The Soundtrack is Better than the Movie
on May 14, 2008

'Flashdance' is another one of those movies whose soundtrack is actually better than the film itself. I wasn't personally entranced by this movie, but I'm sure some people were, and they're sure to enjoy this dvd.

I Wasn't Really Fond of This One
on May 14, 2008

'Crimson Tide' presents an interesting plot and starts off well, but just falls apart as it continues. The story just becomes more and more unbelievable, and by the end, I was almost bored with it. This expanded edition features extra footage that wasn't seen in the original theatrical release.

Great Effects, Cheesy Movie
on May 14, 2008

'Twister' is laden with top-notch special effects, but the movie itself is simply cheesy and completely unrealistic, so much in fact, that it actually makes the movie laughable in certain scenes. Widescreen with plenty of bonus materials.

Sadly Realistic

'Traffic' is not at all a comfortable viewing experience, but it's a truthful one, and an excellent one at that. Superbly directed with outstanding performances from the entire cast. Highly recommended, but huge fans may want to opt for the more expensive Criterion dvd set that features loads of material not seen on this dvd release. Widescreen.

Sleepy Hollow, Tim Burton's evocative, somewhat grisly adaptation of the classic Washington Irving story, comes to DVD with one of the most lavish and fully realized presentations yet for a Burton film. Starting with a widescreen, anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 and Surround Audio, the disc also features extras like an engaging and informative commentary by Burton, cast and crew interviews, biographies/filmographies, a photo gallery, the theatrical trailers, and a "making of" featurette. The commentary and interviews are especially entertaining, revealing how much camaraderie Burton has with actors like Jeffrey Jones, Johnny Depp, and Christina Ricci. Though separate, more in-depth sections on how the film's special effects were achieved would have been nice, the featurette covers enough of Sleepy Hollow's behind-the-scenes work to make it worthwhile. Along with the DVDs of Edward Scissorhands and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, this disc plays to the strengths of Burton's quirky, visually striking directorial style -- and also suggests that deluxe versions of Batman and Batman Returns will be even more impressive.

So Much Potential
on May 14, 2008

'Sleepy Hollow' is yet another Tim Burton directed picture that has so much potential, but instead fails miserably due to a ludicrous and twisted storyline that's extremely odd. Beautifully shot, the look of the film is its highlight, and it's a shame the story wasn't better, because this could have been a top-notch production. Widescreen.

Incorrect Aspect Ratio
on May 14, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture in which you lose almost 50% of the image in every frame.

1987's science fiction/romance/comedy/action Innerspace comes to DVD, with some decent results that will surely please fans. Though the image does occasionally show some grain and signs of wear, those deficiencies are kept in check and the transfer does look surprisingly sharp. The anamorphic 1.85:1 picture displays nice color and generally good detail. Though far from outstanding, there really isn't much to criticize. The sound, on the other hand, isn't very impressive. Remastering a new 5.1 Dolby Digital track was hardly worth the effort. All sound is from the main, front speaker with little use of the sides and virtually no utilization of the surrounds. While dialogue and effects are clear, this type of film could have taken advantage of a far wider sound field, but that simply isn't the case here. In addition to English, there are tracks in French, and strangely enough, Japanese. As for extra material, there is the usual trailer, but more importantly, a wonderfully enthusiastic commentary from director Joe Dante, producer Michael Finnell, costars Kevin McCarthy and Robert Picardo and Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Murren. They are a lively group, with jokes and interesting facts about the making of the film. Warner can be commended for giving this lesser known film a new life with this nice disc.

Interesting Concept

While not nearly one of my favorite films, 'Innerspace' is still watchable with some impressive special effects. Widescreen.

While not quite a special edition, the re-release of The Fugitive makes up for what the original disc lacked. As with the first DVD, this disc has excellent picture and sound. The image, which is as good if not better than the previous release, uses a strong anamorphic transfer in the original theatrical aspect ration of 1.85:1. The detail is sharp and colors are consistent. In addition, blacks are deep and solid. The sound is equally impressive. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is filled with effects that take advantage of the entire sound spectrum. A surround track in French, and subtitles in English and French, are also included. The original release of this title did not even have a trailer so it is exciting to see a little extra work go into this release. The highlight is a commentary track from director Andrew Davis and actor Tommy Lee Jones. Actually, Jones is rarely heard on this track, but Davis makes up for his absence with plenty of anecdotal information on making the film. Some of the things he talks about come as a real surprise. The rest of the supplemental information is not nearly as interesting, but still welcome. A 20-minute featurette called "On the Run With the Fugitive" combines film clips with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, but lacks depth. The other featurette is a seven-minute piece called "Derailed: Anatomy of a Train Wreck"; while fascinating, it is too short. The least interesting extra on this disc is an introduction from Davis and Harrison Ford, which is nothing more than a very brief set of interviews. Biographies and filmographies of the main players as well as the theatrical trailer are also included. While superior to the first disc Warner released, it really could use more to make it feel complete.

Never Quite Got It
on May 14, 2008

I never understood the big craze behind this movie starring Harrison Ford and based off the well known television show of the same name. A mediocre film at best in my opinion, with plenty of bonus materials on this widescreen special edition.

Mick Jackson directs former Saturday Night Live funnyman Dana Carvey in Clean Slate, which comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer. This is a solid release from MGM/UA.

Carvey's Talent Goes To Waste
on May 14, 2008

Dana Carvey is a great comedian. Sadly, his talent goes almost completely to waste in this rather bland film about a detective who loses his memory every single night while he's sleeping. Widescreen and full-screen.

For Pyro-Maniacs
on May 14, 2008

I didn't think much of 'Backdraft.' It has some excellent effects and stunt sequences, but unless you're a fire-fighter, or a pyro-maniac for that matter, there's just not that much to enjoy in my opinion. Plenty of bonus material for fans on this widescreen 2-disc special edition.
