This was a great film, my wife and I loved it! This movie will keep you guessing til the end. Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor were fantastic. I highly recommend it! This movie was reminiscent of The Talented Mr. Ripley and Ripley's Game.
What's great about it: Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor.
What's not so great: Couldn't find anything.

Tom Cruise stars in director Cameron Crowe's complex thriller Vanilla Sky. Presented in a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Paramount's work on this picture is stunningly good. With dark black levels and solid colors, this transfer includes nary a hint of edge enhancement, grain, or any other imperfection that might otherwise mar the image. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and French. The 5.1 mix is very aggressive and full, utilizing rear and front surrounds generously (especially with the use of modern rock songs in the background). Also included on this disc are English subtitles. The extra features for Vanilla Sky are plentiful and exciting, starting with a commentary track by Crowe and his wife, composer Nancy Wilson of the rock group Heart. Both participants are very chatty and even get a chance to do a brief interview with Cruise. Two featurettes, "Prelude to a Dream" and "Hitting It Hard," each include interviews with the cast and crew as well as some extensive behind-the-scenes footage from the film and the overseas premiere. Finally, there is also a brief interview with Paul McCartney, a music video by Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa, an unreleased teaser trailer, a theatrical trailer, and a photo gallery with an introduction by photographer Neal Preston.

This movie was great, my wife and I loved it! We can't figure out why so many people dissed it. We've seen Open Your Eyes, the one everybody says is better, and we didn't like it. The acting, cinamatography, and over all storyline was much better in Vanilla Sky. If you haven't seen either one, just watch this one. Don't waste your time with Open Your Eyes. This film is very intriguing and thought provoking. In fact, my wife and I had to watch it twice to fully understand everything. Fantastic movie, I highly recommend it! Also, some other similar films that make you think are 12 Monkeys, The Jacket, and Lost Highway.
What's great about it: Better than the Spanish version, Open Your Eyes.
What's not so great: Unappreciated!

The 2-Disc Collector's Edition of Paul Thomas Anderson's brilliant There Will Be Blood, the first of 2007's Best Picture nominees to receive the multiple DVD treatment, offers a superb transfer, a fact that should come as no surprise to those aware of Anderson's admiration for DVD. Although some may quibble with there being only eight chapter stops for a 160-minute film, the truth is that each of the eight has been perfectly chosen and titled, so viewers can find what they need easily. The most interesting of the extras on the bonus disc is "The Story of Petroleum," a silent movie from the 1920s made to educate the public about various aspects of the oil industry. Jonny Greenwood, whose musical compositions contributed greatly to the overall effect of Anderson's film, created a wholly new soundtrack for this nearly 100-year-old short. Another portion of the bonus disc showcases old movies, drawings, and still pictures from the time period juxtaposed with scenes from the film. This section illuminates the level of research done by the filmmakers. The collector's edition also includes the original theatrical trailer, as well as the absolutely brilliant teaser trailer. There are a smattering of deleted scenes, the longest being the "fishing sequence," wherein the audience sees Daniel Plainview and his crew attempt to recover materials lost down the well during drilling. Those who care about the remarkable craft and intelligence that went into this amazing film will find the two-disc edition as fascinating as the movie itself.

Very bizarre film!

This movie was hilarious, my wife and I thought it was great! We were under the impression this was an action/ drama, but we realized about 30 min. in, that it was a comedy. It did drag on a bit, they could've made it a little shorter. The music in this film was very strange and didn't really fit any of the scenes. The movie was filled with odd characters and bizarre events. Like I said, I think this was more of a comedy, my wife and I were in tears from laughter by the end of the film. The final scene is the best part of the movie, hilarious! I recommend this film, but as a comedy, not a drama! Also, if you like this, you may want to check out Ravenous.
What's great about it: Daniel Day-Lewis, and the film was hilarious!
What's not so great: Very weird music and strange characters.

My wife and I just watched this film, and we both liked it. However, my wife liked it a little more than me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. I just thought that the plot was rather dull, predictable, and drawn out. It's more of a romantic comedy, not the epic action adventure film that was advertised. Where as I'm a fan of epic movies, this could've been shortened a little. The plot was just Far and Away in Australia, almost identical. Hugh Jackman is great, as usual, and Nicole Kidman, with her collagen inhanced lips, plays her usual stuck-up snobby role. The cinamatography is fantastic though, beautiful imagery reminiscent of the old school Hollywood films. (The main reason for the 4 star rating, otherwise, I probably would've given it 3 stars.) Also, my wife and I have seen numerous films with Australian actors and know a lot people that are from Australia, but we couldn't understand a word that the little boy was saying. Plus, another thing we didn't understand was the bizarre opening statement about hearing voices of deceased natives?! Are we suppose to be listening for EVPs, or what? I don't know. Personally, this film was not as good as other films like Far and Away or The Painted Veil, but still worth watching, mostly for the imagery. Although, I'd wait for it to drop in price to about $9.99 or less, it's not really a $20 movie.
What's great about it: Hugh Jackman and the cinamatography.
What's not so great: It was rather slow and drawn out, plot was dull and predictable.

The first DVD for Memento, released shortly after its theatrical run, was a decent disc with fine picture and sound, but somewhat weak on special features. For its second release on DVD, Columbia TriStar has made amends for those omissions. First, though, the image is flawless. The anamorphic 1.85:1 picture, even for a relatively low-budget film, is impeccable with solid blacks and colors that are vivid. The black-and-white segments are also perfectly realized, retaining the grainy look of the theatrical presentation. Equally strong is the sound, in both Dolby Digital and DTS formats, with just the right use of the surround speakers, and clear representation in the front. Dialogue and effects are distinct and show no signs of distortion. As mentioned, the supplemental features on this disc are plentiful, but it's a double-edged sword. This two-disc set includes a new commentary track on the first disc from director Christopher Nolan, but the second disc stores the majority of the extras, including production sketches and photographs, trailers, a featurette, the script, poster art, and the original story Memento Mori. Also included are a number of unadvertised features such as bootleg cover art, a props gallery, concept art, and most importantly, a chronologically ordered version of the film. All of that is undeniably impressive, and while the programmers for this disc have done everything they can to be creative, accessing these extra features is thoroughly annoying. The menus, which comprise of intricate puzzles, are so complicated that the majority of viewers might just find themselves watching the movie and ignoring all of the fascinating special features. In addition, the packaging, while unique, is not ideal, with the disc housed in a paper cover, and rather difficult to remove. Even with its flaws, this is a mighty impressive re-release.

This is a great movie, my wife and I love it! This movie is very original and thought provoking. You're actually watching the film in reverse, because the main character (Guy Pearce) has short term memory loss. Every morning when he gets up, he does remember the day before. This is a great movie and Guy Pearce is fantastic. I highly recommend it! Also, some other good films with Guy Pearce are Ravenous and Time Machine.

The past is history in the time-bending action remake The Time Machine. Dreamworks has done a very nice job at making sure this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is as close to reference quality as they come. With an array of well-saturated black levels and sharp, crisp, colors, this is a very solid transfer that should please fans. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in French and English, DTS Surround in English, and Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and Spanish. Both the DTS and Dolby 5.1 mix are very bombastic and striking with directional effects utilized during almost every scene. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are free of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. There seems to be a century's worth of extra features on this disc, starting with a commentary track by director Simon Wells (who is also writer H.G. Wells great-grandson). This is a very light track that features sports many stories about the film's troubled production and history. Three making-of vignettes take the viewer behind-the-scenes for a look at how some of the special effects were created ("Creating the Morlocks," "Building the Time Machine," and "Visual Effects by Digital Domain"). An HBO "First Look" is also included which features clips from the film and interviews with the cast and crew. A single deleted scene allows the viewer to catch a very brief glimpse at what was left on the cutting room floor. Finally, there is a short sequence on the fighting in the film, a section of archives which includes nearly 100 images of the conceptual art, some paltry production notes, filmographies, and trailers for the film.

This is a fantastic remake, my wife and I love it! This film was directed by Simon Wells, H.G. Wells great-grandson, so you know it's going to be good. This is one of Guy Pearce's best roles. This single-layered DVD version of the film includes two viewing options, one on each side of the disc: widescreen anamorphic (in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio) and full-screen standard (1.33:1). Audio options are limited to English Dolby Digital 5.1 with English, Spanish, and French subtitles (closed-captioning also included). Production notes are the only special or bonus features included in this edition of the film. Picture quality is exquisite, high-resolution and sharply detailed and delineated, with excellent contrast and natural coloring. Sound quality is also excellent, with a wide range of resonance and excellent sound effects, tracking, dialogue quality, and fidelity, especially to the musical score. The DVD case's cardboard cover includes a chapter index.

One of Clint Eastwood's best, my wife and I love it! This is a great conspiracy film. It keeps you on the edge of your seat til the very end. I highly recommend it! Also, some other good Clint Eastwood films are Gran Torino, In the Line of Fire, and A Perfect World.

Make way for the next generation of 007!!!

My wife and I love the new Bond films! This one literally picks up where Casino Royale left off. I know there are those old school Bond geeks that don't like the new Bond and are stuck on the old ones, but I personally think Craig is the best yet! The new Bond films and Daniel Craig have brought on a new era of 007. Don't get me wrong, I still love and respect the old Bond movies I grew up watching as a kid. It's just that the new Bond is more intense and more realistic. Yes, it was cool to watch the old Bonds get shot at and go through explosions, only to pop up without a scratch and straighten thier ties. I like Craig's Bond because when the bullets start flying and the hand-to-hand combat ensues, he's not afraid to get his hands dirty, get banged up, or lose the suit if necessary. He's the roughneck Bond, not the pretty boy Bond. I personally have been taking martial arts all my life, was an amatuer cage fighter at one point in my early to mid 20s, and spent about 8 years in security jobs in which I had to wear a suit. It is almost impossible to be in a full on brawl or engage in hand-to-hand combat with someone and not get a scratch or tear in your suit. In fact, if it got nasty, we would come out of our jackets and wore clip on ties so we could yank them off and couldn't be choked with them. Like I said, this Bond is more realistic than the past Bonds. Not to mention, the new Bond films are much more fast paced, action packed, and intense from the opening scene to the last. I don't think there was a single scene longer than 5 min. in this film without action! I highly recommend this film and Casino Royale!
What's great about it: Daniel Craig- Best James Bond!!!
What's not so great: Thought the special edition would have a digital copy.

My wife and I love this movie! I know there are some Bond geeks out there that may disapprove of the new Bond films, and will stick to thier guns saying that no one will ever be as good as Connery, Moore, or even Brosnan. But, the new Bond film and Daniel Craig have started a new era of 007. Don't get me wrong, I still love and respect the old Bond films I grew up watching as a kid. It's just that the new Bond is more intense and more realistic. Yes, it was cool watching the old Bonds get shot at and go through explosions only to come up without a scratch and straighten thier ties. I like Craig's Bond because he can be sleek and sharp when he needs to be, but when the bullets start flying and the hand-to-hand combat ensues, he's not afraid to get in there and get his hands dirty or lose the suit if necessary. He's the roughneck Bond, not the pretty boy Bond. And for that, I have more respect for him as the new Bond. Not to mention, the new films are much more fast paced, action packed, and intense from the very first scene to the very last. I highly recommend this film and the new one, Quantum of Solace!

Fox goes all out on a film that didn't get the audience it deserved, and produces a DVD that really stands out. Director Mark Romanek's visual style, a key element of the film, is perfectly translated to this disc. At 1.85:1 and anamorphic (there is a full-frame version also available), colors are either a bit over-saturated, making them stand out, or highly realistic and warm. In either case, they simply look marvelous. The 5.1 Dolby Digital track is also quite good, though centered more up front. Though the basses are very evident at time, the surrounds aren't utilized as effectively, which is often the case with lower-budgeted films. Making this fine disc even better is the number of supplements. When a studio fluff piece is the worst element, it's a sure sign that things are good, and they are here. Beyond that featurette is a screen-specific audio commentary provided by Romanek and star Robin Williams. It's low key, even with Williams involved, but engaging as both have plenty to discuss. A real plus is a portion of The Charlie Rose Show featuring Romanek and Williams. Williams is in his public persona -- total mania, in all directions. It's a very entertaining conversation between the three. Due to it's "independent" basis, the inclusion of a Sundance Channel Anatomy of a Scene is not a surprise, and certainly welcome. This half-hour special takes an in depth look at one particular scene, with cast and crew interviews. Finally, along with the film's theatrical trailer and three televisions spots, is a trailer for John Malkovich's The Dancer Upstairs. This is a total package that only makes a fine movie even better.

This was a good movie, my wife and I liked it. Robin Williams really makes the movie. It has a good plot, and I probably would have given it a higher rating had it not been so slow and drawn out. Robin Williams proves once again that he's a terrific actor in roles other than comedies. I recommend this movie, just don't expect a fast paced thriller. However, I can recommend a great fast paced thriller with Robin Williams and Al Pacino, Insomnia, which is a must see!
What's great about it: Robin Williams and the imagery.
What's not so great: Rather slow.
