Simple system for a better & HOTTER cup-o-coffee!
on July 18, 2017

from macon, ga
This is my first higher-level coffee brewer, having used the economy model “hot water drip” pot for years. I was expecting to have to go through a lot of fiddling and a challenging learning curve to deal with the more complex Ninja brewing process, but was pleasantly surprised that using the Ninja system is pretty much “1-2-3” buttons and everything else is taken care of by the Ninja. Watching the Ninja “walk through” video on YTube was helpful, and other than going through the quick start manual it is really a simple process to choose the preferred strength and amount. 1 – power on; 2 – choose the size from single cup to full carafe; 3 – choose the coffee strength; 4 – good to go! The Ninja preheats the water, wets down the grounds to infuse, and then starts to brew.
The water reservoir is easy to remove and fill at the sink – no more “pour and spill” water on the counter. This is one of the nicer features as you can fill up the reservoir and then brew a single cup (nice flip-down cup holder), travel mug, half carafe, or a full carafe. Permanent coffee filter pops right out and is easy to clean.
One of the nicest things about the Ninja is keeping the coffee nice and hot, from the first cup to the last cup after several hours. I had gotten used to having the first cup pretty hot and then having less heat from one cup to the next. The shape of the Ninja carafe (more at the bottom) and the improved warmer plate keep the coffee piping hot all the way to the last cup. The warmer plate can be set to turn off automatically from 1 to 4 hours after brewing. Another very nice feature is being able to brew just one cup or a larger sized travel mug with the Ninja automatically using the right amount of water from the reservoir. Just put the cup on the flip-down stand or travel mug on the warmer plate (doesn’t turn on unless you are using the carafe – nice touch!) and very convenient and a lot less fiddling around with the coffee pot to make a quick pick-me-up cup at lunch or after work. Of course you will have to refresh the coffee grounds, but the “prepackaged” one-cup systems really don’t make a very good cup of coffee anyway.
Wife has always preferred the “percolator” type pot, and that means 2 coffee pots on the counter. The hope was that the Ninja brewer would replace both pots and keep both of us happy, and it has worked out well so far! Pairing the Ninja with a bean grinder seems to be the right combination to satisfy the coffee tastes for the whole house. She has always said that the percolator makes the best coffee, but the Ninja seems to be changing her mind and is certainly a lot easier to use.
Overall, the Ninja makes brewing much easier, the coffee is hotter and tastes better – with a good range of choices to fine tune the brew to your personal taste, is simple to use, and can’t be beat for the “single cup” or “travel mug” choices. There are a lot of simple recipes that come along with the user’s manual and they sound pretty tasty, so will give a few of those a try over the holiday season to impress the dinner guests!

Good value with good sound for everyday use...

JLAB® - JBuds Pro Wireless In-Ear Headphones
These are a little different “collar” style earbuds, with the controls and battery in-line on the left side of the cord instead of in holder pods on each side like I am used to with other popular designs. Anything different takes a little getting used to, and once I got used to the controls it was OK. There is a little clip included to pin to your shirt or collar, but haven’t really needed that to get the headset to stay put. For more active use, like during a workout, the clip will be needed. The weight of the in-line control pod will pull the bud out of your right ear if you are really moving around, so the clip would help keep everything in place. If you are really moving around a lot, there are the “Cush Fins” that help hold the buds in your ears – they are easy to pop on and pop off when needed. I had to get used to the “extra weight” on the side with the in-line controls, and some users may find that to be a problem if working out or really moving around vigorously.
Pairing is easy, but when going from one device to another I have to turn the headset off and then restart to get the connection. This headset “remembers” the last device it was pared with and will automatically connect to that device, but when going from one device to another (like from phone to computer) you have to turn off the headset and turn it back on to connect to the different device.
Battery life is a few hours less than I get on “collar type” headset, probably because of a smaller sized battery due to the in-line controls design. No problems with 6-8 hours of listening, but not much longer than that. I don’t set my volume particularly high, which may help the battery last a bit longer than other reviews I have read. Charging is fast and only takes about an hour to get back to full charge.
Sound is good, and is the best I have gotten from several headsets that are in the $20 - $60 price range – including well-known collar-style earbuds that are twice the price. The JLAB earbuds are a good value. A more robust sound may also explain why the battery life is shorter than other (larger) collar-style earbuds – there may be some “boosting” that draws the battery a little faster.
Phone calls are OK and about the same as my other headsets. People can hear me just fine and I can hear them no problems.
For the price, this is a good set to use around the house, walking or jogging, or going out for the day. Don’t count on them lasting “forever” on one charge.

Meets requirements for good sound & portability!

Nyne - Rebel Portable Bluetooth Speaker
In researching this I found a lot of "better than this" and "not better than this" comparisons, but the best test is to listen for myself and form my own opinion. I got this to use around my school (teacher) to provide some background music in the classroom and to set a positive mood for staff meetings. This is replacing an old "wired" stereo I have been using in my classrooms for many years - of course a wired system is going to be louder no matter what, but I was looking for something that was easier to set up and also a "portable" speaker to take along to staff meetings and to use by the pool on weekends. That's quite a list of needs and the bluetooth capability seemed to meet all the requirements.
Setting up the speaker was very easy and no problem pairing with any of my bluetooth devices. For the sound itself, my first impression was that the sound was not as loud as expected (compared to a wired system so not a suprise) but when using the speaker I was impressed by how the sound filled the room. The music is easy to hear and the volume actually needs to be turned down some even in a room full of teenage students. It seems like the quality of the sound is very good, which means I don't need to turn it up full blast just to be able to fill the room with music. There is plenty of bass beat, but doesn't have the "thumping" that is popular these days, but drowns out the midrange and highs. Then I took the speaker to a staff meeting and got many compliments on the quality of the speaker and "where did you get that" and "how much was it" questions.
The built-in handle is a nice feature, and reminds me of the "boom box" craze from many years ago when hipsters would carrry a cassette tape box on their shoulder and bop down the street. Welcome to the future where technology has improved and now the "boom box" is a bluetooth speaker playing from your phone! Everything changes, but everything remains the same.
Battery life will vary depending on the volume, but I used the speaker non-stop from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm (9 hours) at "medium" volume, and the battery indicator only went from 5 lights to 3 lights - less than half the charge used in a full day of listening. Turning it up will draw more current, but I don't see any problem cranking it up all the way and still having a full day of listening. Being able to plug in a phone to keep the phone charged while playing is really nice, and should come in quite handy especially outdoors.
There are many portable speakers on the market - some larger, and some smaller. This one seems right for me as it can be placed strategically in a room for best sound quality, easily moved to another location, including by the pool or on the back deck without having to worry about water damage, and big enough where I don't have to worry too much about it walking away in someone's backpack or pocket.
Overall a good value with lots of uses and good sound quality. If you want smaller, get something smaller. If you want the thundering bass beat - get the Nyne "Rock" model and it will stir your tea for you. Otherwise, this is a good speaker that is small enough to move around, and large enough to provide good quality sound in a fairly large room.

Easier than I expected...
on June 12, 2017
Posted by: banjo
In reading the reviews and looking at the product description, I was expecting a somewhat complicated coffee grinder (digital readout and whatnot) that would have a learning curve. Much to my surprise this was a very simple device that took just a few minutes to go through and start using! Three quick push-button choices for coffee strength, an easy lever to set coarse-to-fine grounds, and a quick flip of a dial to choose the amount of coffee needed. Easy Peasy and within just a few minutes I was brewing coffee! Nicely built and very sturdy construction, looks easy to keep clean and has a cleaning brush included to get the nooks and crannies. Mostly used for basic "morning cuppa coffee" and definitely nicer to have freshly ground beans instead of pre-ground. After adding sugar and creamer, it's hard to say that it makes a significantly better cup of coffee (I'm not a coffee connoisseur as far as that goes) but it is a nice touch of high living to grind my own beans and get the best brew I can without adding a lot of time and effort to the process. Overall, a nice kitchen appliance that looks like it will hold up for a long time and adds a special touch to the morning "up and at 'em" first cuppa coffee ritual.

Nice Sound - Easy Peasy to set up & use...
on June 4, 2017
Posted by: banjo
Got this to use as a sound system for the family TV. Setup was easy using the included HDMI cable, and after powering up the soundbar and sub-woofer everything was working in just a few minutes. Automatic synchronization (wireless) between the sound bar and the sub-woofer... I didn't have to do anything! Could not have been easier!
Sound quality is good and the provided remote (batteries included) allows easy change to the optimized settings for music, sports, or movies. The remote is usually stashed away in a drawer, as the TV remote handles the volume. My TV switched automatically to use the Polk speakers, and the volume control on the TV remote shows on the screen. No problems with synchronization between the sound system and the TV. (Note: hooked up to the TV through the HDMI/ARC port)
TV is in a medium-sized room, and the sound fills the room nicely, without too much 'thumping' from the sub-woofer. Plenty of power to the sound system, as it can be turned up 'too loud' for comfort - so there is no lack of performance and responsiveness.
The speaker bar and sub-woofer are small enough to be put behind the TV, so out of sight and sound is clear.
Don't use the Bluetooth music streaming on a regular basis, but tried it out to see how it went and no problems pairing and playing from a phone or tablet. Not a primary reason for getting this system, but nice to have and never know when it will come in handy in the future.
Overall, a good investment to enhance TV viewing. As with all things, there are certainly better and much more expensive systems available, but short of trying to set up a concert hall system or moving to a surround-sound setup, this should meet the needs for improved sound while watching movies and sporting events. Easy to set up, and simple to use - what's not to like?

Future-proof router covers the block...
on May 15, 2017
Posted by: banjo
This one has all the bells and whistles and sure is larger than anything I have had before. In reading the reviews, some of them sound like you would need a forklift to handle this device, but it’s just about a foot x a foot – so a large shelf works just fine. I was actually kind of disappointed when it arrived, because I thought it would be bigger after reading a few reviews.
Actually, seems like this one is best suited for a very very very large house, church, business, apartments… it has the range and power to push a signal quite a distance. All the neighbors are picking up the signal, so it goes without saying to be sure and have a mighty fine password so folks aren’t helping themselves to your internet.
For the house, no problems with the signal in any area, including the outside property. Set up was very straightforward and other than having to remember to use the MAC cloning feature to enable the internet connection for the router > network, setup was smooth. Everyone in the house has plenty of bandwidth and no problem getting a signal on any device. With the horsepower of this router, I am sure we could have a neighborhood block party and everyone could get on the “Guest” network (change the password after the party or switch off “Guest”) and simultaneously stream a Netflix movie. Really, this router can transmit more signal that the internet provider can push. Maybe when we move to fiber optic that might hit the router’s limit >> but we aren’t there yet.
If you are buying this for a residence and looking for something that you won’t buy and then wish you had spent a little more for a better unit… this is the one. I have gotten tired of spending 2 weeks researching everything out there before buying some technology (phones, laptops, routers, speakers, etc…) so now I just like to buy something I know will do everything I need and then some, from a manufacturer with an established reputation. This one works and exceeds the need and I have heard of the company that makes it. DONE.
One thing I noticed in researching this model is that there are two versions. This is the AC4000, which has 4 LAN ports (+ the modem port), and there is also an AC5400 model, which has 8 LAN ports and runs about $50 to $100 more. The AC5400 seems to be designed more for small business, with the extra LAN ports for hardwiring more computers or printers. Other than that, they both seem to be the same.
The term “future proof” comes up a lot in reviews for this router, and that’s exactly the case. If you want to get something now that will be capable of handling your house or small business for quite a few years… this would be the one to get.

Light, waterproof, good battery life, sound is OK

LifeProof - Aquaphonics AQ9 Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Obsidian sand
OK this is the smallest of the Aquaphonics, and doesn’t have the storage compartment and all that. This works just fine for me, and it is compact, lightweight, and has a secure large-loop clip to hook it on a chair or table leg. Don’t expect audiophile-quality sound from this small a speaker, but that’s not what it is for. Sound quality is not such a big issue at the pool, you want to be able to hear the music and not have to worry about your speaker getting wet. This one does exactly those things. The sound is loud enough for the family to hear, not so darn loud that people across the pool give you the stink-eye, and easy to use the waterproof buttons to change the music or skip a few songs on the playlist.
Bluetooth pairing took just a few seconds with the phone, and wife, son, and myself all have paired up and the speaker has no problem picking up the active device. Can’t say exactly how long the charge lasts, as it hasn’t run out of juice during several outings – so seems to be an “all day” device. Charging takes several hours, but seems to charge OK from the car power outlet to give it a boost or re-charge while on the road.
There are a lot of these types of speakers all over the internet, and maybe one that sounds as good for a little less… but who has time to do intensive research for everything you buy? This one works for me.
Overall, a good device for it’s intended purpose, hearing those “pool party” songs without having to worry about the weather or the water – while pretty much lasting the whole day on a charge. The large-loop clip is an extra bonus to keep it from walking away if someone admires it a bit too much when your head is turned. Kind of hard to walk away with the speaker playing in your hand, but you never know…

However it works... it makes hair shine!
on May 9, 2017
Posted by: banjo
OK full disclosure… my wife is the one using and reviewing the Panasonic - Nanoe Hair Dryer as I don’t have enough hair to qualify. With that said, the Nanoe is very light for its size, and easy to hold and use. I still don’t quite understand the “Nano Technology” that is said to pull moisture from the air for the drying stream, but something is definitely different about the way this dryer works, as hair is much smoother compared to other dryers, and no tendency to “frizz out” as the hair gets fully dry.
This is a very nice change from the “buy it at the discount store” hair dryers, and one of those “do something nice for yourself” things that helps the day start on a brighter note knowing that you are using a quality hair dryer that gives you a little “pampering” when getting ready for work.

Small & portable - better than the phone speaker!
on April 22, 2017
Posted by: banjo
Well, this is a neat little piece of technology - just don't expect a big cloud of sound to wrap around your head, which is a good thing if you need to be aware of your surroundings. Everything has a purpose, and this little portable speaker fits the bill for getting better volume and quality of music when exercising or running/walking, without being "plugged in" to earbuds or headphones that might keep you from hearing cars on the road or kids in the other room. It's a mono speaker and "quality" is about what you expect but no surprise there. Phone calls work OK, sound quality is going to depend on what you are doing and where you have the Polk-Bit clipped on - neckband of your shirt gives the best phone call experience. Battery runs for a couple or three hours, depending on the volume of course. Clip is sturdy and I didn't worry about it coming off during normal exercise or activity. Probably the best feature is the end cap that pops off and has a standard-sized USB plug for charging. Really, one less little cable to have to mess with and I like just popping off the end cap and plugging in to the computer to charge back up. You can also use a USB charging plug (not included) if you don't want it hanging off your computer. Overall a nice little piece of technology that doesn't cost a lot and comes in handy when needed.

Pairs nicely with the speaker...

Bose Revolve Bluetooth Speaker Charging Cradle
This accessory pairs nicely with the speaker, and makes it a little easier to keep the speaker topped off. I take the portable speaker from room to room with me (office, bedroom, den) and keep the cradle in the office where i use the speaker the most. Very convenient as all you do is put the speaker on the cradle with the contact points aligned and the charging starts right away. Very quick and easy. Speaker has a charging port for standard mini-USB plug from computer or outlet, so you can get by without the cradle, but I believe you will be glad you spent a little more to get the best convenience from the excellent Bose speaker.

Great for older geeks who don't need the "sizzle"
By banjo from macon, ga
Actually the "top of the line" G910 gaming keyboard was marked down to a lower price when I got this, but too much "gamer" stuff on the G910 and not for an 'older professional' who wants to appear more mature than his 13-year-old gaming son. IMO the G910 wasn't selling as well as hoped, and the G810 is (to me) the superior model in design, appearance, and performance.
This G810 looks professional on the desk, has OUTSTANDING color display (note that the 'special' keys on the number keys are also illuminated -- missing on many of the other illuminated keyboards - aren't these ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) the ones you can never remember when typing in the dark?), no "bottom of the keys" light spillover that takes away from the illumination focus, superior engineering on the Romer-G switches (Check out the tour of the Romer-G factory in Japan on YouTube), and feels like a BRICK in the hand (a GOOD BRICK) with heavy-duty construction. The 3-way adjustable tilt and huge rubber feet on the bottom will keep this from sliding around on any desk, including glass-tops. The only thing that makes this look like a "gamer rig" is the FABULOUS and CRISP color displays... which are easy to see even with the lights on in the room > fully adjustable to get it just the way you want at home or at work. I may be an old-timer, but I don't mind showing off a little bit and this keyboard is an EYE-CATCHER when the lights start doing the 'wave' across the keyboard!
I read all the reviews and fiddled with the keyboards on display and there seem to be "Logitech Nay-Sayers" who can't bear the idea of using anything other than the older design "cherry" keys. I have gone from manual touch-typing > to I B M Selectric > to I B M 'clicky' keyboard (still one of my favorites) > to membranes > to whatever-cheapo-keyboard Dell includes in their educational computers > to a Saitek PK17U Cyborg > to this keyboard. This one is the best by FAR! Re: keys... you get a little 'click' so the sound and some tactile/touch reinforcement for keyboarding (typing) is there, but not too loud and for me just enough to let me know I hit the key. Yes it feels different from the cheapo Dell keyboard i just unplugged and replaced, but every keyboard is different and this one feels like driving a luxury car!
Speaking of my son, he is now looking over at my new keyboard and looking at his illuminated keyboard and I think I know what he will be asking for come Christmas. Fortunately, the box still had the promotion of free download and activation code for "The Division" so the kid has something to keep him busy until Santa Claus comes.
If you are an old crab like me, but like a little 'sizzle' when using your computer and want to treat yourself to a smooth-as-silk keyboard... this is the one I would recommend. Leave the "whoopee" keyboards to the kids.
PS - you can hit a quick button on the keyboard and turn off the light display if you want to turn off the light show for a while.

Update @ Christmas 2016
December 21, 2016
Mentioned that my son was keeping an eye on my G810 from the get-go... first time I let him 'test drive' my G810 he says "ooooh, that feels nice" and decided he wanted to go to mechanical keyboard. He has a 'gamer' RBD keyboard (non-mechanical) with extra bells and whistles he has been using for a year or two, but instantly fell in love with the mechanical feel. Just gave him a "Week before Christmas" present of his own G810. He had his pick of the models available, and after tapping some keys and looking at the different models chose to get the G810. Just goes to show the "fancy schmancy" keyboards might look more-cooler-better but the proof is in the feel of the keys. It's a keyboard, after all.

Meet the unrivaled, everyday noise canceling headphone for people who want to keep it simple. Hesh ANC is engineered with just the right amount of added features to make your life a little easier without a lot of additional technology that you might not need.

Does the headphone have a mic built into the headset where you can make phone calls?

yes there are actually 4 built-in microphones for the "ambient" function and for phone calls. i was using a "boom mic" gaming headset for my virtual meetings and phone calls, and when switching back and forth during a phone call and a meeting to check out the difference, the people in the meeting and on the phone call said they could not tell much difference between "boom mic" gaming headset and the Skullcandy headset. considering the comfort and battery life of the Skullcandy headset (see my review) i prefer the Skullcandy to the gaming headset, and also don't have to "switch" to earbuds when going back and forth from virtual meetings and classes and making or receiving phone calls. the Skullcandy headset works very nicely for all things all day long.

Pair Surface Go Type Cover with Surface Go* for a full keyboard experience anywhere. Ultra-compact, yet it includes a complete mechanical keyset, backlit keys, and extra-large trackpad. Plus, three colors are covered in rich Alcantara material¹ for an added touch of luxury and comfort.

What is the power source for the Microsoft Surface Go type cover?

the keyboards do not have a built-in battery that needs to be charged separately. the keyboard draws power (for the BACKLIGHTING - very nice!) from the computer battery when it is "popped" on. Nothing to worry about like forgetting to charge your keyboard, or losing the Bluetooth connection - it is all direct connection for power and signal. The Microsoft Surface keyboard seems to be something that everyone agrees is well designed and "one of the best" out there for a detachable keyboard/trackpad. Hope this helps and Stay Safe!

Do yoou have to use an app on your phone to install it?

phone app, tablet app or computer app - one or the other is needed to set up the printer. there is no "touch screen" display like other models, so you will need phone, laptop, desktop, chromebook, tablet.... anything will do as long as it connects to your home network (or the same network as the printer).

HP OMEN Obelisk by HP Desktop: Play graphically intense games with this HP OMEN Obelisk desktop computer. You can easily store large amounts of media and other data on the 1TB hard drive and install games and programs on the 256GB SSD for fast access. This HP OMEN Obelisk desktop computer has 16GB of memory for multitasking effectively, and the Intel Core i7-9700 processor handles resource-intense programs efficiently.

Is the storage (and other features, I suppose) upgradeable? If I wanted to install higher storage (a 2TB HDD or a 500g SSD, for example) is that doable? If so, is it easily doable?

very easy to swap or add hard drives - the solid panel pops right off and there are two drive bays ready to go. i did what you are asking about by pulling the 1TB drive that came with the system out, and replacing with a 2TB drive that already had my game files on it (steam stuff - you know what i mean) and adding a 1TB SSD in the second bay. Transferred the system settings from the "old" computer to this new one using TransWiz to migrate the windows 10 user profiles from the old machine and this freed up the 1TB SSD from the "old" machine to be used for game files on the Obelisk.

Are both side panels removable? I know the windowed one will come off, but is the other side detach as well? Thanks in advance for your answers!

yes both side pop off very easily. the clear side panel for access to the motherboard, the solid side panel gives you access to the quick-change slots for 2 hard drives. I swapped out the provided hard drive with one that already had game files on it, and the popped in a SSD in the blank bay. just use the rails to mount the hard drives and leave the little tiny screws in the tool box. easy peasy!

Is the file format FAT 32?

yes the drive comes pre-formatted as FAT32. if you want to transfer files larger than 4GB then you will need to re-format NTSF.

Is the model of this phone 1660 or 1778? I know this question was asked, but not answered. I know they were having trouble with the audio in these two models.

i got 10+ couple days ago and it says model I3223. software is most current 53.0.A.4.79 so no update needed as i have heard about some Xperia 10 early shipments. from what i have heard some issues were from software that needed updating, and i have had no issues with audio, bluetooth, or other concerns.

i saw an ad at UK store that said "free case from SONY" that ships with the phone. i expect it will be hard to find a case (or screen protector) for this new phone. does anyone have an idea if the BestBuy package comes with "free case" ??

well i will answer my own question. got my 10+ and no 'free case' for US customers. box came with phone, charger, USB cable, and micro-documentation.
