Perfect tool for the beard
on March 8, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
I've been running with the same beard trimmer for at least 6 years now. My face forest has really taken its toll on that trimmer and I've been longing for a refresh. This conair metal series really meets the bill, it features salon quality blades that are sharp and can trim closely and precisely. The weight of the trimmer is light, but not enough so that it feels flimsy or cheap.
I was happy with the attachments as they have the right shape to provide consistent length to your beard as you trim over what can be very tough areas like the chin line. The battery has lots and lots of charge, more than enough to trim multiple times a week and just shoving it in a drawer in between instead of having to leave another thing out, plugged in. I also like that they use a micro-USB charger so that power can be ubiquitous and I don't need to drag along another charger when this goes in my travel bag (whenever we travel again, COVID).
I did have one minor complaint, the kit does not have have a brush to clean up the trimmer after use. You can find a brush easily but it was none the less pretty annoying and what was otherwise a great trimmer.

The perfect kid-friendly headphones
on August 4, 2020

y son loves these headphones! He thinks they're cool because they are wireless, and he loves the gamer motif. He also has told me that he likes how the block out outside noise.
They are sold as gaming headphones, but in this day and age they're also great for taking Zoom classes online, which he has done with great success (sound and mic both work great).
I like them because they have a built-in volume limiter that keeps sounds quiet enough to protect his ears, unlike adult headphones, and they fit him really well (larger than average 8 year old). They paired super easy with both our samsung TV he plays video games on and with his ipad. The battery lasts at least two days of pandemic indoor activities inbetween trips to the USB charger.
I'm not sure how many devices you can sync at a time.

The best laptop I've ever used
on July 9, 2020
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
Before I begin, I want to be clear that I was provided this laptop through my affiliation with the Tech Insider Network. Reviewers in this invitation-only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. I stick to my unbiased portion of that review and always based my review on how I would feel if I had just spend retail price for the product I was provided.
While this laptop is one of the pricier options in the market if I had to pay full retail in order to keep a surface book 3 I would in a heart beat. It really is the best laptop I've had. I would describe it as the laptop that has all those things you like about performance and design in a Mac, but with an operating system and archtecture designed to use 99% of applications out there so you don't have to compromise avilability of native applications inorder to get a laptop you're happy about.
I like the screen factor, I didn't look to know for sure but it feels more like 4:3 instead of 16:9, giving you a little more vertical space than you typically get on laptops now. Also having a 15" instead of 14" option really helps when working on the laptop itself instead of a second monitor. Screen definition is great.
It is clear Microsoft thought hard about the experience when performing creative tasks like photo and graphics editing. Filters apply seamlessly thanks to the beefy GPU and while it feel penny-pinching to sell seperatley, working with the surface pen does really improve the editing experience as you really can work with the different brush types and "feel" the pressure change of light vs strong strokes etc. I was able to create and apply some filtering effects and apply them to local photos quickly.
The tablet mode, seperating the screen from the base, is a very cool party trick, but ultimately I don't think I'm going to use that mode nearly enough to justify the design trade-offs MS had to make in order to build the capability.
There are a couple minor complaints about the design that keep it from being perfect: I wish the keyboard took better advantage of the 15" layout, it looks like it is the same keyboard used in the 13" models just dropped in the middle of a 15". While I like the look of the hard edges I do find myself wishing there was a little lip to the bottom of the laptop so that it was easier to pick up, it can be difficult to slide your fingers underneath to grab one handed and head-off with laptop in nook of arm. I also wish that it was a little more projector friendly as I've had to pack my baggy-o-dongles back in my bag inorder as USB-c and Surface Port are the output options built-in.
The complaints are minor compared to the overall excellence in design and performance that I've seen over the past week.

Fantastic travel mouse - fun styling
on June 26, 2020
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
I have long been a fan of the Logitech travel mice and have owned my previous m317 for at least 5 years. This mouse was the perfect replacement to that old one and the design has improved slightly in that time.
The outer covering that feels still like a plastic is much nicer in your hand with the new one it has a slight silicone touch that makes it much gripier and comfortable.
my old one was black and it's certainly much easier to find a teal and white mouse in the bottom of your work bag than it was a black mouse - it's also a fun distraction from the tedium of work.
The advertised battery life is a year obviously I haven't had enough time to really know how good the battery is though. I can say with my old one I replace the battery about every 6 months so I would hope that they have made improvements since that and they advertise that the low power consumption is vastly reduced so it should be better.

Awesome motorized dart launching
on May 16, 2020

Pretty cool rifle size dart gun. Features stylization of the popular fortnite video game. Rather than mechanical action, this rifle is battery powered, hold down the primer and then pull the trigger for semiautomatic nerf dart storm.
The gun looks the part as far as fortnite styling, I like how this adds a cartoonist element so my child is not running around the neighborhood with something that looks anything but a nerf.
The battery powered action makes it great for smaller kids as the slide action in other rifle sized nerf guns are hard for younger kids to operate. I did find the size of the rifle to be too large for kids under 11, my 7 year old can't hold it in should to properly aim, not that aim matters with the darts that come with it. It's worth upgrading to the sharpshooter darts, which are compatible with the 10-dart magazine. Comes with 20 darts so you can afford to lose a few. While this is stylized for fortnite it's compatible with rail accessories and dart magazines for other nerf lines like n-strike.
The gun does seem to jam quite a bit, to a degree that feels like more than bolt/pump action nerf rifles my family also owns.

Great true wireless on a budget
on April 27, 2020

I overall found these to be quality headphones.
The paired right out of the box and had sufficient battery to go as soon as they were unboxed which was nice. The storage box has plenty of charge -- these will last for most walks or commutes.
The memory foam within the earbuds is what really makes these nice. It molds the earbud into your ear and holds it securely. I don't like to run with earbuds on (cuz, SAFETY!) but I don't think these would bounce around in your ears the way others have on me.
Overall the sound quality was nice. I have a nice pair of over the hear noise cancelling headphones I use (or used to use, thanks COVID-19) on long flights and I wouldn't trade those for these -- but for something small, unobtrusive, packable that delivers high quality sound while on the tread mill etc. theyre tough to beat, especially at this price point.
I do have a couple complaint worth noting: The bluetooth connectivity got a little wonky if you try to manually turn them off and on instead of just using the storage box.
I also did find it hard to use the controls on the device, they didn't seem to respond the way the instructions said they should -- I really couldn't get anything but single tap to work, double tap or long tap almost never worked. You also have to stand still to effectively use the buttons anyway, at which point it was easier to fish my phone out and just control from there. Neither of these are deal breakers as they don't impact day to day usage -- but worth noting.

Panasonic easy-to-use video baby monitor uses the same clear and secure (non-wi-fi) long-range DECT technology found in its top-selling cordless home phone systems. DECT systems offer clear, secure and interference-free signal strength up to 1500 feet* more than the length of four football fields, and twice the range of comparable monitors. Anywhere in or outside the home you can clearly and continually keep tabs on your child. The Panasonic baby monitor includes a bright 3.5-in. color monitor and easy controls that sync to an improved wide-eyed, wall-mountable monochrome night vision camera in the baby's room. The video camera can be controlled remotely to pan, tilt and zoom the camera from the baby monitor to look in on your child anytime. Improved long-life, built-in battery charging in the monitor stores power for up to 13 hours of standby time and up to 5 hours of power for continuous use. A smart motion sensor alerts you when the baby is awake or crying. A temperature sensor alerts you if the room is above or below a range you set. When activated, sensors sound a chime, illuminate a LED on the monitor and display notifications on the monitors screen. Microphones and speakers in both video camera and baby Monitor enable 2-way talk with anyone in the room. And, you can play gentle, soothing sounds that include five types of White noise and a choice of lullabies.

Checks all the boxes - Great Baby Monitor
on December 11, 2019
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
Prior to getting this Panasonic baby monitor I'd used a couple different Motorola models for my first child. I also have nest indoor cameras that I considered repurposing as a baby monitor. I'm glad that I decided to go with the Panasonic it has many features that work really well.
The intelligent alarms work really well and can be used for general sounds, baby specific sounds or movement. I also like that not only does it have temperature alarm, but you can change the upper and lower limits based on your specific situation.
The video quality is nothing especially amazing, but its as good as the motorola models I've used, and the night mode on this is better, I would say its even better then the night mode on my nest cameras.
Range from camera to base station was great for anything that I needed to do and never dropped below 50% signal strength, even in locations where I have bad wifi or bluetooth signal (like the garage).

Not as great a Shaver as 10 years ago
on December 11, 2019
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
This is not my first Norelco electric shaver. I've been using them for 15 years now. My most recent one was purchased about 10 years ago. A couple years after purchasing that one I switched online razor clubs and felt like using blades and lotion was getting me a better shave.
I was interested in coming back to an electric shaver so that I could have more of a quick and convenient shave experience as my house is full of kids and I want to be able to get in and get out of the bathroom. My hope was that the advertised fast charging and bettery life would be paired with evolutions in shaver technology so that I could have a smooth, burn-free shave in less time, without balm or shave gel and not have to worry about if my shaver had battery or not.
My initial impression of the shaver was disappointing. The casing that Norelco uses now feels much lighter then 10+ years ago, in a plastic kind of way, it feels much more fragile. I also was unimpressed that the charging cord they provided was crazy long and seemed flimsy and cheap -- especially compared to the old charging cable I had for my previous models.
Getting past these build quality concerns I still put it to my face daily for two weeks to see how the battery held up and how the shave feels.
The battery is great -- it does charge quickly and gives you enough charge to make it a week without a power socket. This is perfect for throwing in you travel bag for a business trip, or just making sure that you can keep your face "Executive Meeting" ready every day of the work week. It also means you don't have to sacrifice a plug for the hair dryer(s) and electric toothbrushes and all other manner of gidgets and wazoos taht fill my bathroom counter.
I didn't find the shave experience as good as I was hoping. Frankly speaking I pulled my 10 year old shave out of a drawaer and used it after using this one and my beard felt smoother and I didn't get any razer bumps -- which I did when using this new 2500 shaver. In hopes of improving the experience I did try using some face lotions a couple times -- NOT RECOMMENDED, any lotion at all on your face jams this shaver up enough to prevent functionality, and cleaning it out was a serious pain as well.
Norelco has a 3500 model that is for wet/dry shave -- I suspect that is probably worth it as it would be designed to allow the use of lotion, shave gel or something. Given my experience during my extended trial I really can't recommend using this model however.

Excellent UHD TV
on April 21, 2019
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
Overall I'm very pleased with this TV. It's been at least 5 years since I purchased a UHD TV and this is my first with HDR.
I found the picture quality to be good, although not perceptively better then my older nonHDR TV when using the same 4k Blu-ray in same player.
The very very thin bezel is a really great look. I was pleased to see that there are 4 HDMI inputs plus builtin Chromecast. Setup was really easy using the companion device (my phone) to sync a lot of the AndroidTV accounts.
This isn't really Hisense's fault but I was really frustrated that there isnt a prime video app for the platform yet - I get amazing 4k prime watching on my older TV. Fortunately Xbox, PS4 4k Blu-ray players etc all support prime so you can still watch, but it feels like a hack when I have sooooooooo much other content available with my TV's home button.
Google assistant was ok, there is a microphone builtin to the remote and the remote connects to tv over Bluetooth so it doesn't have to be pointed at the screen, great for my kid and if you get up and want switch over. I found that my Google home speaker did get confused a lot though.
I've setup several brands of tvs between my extended family and this was the first I've come across where the inputs where on the left and the power cord on the right. I'm not sure if that's blind luck or if Hisense is going counter to convention but it did make upgrading an existing home theater that much more cumbersome. Also the vesa mounting blocks need spacers for the top bolts and the vesa quadrangle is significantly lower on the body of the TV compared to other models I've mounted, which is even harder as I puts the TV unreasonably up in the ceiling unless I pull lags out of my dry wall, a very messy project.
Overall I liked this TV a lot but there are a few drawbacks that folks should be aware of going in. Is the picture quality great? Yes! Is it the best picture period? No, but as far as TV per a dollar this is a great tv that won't disappoint, especially when on sale.

First cordless vacuum for the whole house
on March 25, 2019
Posted by: BostonBru
from Hadley
Ever since the dustbusters I grew up with I've had both corded and cordless vacuums in my house. It used to lug the big corded vacuum out and that was the only way to give everything a proper clean and the cordless was fine for spot messes inbetween.
The Dyson cordless vacuums in general really started to move the needle as far as what a cordless vacuum was capable of. This is my third and the previous two we both really good (better then some non-Dyson corded vacuums) and going after those trouble spots like under the kitchen table or the rug of the entry way.
The features that make this a real difference is just how well it sucks up dirt from your carpet and rugs and then adjusts on the fly for the tile and wood floors. It also have enough battery power on one charge to get everywhere in a house less than 2000 sqft, I also love the redesigned bin release -- its the first Dyson that I haven't had to take completely apart whenever my wife uses it -- she always runs vacuums past the FULL line and I'm left trying to pull dog hair off the top of the filter. The way the bin release pushed all the pet hair and dust bunnies off the filter and down in to the waste basket is beyond awesome.
This vacuum also features a LCD panel that explains what mode you're running and how much time you can run in that mode until battery is completely discharged. I don't really find this feature useful since you will undoubtedly be changing surfaces and power frequently as you work around the house and, at least in my preliminary cleaning, I didn't see this estimate get 'smart' about how I use it to give me a more accurate estimate based on my use instead of current power mode. I guess its a step up from not having any information but a % remaining makes more send to me then time.
Ultimately, this vacuum is good enough that my corded Dyson cinetic will probably only come out the closet to make guest appearance.

This GoPro HERO10 camera features a 1.4-inch screen for framing shots seamlessly, and the 23MP sensor captures 5.3K videos effortlessly.

Does the GoPro 10 have the lighting capability to film indoor? I have the GoPro Hero 5. It’s awesome outdoors but is very records very poorly indoors. Wondering if this has changed on GoPro 10. Thanks.

I've used the Hero 10 in low light indoor situations and been thoroughly impressed with the output. I do notice a short wash out if I have a shot that goes from indoors to outdoors but it quickly updates to the new lighting condition.

How is the microphone with phone calls? Is the sound muffled or altered to the other line?

Its better than other head phones I've used but isn't ideal. If you're in a quiet office everything is great. They pick up less background noise then average but I had my wife use them while I called her on a walk and I could hear a lot of wind noise and she was a little "tin-ie"

Nest Doorbell (Wired) lets you know who’s there, so you never miss a thing. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and delivers HD video and bright, crisp images, even at night. It’s designed to show you everything at your doorstep — people head to toe or packages on the ground. And with 24/7 streaming, you can check in anytime. Or go back and look at a 3-hour snapshot history to see what happened.*

Will Google Hello do a better job in regards to lag (delay) and motion detection? I had another video doorbell (rhimes with Ding) which could not adequately connect to the wifi, terrable lag, poor motion detection (false alarms and missed live ones).

This may have more to do with your network than the actual doorchime.

I can say that I have a -59dB signal at the front door and the delay in the live feed on my phone is less than a second.
