Dual-Band router with room to grow!
on October 21, 2016
Posted by: banjo
At first this router may seem a little pricey and a little bit of overkill for household use, but when I sorted out the 3 phones, 2 tablets, 2 TVs, 3 desktops, laptop, and home server for backups and streaming videos – more bandwidth that is reliably available not matter who is using what seems like a good investment after all. This router allows me to satisfy current bandwidth needs with plenty of room for whatever comes next.
INSTALLATION was easy and pretty much automatic, although with my internet provider I have to clone the mac address of my desktop to the router to get the internet connection. This really doesn’t show up in the instructions from either the router manual or my internet provider, but a quick Google took care of that (I forgot about having to do that with previous routers). Once that was done, everything else connected to the internet without any problems. SIGNAL STRENGTH is definitely dramatically improved and I can go outside the house and walk around without losing much in the way of performance. Of course I would expect this from the ‘beamforming’ feature, and it seems to be working as advertised. For BANDWIDTH, during our peak usage times with wife playing on her tablet and watching TV, son gaming online, home server streaming videos to me, and everyone’s phone up and running, there is no drop in data or signal and as the family’s technical consultant I am happy that I don’t get the “Honey/Dad, is the internet working?” calls from the rest of the family when they can’t get a web page to load or the TV show starts to stutter. OPEN SOURCE capability is something I have used with previous routers to get increased performance or specialized functions, and although the Linksys has everything I need at the moment, being able to customize if the need arises has been a real benefit with previous routers.
As another installation note, if you are installing on an existing home network, check the Linksys factory installed IP address (192.168.1.1) and the Linksys starting IP address range of the router (>192.168.1.100) as you might need to reset the router IP to 192.168.0.1 and the starting router IP address range to 192.168.0.X to allow your existing static IP devices to connect. For example, my home server had a static IP address of 192.168.0.6 and would not connect to the Linksys router (factory settings) until I changed the settings on the router. Easy to do, and very much easier to change the router settings using the browser management console that to go and change settings on the existing server and everything else with a static IP.
All the technical stuff aside, the “Network Map” feature on the browser console shows how many devices are connected to both the main and ‘guest’ network – which is not earth-shaking but a nice feature that is new to me. I doubt I will make much use of the android app management tools, but they are there if I need them and might come in handy in the future.
This is one of those “has all the new stuff” devices that probably has some features I will never use, but I have said the same thing about many other technology purchases that turned out to be obsolete or “behind the times” in just a year or two. I don’t expect to have the same problem with this device, and if I am going to invest in something that is “more than I need” at the moment, I believe the heart of my wireless system would be the best place to start.
Bottom line for me is that: 1 – it works; 2 – it was easy to set up; 3 – everyone gets the bandwidth they need when they need it; 4 – it won’t need to be replaced any time soon. Win-win-win-win. At the end of the day and into the weekend, I value my leisure time and want to enjoy the internet without having to fiddle with the router or find some new settings that bump up the bandwidth. Having that quality leisure time is more than enough compensation for buying a top-notch router that will keep pumping out the bandwidth as needed now, and in the future.

Great for older geeks who don't need the "sizzle"

Actually the "top of the line" G910 gaming keyboard was marked down to a lower price when I got this, but too much "gamer" stuff on the G910 and not for an 'older professional' who wants to appear more mature than his 13-year-old gaming son. IMO the G910 wasn't selling as well as hoped, and the G810 is (to me) the superior model in design, appearance, and performance.
This G810 looks professional on the desk, has OUTSTANDING color display (note that the 'special' keys on the number keys are also illuminated -- missing on many of the other illuminated keyboards - aren't these ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) the ones you can never remember when typing in the dark?), no "bottom of the keys" light spillover that takes away from the illumination focus, superior engineering on the Romer-G switches (Check out the tour of the Romer-G factory in Japan on YouTube), and feels like a BRICK in the hand (a GOOD BRICK) with heavy-duty construction. The 3-way adjustable tilt and huge rubber feet on the bottom will keep this from sliding around on any desk, including glass-tops. The only thing that makes this look like a "gamer rig" is the FABULOUS and CRISP color displays... which are easy to see even with the lights on in the room > fully adjustable to get it just the way you want at home or at work. I may be an old-timer, but I don't mind showing off a little bit and this keyboard is an EYE-CATCHER when the lights start doing the 'wave' across the keyboard!
I read all the reviews and fiddled with the keyboards on display and there seem to be "Logitech Nay-Sayers" who can't bear the idea of using anything other than the older design "cherry" keys. I have gone from manual touch-typing > to I B M Selectric > to I B M 'clicky' keyboard (still one of my favorites) > to membranes > to whatever-cheapo-keyboard Dell includes in their educational computers > to a Saitek PK17U Cyborg > to this keyboard. This one is the best by FAR! Re: keys... you get a little 'click' so the sound and some tactile/touch reinforcement for keyboarding (typing) is there, but not too loud and for me just enough to let me know I hit the key. Yes it feels different from the cheapo Dell keyboard i just unplugged and replaced, but every keyboard is different and this one feels like driving a luxury car!
Speaking of my son, he is now looking over at my new keyboard and looking at his illuminated keyboard and I think I know what he will be asking for come Christmas. Fortunately, the box still had the promotion of free download and activation code for "The Division" so the kid has something to keep him busy until Santa Claus comes.
If you are an old crab like me, but like a little 'sizzle' when using your computer and want to treat yourself to a smooth-as-silk keyboard... this is the one I would recommend. Leave the "whoopee" keyboards to the kids.
PS - you can hit a quick button on the keyboard and turn off the light display if you want to turn off the light show for a while.

Stylish & Functional

Got ZENWatch2 as upgrade from ZENWatch1 when microphone stopped working. Longer battery life and less bulky watchband are a plus. Basic functions are about the same but hey the ZW1 was $200 and the ZW2 is $150... what's not to like? I like the style for an older 'gentleman' as opposed to the 'sports watch' look of other brands. Not looking for a watch that 'does it all' just a nice watch that notifies me of incoming emails, tweets, facebook, phone calls, and text messages. Voice recognition on the watch to reply to email/messaging is a nice feature and pretty much spot on for proper recognition. ZW2 has a speaker, but not sure what to do with that just yet.... May I recommend the protection plan along with this device as I was in and out with courteous treatment on my original ZW1 purchase when the device started acting up. Best Buy exceeded my expectations on that transaction. No hassles.

Bad luck >> hopefully CCR warranty is bona fide

Sorry for the 1-star but this one was dead on arrival and if replacement is OK i would put it up to 4. Bought to replace an older S3 and wanted to keep case, xtended battery, accessories the same... so thought another S3 would fill the bill and at modest expense. Unfortunate the phone arrived and looked brand new, but would not work at all. Contacted CCR warranty (BestBuy does not directly warranty this phone) and they have been quick to respond and helpful so far. Shipping phone back for replacement tomorrow so hope to have good news in a week or two. Always a hassle having to do it this way, but that happens sometimes when doing business online. Will report back on CCR warranty situation when it is resolved. Hope for good results.

Best choice for price vs. performance

looked at the Moto + Pebble (tried one) + Asus... Moto battery life was a deal-breaker plus Moto appearance too "young" for an old geezer like me. i really wanted to like the Pebble/Steel due to appearance + battery life + full text notifications but kept pulling hairs off my arm trying to work the buttons and just didn't have the "wow" factor i like on a technology purchase - going from touchscreen to pushbutton just didn't feel right after using it for a day. ZenWatch won the day with good battery life + "sizzle" with color screen + price + conservative (very nice) appearance. setting up the android wear takes a learning curve but that's OK considering how new the smartwatch system is at the moment. overall a good purchase and will hold me over for a couple years until the market and hardware has a chance to go through a couple of iterations.

Update @ Christmas 2016
December 21, 2016
Mentioned that my son was keeping an eye on my G810 from the get-go... first time I let him 'test drive' my G810 he says "ooooh, that feels nice" and decided he wanted to go to mechanical keyboard. He has a 'gamer' RBD keyboard (non-mechanical) with extra bells and whistles he has been using for a year or two, but instantly fell in love with the mechanical feel. Just gave him a "Week before Christmas" present of his own G810. He had his pick of the models available, and after tapping some keys and looking at the different models chose to get the G810. Just goes to show the "fancy schmancy" keyboards might look more-cooler-better but the proof is in the feel of the keys. It's a keyboard, after all.

Meet the unrivaled, everyday noise canceling headphone for people who want to keep it simple. Hesh ANC is engineered with just the right amount of added features to make your life a little easier without a lot of additional technology that you might not need.

Does the headphone have a mic built into the headset where you can make phone calls?

yes there are actually 4 built-in microphones for the "ambient" function and for phone calls. i was using a "boom mic" gaming headset for my virtual meetings and phone calls, and when switching back and forth during a phone call and a meeting to check out the difference, the people in the meeting and on the phone call said they could not tell much difference between "boom mic" gaming headset and the Skullcandy headset. considering the comfort and battery life of the Skullcandy headset (see my review) i prefer the Skullcandy to the gaming headset, and also don't have to "switch" to earbuds when going back and forth from virtual meetings and classes and making or receiving phone calls. the Skullcandy headset works very nicely for all things all day long.

Pair Surface Go Type Cover with Surface Go* for a full keyboard experience anywhere. Ultra-compact, yet it includes a complete mechanical keyset, backlit keys, and extra-large trackpad. Plus, three colors are covered in rich Alcantara material¹ for an added touch of luxury and comfort.

What is the power source for the Microsoft Surface Go type cover?

the keyboards do not have a built-in battery that needs to be charged separately. the keyboard draws power (for the BACKLIGHTING - very nice!) from the computer battery when it is "popped" on. Nothing to worry about like forgetting to charge your keyboard, or losing the Bluetooth connection - it is all direct connection for power and signal. The Microsoft Surface keyboard seems to be something that everyone agrees is well designed and "one of the best" out there for a detachable keyboard/trackpad. Hope this helps and Stay Safe!

Do yoou have to use an app on your phone to install it?

phone app, tablet app or computer app - one or the other is needed to set up the printer. there is no "touch screen" display like other models, so you will need phone, laptop, desktop, chromebook, tablet.... anything will do as long as it connects to your home network (or the same network as the printer).

HP OMEN Obelisk by HP Desktop: Play graphically intense games with this HP OMEN Obelisk desktop computer. You can easily store large amounts of media and other data on the 1TB hard drive and install games and programs on the 256GB SSD for fast access. This HP OMEN Obelisk desktop computer has 16GB of memory for multitasking effectively, and the Intel Core i7-9700 processor handles resource-intense programs efficiently.

Is the storage (and other features, I suppose) upgradeable? If I wanted to install higher storage (a 2TB HDD or a 500g SSD, for example) is that doable? If so, is it easily doable?

very easy to swap or add hard drives - the solid panel pops right off and there are two drive bays ready to go. i did what you are asking about by pulling the 1TB drive that came with the system out, and replacing with a 2TB drive that already had my game files on it (steam stuff - you know what i mean) and adding a 1TB SSD in the second bay. Transferred the system settings from the "old" computer to this new one using TransWiz to migrate the windows 10 user profiles from the old machine and this freed up the 1TB SSD from the "old" machine to be used for game files on the Obelisk.

Are both side panels removable? I know the windowed one will come off, but is the other side detach as well? Thanks in advance for your answers!

yes both side pop off very easily. the clear side panel for access to the motherboard, the solid side panel gives you access to the quick-change slots for 2 hard drives. I swapped out the provided hard drive with one that already had game files on it, and the popped in a SSD in the blank bay. just use the rails to mount the hard drives and leave the little tiny screws in the tool box. easy peasy!

Is the model of this phone 1660 or 1778? I know this question was asked, but not answered. I know they were having trouble with the audio in these two models.

i got 10+ couple days ago and it says model I3223. software is most current 53.0.A.4.79 so no update needed as i have heard about some Xperia 10 early shipments. from what i have heard some issues were from software that needed updating, and i have had no issues with audio, bluetooth, or other concerns.

i saw an ad at UK store that said "free case from SONY" that ships with the phone. i expect it will be hard to find a case (or screen protector) for this new phone. does anyone have an idea if the BestBuy package comes with "free case" ??

well i will answer my own question. got my 10+ and no 'free case' for US customers. box came with phone, charger, USB cable, and micro-documentation.
