Good camera with good features
on April 4, 2024
Posted by: Evolved1
Our family has been using Blink cameras for a couple of years now. We have Blink Mini’s around the house to help with keeping an eye on our pets as well as the entryways. Well, we now have the new Blink Mini 2 to add to the mix.
To start, let’s review what’s in the box. There is the camera, power cable, plug, starting guide, and mounting screws. Everything fits nicely in a compact box. After unpacking, I went through the steps to set it up. The walk through the app is painless, and the camera was up and running in no time. It doesn’t get much easier than this.
Blink lets us know that this new addition, the Mini 2, has improved on a lot of its predecessor’s offerings. They have added a little spotlight to help with things in dim lighting or at nighttime. Depending on the placement and situation, it does an okay job. It’s not going to be wonderful for illuminating things in the distance, but it works decently for things near it. Another improvement is the quality of the picture being shown. I did a side-by-side comparison with the older model and there is a definite upgrade in what’s being presented. The images are crisper, the viewing angle is wider, and the lighting is much better when it’s darker. Finally, they designed this model to be better equipped to work outside. I haven’t been able to check that yet (thank you, Midwest Spring weather), but it’s on my list when it warms up.
Is the Blink Mini 2 perfect? No. However, if you are looking for a simple camera and system that can tackle almost anything, then there aren’t better than the Blink Mini 2 and its price point. This little camera provides a quality picture with decent audio as well as options (some free and other fee based) to help you watch your pets, secure your home, or just talk to someone that’s at another camera.

Good protection for two phones at a good price
on March 20, 2024
Posted by: Evolved1
The Insignia 2x Reinforced HD GLass Screen Protector is a good investment for those with a Galaxy S24+. This pack came as advertised with two protectors in it. That makes it good for households that have two of the same phones in it. Works great for us!
Inside the box, you will find almost two of everything except the alignment tool. This includes the wet and dry cloths to clean your phones screen as well as the dust removal adhesive that will remove any lint left on there. The next part is where you attach the alignment tool before applying the screen protector.
For the most part, this was pretty simple and went according to documentation. I did have some issues with bubbles, and that’s where I have to ding this pack. They say to push the bubbles out to the edges. However, they don’t provide a tool to do so. I tried countless times with my fingers to push it out, but they were still there. I remember kits for my previous phones that provided a tool to help. I would have greatly appreciated that with this one.
The installation is simple. The quality and clarity appear to be great. I don’t see any visibility issues and the biometrics for security are all working well. Like I said to start, this is a good investment, but it could be better. That tool is all I am really missing to make things great.

Sleek, Powerful, and Flexible Laptop For All
on March 15, 2024
Posted by: Evolved1
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 (GU605MZ) is capable of making you second guess the need for a gaming rig because this laptop packs a ton of power. Out of the box, you can see the beautiful design and feel the quality. There’s nothing cheap about this laptop on both the outside and the inside.
From the time you start it up, you can see and hear the quality of the laptop. It was super smooth from setup to the first time I fired up a video. The power is there and there wasn’t a ton of noise to let you know it was being stressed either. The combination of the GeForce RTX 480 with the 240Hz refresh rate of the OLED screen presented beautiful colors while gaming, streaming, and more. To touch on the gaming a little more, I didn’t notice any lag or screen tearing either. I was really impressed with how smooth things were as well as how vivid the colors were. It really had me questioning if it was better than my ASUS gaming rig. That says a lot.
There are three more things that came to light while I was gaming as well. The first was the noise level that the laptop produced while working hard. The fans were working, but it was really quiet. I turned up the volume a tad, but it was nothing compared to what I have had to do on other laptops that I have played games on. The second thing is the sound quality. I thought the sound was pretty crisp and I didn’t feel like it was muffled or inadequate at all. Like I said, the speakers are more than capable of making you forget about the noise level of the fans because they are producing brilliantly. The last thing is the battery. This is one knock that I have to throw out there. The battery went quick when I was gaming. This is where you can tell that the power of this laptop is really working hard. I didn’t time it to the exact minute, but I definitely didn’t get two hours worth of battery life. That was disappointing. I would certainly recommend gaming while plugged in when you can. The good part is that it charges at a pretty good pace too.
In addition to the gorgeous display and great performance, this laptop has a really impressive keyboard and trackpad. The backlit keyboard is a wonderful touch and you can use the function keys to work through a number of options. You can also use the Aura Creator to create your own too. There are also keys for the brightness of the display, Armoury Crate, keyboard brightness, airplane mode, and more. They did a great job designing it. The trackpad is nice too. It’s very large and I had no issues with its responsiveness. I prefer a separate mouse, but it can certainly get the job done.
Ultimately, there are only a few small things that keep the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 from being perfect. However, they aren’t enough for me to not recommend it for the gamers and high productivity users that want something portable. There’s just too much power and beauty for anyone to ignore.

Great sound, but not perfect
on January 31, 2024
Posted by: Evolved1
The Razer - Nommo V2 X 2.0 PC Gaming Speakers are a nice addition for any gamer or music enthusiast that’s looking for a non-headphone or no-subwoofer sound experience. There’s a lot of good to be found in those experiences, but there’s some items that leave you wanting something better.
Let’s start with the physical appearance of these speakers. Razer is known for not skimping on the quality and there’s no deviation here. The Nommo V2 X speakers are uniquely designed to bring the best sound possible. There are two 3” full range drivers with rear-facing bass ports on these “cans”. You can really feel the quality of those components as soon as you take them out of the box. The weight is there compared to other speakers, but it’s not over the top. The size could be a little smaller, but the quality and look will help you forget all about that. I do wish that Razer had kept the RGB on this model.
Considering there are only two speakers in this set, it’s pretty surprising how much sound they can provide. Within the Synapse app, you can set the EQ to accommodate specific entertainment types or customize it by adjusting the various levels yourself. You can also shift between Stereo and THX Spatial Audio. The ability to switch based on device or listening preference is huge. That 5.1 or 7.1 option can really increase your listening pleasure. I’ve put them through the ringer with sports, movies, gaming, and music. I haven’t been disappointed yet.
From a connection perspective, you have two options with the Nommo V2 X. There is the USB-A to USB-C connection that you use with your PC, PS4 or PS5, but then you can also connect via Bluetooth to a phone, tablet, or Nintendo Switch. Even though these are labeled as PC speakers, it’s nice to have options. I am primarily using them on my PC, but I have connected my phone on occasion. It takes a little time to get used to toggling the speakers between connections. I wish it was a little smoother of a process there.
The last thing that I want to get back to is the Synapse software. I have other Razer devices and the issues were minimal until now. The first was I couldn’t get the automatic firmware update for the Nommo V2 X to work. It took some interactions with Razer Support to get over that hump. Having to install, uninstall, disconnect all Razer devices, and more was quite the pain. Since then, things have been okay with the speaker. However, the update seems to have impacted another Razer device. It’s very annoying. Here’s hoping that a future update will address that as well as improve Synapse altogether.

Great mouse for the no frills loving gamer
on November 2, 2023
Posted by: Evolved1
The Corsair M75 Air Wireless Ultra-Lightweight Gaming Mouse is a very unique entry into the gaming world. As someone that has owned several gaming mice over my years, I have developed my own preferences as I am sure others have as well.
Let’s start at step one with this mouse. The unboxing and setup is extremely simple. In the box, you will find the mouse, a dongle, the cord, and two booklets. I went ahead and set up the mouse with the cord running to the back of my rig. I already had iCue installed and it recognized it right away. iCue has its own issues, but things are pretty straightforward with the M75 Air. You can set up the functionality for the side buttons, set the preferred DPI, calibrate the mouse, and more.
Once fully charged, there are three options for using the M75 Air. You can use it wired, wireless with the USB dongle, or wireless via Bluetooth. All three appear to function well. I didn’t see a dropoff when switching between them at all. These options also make it possible to connect to just about any device as well. That’s something that I will have to check out with a tablet at a later time. The ability to change between the connections is made easy with the button on the bottom of the mouse. There’s even a little key on the bottom to show you what’s there.
From a physical standpoint, it’s pretty slick with its all black look. The only color is a little yellow in the scroll wheel. For me, it’s not enough at that price point. I would like to have a small hint of RGB or something. Yes, it’s superficial, but it helps it to blend in with the rest of my peripherals. Outside of that, the M75 Air is aptly named. This thing is so light. It made me question the build and if there was a missing weight to add that is still in the box. I am used to a mouse that has some weight to it. It’s not a bad transition, but it takes some time to get the feel for it.
Functionally, I had no issues while gaming. It held its own against others that I have used. The only thing that I don’t like is having to go into iCue to adjust the DPI. I would much prefer to have a button already there to adjust to some presets like I can with others. It’s not a terrible pain to launch iCue to do it, but it’s not efficient in my book.
All in all, the Corsair M75 Air is a pretty good mouse for the no frills desired gamers that are out there. I question if the performance, look, and options meet the price point though. I would like to see a little more to it based on what I have used and seen on a gaming mouse at that level.

All of Alexa while on the move!
on October 20, 2023
Posted by: Evolved1
As a long time Echo Dot owner, the ability to take its features on the go is something that I’ve always wanted. In full disclosure, I had this with the 2nd Gen Echo Dot via a battery operated speaker that it attached to. Since that broke, and I upgraded to new versions, I have longed to have this portability back in my life. Well, welcome the Amazon Battery Base for Echo Dots by Mission. This works with the normal 4th & 5th Gen Echo Dots as well as the ones with the clocks built in.
The setup and installation was as easy as it gets. You just unplug your Echo Dot, place it in the battery dock, connect the cable to the Dot and base, and then the power cord goes into the base. After some time, the base will be fully charged. Once it’s charged, you can travel the world with it. Okay, maybe not the world, but everywhere around your home and yard as long as you have a stable Wi-Fi connection.
For our family, we love to have music on the patio when outside. Yes, we can use our phone with the Alexa app and a Bluetooth speaker. However, this is so much better. You can continue with all of the same Alexa commands on your Dot without having to get a device out to control it. This is also a big win with kids for bath/shower time. Giving them the joy of music while getting clean is always a win. As far as the sound goes, you still get the same quality as if it’s plugged in. The Amazon - Battery Base for 4th and 5th Gen Echo Dot by Mission doesn’t interfere there at all. I tried various songs, commands, and anything else I could think of. There was never a downtick in performance.
When it comes down to it, I can’t recommend the Amazon - Battery Base for 4th and 5th Gen Echo Dot enough. This is a must have for anyone that wants to take their Echo Dot and Alexa capabilities all over their home. The sound is still great. The illumination of the Dot is not impacted. All that and the freedom of no power cord. What more could you want!

Great look and feel...
on October 20, 2023
Posted by: Evolved1
I have owned a few gaming keyboards over my 20+ years of PC gaming, and the Corsair K70 Core RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is a very nice addition to those starting out or looking for a mid level upgrade. There are some wonderful features with this keyboard, but there are also some pain points to work around.
It’s a pretty simple unboxing process. It’s literally just the keyboard in all its glory. After taking it out, I connected it to my gaming rig. I already had iCue installed since I have another Corsair product already, so I was met with a firmware upgrade for the K70 Core. The effort there was painless, but that’s about where it stops with iCue’s configuration and performance. My iCue exposure is for a set of headphones, so there’s not much to do there. The setup, configuration, and reliability of it for the keyboard was definitely a challenge. I could have everything configured and performing, but then I would close the app and see it all revert. It took some trial and error, but I finally got my Rainbow Wave and my hot keys to stick. There was one other thing that I was perplexed by. The volume/brightness/whatever you configure it to do dial says it should light up per iCue. However, I don’t think the K70 Core can do that. I am not 100% on this, but everything I tried resulted in no changes. I think this might be for other K70 models. If that’s the case, it would be nice if iCue recognized that. When getting beyond the iCue “fun”, the keyboard is pretty stunning. I thought the brightness was good and pretty vivid. It certainly met my expectations, and my desk is right next to a window. It was even better at night. It complemented the rest of my RGB very well.
The feel of the K70 Core is really nice. I thought it had a decent weight to it while still feeling very light. It was pretty interesting to have a mechanical keyboard that was so quiet. That is thanks to the sound dampening of two layers embedded in the keyboard. As someone that is used to the clicky mechanical environment, this was a unique change. The keystrokes were very responsive and typing was pretty fluid. I will say that the keys are super sensitive too. I found several instances of just slightly touching the top of a key, and I would see it react as if I was holding it down. A tad annoying, but that’s something that can be conditioned for the user to not do. From a gaming standpoint, I didn’t have any issues. I was able to flow through the various games I played with ease. I don’t know if I saw an upgrade using this keyboard versus my previous one, but I certainly didn’t see a downtick in any way. It can hold its own there.
I know there are various versions of the K70, but this one didn’t come with a wrist rest. I definitely think not including that is a miss. It definitely made using it a little taxing and my hands, wrists, and forearms felt the difference. Corsair includes that on most, and I know I can get my own, but I feel like any good gaming keyboard will do what it can to make the gamer more comfortable over an extended period of time.
When it comes down to it, the Corsair K70 Core RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard would be a great addition to any desk jockeys setup. After you get beyond iCue, it’s hard to complain about the performance of the keyboard. It performed well in all avenues, takes up less space than most, and has a great look to it.

A sleek prebuilt gaming rig with a flair
on October 13, 2023
Posted by: Evolved1
The ASUS ROG G16CH is a very good prebuilt gaming desktop that’s ready to tackle your entertainment needs. This beast comes in a nice little package too. Its appearance has subtle notes of flare when looking at it head on. The mesh front panel combined with the RGB lighting give it a very sleek look. Then you move to the side and you are graced with an open view of the beauty that’s within. ASUS did a great job of providing a view of the clean but technically sound internal build that is complemented by more wonderful RGB.
Taking all of that RGB to the next level, ASUS set up the G16CH with the Aura Creator to help you build your own color/pattern design across other compatible devices as well as the desktop itself. There is even the ability to sync it with music. While not a huge selling feature, it's a nice little perk added to the Aura Sync found within the Armoury Crate. I look forward to tinkering with it more.
That wonderful open side panel gives you more than just additional RGB accents. It provides an inside look at the power that’s being used. This G16CH has 32 GB of RAM, the 13th Gen Intel(R) Core)™ i7-13700KF @ 3.4 GHz, 1 TB SSD drive, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics card. I run with two 27” monitors as well as a 32” curved. I’ve been able to stream movies and game at the same time without any issues at all. I run everything at max levels and I didn’t experience any lag or screen tearing. The games flowed with ease and I was able to enjoy the crisp details on the entire screen real estate. In the past, I’ve had previous prebuilt rigs perform this well, but that came with some very extensive noise. It was almost like it was about to take off. The G16CH definitely increased in sound, but it was nothing compared to the other. This was definitely an acceptable amount of noise to perform and to keep things cool.
Speaking of cool, the design of the chassis is more than looks. It works really well at keeping the temperature down. There is venting in the front that looks great, but also aids in airflow when coupled with venting in the back and bottom. To go along with that, there are two fans on the top as well as one on the back. Of course, there are additional cooling elements for the GPU and processor working with everything else to keep things cool while staying fast. The last couple of things to note on the chassis are the “D-ring” to easily move or carry the rig, and the fold out headset holder. Both are nice touches.
All in all, I am pretty impressed with the ASUS ROG G16CH. ASUS has come a long way and I am happy to have them back in my computing world. My first PC was built with an ASUS motherboard in the mid 90s and that thing performed like a champ. My hope is that this PC will continue to help them live up to the hype in my world. The one small knock I do have is that included keyboard and mouse seem like just throw-ins. They could do a little more there, but they can help you get up and running.

A Party Tower Bringing The Boom!!!
on August 20, 2023
Posted by: Evolved1
The LG XBOOM XL5 touts itself as a party tower with 200W pushed through two 2.5” tweeters and a 6.5” woofer. Going beyond the sound production, the XL5 also has ring lighting around the woofer as well two strobe lights sandwiching it. Taking just those two things into account, one can see why it's called a party tower, but there is so much more. It’s not just a Bluetooth speaker because they also have inputs for a guitar and a microphone. That takes it to another level for guitar players out there as well as the karaoke lovers.
Now, let’s take a deeper look at the appearance of the XBOOM XL5. This tower is sharp with its mostly black coloring. It really helps to make the lights pop since there aren’t any other colors to compete with. On the side, you have red accent coloring with XBOOM printed there. Then you have two red black handles on the back. All in all, it’s a pretty slick looking tower. From there, you can start pumping in the music to get the lighting going. There is a button on top to help change the lighting, but that can also be done through the LG XBOOM app on the phone. You can even do some customization with the colors or even add your phone’s flash to the party by syncing it flash with the music. The one thing that would be nice here is the ability to turn off the strobe lights or change the colors of them. It would be nice to see an update with the ability to leave the woofer ring light on while turning off the strobes.
Alongside the button for the lights, you will find buttons for the Sound Boost, power, volume, play/pause, and the connectivity. There are also indicators for the Party Link option, Bluetooth, and USB connections. A lot of these pieces can also be found in the app. It’s nice to have that flexibility between the physical speaker and the app. On the back of the tower, you will find the inputs for the guitar, microphone, USB, and AC adapter. Right above the mic and guitar, you will find dials to turn them up or down. It’s nice to have the ability to amplify them or turn them down if needed. The last thing to mention about the tower’s physical nature is its size. They say it’s a “pocket handle” for easy relocation, but that’s not super easy. The XL5 is almost 2 feet tall and weighs about 25 lbs. You can definitely feel the weight when trying to move it with just one handle. You almost need to use both handles just to feel secure when carrying it.
From a sound perspective, the boom is evident with the XL5. The 200W over the tweeters and woofer really produce some great sound. I was able to put it to the test with a couple of different music genres as well as some sports talk radio. Utilizing the Equalizer options in the app, I was able to get the sound I desired depending on what I was listening to. The Sound Boost is nice for that extra kick of bass or you can turn it off to enjoy things more at a normal level. Either way the sound won’t disappoint. There is also the option to use the app to jump into DJ mode and have some fun with various noises and a turntable. That’s a cool little feature to help with the party.
Overall, the LG XBOOM XL5 lives up the billing as a Party Tower. I would like a second to link them up and get more of a stereo sound. However, I can’t knock it for that. The look, sound, and appearance are well done. The weight is just a product of the quality that’s inside. I look forward to using it at the lake when we are partying or when we have gatherings at the house.

Impressive on many levels

Sony, Sony, Sony! They’ve outdone themselves again. The Sony INZONE M3 27" FHD 240Hz Gaming Monitor is a beast in many different areas. Most of that is good, but one part is meh in my opinion.
For starters, the Sony INZONE M3 is super fast while presenting bright and quality images at the same time. I have witnessed this in both gaming and watching videos. The detail is so clear and never seems to blur or tear. This is due to the 240Hz refresh rate and the 1ms GtG response rate, which is available on the DisplayPort and HDMI inputs. It’s even taken a step further with the NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility and the HDMI 2.1 Variable Refresh Rate. Sony’s INZONE M3 is also VESA certified with Display HDR 400 and has over 99% coverage of the sRGB spectrum. This allows for a large range of colors to be vibrant while providing detailed shading with the best amount of brightness. It’s really hard to even describe the beauty that is presented while gaming. I’ve had so many others claim greatness and this just puts them to shame.
Most of my gaming is through the PC and the Sony INZONE M3 comes with a software solution that will help you get things in order for the best experience. You have different picture modes and adjustments that can be set to your liking. There is also the ability to set up profiles for the picture and audio based on the game you are playing. Maybe you want something different for ambient sounds and details for an MMORPG versus an FPS battle. Well, you’re in luck because this can make it an easy change for you. On another quick gaming note, the INZONE M3 has the ability to optimize and adjust modes and settings for the PS5. That’s something that I look forward to checking out soon.
With regards to the Sony INZONE M3’s appearance, it’s a very unique design that some will like and others will not. I probably sit in the middle on this one and that’s because of the stand. I can totally see the design and coloring playing nicely with a PS5, but it’s a little too much on a desk for me. I do like that they made the effort to provide you a place to hide your cables through the center pillar. That’s a great feature. They could have made a stronger clip though. It tends to come off easily if made too taunt. This isn’t a huge deal breaker for me though. Currently, I have 3 monitors on a triple arm mount and I am already trying to decide which one is getting the boot for the M3. It should slide in easily and compliment everything else very well.
Lastly, the Sony INZONE M3 has an Auto KVM Switch. I haven’t set it up yet, but it’s on my list. I need to get things squared away in my office to truly test it right. This is something that I have always wanted to do because I have a desktop and my work laptop on the same setup. This would allow me to eliminate a keyboard and free up more space.
Ultimately, I am truly pleased with the Sony INZONE M3. The 27” size is really nice and the features are amazing. I really look forward to more gaming on it and possibly adding more of Sony’s INZONE lineup to pair with it.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Lean & Mean Machine

The first impression was a good one. After unboxing the Spectre, I placed it on my desk and my 8" tablet was next to it. Even closed, the laptop was clearly thinner than the tablet. That is how you make a great first impression. The second thing that I noticed was the weight of the machine. It is easily the lightest laptop that I have ever held.
Now, how does it perform. I am still getting familiar with Windows 10 so it's a little foreign to me, but I am liking it. I think a combination of the OS and the build contribute to the quickness that this laptop brings to the table. Combining that with the vivid screen, you have yourself a beautiful and wonderfully performing laptop.
My lone negative is the keyboard. I know it's thin so the option of backlit keys wasn't going to happen. I am a big fan and wish that was available in some fashion. The other thing is the design of the keys. HP clearly wanted to condense things for the size, but having to hit the function key to hit some pretty common keys is cumbersome. I am sure I will get used to it with time, but I like the standard keyboard layout better.
Overall, it's a great machine that will travel well when I need it. I would recommend this for anyone looking to have great performance in a ultra-thin laptop.

Please disregard the aforementioned missing backlit keyboard lines. I have found it and I am not sure how I didn't find it over the weeks of usage before the review. Thank you to the two comments or I would never continued the quest for it.
