Great remake!

My wife and I liked this movie! It wasn't as good as some of the other remakes, mostly because of the cast, but still good. I love all the remakes of old classic horror films. But, I know some people are old school and stuck in thier ways and think they should be left alone. Don't get me wrong, I still love the old ones. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have the new ones. The reason I like the recent horror remakes, (Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, etc.), is because we have better special effects now, better cinematography, better acting (except this one), and more money to put into the film. Plus, with some of them we've been able to elaborate the storyline a bit more, like with Halloween and this one. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is for the acting and the cast all around, other than Jason. The cast was very fake and unrealistic. They look like they picked them out of an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog. I know, they're all suppose to be a bunch of immature college kids out partying in the woods before they get killed. But, they went a little overboard in my opinion. I didn't recognize any of the cast members, then again, I don't watch teenie-bopper shows like the OC. I did, however, like the guy that played Jason, he was reminiscent of Kane Hodder. All around though, this film was fun to watch and a great remake. I recommend this to anyone who's a fan of classic slasher films!
What's great about it: Jason!
What's not so great: The actors and actresses were bad, (except Jason.)

Excellent prequel!!!

My wife and I love these movies. At first, watching the trailer, I thought that Rhona Mitra was replacing Kate Beckensale (because they look a like). Boy was I wrong! I'm not going to spoil it, but Rhona Mitra does a great job and Kate Beckensale is in the movie. This is probably one of the best trilogies I've ever seen! This one literally takes you to the opening scene of the first one. I'm not saying another word, because I'm trying not to spoil it for you. Just get it! Trust me! I highly recommend! And, if you haven't seen the first two, watch this one first, then the other two. This is the perfect prequel!
What's great about it: Ties in perfectly with the first two!
What's not so great: Couldn't find anything.

My wife and I love these films! Even though all three are equally as good, this one's my personal favorite. I like the villain, Marcus, he's like a giant vampire bat. This one picks up right where the first one left off. It's just as intense as the other two. It has great special effects, great imagery, and a great storyline. I highly recommend it! Also, if you haven't seen the third one yet, Rise of the Lycans, you should.
What's great about it: The plot, the acting, the special effects, everything!
What's not so great: Couldn't find anything.

Excellent psychological thriller!!!

My wife and I love this movie! Christian Bale is one of our favorite actors. I love his role in this. He's demented yet humorous. I'm glad he got this role over Leonardo Di Caprio, Bale fits it better. Plus, I love a movie surrounded by controversy. The book this film was based on actually inspired a real killing spree from serial killer Paul Bernardo. This was a twisted and disturbing movie with some dark humor. I love it! I highly recommend it! Also, another great psychological thriller with Christian Bale is The Machinist.
What's great about it: Christian Bale, best actor!
What's not so great: Nothing!

A dark and melancholy mystery-thriller that unfortunately failed to reach a wide audience during its all-too-brief theatrical release, director Brad Anderson's The Machinist should find solid life on home video thanks in part to this impressive release from Paramount Home Video. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, cinematographer Xavi Giménez's moody, nearly monochromatic compositions make for a truly unsettling viewing experience thanks to a beautiful transfer that boasts dark-as-night blacks and shows no evidence of digital artifacting. The sound design of The Machinist is a key component of the film's ability to get under the viewer's skin, and the English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix offers impressive surround effects throughout. An English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround mix and English subtitles are also available. In terms of bonus materials, Anderson's easygoing commentary offers notable insight into the dark journey of haunted protagonist Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) while also playing up the film's dark humor. Though frequent references to Alfred Hitchcock get somewhat tiresome after a seemingly endless barrage of "H-bombs" are dropped by the hero-worshipping director, Anderson also offers insight into some of the more subtle influences on the film (including Dostoyevsky and German expressionism). Genre specialist Nacho Cerdá's impressive featurette "The Machinist: Breaking the Rules" does indeed break the rules of typical, by-the-numbers making-of segments by offering considerable insight into the production and presenting the material in a refreshingly artistic light, and a collection of deleted and alternate scenes will no doubt prove intriguing to fans of the film despite their ultimate disposability. A theatrical trailer rounds out the special features, making this release a true winner for fans of The Machinist and an ideal introduction to the winning sleeper for the uninitiated.

This is one of my wife and I's favorite movies, and Christian Bale is one of our favorite actors. He should have won an award for his role in this. He had to lose some 50 to 75 lbs. for this role, he weighed like 135 to 145 lbs., give or take. No one, other than Robert De Niro in Raging Bull, has under gone such a drastic weight change. Plus, a lot of people don't know this, but he had to turn around and beef up to 220 lbs. for Batman Begins. I think he's one of the best actors of this generation. As far as the film, this is a great psychological thriller that will keep you guessing right to the end. I highly recommend it! Also, another great psychological thriller with Christian Bale is American Psycho.

Don't waste your money!

I wrote a previous review under the DVD giving the film 3 stars, because I thought it had potential and I thought the second one would be better (New Moon). Also, I recently watched Blood and Chocolate, which was terrible. But, I think I understand now. These movies are for kids, they both should be rated PG and should've been done by Disney. These are vampire and werewolf films for children and young teens. This is the reason for me reducing my previous rating, they're misleading. These films should've been advertised as family or kids movies. Plus, the new film New Moon is really just these two films put together. If you're looking for something to sit and watch with your kids, I'd say yes. But, to any adult looking for a serious film, I DON'T recommend this!
What's great about it: Good kids movie.
What's not so great: The acting, make-up and special effects were terrible.

Terrible!

This movie was terrible, it was almost as bad as Twilight. This film I think was designed for kids and young teens, (just like Twilight). In fact, it could pass for PG. I haven't read the book, but I know people that have. They said the book was much better, (just like Twilight.) There's a few good actors in it, and the plot had potential but was poorly done. The special effects were horrible. The werewolves weren't even werewolves. They just show a computer generated change, then an actual wolf. Weak! This is quite possibly the worst attempt at a werewolf I've ever seen, it's like they didn't even try! If you're looking for something to sit and watch with your kids, I'd recommend it, (just like Twilight). To everyone else, I DON'T recommend this boring kids movie.
What's great about it: A few good actors.
What's not so great: Everything else.

Great horror movie!

This was a great slasher film, my wife and I loved it! What makes it that much better is that it's based on true events. That always makes a horror film more intriguing, in my opinion. This film had good intensity and kept you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it! Also, if you like horror films based on true events, you might want to check out Monster, Wolf Creek, Broken, Slaughter (from the Afterdark Horrorfest III), and Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door (not the comedy).
What's great about it: It's based on true events.
What's not so great: Couldn't find anything.

Relentless!!!

This is one of the best vampire films I've ever seen! My wife and I are huge horror buffs, especially in the vampire genre. It has been a while since a good vampire flick has come along. There is of course Van Helsing, the Blade series, and The Underworld series, which are great in thier own right, but those are more action films than they are horror. Not since the late 80s to the mid 90s has there been a good vampire movie, (Lost Boys, Fright Night, Near Dark, Interview With a Vampire, and Bram Stoker's Dracula). There's been a lot of failures also, (Dracula 2000 and 3000, Wes Craven's Dracula series, and the more recent Twilight). So, we were due for one, and this one delivers. It's very intense, has a great plot, and a great cast. This film was actually based on a graphic novel that's a 3 part series, so maybe we'll get another one. My wife and I love this movie, I highly recommend it! Also, two other more recent vampire films that were pretty good are Bled and Rise: Blood Hunter.
What's great about it: Fast paced and intense!
What's not so great: Couldn't find anything.

Disney's "Vista Series" DVDs were touted as the next big line of Special Edition discs, and titles such as Pearl Harbor and The Sixth Sense reflected that, so what's the deal with this release of Signs? Though certainly not a horrible disc, it falls short in many ways. The image, which is 1.85:1 and anamorphic, is good, but flawed. Grainy shimmering shows all to often, especially early in the film. Darks are solid though, with no sign of breakdown or blocking. Color, though relatively muted in the film, comes across pretty well. The 5.1 Dolby Digital EX track suffers also. For such a blockbuster, so much more would be expected. While dialogue is clear, nearly the entire track is focused up front, with little separation. Surrounds are only used sparingly at best and lack any real imagination. Where the disc really falters is the supplemental features. Not that what's offered isn't good, but for a Special Edition series, there just simply isn't much. The highlight is a very comprehensive 58-minute documentary on all aspects of making the film. Director M. Night Shyamalan extensively discusses everything from pre-production, to set design and visual effects, to the scoring of the film and it's world premiere. Interviews with composer James Newton Howard, producer Frank Marshall, and others flesh out the process of making this film. A real treat on this disc because it's so bad (and Shyamalan admits it himself in an introduction) is the inclusion of a minute from his first "creature" movie, Pictures, which he made as a teenager. It's simply awful, making it very funny. Rounding out this disc are five deleted scenes running about eight minutes and a storyboard-to-film comparison with angle function and multiple audio options. Again, what is offered for extras is good, they just don't reach far enough.

As with most M. Night Shyamalan films, you love it or dispise it, you're either a fan of his or you're not. Most people that diss his films just don't understand him or his movies. My wife and I are huge fans, we have all of his films. This is a great movie with two storylines that come together at the end, geniusly written with a great cast. If you're not a fan of his or don't understand his movies, then don't bother. But, if you're a fan, as we are, then I highly recommend this movie. It's right up there with Unbreakable and Sixth Sense. Also, some of his more recently underappreciated movies are Lady in the Water and The Happening. Only if you're a fan, will you appreciate these movies!
What's great about it: Very intriguing with a great twist at the end.
What's not so great: Underappreciated!
