Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratios of the movies from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a you a picture that is much different than what was originally seen in the theater. Buy the widescreen version instead.

'Top Gun' is a movie that just didn't do anything for me. I had heard great things about it, but upon viewing it, was utterly disappointed. Anyway, for those who do enjoy this one, here is a good collector's edition with plenty of goodies included.

Harold Ramis' remake, Bedazzled comes to DVD in this handsome package from 20th Century Fox. The disc contains a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a pair of commentary tracks, one featuring the director, the second featuring star Elizabeth Hurley and producer Trevor Albert. A photo gallery, a look at the costume design, and a making-of featurette round out this THX certified disc that should please both fans of the film and DVD enthusiasts with its quality picture and sound, as well as its entertaining extras.

'Bedazzled' is both a funny and thought provoking film. It basically makes the blunt statement that 'nobody's perfect,' and that you're who you are for a reason, and people will love you regardless. I recommend this witty movie, presented here in it's original widescreen format.

Tom Shadyac directs Robin Williams in the feel-good comedy Patch Adams, which comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. There are neither subtitles nor closed captions on this release. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this disc does offer excellent sound and picture quality.

'Patch Adams' is a disappointing and boring movie that gets more attention on this dvd than it deserves. Skip it.

You Lose Almost 50% Of the Image With Full-Screen

Buy Only If You Don't Have the 4-Disc Version

This extended version dvd set, part of of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, is quite good, though I cannot recommend it if you already own the 4-disc extended version. There are some new bonus features on this most recent version, but unfortunately almost all the previous bonus features from the past dvd releases have been dropped, as has the DTS audio. Fanatic fans may want to purchase anyway, but it's an unnecessary and costly investment in my opinion.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This dvd set of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, is quite good, though I cannot recommend it since the dvd set containing the 'extended versions' is so much better. If you're going to invest in these movies, you may as well go all-out and buy the films in their most complete format.

'Wargames' is a movie that everyone should see at least once as it deals completely with the moral implications of thermonuclear warfare. Good writing along with great performances make this one well worth it. Whether or not to buy this one will depend on how often you like to watch it. But most fans are sure to jump for joy over the anamorphic widescreen transfer. Highly recommended!

This is one of the worst martial arts movies ever made, I'm dumbfounded that it found its way onto dvd. Don't bother.
