Great External, take or leave the "gaming"
on November 20, 2018

The 2tb drive provides ample storage for most applications you can think up and had acceptable read and write times when connect via usb 3.0 port.
What makes this a "gaming" drive is that it's formatted using an uncommon disk type that is compatible with ps4.
I didn't know that ahead of time, I thought it had to do with read/write as I use it with my Xbox and windows machines.
The storage was still good enough to back up two laptops and my Xbox with out a problem once I reformatted the drive.
The enclosure itself seems"cool" and durable enough to transport around with injury to your precious files

Incredible excitement leads to meh
on October 22, 2018

I've been a using Fitbits for around 4 years now but been somewhat annoyed doing so. I like the fitbit app, I like the fitness tracking but overall the hardware has always felt cheap, and when I don't wear anything "smart" I wear a really nice watch that does not feel cheap. I've eyed the Samsung and Apple watches for a while but they aren't compatible with Nexus/Pixel devices so Iw as excited to learn that Fossil was making a large series of Wear OS watches for this release year and figured it was time to try out something new.
The watch looks beautiful in the box but I was disappointed immediately with two issues (1) the battery was completely dead -- I though apple solved this 10 years ago? (2) the smoke steel band was wayyyyy too big and next to impossible to adjust on your own. Most men don't have gigantic wrists, why not size it appropriately so that most people can use it immediately and leave some spare links in the box?
I've now used it for five days and my complaints have continued. It frequently moves to either the Google Assistant or Watch Face create new category screen while I'm walking around, and when I look down for the time or a notification I realize it has recorded random conversation in to one of those inputs which I find pretty annoying. The only the way that the battery makes it a day is if I put battery saver on, and that dims the screen so much I can't read it. This is especially worrying since I really haven't done anything with it except set it up "out of the box" I haven't really started to use apps or do anything besides glance at my watch instead of my phone for notifications. It makes me afraid to use GPS or NFC payments as I'm pretty sure my watch would be dead by mid afternoon if I tried either.
I haven't found any settings in the in-watch menu or supporting android app to adjust how long the screen stays active or other finer grain detail -- the settings available are pretty high level. Unless I'm doing it wrong, in which case they didn't make the design intuitive.
As I mentioned I'm replacing fitbit with this and with fitbits I average anywhere from 12k to 15k steps a day -- the google fit step counter in this seems way off as it has been telling me like 5k to 6k steps doing the same activities, which is annoying.
It is a very pretty design, although you need to be ready for a beefy watch head as it quite large. I was a little disappointed with the thickness.
In Sumamry, I found enough flaws that I'm wishing I had just got another fitbit, where I had a reliable battery and excellent functionality, albeit with a built-in 53 week shelf life before it broke and forced me to reevaluate my commitment to wearables.

Didn't work out for me
on October 10, 2018

Upgrading your HDD for an SSD is one of the best things you can do from a budget and impact point of view to keep using an older hard drive. I have a three to four year old thinkpad that I got this hard drive for. I've performed numerous upgrades (including to this laptop) and swapped harddrives in both desktops and laptops before so this was not my first go at cloning and swapoping, although it was the first after market SSD I've worked with.
From a process standpoint I knew going in that I was going to need a new cable/enclosure for the Cloning process which I picked up in store at BBY while I waited for the SSD to arrive in the mail.
When it came in I was able to hookup via USB 3.0 and initialize the drive just fine, it looked like the clone went OK after that but when I swapped the drives after cloning the SSD was undetected. I tried a few other (3 to be specific) windows machines and wasn't able to detect the SSD on any of them so something clearly went wrong during cloning.
A couple weeks later I tried plugging it back in to my desktop and the desktop found our misbehaving drive. I Initited a reformat and reinitialized, which ran successfully. After that no machine I own can find this hard drive so I've been unable to re-attempt the clone and swap.
Honestly I'd view it as highly risky to trust my thinkpad to this SSD given how unreliable its been during my attempts.
I see many others have had no issues what so ever so I'm sure I got the 0.3% defect rate and 99.7% of you will have no problems what so ever -- but treat this review as a word of caution.

Pretty, But LImited
on September 20, 2018

This is the kind of product you feel bad ranking low.
It looks great, has a super thin bezel, great contrast and rich color. Support for multiple inputs as well.
The monitor stand looks nice enough for you to be happy setting this up on your desk, and that's good because the monitor is not VESA compatible, there is no way to use this monitor except with the included stand..So if you're looking to take advantage of those thin bezels for a near seamless multi-monitor setup you're going to need a LOT of desk space dedicated to stands.
The other major issue I had with this monitor that folks need to be aware of is that it ONLY accepts HDMI input, obviously you can get a DPORT/HDMI or HDMI/DVI converter to meet your needs but I was really surprised the DPORT wasn't an option given how ubiquitous it is.
Given that I have it now I'm doing what I can to make it work, the screen real estate you get in 27" makes it easy, but I had to buy an adapter to hook it up and I couldn't use my existing monitor mount to support multiple monitors so my use is a little reluctant in the end.
Again, that's a shame because beyond those limitations this monitor looks great and functions well.

Not Quite Perfect, But Beautiful
on July 2, 2018
Posted by: BostonBru

I've spent my time playing with the HP ENVY 17" laptop and I can say that its a beautiful product. HP likes to present the Envy-line as top of the line competitors to Apple and is putting the effort in to design them in a way that feels premium and it shows.
When it comes time to actually do something on this laptop though there are a few issues that come out, especially compared to the current offerings from the competition (Dell, Lenovo, Asus).
Word of warning, and no judgement against this particular laptop but in general -- if you're going to get a 17" laptop be aware you're not really getting a go anywhere productivity machine but more of a desktop that can be picked up and brought to any room in your house that you want to work in. Its big, too big for most shoulder bags backpacks or hand bags and its heavy, like as much as a couple thick textbooks and I wouldn't want to block any more than a couple blocks with it on my back. What you get for that size and weight is an epic viewing experience on the FHD screen that, when put up to your face like a laptop does, feels massive. Its unfortunate that they didn't cram a UHD screen into the same spot given that 4k has become my default resolution for monitors in the last 18 months and is even present on my other personal laptop.
The graphics card is OK, its going to struggle with some of the latest games, as I saw screen hiccups and rendering issues when playing a couple new titles on it that I didn't on my Radeon-driven desktop.
Probably the biggest sin of this laptop is only equiping 12GB of RAM, sodlered (according to datasheet, I didn't look) in. Every other machine I have for work or play has at least 16GB, and if your running Windows 10 with any multi-tasking you really need it all. I tried to screencast Forza and the HP just couldn't take it which is a shame, because as I said -- it looks beautiful, and having that screen real-estate in your lap is such a big oppurtunity.
The last point that I'd like to make is I'm not sure why companies continue to put DVD drives in laptops -- I haven't put a DVD in a laptop for at least 4 years. I'd love to be able to watch a blu-ray on my laptop but haven't found the right computer for it.
Ultimately, this looks great and has some pretty sweet specs (besides the RAM) and will be a great laptop for use around the house.

Solid, Top of the Line Laptop
on May 17, 2018
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston MA
This Dell is my second 2-in-1 windows 10 laptop and is a solid choice for anyone, especially for users looking for the power and graphics to run any and everything at once. The graphics are top of the line and the 4k display is awesome -- although the 15.6 size and heft are worth considering, its not the most mobile laptop.
There are a couple drawbacks that prevented this laptop from getting the full 5 stars -- The first is that I found the keyboard to be substandard compared to previous Dell's and Lenovo's. I have a strong preference for the ThinkPad keyboards so some of it is probably that personal preference -- but there are Alienware keyboards that I also find far superior.
The second drawback is the lack of USB-C ports. This is the current standard and the work equipment I got last year came equipped so it was disappointing not to find it here.
Lastly I was dissapointed with the touch-pen that comes included. This was a small concern as my use is not visual arts, so its almost a fourth pointing device to me after touchpad, external mouse and the touch screen standalone. I've used the surface pen and liked that more is all.
Still, the SSD hard drive loads fast, all though you will need cloud accounts for full usability as mine only came with 256GB on board an no back up, the laptop has plenty of RAM, top of the line processor and an insane graphics card. The touchscreen is super responsive.
Advanced applications run extremely smoothly!
Overall this is a great laptop and a very reasonable price, don't let my minor nitpicks sway you against unless those are the specific make-or-break features you're looking for.

Not for me
on March 27, 2018
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston MA
I had really mixed feelings about this BT speaker.
(+) The speaker itself is pretty good, Feels nice and sturdy, like you can take it where ever you want and it will reliably perform. I spent the weekend with it in the woodshop and felt as good about it as I do construction radios, with the benefit of not wasting a 21V on music.
(+) The idea of being able to add a bunch of these to a Sony Music Center app and linking them so you're whole party is synced. I only have one so I can't comment on how well it worked or the range. The literature from Sony says you can connect 100, but I wonder if you can have them on the front porch, by the pool, under the pergola, in the living room and they all are still in sync to the same source or not.
(-) Overall the bass is a little heavy and I was dissappointed to find out that I couldn't modify the balance in the Sony Music Center when I downloaded that app.
(-) It feels like most speakers that are in this price range ($90 - $150) that are being released have Alexa/Google Assistance/etc. integration which, while not something I'm in too, seems odd to be lacking.
(-) I've charged it once, and it took much longer than I expected. My wireless headphone and computer peripherals all charge in around an hour and in the case of headphones, are good for 16 hours afterwards. I didn't time it, but it took at least twice as long for this speaker to charge.
(-) The biggest draw back for me was the gimmicky part. I didn't care for either the strobe light effect or the "Party Booster" feature. Party Booster in particular reeks of a gimmick that your friends will use once and then the feature will be completely forgotten. Fortunately you don't HAVE to use either of these and it functions fine without them.
Overall my verdict is that this is a very good party speaker that you can take with you to tailgates, the beach, working in your garage, the lakehouse, etc. Its just not the best on the market in the price range.

Nest Doorbell (Wired) lets you know who’s there, so you never miss a thing. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and delivers HD video and bright, crisp images, even at night. It’s designed to show you everything at your doorstep — people head to toe or packages on the ground. And with 24/7 streaming, you can check in anytime. Or go back and look at a 3-hour snapshot history to see what happened.*

Myriad of reasons why this is the best
on March 19, 2018
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston MA
The Nest Hello doorbell is very similar to compete video doorbells on the market. In order to really be a factor for consumers, its going to have to be clearly better than anything else out there.
This is clearly better than anything out there. First of all, it looks great. I love how much it looks like a doorbell, and not a giant camera mounted where your doorbell should be. The lines are very clean.
The camera itself produces higher quality video than any of the competitors at more than 1080/FHD. It shows to as the images that it provides are crystal clear. It also performs exceptionally well in low light conditions. I can see 30 - 50 feet away from the door using only the IR lights and all the way to the street with my main door lights on (they're about 20 feet away from the entryway I mounted the doorbell).
If you haven't used a Nest product before, know that the Nest ecosystem is amazing. Nest is by far the best Android app I've seen as far as design and "just working" I have had issues in the past with the Nest website on a computer but the Android app is amazing, and this product features even greater customization than the Nest cameras if you're familiar with those.
The Google Assistance integration is nice, I like that every Google Assistance device can be an additional door chime for me.
Where things get cool is with the integrated facial recognition technology, so you can start your own database of known faces and let your doorbell announce for you who is waiting. I personally didn't opt to use the feature, but I can see how useful it would be. And if you have the Aware account to store video its included as part of that.
The one relatively minor complaint I had is that the doorbell does not include a mounting bracket adapter for installation against vinyl siding. As a result I have about a 10 degree tilt to the doorbell, which looks a little funny since I do have the 15 degree swivel mounted so the video feed is centered in the portico. I will plan on placing a block cut-out in the siding and remounting in the spring.
I found the installation pretty straightforward. The additional component that installs to the chime was a little bit of a hindrance, but no big deal overall.

Boost the signal throughout your entire home
on March 7, 2018
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston MA
I recently upgraded my router to a Linksys Max-Stream AC2200. Since upgrading to that I get 860Mbps+ signal (single band) in my home office and den but the signal strength definitely deteriorates as you head into the other side of my house, back yard or garage.
If you have an existing Linksys Max-Stream Router this is just about the easiest piece of home networking equipment to install. Just use WPS encryption buttons on both the router and range extender to set it up, the light on top of the Range Extender will let you know if its getting a good signal, and then your existing home network is extended. This does not add an addition SSID or make you configure passwords or any of that nonsense. I must stress that the one continuous network feature only works if you have an existing Max-Stream router.
This definitely extended the range of my existing homenetwork considerably. My son will be able to watch netflix in his tree house after hooking this up (not that I want him to, but you get the idea).
I recently got a Netgear Nighthawk Range Extender (AC1200) for my in-laws. That is a slightly cheaper model but it does allow me to see that the 5Ghz ac backbone on the Linksys RE9000 appears to be more than just marketing speak because this is a superior product to that one and worth the money to upgrade regardless of if you have a netgear, linksys, asus or other router.

Best bluetooth headphones to date
on March 1, 2018
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston MA
Pros:
Looks, its gorgeous!
Connects Quickly
Best sound fidelity I've had from a bluetooth device
Decent Noise Cancelling
Cons
Pressure from ANC
Start to feel tight after 3 hours
Would like to be able to un/mute calls from headphones
Extended Review:
I've owned a fair amount of mid range (think Bose, expensive Sony's) headphones, ear buds and what-not over the years. Thus far, whenever I've spent more than $100 on a pair, I've been disappointed. What I've learned is that if I accept the inferior sound quality of the lesser brands I'm rewarded with the product meeting or exceeding my expectations.
This is the first time I've owned a premium pair that has met my expectations -- their great, the most faithful reproduction of sound that I've gotten from Bluetooth headphones. I've also hooked them up for conference calls and that's great, the noise cancelling really helps you tune in to whatever you auditory focus is.
The craftsmanship and quality that is apparent in the build is evident everywhere in the design and detail.
A couple of minor drawbacks: You will feel the pressure on your ears as soon as you turn these on, you get that with every Noise-Cancelling pair I've owned. The noise cancelling is really good at picking up the drone from airplanes, cars, furnaces, fridges, etc. and tuning that out, but any sharp noises will still come through pretty clear. I actually like this as if my wife needs to get my attention she still can. One note: ANC is on whenever the device is on.
I found that the spring starts to feel a little tight after 3 hours -- but come'on -- three hours!
Last complaint, and this probably doesn't affect 95% of the population that's going to buy these so no stars off -- I would really like the ability to mute and unmute calls directly on the headphones. Besides that I really likes how intuitive the combination of the rocker/button and power button were for operation.
This gets the 5 stars as there is nothing better in the market segment.

Does the GoPro 10 have the lighting capability to film indoor? I have the GoPro Hero 5. It’s awesome outdoors but is very records very poorly indoors. Wondering if this has changed on GoPro 10. Thanks.

I've used the Hero 10 in low light indoor situations and been thoroughly impressed with the output. I do notice a short wash out if I have a shot that goes from indoors to outdoors but it quickly updates to the new lighting condition.

How is the microphone with phone calls? Is the sound muffled or altered to the other line?

Its better than other head phones I've used but isn't ideal. If you're in a quiet office everything is great. They pick up less background noise then average but I had my wife use them while I called her on a walk and I could hear a lot of wind noise and she was a little "tin-ie"

Will Google Hello do a better job in regards to lag (delay) and motion detection? I had another video doorbell (rhimes with Ding) which could not adequately connect to the wifi, terrable lag, poor motion detection (false alarms and missed live ones).

This may have more to do with your network than the actual doorchime.

I can say that I have a -59dB signal at the front door and the delay in the live feed on my phone is less than a second.
