Martial arts hero Thomas Ian Griffith wrote, produced, and starred in this action thriller. Terry McCain (Griffith) is a Chicago police officer who is bent on revenge after his partners are killed by Mafia gunmen. McCain knows that he won't be able to get the justice he demands within the system, so he persuades his boss, Devlin (Lance Henriksen), to keep him off the list of suspects after he kills mob kingpin Sal DiMarco (Burt Young). McCain changes his mind about killing the crime boss, but someone else with a grudge guns down DiMarco instead; however, when he tries to meet with Devlin to explain what's happened, he's met by a squad of killers. McCain learns that his partner Frankie (Tony Todd) is actually still alive and was in cahoots with Devlin to steal $3 million in drug money away from DiMarco, a deal scotched by McCain's desire for revenge. The supporting cast includes James Earl Jones and Charlotte Lewis.

Other than the exceptional cast involved in this film, I don't really have anything great to say about it. Decent action at best.

Michael Apted's under-appreciated Thunderheart comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages. Supplemental materials are limited to a theatrical trailer. While the extras leave something to be desired, the sound and picture quality are solid enough that this Columbia/TriStar disc should not disappoint those looking for something outside of the Hollywood mainstream.

Overrated Film

'Thunderheart' is a movie I figured would be very good, instead it did nothing but bore me throughout. Widescreen and trailer.

Beeban Kidron cross-dressing comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles on this release, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include deleted scenes. This is a fine release from Universal that does offer excellent sound and picture quality even though it is short on meaningful extras.

Strange, But Good Acting

The only good thing about this movie was the acting, everything else seemed silly, and I wouldn't bother with this one if I were you. Widescreen, minor bonus features.

Kevin Bacon and Robocop director Paul Verhoeven teamed up for this invisible-man story, which arrives on DVD in a special edition courtesy of Columbia/TriStar. It's a splendid package, with plenty to offer. The film itself is presented in a 1.85:1 widescreen anamorphic format. It is an impressive transfer, with strong depth and clarity. The sound is also noteworthy. Dolby Digital 5.1 is used to full effect here, especially during the harrowing lab sequences or the pell-mell chase at the end. The DVD also offers a mountain of extras, including three deleted scenes and a commentary by Bacon, Verhoeven, and screenwriter Andrew Marlowe. There are also a ton of short featurettes. Clocking in at a few minutes each, they provide details about various effects sequences and other behind-the-scenes info. Viewers are also treated to a before-and-after look at three key scenes in the movie, as well as the usual trailers and bios. Regardless of what one thinks of the film itself, the Hollow Man DVD is worth a look. The excellent picture and sound, combined with the bounty of extras, make this a special edition that lives up to its promise.

Howie Mandel obeys his animal instincts in this comedy, which gets a streamlined presentation for its release on DVD. Walk Like a Man has been transferred to disc in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono. The dialogue is in English, with optional subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. As a bonus, this release also includes the film's original trailer.

I remember really liking this movie as a kid, but when viewing it recently, couldn't believe what a bad movie it really is. Taking into account the plot, I'm not really surprised I don't enjoy it as an adult. Anyway, this one is probably best for those under the age of 10, but I'm sure there are those who are older that still get a kick out of it. Not much on this dvd release, just the movie, in full-screen only...

Sub-Par Sequel

Although not nearly as poor as 'Superman III,' 'Superman IV: the Quest For Peace,' does nothing to glorify the franchise. Only die hard fans will enjoy this sub-standard sequel.

Richard Pryor Saves Superman?

When Superman has to be rescued by Richard Pryor, you know the 'Superman' series has gone one movie too far. Only recommended for fans who can stand this dismal outing of the famed comic-book hero.

Sylvester Stallone and Rutger Hauer star in the crime thriller Nighthawks, which makes its debut on DVD with an anamorphic widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The film has never looked better on home video. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. The film's original theatrical trailer is included and may very well make this disc worthwhile all by itself. This is a fine release that will please fans of the film as well as Stallone fans and genre enthusiasts.

'Nighthawks' is an excellent thriller that has long been underrated in my opinion. Very cool movie and good performances by the entire cast. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, no bonus features.

It's astounding how timeless 1980's The Elephant Man is. David Lynch's studio debut, set in Victorian England and based on the true story of the hideously deformed John Merrick (John Hurt), boasts as much emotional impact today as it did when it was first released. Much of that timeless quality is credited to the Oscar-nominated Art Direction and Costume design, but particularly to the choice of shooting on true black-and-white film stock instead of eliminating the color in postproduction (according to co-executive producer Mel Brooks in a retrospective interview). That could account for the lack of radiance in the gray tones -- the grays don't have the shimmer we've come to expect from digital transfers -- but again, it only heightens the old-fashioned feel of the film. Lynch's trademark ambient industrial sounds emerge from all directions in the Dolby 5.1 transfer, giving dimension to the intriguing, carefully arranged sound design. It would have been nice if Lynch himself had appeared in the interview segment, but Oscar-nominated makeup artist Christopher Tucker, who also narrates the brief photo gallery and gives a tour of his shop, fills the gap nicely.

When you think life is hard and that things couldn't be worse, I highly recommend you sit down and watch this film. One of the best movies ever made in my opinion, 'The Elephant Man' is simply an astonishing piece that is sure to reach your heart. Based on the true life story of19th century Englishman John Merrick, who was born with a rare bone disease. Presented beautifully here on this anamorphic widescreen dvd. Highest recommendation!

Napoleon Dynamite struck me as one of those movies that would be in the theater for a weekend and then gone. However, while it didn't do incredible business at the box-office, it did just enough to get people talking, which in turn ended up making it one of the biggest dvd hit releases of the year when it arrived to home video. Odd and strange, yet lighthearted, this is a recommended film. This collector set is only recommended for those who like toy collectibles, otherwise save yourself some money and just buy the dvd separately.
