Great Coffee. Easy. Versatile. Easy to Clean.
on March 14, 2023
Posted by: skylog
I didn’t know what to expect going in with this machine, but it absolutely won me over after some time…and a lot of coffee.
Initial setup is easy. It is pre-assembled, and all that is required is power and for you to fill the water tank and place a container under the spout for the initial cleaning. Run a brew cycle and you are good to go.
The machine is simple to use, has a lot of versatility, is very easy to clean, and, most importantly, it makes great coffee. Everything is basically self-explanatory and done with a push of a button. The buttons are clear, easy to understand, and responsive. It is like a Keurig, but without all the waste, and with the ability to use whatever beans you want (or pre-ground). Furthermore, all you need to do is fill water reservoir and the bean hopper (both will give you notice when they are low), and you get fresh ground coffee in multiple size cups (8,12,16, 20, 24 oz cups, or 3 oz espresso), to your liking and style (light, gold, bold, over ice, espresso), in about the same time. It is all really just the touch of a button or two. Furthermore, you can use the time/auto setting to have it be ready when needed. All in all, just a seamless, simple process.
I’ve found the coffee to taste fantastic. I am not sure what “formula” they are using, for beans to water, etc…but it has been right on for me to this point. Even the iced, or “over ice” as they call it has been on point which I did not really expect.
Simple to use, great coffee. What else is there? Well, cleanup. Here, again, it is done well. The grounds are formed into little pucks which are easier to dispose of, and the unit lets you know when various cleanings need to be done via icons on the display. It also seems to do a clean cycle upon each startup as well. I have only used whole beans, but I do imagine using pre-ground could lead to a little more mess here and there, but as a whole, it is easy to clean this machine.
If you can’t already tell, I do really like this machine. That said, if I had to nitpick a thing or two, it would be the size of the water tank and height of the machine itself. It is a “little” tall. It was not really an issue for me, but almost, and I think it is something to note. Some may have issues. Relatedly, while it is tall, it does not take up that much counter-space, so that is a positive…however, as a result I think they went with a bit of a small water reservoir. Again, this may not be an issue for many, and I guess you want fresh water in there all the time, but I do like some coffee, and I seem to be having to fill it up a bit more than I would prefer. Admittedly, a nitpick and small issue, but again, something to note.
In the end, I really like this coffee maker. I did not touch on it above, but I like the design. Simple, clean, and modern looking. Based on the construction, I think it will last for some time, even with how much coffee I tend to drink, but we will have to see. Beyond that, it is ridiculously easy to clean and maintain and most importantly, it makes some fantastic tasting coffee. For me, the reduced waste is also absolutely a major selling point. It is just unnecessary. I would point to my title above and say for all of those reasons and more I think just about everyone would like this coffee maker and I think the value is there for what you get.

Large. Great picture/specs. Check your use case.
on March 14, 2023
Posted by: skylog
I really like this monitor for many reasons, but at the same time, I am kind of torn. It performs very well (picture, response time), more or less has you covered on specs and connections, has a matte finish, which I prefer, and generally, does everything I want/need it to. All of that said, maybe it is too big (for me and my space), the software is a bit slow/laggy/clunky, and it does take some time to dial it in. Well, at least it did for me.
As a sort of common theme, setup is rather easy…like a TV. Basically, unbox and attach the stand. There really is not much more. The build is solid, about what you would expect from Samsung. It has a good number and variety of ports. I think most people will be covered. I am typically a wired guy when it comes to desktop/TV internet connectivity, and I think that would be a wise choice here. I am assuming for cost reasons…? but they decided to go with older Wi-Fi standards. Kind of a ding, but perhaps it is not an issue. The speakers are…” good.” They get fairly loud and should be ok for many, but if you are looking for a really nice audio experience you are going to want to add a bar or speakers to your setup.
The design/styling kind of walks the line between muted and gamer. Personally, and yes I know this is meant as a gaming monitor, I wish it just went plain, black, everywhere. It was close. That said, you have small bezels on the front with two very small LED bumps at the bottom corners and a rather plain white glossy back. All in all, most would consider a bit “plain,” but I think it looks good.
When it comes to the display, what everyone is really buying this for, I think it is fantastic. I know I may be in the minority, but I love a matte finish. It may degrade the color ever so slightly, but frankly, I don’t see it and I think the colors are very full, accurate, and detailed. The picture quality as a whole is great. Vivid, great contrast and brightness, and nice deep blacks (thanks to the Mini LED). HDR is solid and performs well. Further, I also really appreciate all the resolution at such a size. Admittedly, it did take me a bit of time to dial everything in to where I feel it really shined, but given how much it is going to be used I feel it was time well spent. Lastly, having the 144HZ refresh rate, 1ms response time, and Sync Tech, well, it just takes all of that good and makes it run smoothly. Of course, some of this will depend on your system, etc…but this thing was humming for me. Games looked great and ran great as well.
Additionally, you get some rather cool and unique gaming focused features from Samsung. Flex screen which allows you to adjust the screen size as well as expand the aspect ratio. Game mode. Aim stabilizer. Black equalizer. How much these appeal to you will be a personal thing, sure, but options are always nice to see.
Now, while this is being sold as a gaming monitor, it is also sort of a TV. Generally, it does this well. The Smart TV experience is what you see and expect from Samsung. There are a collection of apps that will work for just about everyone. Further, you also get a remote which gives you that TV feel as well. For me, however, I just felt the software was just slow and laggy. Not “horrible,” but definitely noticeable to me. This is sort of the same feel I got during the initial setup. Perhaps this is me, perhaps it get better with an update, and I do no think it is a deal breaker (depending on how you want to use it), but just something to note. That said, I do really like the versatility you get here. You can use the PC as a PC, game, add a game system, watch some content…all really without much hassle. That is really a nice feature.
My only other real concern, and this is just my situation, is size. It is BIG. I am struggling a bit to find the right space, distance, setup. I may explore mounting it, which I think would work great for me, but I will have to see. It is something to think about. While I love the resolution, using it for work and stuff has been a bit challenging. I think it will all work out, but it was not something I had really thought about.
Ultimately, though, I really do like this monitor. It looks good, is spec’d well, does everything I want/need it to do, and it does it well. Other than the few concerns I listed above, I think it would be a great, versatile choice for most people. My only last concern would be to check your use case. While the monitor/TV thing is a nice feature, I just think maybe you can get a better monitor for less and/or a better TV for less. If you don’t think you need them sort of together, maybe look in another direction.

Quick, Effective, Efficient Upgrade.
on March 7, 2023
Posted by: skylog
There aren’t too many things you can do to upgrade a laptop these days quickly and effectively. To be able to do that at a decent price point as well? This is exactly what I was looking for.
To be sure, my laptop is “getting by,” but as its age starts to show more and more, along with the ever-increasing demands put on it by newer (and older) software, its clock is certainly ticking.
Install for me was, well, a breeze. A couple of screws and a quick switch was all I needed to do (I removed 2 8GB DIMMs). Of course, this will be totally dependent on your machine, and absolutely be sure that you can install 2 DIMMs, given the seeming trend to solder some RAM to the motherboard. Frankly, a move I hate.
Immediately, I noticed a difference. Boot was quicker, everyday tasks were smoother, and I even saw some fairly dramatic results in the little bit of gaming I do on this machine. Given how I use my laptop, the snappier Chrome tab play has been most beneficial so far. General use and being able to open even more tabs (yes, I have an issue) has been great. Being able to do that as well as have increased performance while running other tasks at the same time really had me shaking my head as to why I did not do this sooner. I have been nothing but pleased so far.
I think given todays workloads and software environment, 32GB should sort of kind of be the floor on RAM. Especially when working in the confines of Windows. Perhaps in other operating systems, it may not be needed, and surely, if your use case is not that resource heavy, you can get by with 8GB or 16GB, but for many I think 32GB should be the route to take.
Ultimately, this RAM is perfect to upgrade a system. You can get increased performance across the board, a little bit of futureproofing, and can give some more life to an again system. It comes in at a very reasonable price and from a well-respected name in the space. Obviously, check your use case, and double check any compatibility issues, but I don’t really see anything but positives here.

Quiet, Smooth, Comfortable Shave. Very Happy.
on February 7, 2023
Posted by: skylog
After being away from electric razors for some time, I was able to give a slightly less robust Norelco a try. Now, while I was very pleased with how that one performed, I have to say I have come away even more impressed with this model. I think I can easily say it is the best electric razor I have ever used.
The shaver itself is well-built, a good weight, feels good in the hand, and, perhaps most importantly, fits very well in my hand. It just looks like a quality and premium device. The main button is responsive and the LED screen is clear, easy to understand and provides all the relevant data you might need (Battery % Indicator, Cleaning Indicator, Battery Low Indicator, Replacement Head Indicator, Travel Lock Indicator). From a hardware perspective, it is all good. It looks good too.
Beyond the shaver itself, you get the quick clean pod (with one cartridge), a fairly nice travel pouch, a precision trimmer, a cleaning brush, and the power cord. Pretty much all you need.
While all of these things are “good” to see, frankly, given this is a somewhat premium product in this space, what is really important to me is how it shaves. As I mentioned earlier, I have mostly been away from electric for some time, so I was a bit hesitant given my past experiences. To put it simply, I could not be happier with how well this shaver worked for me. So far, it has given me close, comfortable, and smooth shaves. Every time. Full stop. Quiet. Quick. Wet. Dry. No discomfort. I can’t say that I fully get all the “tech” involved here, but the shaver glides very easily over my face, doesn’t get caught up, and seems to hit all the angles my face throws at it. I have a pretty sensitive face (another reason I had some concerns) and some pretty thick facial hair, but I just haven’t had any problems. It just wasn’t something I was expecting and was a nice surprise. It was exactly what I was looking for.
Thankfully, cleanup is not only easy, but, honestly, I think kind of cool. The pod system is pretty simple, intuitive, and just works. I am not exactly loving the economics of replacements, but this is something I will have to explore and see how it all plays out.
Lastly, I also have to say that I am pleased with the battery life. Charges are relatively quick, and I will easily get quite a few shaves out of a single, full charge.
In the end, this is a great shaver, and I could not be more pleased with how it has worked for me. It has a great feature-set, cleanup is a breeze, and it does everything I need and want very well, and it does it comfortably.

Close and Comfortable Shaves. Easy to Maintain.
on February 7, 2023
Posted by: skylog
Simply, this a quality shaver. It works well, is well-built, and comes with just enough of the bells and whistles to give you that sense of a premium product.
I have mostly been a non-electric guy over the years, so I was a bit curious to see what has changed over time, and how/if things have improved. While I can only speak to my experience here, I am very pleased. Shaves are close, smooth, and comfortable. I have a rather sensitive face, and my facial hair comes in pretty thick, so I definitely had my concerns going in. No longer. The shaver really does seem to glide over my face, absolutely more than I remember prior ones in the past, and while there is the occasional tug here and there from solo hairs, it is so infrequent it is hardly worth a mention. I also think it has more to do with my facial hair than anything. Lastly, I really like the wet/dry capabilities. Flexibility and options are always nice. All in all, the shaves are great, comfortable, and quick, which, frankly, is my only real concern here.
Beyond that, though, I like the shaver itself. It seems well-built, feels good in the hand, and FITS very well in my hand. I was somewhat unprepared for how quiet it was. Clearly, a good thing, just was not something I was expecting. The LED display does a nice job of showing relevant information and “looks good.” Perhaps most important to me day to day is the charging and battery are solid. Charges are relatively quick, last me for a few shaves at a minimum, and as such are not much of a hassle. I am torn on the lack of an included brick (you get a cable, sadly USB A), as it is just more waste, but at the same time, the bathroom is just not a spot I have a lot of charging equipment. Just something to note.
Cleanup, which given my nature, was one thing I was excited to see is a breeze, and kind of neat to be honest. The pod system with the little base just works. Simple. Effective. Efficient.
I did not note it above, but you do also get a little travel case which is a nice add when you need to be on the road. Nothing fancy, but it works. You also get 1 quick clean cartridge pod. I suppose that is my one “issue” with this shaver, well, all electric shavers. You need to buy more stuff. After the initial outlay, you have to buy new blades (which are reasonable to be fair and “once a year”), as well as cleaning pods (which if you go first party are bit less so). This may start to add up. I guess it is just something to look at when taking this route.
Ultimately, I do really like this shaver. I was a bit hesitant given my history over the years, but it shaves close and most importantly to me, comfortably. The battery performs well, cleanup is very simple and effective, and I think it will hold up well over a fairly long period of time. I will have to see how the economics hold up, but all in all I am very happy.

Great Performance. Quality Throughout. Case?
on November 30, 2022
Posted by: skylog
Given I have had an inexpensive massage device for some time that provides some relief, but, frankly, was a classic case of you get what you pay for, I was really looking forward to seeing how this compared. In short, there really was no comparison.
From the moment I picked it up, I got the sense that the hype around the brand was warranted. It feels extremely well-built. Solid. A good weight. Same for the attachments (and how they attach). Even the screen was crisp and clear. The thing just shows a nice level of quality and refinement.
The performance, however, was even on another level for me. Everything, top to bottom, kind of stunned me. I thought I had an idea of what to expect, but it was pretty clear I didn’t. It is extremely powerful, gets DEEP into your muscles, and absolutely is hitting some wild frequency numbers. It more or less makes me feel like jelly. It is hard to really convey what or how good it feels, but it just makes you feel good. Relaxed. Calm. It does all of this while being, simply, ridiculously quiet. I can only compare to my prior (non Theragun) unit, but it was as if they were not even the same type of machine.
The adjustable head is nice, you can more easily target some areas, and I have really come to like the screen. As I mentioned, it is very easy to read, and it helps you get a little familiar with everything, especially at the beginning. There are some guided workouts, and it just displays information well. In a lot of ways, I appreciate the App in much the same manner. It is designed well, easy to navigate, and helps you get started with everything. I definitely think it is worth the time to dig into it a bit.
As for the attachments, I am still working my way through how to best use them, which are best for me, etc… but I generally have liked them all. I was a little familiar given my prior experience, and several of them seem “standard” in these devices, but Therabody hyped two new to them attachments, Micro-Point and Thumb, I think, and for me these were a bit of mixed bag. I very much like the Thumb, as it really “digs-in” and gets some of my trouble areas. The Micro-Point, honestly, I was really excited going in, but it just hasn’t done it for me. At least not yet. We shall see. Regardless, taken as a whole, it is a nice set of attachments that work well.
Battery. Given it is a device in 2022, we need to talk battery. Here, again, no issues. It really does well, not only in performance, but in implementation. For starters, I have more or less been getting the rated time. Beyond that, they made the great choice to use USB-C (and give you a cable and adapter). No random cable. I have other cables if need be. Charges fast. Perfect. The sooner everything is one cable, the better. Lastly, it has a removable batter. Now, I REALLY don’t think this will be issue, as you should get nearly 2 hours per charge, but it is great to have the option, the flexibility. As I write this, and it is on sale, the extra battery runs 38. That seems reasonable if for some reason you felt the need. Several people using it. Professional environment. Whatever.
Given how positively I view this, if I had one nitpick, and perhaps this a personal thing, I just do not love the case/bag/pouch situation. I guess it is easier to toss in a bag, on the go, maybe, but I would just much prefer a more dedicated case that had the unit and all the attachments together. Maybe I am in the minority here, but for a premium device it does not seem like a premium solution in this case. The quality if fine, to be clear, perhaps not the implementation. Just something to note.
Ultimately, I really like just about everything about this. Clearly, it is a premium-type device, but I think for the relief and quality of life improvements it gives me, the value is absolutely there, and it is worth it. I guess this is marketed as “Pro,” and I am not sure I know what that means in today’s world, but I think it could serve both the Pro and Novice, like me.

Great keyboard. Great trackpad. Great value.
on November 28, 2022
Posted by: skylog
This thing is well-built, looks good, protects my iPad and, most importantly for me, delivers a wonderful typing experience.
To start, I love the build (mostly). It is solid and it is built with purpose. It has a built-in stand that allows for variable angles, a pen loop for an Apple Pencil/Logi Crayon (although sometimes I wish it weren’t there as I don’t really use either right now) and uses Apple’s smart connector technology. That means no charging, no issues with connectivity and quick and easy attachment. All very, very convenient. It makes moving from one task to the next so easy. Type an email, detach, head to the couch, and put on a movie. Seamless. It also helps negate my one real “issue,” with the device, its weight (i do wish no software was needed but there are the times). It definitely has some weight, not so, so much, but it is one thing for some to consider when tossing in a bag or on the go. It is no real issue for me, as I think it helps the typing experience as well as the protection it offers, but it is a bit much when you just want to lay back, chill, and read something. With how easy it is to detach; you can just drop the keyboard and you are off. Not perfect, but good. Still seamless, but maybe just a little less weight would be nice. Lastly, I think it just looks nice. The exterior surface is some type of woven fabric that I think will hold up well and just looks good.
The keyboard is the best part for me. Sure, I like the protection the case provides, but this keyboard turns the iPad into such a better device for me. It’s a nice size, has great spacing, great variable backlighting, and is made from some materials that feel good on the palms. It is just great to type on. Beyond that, there is the “standard” type of OS shortcut function keys for things like volume, brightness…etc…The real bonus, and the thing that won me over for real, was the inclusion of a trackpad. It is a nice size and reacts well. It is not “mushy.” It also supports gesture controls. This combination of a great keyboard and a great trackpad has changed and enhanced how I use my iPad. I definitely still use it as a media consumption machine, but, now, I definitely tackle more productivity-type tasks as well. It is just so much easier and more pleasant to type away on this rather than on the screen itself. Perhaps it is the old in me talking here. The mouse and keyboard guy. Lastly, given all the ways Apple has been melding iPas OS and MacOS, it just enhances my ability to take advantage of those things. In the end, I was looking for a better typing and user experience, and this provides exactly that.
You’ll have to look at how you use your iPad and what you need from it. If all you do is watch movies, read books, etc... this may not? be for you. If you want to do that and just have a “laptop” to do some work on as well, you should take a look. As I mentioned earlier, there is some heft, and I wish it were a bit easier to get in and out of the case (but I guess that is the way it should be) but know that your iPad is protected when you are packing it, using it, or out and about with it. Know that it gives you an excellent typing experience. For everything that I mentioned, I think this is a great value. Full stop…but especially when you consider some of the “other” pricier options out there.

This a fairly straightforward device that does exactly as advertised. It does it well.
Install was a breeze, as was set-up. Download the app, connect the two, connect to Wi-Fi, and that is pretty much it. As for the physical install, about what you would expect, there are some mounting holes on the back (or Command strips if you choose). I opted for battery power, as I run a lot of stuff with rechargeable batteries, but you can use an USB cable as well (though I would think that would be somewhat inconvenient). The one advantage of using the USB cable is the device becomes a Hub for other Airthings devices. This is not me, yet, but something to note.
The device itself has a rather nice, simple, and clean design. Kind of like a pill-shaped smoke detector. It was a bit larger than I was expecting but finding a spot for it should not be an issue for most. While I like the design, and the e-ink screen (I think), a few color options would be great.
Once up and running, the device monitors radon of course, but also humidity and temperature. Given all of the time I have been spending at home over the past few years, will be in the future, and with winter approaching, i am glad to be able to keep tabs on this, even if it has been off my radar in the past. Being able to also have constant and accurate humidity and temperature data on hand is a nice add.
The unit started giving me data as soon as it was setup, although I have yet to reach the 7-day mark when the data is supposed to level in, and the device is fully calibrated to its location. I really like that the screen can be changed to display different data, and that you can also set up a simple air quality check with a hand wave and corresponding color code. That said, I think my favorite part of the whole setup is the app. It is simple to use, and you can monitor everything. The number geek in me loves that you can see numbers and graphs for all kinds of time periods. It is going to be easy to spot possible problems or just changes to keep an eye out for.
I don’t know, in the end, I like this device. It is a bit pricey, but it is well-designed, well-built, the app integration is fantastic, and I like the look. I trust the data it is presenting (and like the extra data), and I appreciate the piece of mind it provides.

Easy install. Great Camera / Software. Control.

To get it out of the way early, this is a fantastic system that does just about everything right. I could not be happier.
Set-up was very, very simple. You are walked through each step, and I had zero issues. A button press or two, some app navigation, and a scan, and that is pretty much it. Once the base is up, adding cameras is just a few more button presses in the app.
From there, the physical installation is more of the same. One of the main reasons I have put off cameras was “where to put them/how to put them/ how to power them.” Frankly, I was kind of blown away how eufy tackled all of these things with this setup. Given the wireless cams, I was able to get the placement I wanted with really no hassle at all. You get all of the necessary mounting parts and all it really took me was 4 screws. Once I mounted the two bases, you mount the cam “arms/adapters” I guess you could call them, and then you connect the cameras to them (there is a magnet system which can alert you to camera removal/theft). The adapters have ball mounts which allow you to get the exact view you want, which makes the whole process so easy. I can’t really get across how simple of a process all of this was.
My other previous concern was how to power any camera I was looking to use. I really did not want to run power or have wiring in my desired locations. Here, the cameras are rated to have not only batteries that last a year on their own (they are bit large), BUT, they also have active solar panels on them that are suggested to need only 2 hours of direct sunlight a day to essentially “run forever.” Now, while early results suggest this seems to be a valid claim, I will need to see how this holds over time. Regardless, the long run battery and solar panels are features that I really appreciate.
As are the inclusion of a spotlight, alarm (it can get pretty loud), and two-way audio (it works rather well). Simple, but great adds that really round out the security “package” being offered here.
As great as the set-up/install was, the cameras themselves were just as good if not better. The cameras output great video. It is crisp, detailed, and bright. Day or night. I did not expect such nice footage from the night capture but was very pleased since that was what I was mostly looking for.
The picture is fantastic, but I think what really allows this system to shine is the software and its integration of the hardware with the eufy app. There are loads of settings to allow you to dial everything in just the way you want it. Zones. Movement. Alerts. Face set-up/detection. Car detection. Pet detection. You can get as many or as few alerts as you want (they are very timely). Generally speaking, errors are few and far between, and the software really shines. The app is simple to use, built well, gives you great control and insight, and gives you the entire system at your fingertips.
While ALL of what I have already stated are reasons to like this system, perhaps the biggest (for me at least), is that you can do all of this without being on a “plan.” Yes, you can get some added cloud benefits for a price, but you can use this system and get all of the utility as is, out of the box. Further, while it is not “needed,” you can (and I did) add an additional hard drive to the base unit to give you all the storage, more or less, you could ever want. It is becoming harder and harder these days to find such things, and it is a refreshing change.
Ultimately, as I said, I really could not be happier with this system. Easy set-up. Easy install. Great cameras. Great software. Feature-rich. Control, with no subscription needed. I think my only “complaint” is I want a couple of more cameras.

Great Camera. Best Android. Smartest Smart Phone.

I have been a Pixel user and in the Google ecosystem for some time, and I have used them all, but this is the best Pixel yet. It is a great phone and an even better value.
If you were a Pixel 6 user, the 7 should have a familiar look. It is more or less the same design, but refined, improved. The front is basically the same, with a few minor improvements, and the power and volume buttons have lowered ever so slightly. The main difference is in the “camera bar” on the back of the phone. It has been very slightly lowered and is all one piece of aluminum. I really like this change. Not only does it seem better structurally, but also cosmetically. As for looks, I really like what they did here. As mentioned, the camera bar was the biggest change, but it just looks good. While I would have preferred a matte finish on both the phone and the cam bar, and a blacked out black, I do like the contrast between the black and silver (the Hazel they offer in the Pro model is also fantastic). Bezels are small, the front camera is small, the buttons are clicky, all in all, no complaints here. It looks good, feels well built, good in the hand, and some thought was put into the materials.
As for the phone, yes, the phone, I know it is a seemingly forgotten part of the device these days, but Google killed it here. Calls are clear, it tosses spam calls, screens call for you, and offers a feature called “direct my call” which automatically brings up menus on the screen for you when you call 1-800 or business numbers. This is a ridiculously helpful feature for me, as are the others. Frankly, I think this is where this phone and Google’s approach is so great. The software itself, and the integration with the phone is just so helpful. So smart. I think it is the smartest smart phone out there.
Building on that thought, that is what the new G2 chip in this phone is all about, helping faster. There are too many things to list, but Google Assistant, to me the hand down best digital assistant. The speech to text, again, hands down the best. The transcribing of calls (or simply using the voice recorder) using that speech to text is so quick and accurate, is seems like voodoo. It is the same with translation. The phone is full of these little things that are there and pop up to help you with everyday things.
The camera system, simply, is one of the best you will find. In many ways, I feel it is the best. While the primary lens is the same that was in the Pixel 6, there are new wider ultrawide and 5X 48-megapixel telephoto lenses. Great for some macro and zoom shots. Pictures that come out of the phone are detailed, crisp, and with accurate and true to life, yet vivid colors. You can more or less point and shoot and get these results. I can trust this camera. That said, there are loads of settings and modes you can tweak to dials things more to your liking if you find a need. Night Sight and Astrophotography are two of my favorite things to mess with and they are improved here not only in quality but also in speed (due to that improved G2 chip). These may be niche cases for some or most, but they are really worth a look. Further, the Pixel offers a few software tools to play with in the camera that you should be sure to check out. Long Exposure and Action Pan let you add some “movement” to your pics, while Magic Eraser helps you take things out of pictures (random guy, wire, trash can, etc…). Honestly, I was pretty impressed with how well the eraser works. Not perfect, but great for a quick edit. There is also Photo Unblur, which, as you guessed, allows you to take any photo and try to fix the blurriness. It is a bit of a mixed bag, as it won’t fix all pics, but it absolutely will help some. Some wild stuff. Again, a lot of this may be small use case, but across the board the camera outputs great pictures. I could not be happier with the results.
Video, which has always struggled a bit with Pixels, is markedly improved. It is still a tick behind the iPhone, but it is much better than in the past and I think more than good enough to no longer be an “issue.” There are few extra software modes to play with here as well, but truthfully, I do not think they do a great job. Yet. Hopefully, they can be improved.
Speakers? They are good. Really not much to say here. They get fairly loud, don’t really distort, and sound good. That about sums it up.
The screen is rather nice. Bright. Vibrant. High resolution. High refresh (that cycles down when it makes sense to save battery). There is a very slight taper to the glass as you approach the edges of the screen, which is one of the few things I don’t truly love about this phone. I would absolutely prefer if they eliminated this “feature.” Regardless, the screen is great and no real complaints from me. I should note, the fingerprint reader, which is under screen, has worked very well for me. This was a bit of a problem with the Pixel 6 early on, but gladly, not here. I guess I should also note that they brought back face unlock as well if you want to go that route.
Battery life so far has been great and much improved over the 6 Pro. I have skipped Adaptive Charging and Adaptive Battery, which would probably give even better results, but this is an “all day battery” for me. Of course, it will depend on use case, but I don’t think it should be an issue for most. If I had one nitpick, it would have to be the continued passing on super-fast charging being offered. Capping the charging at 30W (really 23W), I am sure has some reasons, but with so many other phones offering much, much, faster charging, at least a modest bump would have been nice.
One of the reasons I prefer Pixel over other devices is you get pure Android, straight from Google. No software bloat. No skins. Features come first, some of them exclusive. Updates come fast. They will come for years. It is the best Google Assistant experience. Lastly, it is hands down the best Android experience and the best integration between software and hardware.
Ultimately, as you can tell, I really like this phone. It is well built, feature-rich, runs pure Android, can get better with time, and is so tightly woven into the growing Google ecosystem. I think when you take all of that into account, and look at the price, it is a ridiculously good value.
