Quality + Performance. Great Vacuum...at a Price
on June 16, 2023
Posted by: skylog
To get it out of the way right from the start, this is a ridiculously fantastic vacuum. Full stop. It is very powerful, it is designed and built very well, it has more than sufficient battery life, and I am nothing but pleased with its performance. There are some details to get into, and some thoughts about use case, cost, and value, but it simply is a great vacuum.
I have some experience with Dyson products generally, and a little with vacuums as well, so I expected a high level of build quality and a thoughtful design. Largely, that is here. It is just built well, and “feels good” to handle as well as use. There is a little weight to it (but it is not “heavy”), and while I guess some may not like that, I think it sort of makes it easier to handle and maneuver as a whole. It comes with a decent warranty (2 years) and great support (lifetime), but, honestly, I don’t think most will have any “typical” issues.
Beyond that, however, are the details. Conversion to handheld is easy. There is a nice selection of accessories that cover all of my needs (more on that later). There is an actual power button (and it is in a convenient location). I am sure this sounds like a strange positive, but Dyson has been a firm believer in the “trigger” system, which, frankly, is something I never have liked. I am sure there are many that like it, and will miss it, but not me. I think this is a great change. Switching surfaces is a non-issue.
Digging deeper is all the tech as well as performance. One of the neatest things for me is the “Fluffy Optic” cleaner (I really do not understand the name) which is a laser/light which really does highlight and show you dust you may not have even realized was there. Given my nature this is kind of a good thing and kind of a bad thing, as you really do not grasp how much dust is around and how quickly it reappears. Be warned lol. I think the “coolest” thing for me is simply the LCD screen. As a numbers person, this got me. I know it is only vacuuming, but showing active live data on what is being picked up does let me be more efficient and, to me at least, it is just cool. Beyond that though, it also shows the mode you are in, how much time you have left on the charge, and any maintenance issues you may have.
ALLLL of that is great, but it is how all of that comes together in performance that is most important to me. It is extremely powerful, the filtration is rated top of class, and all the active data it takes in can actually adjust the power for debris and floor type. Now my space is not the largest, but I do have multiple floor types and this vacuum has EASILY done the best job I have ever gotten from a vacuum. I feel as if my floors and carpet are actually getting cleaner than they were previously. It is also just a little bit more fun to do. Given my space, battery life is not an issue for me, as I can easily do all I need to without a recharge, but given the rated time, I “think” most would be ok. Keep in mind though, that mode used, surface, etc…will alter the time available.
As a whole, I could not really be much happier with this vacuum. The charging is a little slow, which honestly to me is not really a bad thing. One, for my needs it is not an issue, two, once I am done vacuuming, I typically do not need it again for a fair amount of time. Just something to note. Also, I do not love the mount. It works, I just wish it were a bit “more” given everything. Lastly, and while this not an issue specific to me, all the accessories are fantastic, but if you have some from previous models, they will not work with this newer vacuum. Not sure if this was done intentionally or not, but it is a bit of a letdown, and again, something to note.
All of that said, I really do like this vacuum. A lot. It does everything I need and want it to do, and it does it very well. It is easy to use, and I think even a little fun. The quality is there, and I think it will last for quite some time. While I do have a few minor nitpicks here and there, they really are minor and don’t really detract from how I feel overall. Of course, given the cost, I think people really need to look at their use and needs, but if the fit is there, I don’t think people will be disappointed.

Very Fast. Rock Solid. Total Coverage. FutureProof
on June 7, 2023
Posted by: skylog
Briefly, I got this up and running, and, frankly, I am kind of floored. Yes, there is a price involved, but I can’t imagine needing more. Now, or for some time.
Out of the box, the three nodes are identical. This is just one way in which I found setup to be very simple. The app more or less just walks you through the entire process. I understand some may want some hard copy documentation, but I don’t really think it is needed. To sum up, you just need to connect one unit to your modem as the primary and the other units can be placed to create your mesh setup. I suspect most will use these wirelessly, but I went all ethernet cabling for my needs. Each unit has ample WAN/LAN connections, as well as a USB 3 for adding devices. I am sure some niche setups may require more, but I think just about everyone should be covered here. I also think most will be up and running in a very short amount of time.
As for the nodes themselves, they are a bit large, but nothing crazy, and they have the requisite LED lights to display their status. They can’t be dimmed, so keep that in mind for placement. Also, while I guess the white styling should fit in better in most households, frankly, I do not really like the look of them. I know they can more or less be hidden away, but just something to note. I know this is a personal taste thing, so take it for what you will, but it is probably the only thing I really do not like about this system.
Performance-wise? Just kind of WOW. On all fronts. Now, admittedly, my space is not that large, and taken as a whole, this system is perhaps overkill for me right now, but I have complete coverage. I mean complete. I can even venture a fair amount outside my home and still get good speeds. I know this will vary due to many factors, but at least based on my experience, I really can’t see this being an issue. Beyond that, I guess it should go without saying, but it has also been rock-solid so far. I do not have the most devices connected at all times, but it is easily in the 40s, and I have yet to have a problem with anything dropping. This is a nice change, as I did have some minor issues with my old setup. Lastly, my speeds have been just fantastic. Easily better than previously, and just about all I can get with my current ISP plan. Where I would definitely see quite a bit of variation on my old equipment, I just really did not see much with this setup, which I love. I am quite happy with how everything is running. So much so, I am looking into upping my plan to get some better speeds.
Ultimately, this is just a great system. No doubt, this is premium equipment, with a premium price, and maybe it is overkill for some, but there is no denying the results. Insane coverage, reliable, robust enough for many devices, and very, very fast speeds. Given all the tech here, some that will not even come into play for some time to come (WiFi 7), I think this is a system that could be used for many, many years. For all you get, with some futureproofing, if your use case calls for it, I think nearly everyone would be pleased with this setup.

All Around Performer. Versatile. Great Value.
on June 6, 2023
Posted by: skylog
This desktop more or less does it all out of the box. It is pretty solidly spec’d and I would say has most people covered no matter what they are looking to do. Office/productivity, picture/video, gaming, etc…it handles it all with relative ease.
Dell has been doing this for seemingly ever, so, as expected, setup was a breeze. Everything was packaged well, and in a manner that it was easy to get it all together rather quickly. Once connected, it was typical software and Windows updates, but all in all, a very, very simple process. I expect this will be the case for everyone.
As for looks, I really kind of like the case. Plain. Simple. Clean. Black. More Black. Some may find it lacking, but for me it is perfect. I am not into the gaming aesthetic, and while a little style here and there could have been added, I like it as is. It is well built, solid, and has a good feel. It has some weight, but it is by no means heavy. It also comes with some great front I/O (mix of USB A, C, card reader, headphone) that is a nice add. Lastly, I really like the fact that it comes with some room for expansion/upgradeability. While there are some proprietary issues here, and some frustrating choices (the PSU wattage as well as the number of RAM slots), simply being to add to and/or change components over time is one of the main benefits of owning a desktop…and one that allows it. You get a little future proofing, as well as just, well, options. Something that seems to be harder and harder to find these days. I would say my only real dig here is that the case is not the quietest case out there. It is not “loud,” but I found when pushed, it was more than silent. Just something to note.
Performance-wise, I really could not be happier. The chip/RAM/drive/GPU stack really does well. Everything runs smoothly, I can multitask without issue, boot and application load times are snappy, and I am quite pleased with the gaming experience. Clearly, the GPU has limitations, but that should be understood here. That said, on the proper resolution, games still fly and look great. Beyond just performance, I love that they provided both a M.2 SSD (as well as another empty slot) AND a standard higher capacity hard drive (and another empty bay). It really is the best of both worlds. A dedicated spot for installs, and one for storage. At least that is how I am running it. You just don’t see that offered all the time. Lastly, there is a nice blend of connectivity. Between the front I/O, and all that located on the back, I have to think most would not have an issue. Honestly, I think it is all just some solid hardware. Well, mostly all lol. Perhaps it is the computer snob in me, but you may want to upgrade the keyboard and mouse. Another thing to note.
In the end, I have to say that I really like this machine. If you are looking for a strictly gaming PC, perhaps you should look elsewhere. Furthermore, know your use case beforehand, and understand its limitations, but I think this is a fantastic choice for just about everyone looking for a well-rounded, powerful system that should meet most people's needs. It looks good, is built well, has some nice specs, and has some room for upgrades and/or expansion. I think the value is there.

Great Specs. Delivers. “Mobile” Desktop?”
on May 30, 2023
Posted by: skylog
I have to start by just saying this thing is hands down the most powerful laptop I have ever used. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but to keep it short, I was very impressed by how well-specd this machine was and how it performed.
I really like the design and look that Asus went with here. Clearly, it has a “gamer” look to it, but not overly so, and it is mostly done in a tasteful way. I know some may want more, but I like the more subdued (plain) approach. As for the build, just solid. It feels good in the hand, and there is some weight to it. That said, YES, it does have some weight, but to be honest, I was expecting more. Is it an ultralight? NO, it is a gaming machine, but I think they did a very good job distributing that weight (it’s balanced) and making the machine rather thin. For what it is, I think very thin. The screen is big, there is some weight, and the power brick is…large, but you can take it with you. Not quite as easy as tossing it in a bag and going, but that is not really why you buy this machine.
The display is one reason you buy this machine, and I came away very pleased. Big. It is big. Beyond that though, it is good. Very good. Fast refresh. QHD, so no 4K, which some may want, but I think it works here. Admittedly, it is not the brightest panel, but colors are bright, vivid, seemingly quite accurate, and everything just runs very smoothly.
As for performance, I don’t think I could be much happier. More or less, it comes with best-in-class hardware. A top Intel chip, a top Nvidia GPU, Gen 4 SSD, and 16GB of DDR5 4800 RAM, etc. Gaming, well, it rips. Obviously, it is game dependent, settings dependent, etc. but running nearly everything near or flat out maxed out, my FPS were 144 or higher (mostly a bit higher) across the board. To this point, there really has been no stuttering, tearing, anything. Coming from an “older” desktop, this is something I really wasn’t expecting, even knowing what the laptop was running. Beyond gaming, I do some photo/video editing, and a whole bunch of “life stuff” on my machines, and here it is more of the same. I am just very impressed with the power of the machine.
Beyond the internals, they also did a solid job with connectivity. There is a nice selection of ports that hits most, if not all, that people will be looking for. The speakers are quite good. Loud, and good sound (more on that later). The keyboard somewhat surprised me. In a good way. I like the spacing, it is solid (no real flex), and has a nice feel. I was initially worried everything would be tight, but that has not been the case, and, while I am probably alone on this, I love the addition of the number pad. Helps with the “life stuff.” It’s a nice add. As I mentioned above, I like plain a lot, so as you can imagine, the RGB aspect of the keyboard is not really my thing, but they really give you some nice lighting options/control. It is done very, very well, and honestly, it looks great. They may win me over lol (you can also just turn it off). As for the trackpad, it is good. Not the largest, kind of standard, and it is offset to hit the middle of the keyboard minus the number pad. Again, seems standard. Not the best, but certainly not an issue.
There are many things that I like about this laptop, but that does not mean I do not have a few nitpicks. One, and this is definitely a nitpick, I just do not really like the webcam. I do not like how it is not flush with the screen. Seems an odd design choice. Beyond that, 720p, which is just what manufacturers seem to do. I simply do not understand this move. Two, when you are pushing the machine, the fans do get humming. Again, this is understood, given the power of the machine, but depending, a move to headphones is sometimes a better choice. Seemingly, they do a great job of cooling, so that is preferred, and you do get a nice degree of control here, but maybe this is just me not being familiar with such a laptop. Three, the power brick is quite big, and it seems to get quite hot. Again, this is just the nature of the beast, I guess, but something to note. Lastly, I think, is just giving 1TB of storage. I understand this machine is very, very competitively priced, given the hardware, and the market, but I personally would just love to see a bump to 2TB.
Ultimately, I really like this laptop, and I think most looking for a highly spec’d machine would be happy with this choice. When you look across the market, there is real value here.

Performance. Flexibility. Plain. Value.
on May 30, 2023
Posted by: skylog
Given hardware these days, there aren’t too many things you can “affordably” do to get some more performance out of your system. Upgrading or adding more RAM is, mostly, one of those things. I think for the money spent, of course given your needs, it is one of the best ways to give a system a little boost.
As for these sticks, first, I like the look. I know for many this is not a concern, and, honestly, given trends, these would be considered plain and boring. Plain. Black. Simple. Sleek. Minimal branding. Some will probably want more, but these are perfect for me and what I want.
Performance-wise, I couldn’t be happier. Everything is little smoother, I can push games a little harder, and even my open tab problem…is not a problem. I really don’t know what to say here, it does what I want. It gets the job done. It doesn’t require much attention once installed. Of course, know your system, speeds, compatibilities, and voltages. DDR5 is still a bit finnicky. You do have a little play here, and could speed down, but I was able to hit 5600 without issue.
In the end, this RAM has worked for me, and I have zero complaints. Solid and steady performance, a little futureproofing, and those sweet plain looks that I appreciate. Importantly, all of that also comes at a decent price point. I really think the value is there. I think for most workloads and software environments, 32GB should be more than fine. I guess it would also be my floor if I was forced to pick. Obviously, be sure of your needs, and absolutely check motherboard and general compatibility issues beforehand, but I think most would be happy with this in their systems.

Looks Great. Easy To Use. The Control You Want.
on May 23, 2023
Posted by: skylog
I have been wanting a smart thermostat for some time, and yes, this is my first experience with one; but, after getting this up and running I can easily say I am quite happy not only with how it works, but the setup and the design as well.
For me, one of the things that kept me away was the thought of installation. Here, I think they did an excellent job of making that as painless as possible. I did check some compatibility issues beforehand, but other than that I mostly went in blind. Sensai, and the app, guides you the process from start to finish, and I had zero issues getting everything connected and attached. Of course, your situation may be different, but I do think most would be fine given how well they explain the process.
Once physically connected and attached, getting connected to my network was also a simple, no issues process for me. From there I got everything into my Google account, and I was good to go. While I do think Sensai has done a solid job with their app, and the Google integration is good, part of me wonders how tight the integration would be with a Google thermostat. That is a thought for another time.
As for the unit itself, simply, I think it looks great. As to my above point, one of the main reasons I preferred this model was the design. Simple. Clean. Black. Nice fonts. Nice graphics. Perfect for me. All in all, I could not be happier with how it looks on my wall. Build-wise, it is more of the same. It is a nice weight, seems solid, and I can’t imagine I will ever really have any issues.
The unit is easy to use, on the unit itself, or via the app. For me though, and despite everything I have mentioned and liked so far, the main reason for this move was for better control. Being able to schedule, have routines, and to simply be able to have control when out of the house was what I was looking for. Not only for a better peace of mind, and for environmental concerns, but also to potentially save some money. Time will tell, but I am optimistic.
Ultimately, I really like this thermostat. Install was easy, it looks great, it is simple to use, it works with Google, and it gives me the control I was looking for. All in all, I could not be happier.

Great Sound. Dyson Quality. Good Idea?
on May 2, 2023
Posted by: skylog
To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect with these headphones. On some level, I truly asked, “Really?” That said, given I have had some experience with some other Dyson products, I suspected they would be designed well, built well, and have an overall quality to them. In short, they were all of that, and really good pair of headphones.
As expected, everything seems very well thought out and put together. Further, from the headphones themselves, to the cables, to the storage, to the accessories, everything is of high quality, and I expect will last over time. When it comes to looks, well, that is going to be a personal thing for people, and, frankly, I am not the biggest fan. They definitely look “futuristic,” and if I am being completely honest, a little like there are two Dyson vacuums on your ears. The visor has a similar look and color scheme, matches well, and is really easy to attach and detach. A pretty cool bit of engineering. I don’t know, I do not want to be too negative, but I just don’t really like the look or the colors, and while I am sure it will get better with time, I was having trouble getting accustomed to the visor.
Set-up was an easy process. Get them charged up, be sure to install the MyDyson App, and more or less follow some directions. I had no issues whatsoever, and I suspect most will not either. I really like the App for all the control and information it can provide. It gives you a host of information about air quality (although I guess I really don’t know that is determined), filter usage, battery life, and some nice EQ control. As always, I think it is worth the time to dial in your music to how you like it.
As for the headphones, as headphones, I think they sound great. I “think” this is Dyson’s first experience with headphones, and even with their track record, until they are out, and you use them, you just never know. I think they nailed it. Lows are deep and clean, mids are clear and highs are crisp. Everything is balanced and detailed. There was little to no distortion, even at high volumes, but, if I had one nitpick, it would be that the overall volume levels did not max out that high. I am sure this was intentional, but just something to note. Beyond the sound, these may be one of if not the best noise cancelling cans I have used. They did an excellent job of blocking everything out and getting that isolated feel.
Now, for the interesting/confusing part, at least for me. The air purification. To be clear, everything Dyson has put together here is well thought out, and seemingly done well. The filters in the ear cups are not that loud. They are slightly noticeable to me depending on the power when the ANC is off, although I guess this may vary by person. With the ANC on, for me, I did not know they were there. They absolutely deliver a nice stream of air to the visor and to you. Again, it all seems to work very well. In certain areas, places, circumstances, I think it could be a great thing to have. I just don’t think it is something I need. Perhaps I am underestimating the value, but per the app, I just never seemed to be in a spot where my air quality was bad.
So far, battery-life has been good, as advertised. That said, I think usage plays a major role in how long these will last. ANC drains it faster, as does using the air purification. So, keep in mind how you want to use these and how that will affect the battery life.
I probably should have hit on this sooner, but while I did find the headphones “comfortable” overall, as the cups are just great, and I think they did a great job with overall balance on your head…they are quite heavy. Moreso with the visor, which itself does not really weigh that much. For people familiar with some of the more popular brands of cans, the weight will be noticeable. It also does take a bit of time, but eventually I started to feel it. I suppose this is a matter of give and take, but, again, something to note.
I don’t know, I am quite torn about these. Ultimately, I really like how they sound, and I do really think Dyson has done a fantastic job putting these together. That said, I do question, for me personally, the value of the air purification. In some circumstances, I can see it, but if you do not find yourself in those circumstances, it is harder to do so. They are a great sounding pair of cans, but if you are not truly benefiting from one of main selling points of them, then the value is just not there for me. Again, the tech is great, the sound as well, and I think for some the overall package could be worth a look but be sure to check your use case.

Simple. Smaller. Efficient. Perfect.
on April 27, 2023
Posted by: skylog
I have been a happy user of the original Anova for quite a few years, so I had a pretty good idea what to expect and see with this newer model. In short, I could not be happier.
The unit is well-built, looks good and has very clear and responsive controls. While it is not “much” smaller than the standard model, it is absolutely a bit more compact. It is just enough to make a nice difference in use and storage. You can use some smaller vessels and it takes up just a little less space when you put it away.
As for performance, I really can’t say anything bad here. It is just about as easy to use as you could ever expect (the app is also great), and while it may be “slightly” less powerful than more pricier models, it can easily handle most jobs. If you are really looking to do some large-sized jobs, maybe you will want to skip this Nano, but, frankly, I think most people will be covered here. Further, I have found that it really does nail its temperatures, in terms of being precise and consistent. I couldn’t really ask for more.
Honestly, I really hesitate to say anything is perfect, but this unit comes pretty close. I just really do not have any complaints. Beyond that, and probably more importantly, it does what it is designed for very well, has a good build, and comes from a respected brand in the space. As I said earlier, unless you really need more power, I think most would be very happy with this sous vide cooker.

Good system. Very good value. Some limitations.

Overall, I think this is a quality solid system that can work for quite a few people. Set-up was a bit cumbersome for me, mainly having to work out the wiring and location, but as a whole, was not that bad and mainly a case of doing the work upfront to be set up for a long-time kind of thing. Otherwise, no setup issues for me.
As for the cameras themselves, while not 4K (and at a better price point), they give a nice, detailed, and clear picture (day or night), with a lot of options, which are always welcome. Same with the software and operation. Motion detection. Deterrence features (light and sound). Voice control. Alerts. All of these are welcome, and work well (I do really like the red and blue lights). I really also do appreciate that you do not need “a service” for this product. It seems this is becoming rarer these days. I do think a major miss, and I guess I understand the choice, was only allowing 1-Way audio. I just think 2-Way is almost a requirement for me with this kind of product. The functionality is something I am simply just looking for. That said, for others, or their particular setup, this may not be the case. Just something to note.
Build-wise, I think everything should last for some time. Of course, this is going to have to be wait and see kind of thing for me, but the cameras themselves as well as the wiring are well-built, and I think will hold up. Same for the other hardware, and while I maybe could have used more cameras included (although that would obviously have raised the price), I do like that the system is built to allow for more cameras if the need arises in the future. This one is always a toss-up, but hopefully they take the same approach with their software and not only keep stuff current, but also improve it over time. We shall see.
Ultimately, I like these cameras and this system. Good cameras, nice features, an effective DVR set-up (with no plan), and hardware that should last. At a nice price point. The value is there. While the wiring/power was not my favorite part, it does provide more stability than wireless, and once the work is done you are set. Obviously, your needs and setup will play a part, but I think this system will work for most people.

Great Value. Solid All-Around Buds.

I always have to say it, but being a regular Android user, it is always a challenge to settle on a pair of buds. There are so many options. Some good. Some bad. These Jabra definitely fit into the “good” ones. They sound good, (very importantly) fit me well, have a nice set of features, have a good app, are easy to use, and have very solid battery life. All in all, I pretty much like everything.
Pairing was a very simple process. I really have not had any true connectivity issues to this point. I was pretty excited to mess with the multipoint stuff, and, largely, it has been nice. There has been a quirk here and there, but I don’t really take issue, because generally everything has been rock solid otherwise. I like the fact that companies are getting more aggressive with this kind of pairing. The App is easy to use, intuitive, and gives you a fair amount to play with as well as control. You can play with the EQ settings so you can dial the sound in to how you like it, while also letting you control the noise cancellation modes.
Well-built. Solid, but with a nice light weight. Nice water and sweat protection. In short, I like the build. They come with the standard set of three tips so, in theory, most should find a fit that works for them. Clearly, fit is going to be a personal thing, and be different for each person. For me, when it comes buds, this is just about the most important thing. If they aren’t comfortable, I won’t wear them. If I won’t wear them, then what is the point? Further, without a proper fit, the sound will suffer. Again, what is the point? Luckily, in my case, they fit me very well. Further, they are comfortable. For me. As for the design/style? I really like the looks. Clean, black, and matte. Simple. Plain. Perfect for me.
Since I just mentioned sound. They sound “good.” They are not the best, but absolutely solid, and I think most would be pleased. Lows, Mids, Highs, and Vocals are all good. Most genres I listened to sound good as is, but as I always suggest, take the time to go in and play with the EQ and sound settings. It is worth the time. Lastly, volume is “slightly” lacking. I would think most would be fine, just something to note. Beyond the general sound, I think they also did a nice job with the sound modes. While I haven’t “really” spent a lot of time in the past using ANC and/or the “passive” modes with other buds, I did find that they work as advertised here, and it may be something I turn to more. I think a great thing they have done is allow single bud use. This is something I have extensively used in the past while listening to podcasts while doing stuff around the house, being outside, kind of just everywhere. While the Hear Through mode may change things for me, I just really appreciate being able to simply use one bud.
Battery life has been great. As rated/advertised…or even a bit better. Typically for Jabra, they hit all the keep points here. USB-C, an efficient and useful quick charge, long life, and a case that provides a ton of charge. Cases, well, can be a personal thing, and hit or miss. I like the look, very plain, see above. It is completely functional in every way. It is also a nice size and is easily pocketable. Nothing revolutionary here, but also, nothing bad. I like it.
Ultimately, as I said above, these are a good set of buds and I like them. I like the look, they fit me well, have great battery life, and sound good. They have some nice additional features here and there, and, frankly, are just solid. They are a great value, and while some may be looking for more, I think many would be happy with these as their primary buds.
