Good Cameras. Good Value. Some concerns…?
on November 21, 2023
Posted by: skylog
As a whole, I do like these cameras and this system. I think they can work for most people and their needs. There is quite a bit to like here, but there is a thing or two that I wish were different or maybe could be done better.
Set-up for me was a simple process. Just be sure to charge everything beforehand. It is more or less just follow some steps and you will be good. No issues for me. Installation though? Well, that was a bit of a mixed bag. While this will probably be dependent on your situation and where you are installing them, I just do not love the mounting options. I should say, more specifically, I wish the mounts offered a little flexibility. The hardware works, and is not bad to install, at all, but you really need to have your lines perfect as there is not a lot of range to move or change the angle of the cameras. It just made what could have been the perfect install, just a little worse. Also, it kind of limits any changes you may want to make down the road. Or at least makes them more difficult. Again, that may not be your experience, but just something to note.
As for the cameras themselves, they give a detailed, nice, and clear picture (with zoom). Day or night (in color). They also come with quite a few options, which is always nice to see. Same with the app and operation. Two-way audio. Motion detection (very quick). Deterrence features (spotlight and siren). Alerts. Notifications. All of these things work well and are very welcome. The app, frankly, is not the best, but it is “good” and gives you what you need. I just wish there was a little more integration with other platforms, but notifications are very quick. Given that, I can live with some limitations and hope for the best going forward.
Build-wise, obviously, time will tell. That said, I think everything should last. Everything is well-built and I think it will hold up. Again, it is going to have to be a wait and see thing. We shall see. I know this is the nature of the product, and on some level why the installation was so quick, but I am a little hesitant about the batteries. To be clear, in the limited time I have had them installed, the battery-life has been good, and they are rated for several months, but I am just not sure how I feel about removing them, charging them, etc…Again, I knew this going in, but I will have to see how my usage does with the batteries. If they perform well, but the batteries turn out to be an issue I may explore wiring them. Of course, this too is a wait and see kind of thing.
For all that I like about these cameras, and despite some of my minor concerns that I touched upon to this point, my main “problem,” if you want to call it that, is the reliance on a subscription to truly unlock all that this system can do. To be clear, the cameras do work, and can work for a lot of people without it, but you kind of only get the most basic features. There is no recording, zones, or differentiated detection. It is a bit of a letdown. That said though, honestly, the sub costs are quite reasonable, and for most people are probably worth it. I just wish they offered a little bit more without the need for the sub, as they did with prior products (some I still have).
Ultimately, this is a good system, the cameras are solidly built, and they work very well. I think, as is, they are a good value. I would suggest really know your use case and what you want out of a system like this and if you are willing to pay for a subscription to get it (or want local or cloud storage).
I would recommend this to a friend!

Total Package. Great Build. Options. Nice Software
on November 21, 2023
Posted by: skylog
To get it out of the way early, this is a great keyboard.
It has a great build that is solid, metal (top), and with some nice weight behind it (but by no means heavy), but also a bit compact at the same time. Thank you Tenkeyless (at least for gaming). Also thank you for keeping the function row…and for providing media, volume, and button/macro controls. Nice adds. I love the looks, which for me says something as I often find many gaming keyboards a bit much for my tastes. Plain. Black. Clean. Simple. Perfect for me. This one is also a bit specific, but I also like the font choice on the keys. Again, often it is awful (for me at least). The included wrist wrest is functional, does help, attaches wonderfully (and securely), but I honestly just don’t like the faux leather look of it. Minor thing, just something to note.
As for the keys themselves, I found them very responsive. Crisp. Comfortable. Great to use. As is. That said, it really is worth the time to dive into the software and dial in your settings for what you like and how you like to play. Being able to adjust the actuation setting was really wild. As this was somewhat new to me, it did take a bit to get used to it, but I think it is one of those things you absolutely get better as you use it. Same with rapid trigger. The crazy part, to me, is that you can save settings to the keyboard and make changes on the fly. You can also adjust single keys. Just some great customization options.
Even though I am not a “huge” RGB guy, Razer does a great job with it. It is bright, very customizable, and is very consistent across all their products. You can use response, generic, standard, or customizable patterns. All in all, about what you would expect.
Just a quick note, as I have been on wireless keyboards for a bit now, but I appreciate the wired aspect here. Obviously, better for gaming, but also, zero battery concerns. It is just kind of nice. Also, the supplied USB-C cable is a nice, braided design with enough length for it not to be an issue.
In the end, this is a great keyboard for gaming (“normal” typing is good too) and I really like it. It has a solid build, a nice feature-set, is comfortable, and has a high level of customization. It’s also just fun to use.

Premium. Powerful. Versatile. Value?
on November 7, 2023
Posted by: skylog
This machine tries to be many things, and it mostly succeeds at all of them, but for all they did right, I do think they missed on some things. To be clear, this is a fantastic device, with good performance, nearly unmatched versatility, and a very nice build. I just think there are some questions regarding component selection and value.
Pros:
Versatility. I feel it is almost unmatched with the several modes offered. Done very well
Build. Very solid in nearly every regard (ports, hinges, screen, keyboard)
Performance. While I have an issue or two, all in all, it is good
Keyboard. Great to use. Comfortable
Touchpad. “Just about” the best one out there. Great size
Display. Not the brightest, but it does look fantastic. Accurate
Touchscreen. Responsive and accurate
Dedicated GPU. Nice to have the power to do some things when needed. Also game
Cons:
Size and Weight. I guess this is the cost of versatility. It is just a little heavy
Bezels. Again, I guess this is part of the modes offered. It looks dated
Battery-life. Perhaps my experience, but other than basic tasks, I can’t hit the rated times
SSD. Fine, but they really could have gone for more speed
Ports. I would love to see to see some more. Also, why micro on the SD?
Display. For the class of laptop I would have liked to see more
Pen. I just think it was a miss on a premium device to not include it
Value. This is the biggest one for me and I will expand below
As I said above, there is no doubt this a powerful machine. A versatile machine. In many ways a premium machine. It succeeds in many ways. For many, many people, probably most, this will work. It will work well. I just feel there is a question of value. For those who want to pay for the versatility of the modes offered, then I say go for it. I just feel for the class this laptop is in, the screen could be a little better, the SSD could be a little better, the pen should have been included, maybe they could have waited for the next gen of chips…I don’t know, I just think for the class it is in, and what is being asked, it could be better…even with all they did right. I would still recommend this machine, but only for those who want the versatility, have a specific need, or at a different price point.

Very pleasantly surprised. Check your use case.

Admittedly, I was a little hesitant about these going in, but after some time spent with them, I can say that I really like them. I really wasn’t expecting that and, honestly, I was a little surprised.
From the get-go, it is clear they are a pair of Ray-Bans. They have the styling, build, looks, all of it. They are probably a tad bit heavier, but if so, not by much. Save the camera lens and few minor differences, you really can’t tell. My version has the polarized green tint, but it is my understanding there are different lens options, including plain clean prescription (as well as another style). The build is fantastic and what you would expect from Ray-Ban. Solid, feel good in the hand, great hinge movement, and perhaps most importantly, at least for me, comfortable. They also included a nice, high-quality hard case. Again, what you would expect, but in this…case, it is also the charger for the sunglasses. Due to this, it does have a little more weight than you might expect. Nothing crazy, but something to note. Thankfully, it is USB-C, charges quickly, and provides “up to 36 hours of charge time per fully charged portable case.” I will comment on the battery a little later. All in all, I like the hardware here.
Setup is, well, quite easy. Download an app, follow some instructions, update and you are good to go. I was a little hesitant going in, given they are Meta branded, and while I do not really use my Facebook account, I was not sure I wanted to tie that to any hardware. Thankfully, they offer another option. Further, they have a nice set of privacy options that give you a little more control.
As for using the glasses themselves, again, it is all pretty simple to pick up and get used to. To be honest, I am kind of floored with all that these can do. I suppose most people will gravitate towards the camera for picture and video use. That is kind of what I thought I would be most drawn to going in as well, and while I am, I really like what they have done with audio, calls, and the assistant. The audio is, well, “good,” and I would say adequate for those that just want some music. I think it is great for someone listening to podcasts and perhaps not looking for an audiophile level experience. Beyond that, though, I found that calls were fantastic, on both ends, and a convenience I had not even thought of. I am also not a huge user of assistants, but they have their place, and I found their version quite good. A nice add. As for pictures and video? I think the video is quite good for what it is but do note that if you are not live streaming (to Meta properties of course), the video is limited to 15, 30, or 60 second clips. As for stills, I did come away somewhat impressed. While your phone will undoubtedly take superior pictures, I would say these are more than fine to share to social media, friends, and stuff like that. Add in that you can be getting some unique content that you may otherwise not even be getting, it seems a worthwhile tradeoff. Again, as a whole, I think they did a nice job here.
Ultimately, I do like these glasses. My experience has mostly been very good. Battery-life has been…”good.” If you are doing heavy picture and video stuff and consistently listening to music, it does drain fairly quickly. Otherwise though, they do last fairly long. I am still trying to see the times there. Another quirk is that the camera lens is a little left leaning, so you need to keep that in mind as you snap or record. Just something to note. I have found the controls easy to use as well as responsive, although voice has been slightly touchy. That could be more of a me problem though. All of that said, however, I have found them fun (and easy) to use, the quality rather good, and I think they are a great value. When you factor the price of Ray-Bans separately, and think about all the other adds, I think it works out. I am never one to buy something on future promises, but Meta has said they will be adding some visual features to these in the coming year that will use the cameras to identify things. That seems exciting, but I guess we will have to see. Anyway, I always say check your use case, but if yours fits, these may be worth a look.

Great Camera. Refined. Best Android Experience.
on October 17, 2023
Posted by: skylog
I have been in the Google ecosystem for many years and been a Pixel user since the…Nexus days. I don’t think it is a reach in any way to say this is the best Pixel to date.
Hardware/Design: If you are familiar with the Pixel 7, it is more or less the same, but refined and improved. Everything is just a little “cleaner.” Smaller bezels, slightly more rounder corners, a tighter camera bar, better materials. I would say, just better looking and put together. There are some really nice color choices as well, although I still wish they “blacked-out” the Obsidian color with a black camera bar. Additionally, I do also wish they gave the Standard versions of the phone the matte treatment the Pro versions received.
The display is also improved, and quite good. High refresh rate. Crispy. Very bright. Specs are specs, but in the day to day, it just means everything flows very smoothly, and it is great to use inside or out.
Lastly, the rest of the internals are more or less what one would expect. Decent RAM numbers, various storage options, and the latest Tensor 3 chip. I will have to see how the Tensor does over time, but all in all I really like what they have done with the looks and specs of this phone.
Camera: For many people, this is among the most important aspects of a phone these days, and quite honestly, I am one of them. Over the years, the Pixels have had a great camera, the best for some time, and while competitors have more or less gotten just as good, I do still think this may be the best camera system out there. The camera, as is, simply outputs detailed and crisp pictures, with accurate and true to life, yet vivid colors. Beyond that, there are so many settings and modes that you can use not only to tweak and dial things to your liking, but also to capture just about anything you may want to. Then, when you have the picture, there are seemingly even more tools to edit and transform your pic to the final look you want to achieve. If you enjoy photography, or just taking fun pictures on a whim, I don’t think you would be disappointed here.
Video, is once again, improved. More stable and generally just “better.” While I do think they still lag behind the competition here, the quality is still good, and it is nice to see continued improvement. There are some nice tools to play with here as well.
Sound: It is quite good. I would say a marked improvement over the Pixel 7.
Battery: I can’t give a long-term comment here, but so far, it is as expected, and I do not think it will be an issue. I know this comes down to how you use your phone, but I have been making it through all day with ease (as I did with the 7) and I have stayed away from Adaptive Battery, Charging, Saver and all of the options there (as I always have). I am sure they are effective, and would help, but as is I am happy with the battery, and it is a non-issue for me. The slightly faster charging is appreciated, but I would still like to see even a modest bump as some others have had for some time.
Software: This is a BIG one for me. On a macro level, I just like that I get pure Android, from Google. Less bloat. Less extra apps. Features come first, some exclusive to the line. Updates come. Apparently now, they will come for 7 years. Frankly, that is wild. While I can not imagine “many” people will be using this phone in 2030, just to know that on some level one could gives a nice peace of mind.

Beyond that though, the software just makes the phone good/fun/helpful to use. Google Assistant is easily the best out there. Translation. Dictation. Customization. Always on Display. Spam Detection. Call Assist/Screening. Endless Camera Tweaks. Face Unlock. These are just some of the things I use very often and now Google is expanding this list even further with some AI tools they are adding. Over time this list will grow and only be further refined. Simply, for me, it is just the best Android experience and the best integration between software and hardware on the platform.
Ecosystem: Lastly, and it has taken seemingly forever, but this phone fits in very well to the larger Google ecosystem. You can pair it with some great buds, a watch that I am admittedly unsure of, and quite a bit of other hardware in the home. As a whole, it all works great together, and I think where one gets the most benefit out of the phone.
Ultimately, as is probably pretty obvious, I really like this phone. It comes with so much, looks good, is well built, runs pure Android and fits so well into the Google ecosystem. You get all of that for an extremely fair price, and honestly, I think it is a great value.
My only REAL wish is that Google offered the Standard and Pro versions of this phone is both the smaller and larger sizes. Maybe one day…

Fast, Quality Scans. Small. Convenient.
on October 12, 2023
Posted by: skylog
This really is a nice machine. It is well-built, takes up minimal desk space, and very quickly produces quality scans.
Beyond what I said above, it can output loads of data more or less to anywhere or in any way you may need. Be it CSV, Excel, various financial software suites, to the cloud, or more simply just a PDF.
As someone who has generally been using a flatbed scanner for many years, I was kind of floored by how convenient it was to be able to batch scan quite a few documents at one time. Same for two-sided documents. To be clear, most of my work has been with papers (of various sizes), with only a receipt here and there, but at least to this point, I have had no issues with jamming, stuck paper, or anything like that. I was not expecting that going in. Nor was I expecting just how quickly it would scan. It is…fast.
That said, while I love everything I mentioned above, I have found a lot of the software, and it seems there is a lot of it, to be a bit…”clunky” if that makes sense. Honestly, it just seems to be the case with most scanning/printing software, so not a big dig here, just something to note.
Lastly, given my limited space, and my current layout, I do really appreciate the ability to use this wirelessly. Given prior experience with my flatbed, I did my initial setup wired, but have been running wirelessly ever since without issue. This is a real value add for me.
Ultimately, I really do like this scanner. As I said it my opening, it more or less hits on everything I need, and I couldn’t be happier. The value is there for me. You’ll have to check your use case to see how it fits for you, but it is a quality machine and I think it delivers on what it promises.

Effective, Easy, and Affordable…with some caveats
on October 11, 2023
Posted by: skylog
To be straight and to the point, I do like this system. They did quite a bit right here, but there are also a few things that I think could be improved.
Everything included is nicely built, fairly compact, and well thought out (mostly, but more on that later). Initial setup for me was an easy process and I had zero issues. It was fairly straightforward, and more or less a matter of getting connected and following instructions. I feel most would have a similar experience.
Similarly, using the entire system is more of the same. Just simple. The keypad sensor hub is easy to understand with a clear interface that most will just instinctively pick up. Same with the all-in-one sensors and their deployment. Arlo gives you everything you need to place the sensors where you would like, with a variety of mounting options. That said, I do really wish there was an included better way to place/mount the keypad itself. I think it would work great wall mounted, but it is wired, and, frankly, it is just not a very clean look. I guess, as is, it works best as placed on a flat surface. I just think that is a miss here.
As for the sensors themselves, I think this is where Arlo absolutely excels. They seemingly do everything. Detect motion, open/close, water leak and freeze, smoke/CO alarm detection, and tilt or ambient light change detection. Beyond that the Hub itself also does motion and smoke/CO alarm listening. I am not up on home monitoring, but I was blown away that these things can do all of that. That said, I JUST WISH THERE WERE MORE INCLUDED. I guess this comes down to a cost issue, but I just feel people will want/need more of these things. I know I did. Especially given that they worked as advertised, and very well.
Another thing Arlo got right was their app. It has a clean interface, that is both well-designed and intuitive. It gives you a nice level of control over the system, as well as providing all the data you might need from a security perspective.
All in all, I am happy with this system, and I think it delivers on what is promises and performs well. It offers flexibility, reliability, and ease of use. As is, I think it is a “good” value, although I really wish it included some more sensors (you CAN purchase more individually). Further, while I feel the 24/7 professional monitoring options are “fairly priced,” it was just not something I was interested in. Lastly, I can’t help but feel that this would work even better if you also had more Arlo components as part of a larger system…

Quality construction, performs well, reliable.
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: skylog
With so many devices these days, I can never have enough cables. This one has a solid build with connectors that I think will hold up over time. The braiding is welcome, and again, is done well. It has a nice feel that is not too stiff, but also comes with the right amount of protection. It can easily be rolled and stowed away when not in use.
As for performance, I have no complaints. It charges as it should, and the connectors (with the solid build I mentioned earlier) insert easily, stay connected, and easily fit with my current case.
There is not much else to say. I like this cable and it works for me. I think most would feel the same.
Time will tell as to durability and how it holds up but based on what I have seen to this point, I do not think that will ever be an issue. Depending on your needs, be sure to check which length is best for you, but I really like the 7-foot version for my uses. It gives me some flexibility when charging as well as the option to use my devices when they are connected.

Quality Hardware and Experience. Ridiculous Value.
on September 7, 2023
Posted by: skylog
To get it out of the way, I really like this keyboard. Thin, compact, light, and a surprising solid feel. I like the looks, although, admittedly, I am still slowly coming over to the round keys. I like the color choices and it is all done well. I don’t have the most desk space, and it always ends up being a mess. Small footprint. No wires. Both wins for me.
Setup was very simple, and I have zero issues with connectivity. Rock solid. Seamless transitions across devices. I am not sure how many people will take advantage of the switching feature, but as someone who uses Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, across far too many devices, I am not sure if I can really get across how awesome this has been for me.
As for the keyboard itself, and how it is to use. In a couple of words, it is great. As I said earlier, I am still not sure how I feel about the “looks” of the round keys, but the whole thing is great to type on and use. I like the feel and spacing, and I think the keys have the right amount of give. Beyond that though, the function keys give a lot of…functionality, and the Logitech software, which might just be the sneaky hero here, opens up even so much more. It is absolutely worth the time to dig in and explore what you can do. All in all, it is just a great keyboard to use.
Battery life, well, has been all I could ask for. It is “rated” as “hours of use with a 3-year battery.” I can’t really say how that will go or what that means, but from what I am seeing I do not think it will be an issue at all going forward.
Ultimately, I like this keyboard. It hits on so many things, but it just really comes down to being a good, solid keyboard that is nice to use. To get all that you get here, at this price, is, frankly, a ridiculous value to me.

For me personally, one of the main benefits of owning a Tesla is the charging network. When I need to take a trip, I can be pretty confident I will be able to find one on my route. That said, there are sometimes gaps, as few as they may be. The bigger issue for me is that in my immediate area, there is only one Tesla charging station…and it is not really one I can conveniently or routinely utilize. So, while I do mostly prefer to charge at home, I absolutely use other networks that are a little more accessible in my area. For both of these scenarios, although more so the latter, this little adapter has been a very welcome surprise.
As for the adapter itself, it is well-built, solid, feels good in the hand, and, surprisingly, not really that large. I really like the fact that it is small enough to easily put away and not take up much space. In use, I really had no issues and it worked exactly as advertised. Nothing got abnormally warm, and I had no connection issues. It is a bit tight, but I suspect this will lessen with more regular use.
Ultimately, I like this adapter. It serves a very specific purpose that I need, it works well, it is well-built and should hold up over time. Further, anything that gives me options, and a little peace of mind, is something I appreciate. Getting all of that for a very reasonable price is great value. Hopefully, in the coming years, everything will all be on the same standard, but until then, this is a great option.
