The second chapter in the "Bourne Trilogy," based on Robert Ludlum's best-selling espionage novels, reaches the screen in this sequel to the 2002 thriller The Bourne Identity. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has abandoned his life as a CIA assassin and has been traveling beneath the agency's radar, eventually reconnecting with Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente), the woman he loves. But Bourne is haunted by vivid dreams and troubling memories of his days as a killer, and he's not certain how much really happened and how much is a product of his imagination. When Bourne is led out of hiding by circumstances beyond his control, he must reconcile his past and present as he struggles to keep Marie out of harm's way and foil an international incident with dangerous consequences. The Bourne Supremacy also features Joan Allen as one of Webb's superiors, while Julia Stiles and Brian Cox reprise their roles as intelligence agents from the first film.

Ok, Just Like the Original

'The Bourne Supremacy' falls victim to the same problem that plagued the first film, which is a completely unbelievable story taking itself too seriously. Widescreen, plenty of bonus materials.

Doug Liman's box-office hit The Bourne Identity gets a new DVD release to coincide with the theatrical release of the film's sequel, The Bourne Supremacy. This "Explosive Extended Edition" of the film offers a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a new beginning and ending for the film, deleted scenes, a featurette about choreographing a fight scene, a featurette about how much the film resembles actual spy work, a short documentary on amnesia, and a profile of Robert Ludlum -- the author who created these characters. This is a solid release from Universal, who were kind enough to throw in a free ticket to see The Bourne Supremacy with all purchases of this disc.

Just Ok

I think 'The Bourne Identity' is ok entertainment, but for as serious as it tries to present itself, it's just a little too unbelievable. Widescreen, ample bonus.

"Over ten hours of entertainment" the box copy exclaims, and that may be true -- if you are a very, very slow reader. Actually, you can save yourself the trouble of watching either American Pie or American Pie 2 by clicking into the "Your Favorite Piece of Pie Chapter" in the Bonus section of American Pie 2; it's a list of the ten best scenes, in their entireties, from both movies, thereby dispensing with the plots and secondary characters, which were theatrical padding and afterthoughts in the first place. There's also a "classic quotes" chapter, which includes the clip from the film of the character saying the memorable line. The bonuses on the sequel's disc include a gag reel of the actors cutting up on the set, a "making of" documentary showing the actors acting up on the set, outtakes of the actors...( you get the idea). No doubt, these kids had a ball making the movie; with all the cutting up, it's a wonder the movie got made at all. There also are deleted scenes (most of them are pointless), casting tapes of the principal actors from the original movie (shot on what looks like rather low-end video), commentaries, DVD-ROM features, the "Be Like That" music video featuring 3 Doors Down (along with musical highlights from the film), and text bios of the filmmakers and actors (read them slowly and you just might get that promised ten hours). The special features are unrated, so be prepared for a significant amount of profanity from those actors cutting up on the set.

No Class
on May 13, 2008

If there's one thing all the 'American Pie' films have in common, it's that they're all lacking class in every which way. Tasteless comedy that's even worse on this 'unrated' edition.

Seems Copied Off an 'Amazing Stories' Episode
on May 13, 2008

I'm not sure where Stephen King got his idea for this, but it seems to me to almost have been completely borrowed from the 1980's television show 'Amazing Stories,' in an episode titled 'Life On Death Row,' starring Patrick Swayze. Plenty of bonus material on this special edition dvd.

Rebecca DeMornay essays the role of the vengeful nanny, terrorizing the family of the woman she deems responsible for her husband's death in Hollywood Home Pictures' release of this taut thriller from director Curtis Hanson. Presented in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and closed-captioned with English Dolby Digital Surround audio, this DVD also offers the option of a French Dolby Digital Stereo audio track and features a theatrical trailer. Parents will think twice before calling the babysitter after this nail-biting tale of obsessive revenge.

Creepy

I'll be the first to admit that I find Rebecca De Mornay very attractive in this film, up until you realize she's crazy. It's just a shame that her character is so creepy, but the movie is still worth a viewing. Widescreen.

Decent Holiday Entertainment
on May 13, 2008

'The Muppet Christmas Carol' gives us pretty much what we would expect for an adaptation of the Dickens tale. While not particulary spectacular, the film is still decent holiday entertainment for the family.

John Huston's big-screen adaptation of the Broadway smash Annie arrives on DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. Though fine for what it is, the full-frame transfer cramps the film in a way that will bother film lovers. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while French and Spanish soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Thai, and Korean subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a ten-minute featurette with the now grown Aileen Quinn, who discusses the wonderful time she had making the movie and how difficult the process of getting the part was. Another extra allows youngsters to sing along with the songs in the film. A music video from the Swedish pop band Play performing "It's the Hard-Knock Life," and a selection of trailers rounds out this release.

I Liked It As a Kid
on May 13, 2008

I loved watching 'Annie' as a kid and enjoyed the musical sequences. As an adult, I don't quite care for the picture as much, but it's still not bad, and a good film for the family to watch. Plenty of bonus features, but sadly full-screen only.

Robert Rodriguez's low-budget follow-up to his no-budget smash El Mariachi, Desperado, comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while Portuguese and Spanish soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are accessible in all of those languages, as well as Thai and Mandarin. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Rodriguez. This is the same track that appeared on the laserdisc of Desperado, but it is highly entertaining. Rodriguez leads off by saying that with El Mariachi he wanted to show how 6,000 dollars could look like six million, and in Desperado he wanted to show how six million could look like 60 million. For do-it-yourself filmmakers, the disc also contains a free trial of some video editing software. A ten-minute featurette on Rodriguez's editing techniques, filmographies, trailers, and a preview of Once Upon a Time in Mexico round out this strong release from Columbia/TriStar.

I Liked the Action Sequences
on May 13, 2008

I didn't think that 'Desperado' was a great movie by any means, but its got some really cool gun-fighting sequences that make it worth a watch. Fans should enjoy this special edition with plenty of bonus features, but fans of DTS sound may want to buy the more expensive SuperBit version.

Philip Kaufman's adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel Rising Sun comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer. This is a decent disc from 20th Century Fox that will satisfy fans of the film, but does nothing to reach those who ignored it during its theatrical release.
