Wayne's World, one of the few Saturday Night Live skits to become a successful movie, also makes for a fine DVD. First off, Paramount presents the disc in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and it is anamorphic. While the image shows some of the signs of a relatively low budget, it still looks very good. Colors are realistic though detail is not always as strong as would be hoped for. The sound, which has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, is clear and distortion free, even though there is a lack of any surround material. It wouldn't be expected in a film like this, so it's no disappointment. Also available are English and French surround tracks. A real surprise is the addition of a new audio commentary from director Penelope Spheeris. Her enthusiasm makes for a fine track with little gaps and plenty of personal and professional anecdotes. It's obvious that she has a love for this film. Next up is a half-hour of interviews with the cast and crew. These are very well put together and also show how much they enjoyed making this film. Rounding out this nice disc is the theatrical trailer. Fans of this film should not pass up the disc, which they will find to be well worth their money.

Great If You Liked The S.N.L. Skits

'Wayne's World' is great for people who loved watching the duo of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey on NBC's Saturday Night Live. However, for those who didn't, like myself, the movie will only disappoint. Widescreen.

Acceptable Adaptation
on May 14, 2008

In my opinion, 'Zorro' will always be most appreciated as the black & white tv show I used to enjoy watching as a child. Still, this film adaptation isn't bad, and presents some interesting material. Plenty of bonus extras here too for those who enjoyed the film. Widescreen.

Howard Zieff's childhood comedy-drama My Girl comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, and a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include the theatrical trailer. This is an undistinguished release from Columbia/TriStar.

'My Girl' is a sweet story with some above-average acting performances. Well worth a viewing. Unfortunately, full-screen only.

This action comedy gets a simple but effective presentation on DVD. Gotcha! has been transferred to disc in its original widescreen aspect ratio, letterboxed on conventional televisions and enhanced for widescreen playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The English-language audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono, and the disc includes optional subtitles in French and Spanish. No bonus material has been included for this edition.

Didn't Think This One Would Get a Dvd

I have to admit that I'm surprised 'Gotcha!' got a dvd release. It's a cheesy campy movie, but I sure liked watching this one when I was a kid, and here it is in widescreen!

The Soundtrack is the Best Part
on May 14, 2008

This 80's movie starring Madonna is still best well known for its soundtrack, which is really the only element that stands out in this rather weak film. Still, it's not horrible, and I'm sure there's plenty of people who like it. Surprisingly, widescreen.

From its opening multi-language titles (that sure looks like Swedish) to the closing arrest of the entire Dark Ages cast by modern-day bobbies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail helped to define "irreverence" and became an instant cult classic. This time the Pythonites savage the legend of King Arthur, juxtaposing some excellently selected exterior locations with an unending stream of anachronistic one-liners, non sequiturs, and slapstick set pieces. The Knights of the Round Table set off in search of the Holy Grail on foot, as their lackeys make clippety-clop sounds with coconut shells. A plague-ridden community, ringing with the cry of "bring out your dead," offers its hale and hearty citizens to the body piles. A wedding of convenience is attacked by Arthur's minions while the pasty-faced groom continually attempts to burst into song. The good guys are nearly thwarted by the dreaded, tree-shaped "Knights Who Say Ni!" A feisty enemy warrior, bloodily shorn of his arms and legs in the thick of battle, threatens to bite off his opponent's kneecap. A French military officer shouts such taunts as "I fart in your general direction" and "I wave my private parts at your aunties." Rabbits are a particular obsession of the writers this time around, ranging from the huge Trojan Rabbit to the "killer bunny" that decapitates one of the knights. Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin collaborated on the script and assumed most of the onscreen roles, while Gilliam and Jones served as co-directors.

This One Did Nothing For Me

I have friends who think 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' is the funniest movie they've ever seen. I completely disagree with them, and would recommend you save your time for something more worthwhile. However, this super-sized collector's set is unbelievably loaded with bonus materials die-hard fans are sure to enjoy.

Ever since the first film hit theaters in 1992, the 3 Ninjas saga has pretty much had the market cornered on pint-sized martial-artist flicks. This DVD set includes the second, third, and fourth entries in the series, respectively titled 3 Ninjas Kick Back, 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up, and 3 Ninjas High Noon at Mega Mountain. Each picture is presented in full-screen with Dolby Digital Stereo sound.

Where's the First Movie?

I don't recommend this set because it leaves out the best film of the series (the first one). Plus, you're getting two movies (the third and fourth), that are really poor. Buy your kids the first and second movies separately.

One of the Worst Films Ever
on May 14, 2008

'3 Ninjas: High Noon At Mega Mountain' sets its own standard for atrocious entertainment. It's really so bad I'm not sure how kids could even stand to watch it. Rated on the internet movie database (IMDB) as one of the worst 100 films ever made. Skip this one.

In yet another sequel to the surprise family hit 3 Ninjas, the three young Ninja brothers, Rocky (Michael Treanor), Colt (Max Elliott Slade), and Tum Tum (Chad Power), are spending the summer with their grandfather (Victor Wong), who is tutoring them in the martial arts. However, there are foul doings afoot -- Jack (Charles Napier), an unscrupulous business tycoon, has been dumping toxic waste on a nearby Indian burial ground and keeping the matter quiet with kickbacks to the local police. When the Ninja brothers try to come to the aid of the local Indian tribe, Jack tries to intimidate them and their Native American friends, a plan that only makes the boys more determined to see that justice is done. 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up was actually shot in 1994, a year before 3 Ninjas Kick Back, and features the same three actors who played the Ninja brothers in the first film. However, 3 Ninja Kick Back, which replaced two members of the original cast, was released first.

Only Kids Will Like It
on May 14, 2008

Unlike the previous two '3 Ninjas' kids movies, this third of the series isn't likely to even remotely intrigue adults. Still, the kids will probably enjoy it. Full-screen.

The heroes of the family adventure comedy 3 Ninjas return in this sequel (though not all of them are played by the same actors). Rocky (Sean Fox), Colt (Max Elliott Slade), and Tum Tum (Evan Bonifant) are three brothers whose Grandfather (Victor Wong) is a ninja master teaching them martial arts skills. The boys' Little League team has a big game coming up, but before they can hit the diamond, they have to help Grandpa return a sacred Ninja dagger to Japan. However, one of Grandpa's longtime enemies, now a wealthy and ruthless businessman, plans to steal the knife, and the boys are sent on a mission to Japan to rescue the valuable weapon. At first the tycoon sends his inept nephew to face off against the young Ninjas, but when that plan fails, Rocky, Colt, and Tum Tum are met by a team of trained warriors, who to their surprise are led by a teenage girl named Miyo (Caroline Junko King). Miyo soon strikes up a friendship with the brothers who are supposed to be her sworn enemies, and with her help they recover the knife and teach her a few things about baseball that come in handy when the big game finally rolls around.

If You Liked the First...

This sequel to the highly popular '3 Ninjas' isn't nearly as good as its predecessor in my opinion, but it's still the best sequel of the series, and therefore recommended to those whose kids enjoyed the first. Full-screen.
