the store, make sure you have the space to fit it in your SUV, Van, or truck.
Now, let's get to the good stuff. This almost 58" long soundbar didn't disappoint. There are several ways to connect the LG SK10Y to your TV, but my TV is a little older so I am using the optical connection. I can also use the Bluetooth and Chromecast options to play things from my phone and/or tablet too. From a sound perspective, every connection has performed well. Between the bar and the subwoofer, the music and movies that I have played have been amazing. This is also aided by several sound profiles. I have mostly used the Standard and Movie selections and I am very impressed with the clarity. The bass compliments the vocals and it doesn't sound like 2 separate pieces like some soundbars and subwoofers do.
Lastly, I had to resort to using a table to accommodate the size of this beast. However, the packaging does include the brackets to wall mount it. This will be a terrific piece to a home theater and could look real nice mounted on the wall beneath the TV. You can even round out your theater room or man cave with the rear speakers (SPK8-S). This is something I plan to do because the LG SK10Y will be a fixture in my man cave for quite some time.

A great speaker to liven up things
on April 4, 2018

The Sony SRS-XB31 Portable Bluetooth Speaker is a very good addition for a family. It's almost like having a ready to go party in a small package. With the light show and sound, it will easily make itself the life of the party.
I don't claim to be an audiophile, but the Sony SRS-XB31 is pretty darn good. I enjoy clear vocals and a good base thump depending on what I am listening to. It's not near as good as some other high end pieces that I have in the house, but it's easily better than most. One of my favorite things to do is to connect it to my Amazon Echo Dot to increase it's sound. I can do this through the 3.5mm jack that is there. This along with the NFC/Bluetooth connections make this very easy to pair with phones and other devices to stream audio.
Some of my other favorite things are:
-The button to turn off the lights (this same button also will tell you what your battery level it at)
-USB out for charging a device
-The rubber feet on the bottom for grip
-How light it is to carry around
-It can be paired with others
-A somewhat rubber sealed cover for the button and plug areas
-Identifiable NFC locator on top
-The Sony Extra Bass
Some things that I wish were better:
-A button on the speaker to control the bass
-A light near or back-lit area for the buttons
-The "Party Booster" option is kind of gimmicky and it doesn't work the greatest

Easy to setup and use for added coverage
on March 17, 2018
Posted by: Evolved1
from Naperville, IL, USA
I live in a 2-story house with finished basement and we have always had been worried about our coverage throughout the whole house. We also have about a good size suburban lot of land and I noticed that certain areas give me issues when I am mowing the lawn. With all of that being the case, I was happy to pick up the RE9000 to extend our network. This paired easily with our Linksys router. The whole house is covered and I can’t wait for it to warm up so I can test the coverage while mowing.
To provide a little more detail, the setup as a wireless range extender using the browser-based method and a cell phone took about 5-7 minutes. It was very easy to follow and enjoy right away. There are a few cool things that make me recommend the Linksys RE9000 for extending your network. The Spot Finder screen, for the setup, shows the ideal distance the RE9000 should be placed from the router. That is a very useful tool. I also enjoy the fact that my same SSID can be carried through and I don’t to worry about that disgusting _EXT being found at the end of it. This allows for that carefree roaming from place to place around the house. All in all, this is an easy device to set up with little maintenance needed once you have it in place.

A very good workstation without needing a tower
on March 16, 2018
Posted by: Evolved1
from Naperville, IL, USA
The HP Pavilion 27” All-In-One is a very nice desktop computer. In the past, I have always been opposed to All-In-Ones for many reasons. I was always fearful of it not living up to my tower setups or one issue causing the machine to be useless. However, I can say the HP Pavilion 27” All-In-One changed my tune. I was impressed from the moment I took it out of the box. I remember the days of gaming and watching on a 27” tube TV and this blew me away from a size aspect. My current monitor situation is a 23” and 21” side-by-side for work and play. This size had me rethinking that right away. The design is well done with bezel and the Bang & Olufsen speakers beneath it. It’s quite impressive in appearance and uses very little space wherever you place it.
While it’s not the best running machine in my house, it is pretty close. From the time I started it up, I could see that the combination of the Core i7 processor, 12 GB of RAM, and 1 TB hard drive with Intel Optane memory would perform well. The setup piece flew with ease and then I was able to have some real fun. It did an amazing job of streaming shows and basketball games even though I was 2 floors away from my router. I was impressed with the quality of the Wireless-N connection that I was getting. Next, I decided to test the performance even more with some full screen gaming. I didn’t choose the most resource intensive game ever, but I made sure to turn everything up on it. I must see that it did a pretty good job despite being an integrated graphics card. I even used the touchscreen functionality during the gaming and the responsiveness was great.
There are some other nice features on this unit as well. There are 3 USB ports (1 3.0 & 2 2.0), HDMI Input and HDMI Output on the back where you attach the AC adapter. There are also a few connections/media pieces on the bottom: headphone jack, microphone jack, and media reader. Lastly, there is a DVD/CD Burner on the side and a HD camera with a privacy switch at the top. This unit really does pack everything you could get in a tower unit.
From a negative standpoint, I don’t have much to complain about. I do wish the monitor aspect turned/swivel on top of the tilting. Another is the noise level increases from time to time from the processing. The resolution is very good for a 27”, but it could be better with today’s technology. The last items that come to mind are the mouse and keyboard. While they are nice wireless options, they could be a little higher in ergonomics or quality.

Tons of flexibility and no stretching needed!

I am a big fan of versatility and that is certainly provided in the Lenovo Yoga 920. My wife and I were looking for a good product to meet her business needs and this does just that. She has the ability to work in laptop mode and keep all of her data up to date. Then she has the ability to rotate the top to display products or presentations to clients in tablet mode. You can see both versions in the photo.
For me, I also love the technical specs. In a pinch, we could use this to entertain our kids in tablet mode. The screen resolution is great and is great for watching shows. The sound that comes with it is pretty good as well. Transitioning from viewing to gaming, the touchscreen is a great tool for their little fingers or the included stylus. I think it's great that Lenovo included it.
Some other positives are the backlit keyboard, the ease of transitioning between modes, long life of the battery, the sleek design, the speakers, and the microphone. The only con that I care to list is the keyboard. It feels off to me, but that's just a personal choice. I don't think it's a deal breaker though.
All in all, the Lenovo Yoga 920 is a sleek, powerful, and very functional machine. This is great for business and/or personal use. I don't think you can go wrong with this addition to fill your needs.

Great picture and performance by Epson
on October 8, 2017
Posted by: Evolved1
from Naperville, IL, USA
Let me first start out by saying this projector is extremely light and portable. I can totally see traveling with this when it's possible that we might need it. Tailgating is one idea that comes to mind and then movie nights during rainy days at our lakehouse is another. The picture quality is good enough for daytime and nighttime viewing, but you have to stay away from direct light. However, that's the case for any projection system.
When it comes to setup and use, the Epson Home Cinema 2150 is pretty user friendly. My first endeavor with the unit was utilizing an Amazon FIre Stick for Thursday Night Football. I literally fired up the system, plugged in the FIre Stick, and just navigated to the game. It was super easy and the stream was excellent. I was able to project in on a neutral color wall with no issues.
I also spent some time tinkering with the mobile app and remote as well. They were both pretty easy to use. I most say that I was impressed with both of them for different reasons. The remote actually worked with the Amazon Fire Stick while navigating. That was certainly a nice feature that I wasn't prepared for. From the mobile app perspective, the screen share was pretty nice. I can see that being useful in very specific situations, but not a ton since I couldn't seem to get video to cast to the screen that way.
The only knock that I would throw its way is the sound of the fan. If you don't have the sound on, it's quite loud. Of course, you expect to hear it from any projector, but it's something to note. Outside of that, I would say the Epson Home Cinema 2150 is a projector that I would recommend to someone who is looking for one.

Lean & Mean Machine
By Evolved1
The first impression was a good one. After unboxing the Spectre, I placed it on my desk and my 8" tablet was next to it. Even closed, the laptop was clearly thinner than the tablet. That is how you make a great first impression. The second thing that I noticed was the weight of the machine. It is easily the lightest laptop that I have ever held.
Now, how does it perform. I am still getting familiar with Windows 10 so it's a little foreign to me, but I am liking it. I think a combination of the OS and the build contribute to the quickness that this laptop brings to the table. Combining that with the vivid screen, you have yourself a beautiful and wonderfully performing laptop.
My lone negative is the keyboard. I know it's thin so the option of backlit keys wasn't going to happen. I am a big fan and wish that was available in some fashion. The other thing is the design of the keys. HP clearly wanted to condense things for the size, but having to hit the function key to hit some pretty common keys is cumbersome. I am sure I will get used to it with time, but I like the standard keyboard layout better.
Overall, it's a great machine that will travel well when I need it. I would recommend this for anyone looking to have great performance in a ultra-thin laptop.
