This is a brutal film, my wife and I loved! At the time, a relatively unknown French writer/ director, you may also know him from his more recent film Mirrors. The name High Tension fits this film. It is very intense and very fast paced. Plus, there's a twist at the end you never see coming. This is a great thill ride of a movie. Even though it's in French, it's still definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend it! Also, another really good French film is Martyrs, and if you haven't seen Mirrors, you should!
What's great about it: Very intense and a great twist at the end.
A movie that is guaranteed to leave even the most jaded horror fans winded during its unrelentingly sadistic final act, Japanese cinema renegade Takashi Miike's Audition gets top-shelf treatment, thanks to the folks at Venture Video. Presented in 1.85:1 widescreen, the image is clear and the transfer free of any notable debris. The colors are rich and vivid, and the blacks solid, with no signs of pixilation or edge enhancement. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, while lacking dynamics throughout most of the running time, completely unleashes a flood of disturbing sound effects upon viewers at the most unexpected and jarring moments -- with Miike's masterful use of audio becoming especially prominent and discomforting during the notorious climax. If the flood of disturbing imagery has viewers covering their eyes in disgust, there is virtually no escaping the horrific auditory effects without leaving the room (something that the majority of viewers will have absolutely no qualms about doing). In regard to extra features, a commentary track by Miike (which offers a spoken English interpretation of the director's Japanese comments) covers only the final 30 minutes of the film. What a 30 minutes it is though. It's obvious that, while Miike is a master of disturbingly unhinged imagery, he isn't without a sense of humor about his craft -- and it's clear that he is keenly aware of the effect that his use of violence will have on the audience. Though the final act is somewhat confusing in its narrative structure, Miike offers some clarity regarding what is real and what is fantasy as the film gradually descends into madness. An additional onscreen interview conducted in the historic Egyptian Theater finds a relaxed Miike detailing the origins of the story, how he became involved with the adaptation, the casting, the cinematography, and the manner in which he manipulated the emotions of viewers by pulling the rug out from under them when the film takes a sharp turn from romantic drama to unabashed terror. An excerpt from Visiting with Huell Howser: American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theater offers an in-depth look at the theater's rich history, with trailers, a biography and filmography for Miike, and a photo gallery rounding out the appealing selection of extras.

I think this is one of my favorite films by Takashi Miike, my wife and I love it! The first 30 to 45 minutes are a little slow, but it starts to build up to the last 30 minutes, which are really intense! This is a really twisted and disturbing film. There's just not enough female slasher films. But, there are a few and this one's definitely at the top. If you haven't seen this film yet, you really should. Whether you like Japanese films or not, this is a must own. Trust me! I highly recommend it! Also, if you're looking for some more female slasher films, let me recommend The Killing Gene, Monster (based on a true story), Teeth, High Tension, and Slaughter from the Afterdark Horrorfest III series.

I love this movie. I remember watching it many years ago and loved it then. So, when they came out with the final cut, I immediately went out and got it. To be honest, it was so long ago when I last saw it that I could only tell minor changes. But apparently, some people didn't think too much of this version. Me personally, I thought it was great. Very clear, digitally remastered and visually stunning. This is a very artistic film. I highly recommend it! Also, if you like visually artistic films like this you may want to check out The Fountain and Dark City, two very unique films.

This was a fantastic film! My wife and I loved it! They did a great job with the character depth and giving you a taste of human vs. human, not just human vs. monster. This film will tug at your emotions, and it's suppose to. Many people said there wasn't enough of the creatures in the film, that's only part of the story. It also shows how different kinds of people react in a time of crisis, not only towards others but themselves. This film will have you scared, angry, sad, cheering, back to angry, back to sad. I love it! By the end of the film, you're emotions have been kicked around like a small dog, you won't know how to feel. A definite must own, you'll want to see it more than once. I highly recommend it!
What's great about it: The storyline and character depth, great ending!

This is probably one of the greatest action sets of all time! All of the films are digitally remastered in widescreen, and for a great price too! What else do you want me to say, it's Dirty Harry!!! This is Clint Eastwood at his best! Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of his and he's still pumping out great movies (acting and directing.) But, this is what he will always be remembered for. Buy it! I highly recommend it!

This is a fantastic horror movie. Stephen King is back! I say that because after Kingdom Hospital, I was scared that maybe his best days were behind him. (If you haven't seen Kingdom Hospital, it's the most boring, drawn out, waste of 10 hours! It's not scary at all! In fact, it's more like a really confusing comedy. It's a horror version of Scrubs.) But, after 1408 and The Mist, I'm confident in The King once again. In fact, this reminds me of the Stephen King of old, before all of the made-for-TV mini series movies. This is an amazing suspenseful thriller, and John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson were terrific. My wife and I loved this film! I highly recommend it! And if you haven't seen The Mist by now, you should. The King is back!!!
Mysterious supernatural occurrences plague a labyrinthine hospital in Columbia TriStar's release of horror icon Stephen King's made-for-television adaptation of Lars von Trier's The Kingdom. Kingdom Hospital is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and features audio rendered in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1. When you're finished being spooked by the horrific hospital, check out a commentary track by King and the filmmakers, journey "Inside the Walls" to see the making of the miniseries, hear what the cast has to say about the production in "Patients and Doctors," take a tour of the hospital in "Designing Kingdom Hospital," and read an exclusive essay written by King himself.

This was not at all what I expected. My wife and I watched this and were really confused. The reason why is that, we thought this was a horror, it's NOT. If you're expecting a horror, forget it. If you watch it as a comedy, you'll probably like it better. There's a lot of singing and dancing randomly, that doesn't make sense. The plot skips around too much, and every time you think you're going to finally see a scary scene, something funny will happen. To be honest, my wife and I are huge Stephen King fans. We have most of his films and books, can't get enough. But I don't know what happened here. Plus, it's way too long! This could've been cut down to a 3 hour mini series. It just seems like it drags on and on and on... It's not the kind of series, where you get all into it, and want to put in one episode after another. We would watch a couple and get bored, and put in something else. As much as it hurts me to say no to something by Stephen King, I'm going to have to on this. If you want to see it, wait for it to drop in price to about $10 - $15. Or just buy the first season by itself, and decide if you like it enough to watch the rest, which is like 10 hours!
What's great about it: Stephen King.
What's not so great: Way too long, very slow paced.

This was a great action/ sci-fi movie. It had a great plot, great special effects, and Hayden Christiansen and Samuel L. Jackson were terrific. There's even a cameo by Diane Lane. My only complaint (and the reason I didn't give it five stars), is because of the way it ended. There were a lot of unanswered questions and it was very open ended. By that, I mean there's obviously going to be a sequel. If there isn't, I will be very disappointed! But, it's still a lot of fun to watch. I highly recommend it!
What's great about it: The plot, the acting, the special effects, everything!
What's not so great: Open ended, too many unanswered questions.

I bought this movie for two reasons. First, I'm huge UFC fan, so I got it just to see Randy Couture. And yes, it was cool to see him in an action movie. And no, his not a good actor. Second, I liked all the other films in the Mummy series, including The Scorpion King. This one does't compare, at all! The special effects are terrible. This is more like a Sci-Fi flick. One thing I'll give it, they did a good job picking a guy to look like the Rock, too bad he's not a good actor. In fact, the acting all around was terrible. There are a few good fight scenes though, that's about it. So, if you liked the other Mummy films and you're wanting to see it for Randy Couture (as I was), then I recommend watching it, once. By that I mean rent it, don't buy it! Or just wait for it to come on the Sci-Fi Channel.
What's great about it: Randy Couture, (he give's it an extra star.)
What's not so great: The acting and special effects were horrible.
Director Clive Barker brings terror to the screen with Lord Of Illusions, an adaptation of one of his most popular stories. Starring Scott Bakula and Famke Janssen, Lord of Illusions features a very nice 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. With colors and black levels even and bright, MGM has done a fantastic job on this horror release for fans of the film. Only a small amount of edge enhancement is spotted, though it is very limited and should not interfere with the enjoyment of the film. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and uses a wide range of directional effects (mostly during the last half of the film). All aspects of this track, including dialogue, effects, and music, are well mixed and even. Also included on this disc are English and French subtitles. Lord of Illusions offers up more than the usual array of extra features for an MGM horror movie, including an insightful and fun commentary track by director/writer/co-producer Clive Barker. Also included on this disc are some deleted scenes from the film that should thrill fans, an isolated audio track of composer Simon Boswell's creepy music score, some notes on the making of the movie, as well as an original anamorphic widescreen theatrical trailer for Lord Of Illusions. Taken as a whole, this disc should provide viewers with hours of terrifying entertainment.

This is a fantastic horror/ psychological thriller. My wife and I love this movie! Written for the screen and directed by Clive Barker. First of all, I'm a huge Clive Barker fan, from his books, to his films, to his art work, love it all. And if you're a fan of HeIIraiser, Nightbreed, Candyman or his latest Midnight Meat Train, you'll love this movie. It's about the darker side of magic. The difference between being a real magician and being an illusionist. (Some people don't know there's a difference.) Great plot with a great cast, and great special effects. All around a great movie, keeps you thinking. I highly recommend it! Also, if you're a Clive Barker fan like myself, there are two movies in the Masters of Horror collection based off of two of his short stories, Valerie on the Stairs and Haeckel's Tale. Both are very good!
