Incorrect Aspect Ratio
on May 13, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture in which you lose almost 50% of the image in every frame.

Roger Donaldson's The Bounty comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible, and the soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer. This is a solid release from MGM/UA that should satisfy fans of this oft-told tale.

Acceptable Remake
on May 13, 2008

Another remake of the 'Mutiny On the Bounty' tale starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins. While not at all a bad movie, it's definitely one you'll probably only want to watch once. So, I would only recommend purchase of this one to die-hard fans, of which I can't imagine there are many. Widescreen.

Nothing Special
on May 13, 2008

I was shocked that this film made as much money as it did and then went on to spawn a couple of equally succesful sequels. I wasn't all that impressed with the film, though it does have some well done sequences. Recommended to fans only. Widescreen with ample bonus material.

I Barely Laughed
on May 13, 2008

'Wedding Crashers' offered very little humorous material in my opinion, as I barely laughed throughout the entire film. For those who did enjoy it, the dvd is worth the buy, and this 'Uncorked Edition' offers some additional footage not seen in the original theatrical release. Widescreen.

The third film in the Critters franchise (featuring a young Leonardo DiCaprio) gets a simple presentation in its release on DVD. Critters 3 has been given two transfers for this disc, a letterboxed (and 16 x 9 enhanced) version at the aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and a pan-and-scan version at the full-screen ratio of 1.33:1. The audio (in English) has been remixed for playback in Dolby Digital 5.1, and the feature is also closed-captioned in English. A trailer is included as a bonus.

Why Oh Why?
on May 13, 2008

Taking into consideration how bad 'Critters 2' was, I'm shocked that they even bothered making this third film of the series. Even more surprising, is that it got a dvd release. Skip it.

The sequel to the surprise sci-fi hit Critters gets a simple but effective presentation ion this DVD edition. Critters 2: The Main Course features two transfers of the film -- a widescreen edition letterboxed at the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (and enhanced for 16 x 9 playback), and a pan-and-scan full-screen version at 1.33:1. The film's original English-language soundtrack has been remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation, while an alternate French-language track is in Dolby Digital Mono. The feature is closed-captioned in English. The film's original trailer is included as a bonus feature.

Stick With the Original 'Critters'
on May 13, 2008

the first 'Critters' was a surprisingly good low-budget sci-fi flick. Simply put, this sequel leaves a lot to be desired. For whatever it's worth, I'd recommend not even bothering with this one and just sticking with the original.

Inspired by the popular Disneyland ride, The Haunted Mansion stars Eddie Murphy as the head of a family that finds itself vying against a group of 999 ghosts in the titular abode. Also starring Jennifer Tilly and Terence Stamp, the film comes to DVD in widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. A dubbed French audio track in Dolby Digital Stereo and Spanish are also included. Along with the feature presentation, the disc is packed with supplemental extras. Among the bells and whistles are a blooper reel, a collection of deleted scenes, a virtual tour of the mansion, and two behind-the-scenes featurettes. For viewers with DVD-ROM capabilities, there is additional bonus material, including a history of the theme-park-attraction behind the movie, a ghost maker, photo galleries, and desktop themes. A full-screen version with the same features is also available.

Waste of Time

This dismal production confused the heck out of me, because it's just absolutely awful in every way. I didn't think the movie could possibly be as bad as it turned out to be. By far, one of Eddie Murphy's worst films. Skip it.

Mimi Leder's meteor-headed-for-earth disaster film Deep Impact is revisited on DVD with this special edition that boasts a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and a second English soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Leder and her special effects creator supervisor Scott Farrar, three different featurettes covering various aspects of the production, trailers, and a still photo gallery. This is a first-rate release from Paramount.

Seems 'Thrown' Together
on May 13, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
For some reason, 'Deep Impact' seems like a movie that was shot and then just 'Thrown' together without much care during the editing process. The acting appears wooden in many scenes, and when all is said and done, the movie just isn't that entertaining.

A Little Disappointing
on May 13, 2008

Considering the superb cast 'City Slickers' had to work with, I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was slightly disappointed with the overall product. The cast has so much more potential than was put to use in my opinion. Widescreen with decent bonus material.

The hit comedy Big Momma's House comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround as well. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director and the producer of the film, deleted scenes with optional commentary, bloopers, footage from the make-up tests, and a pair of music videos. This THX certified disc is an excellent release from 20th Century Fox.

Bad 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Ripoff
on May 13, 2008

The only thing I could think of when watching this film, was how much it seemed to borrow from the much better 'Mrs. Doubtfire' starring Robin Williams. Widescreen.
