The essential WFH-office conferencing accessory
on February 15, 2022

I've used this docking station/speaker phone for two work days now and I love it. In my job I spend 6 - 8 hours a day videoconferencing. I have a reliable video camera but I've long suffered from audio issues -- I dislike headsets mostly because they get uncomfortable during all day use and because you're either wired to the desk or have some element of battery when you're talking as much as I am. This has a great set of features, its plug'n'play with either my MacBook or my MS Surface. It has many of the conference room features you look for in a speakphone including a quick touch mute button with hepatic feedback, call end and volume controls. One of the things I like most is the passthrough power -- so I can plug my USB-C charging cable into the spearkerphone and when the speakerphone is connected to the laptop is powers the laptop. There are also USB-A ports for my hardtokens and other work essentials as well as hdmi out.
The call quality has been excellent, I hear everyone on call better than I ever did on headsets or peripheral speakers and everyone hears me easily as well. I wouldn't necessarily use this as my only docking station (I have a thunderbolt-3 one I use for multiple monitors as well as this), but in its primary purpose as a speakerphone that also provides power and additional ports it is no short of amazing.

I think it provides good protection.

I was really happy with these! My toddler (over 2 yrs) thinks that they are super cute and is excited to ear them. I got them to work well with her tablet for trips in the car and they apparently provide good noise protection. Its really hard to tell how much protection they provide -- there was no labeling on the package. I had my older son try them on and he said he couldn't hear anything running around the house but absent any real testing you have to take it on faith that your little one will be ok with these on when going to an air show etc.
The head band has some high tension too, it really pushes the ear muffs on to their little heads. I suspect after an hour my little girl will start trying to pull them off, we haven't made it that long in tests.
Overall I like them and I think that as a parent this is something that you should get for your toddler, I just wish I hadmore confidence in how good they were and how much noise protection they were providing.

Great, but only if you NEED it

The Anti-Theft mount porvides a great deal of additional reassurance and protection for your Nest Wireless Outdoor Cam.
This is a Google-sanctioned third-party accessory and one that they specifically recommend if your camera greater than 2m above the ground. As I am mounting it at about that height I decided to try out the anti-theft bracket.
It does indeed provide additional security as it clamps down on your Cam and prevents it from being nicked or damaging itself on a long drop. I am however not gong to continue using it as this anti-theft device makes it too cumbersome for me to take down the camera to charge.
If you're worried about sticky fingers this will definitely be an effective deterrence, and in installation where you can plug in and aren't relying on the wireless capability I think it would make a lot of sense -- be warned it does make it really really difficult to remove to charge when you have a battery-based installation.

Works Well, Great Battery Life
on November 4, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru

The massager is great! It has 4 different setting (for pain, energy, calm or rest) that walk through manual or pre-programmed routines. I found the massaging to be restorative and much better than foam rollers or other self-massage devices I've used in the past. I've been using it for a month now, mostly for 5-10 minutes after running on my legs and lower back 4 times a week and the battery finally needed a boost this week.
While I find this to be a highly useful massage I do have a few observations on how it could be improved.
1) My primary use is recovery -- I don't see a recovery option and I'm always guessing which of the 4 options I really should be using.
2) The touch screen has a nice interface but its placed very close to the grip. When massaging your legs its very easy to inadvertently touch the screen, turning off the massage mid-work. Overall the ergonomics could use improvement beyond the touch screen placement. I do appreciate the included extension for working your back though!
3) When you first open it, the massage needs you to use your smart phone to connect the massage to wifi to download the latest firmware and programs massage routines. I found this setup clunky. This is the only use of WiFi on the massager so its got extra network connections and hardware on it that 99% of the time sholdn't be in use and it would've been much more straightforward to plug it in to a computer and sync it over the usb-c already present on the massager for charging
While those are three things that I wish could be improved I do find this to be a wonderful massager that I use everytime I workout. I would highly recommend it.

The essential accessory to your Surface Pro 8
on October 24, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru

Many have commented on the decision to make this an additional optional accessory instead of part of the core bundle with the Surface. You can use the surface without the signature keyboard, and the surface works great with a usb-c docking station, but in order to work on the go I wouldn't use anything else. If you think about the Surface as a tablet and compare to an iPad -- the OEM keyboard and pen from Microsoft is better than anything you can get for an iPad from Apple or on the secondary market.
I love the keyboard, especially with the ability to lay flat or prop it up by hiding the pen slot. The keys have great tactile feel and I find the placement of things like the function key to be ideal in Microsoft's layout. I can type at full speed and worry free in almost any environment.
What I've surprisingly found as enjoyable is the Slim Pen 2. Pens in general have really been places into a gimmick bucket when it comes to Windows, this is the first one where I feel like it's truly nicer to use a pen on the screen rather than the touch pad on the keyboard. It feels great in my hand, provides reasonable tactile and is easy to click on what I'm seeing. I don't necessarily care for the out of the box whiteboard functionality, but I love the double click to screencapture functionality -- as a Product Manager I'm often looking to mark up existing functionality or provides requirements based on things I'm screen capturing, and being able to quickly draw those up using the pen really makes my job easier.
Don't get caught up on if this should be included in the other box. Look at what's in this box and compare it to what's available for Windows or iOS devices and you'll see that this really is the best keyboard cover/pen combo out there.

The most productive go anywhere device you can get
on October 24, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
Microsoft provided me with this Surface Pro 8 in order to evaluate and provide an unbiased review. I find the Surface Pro 8 to be the most capable and portable device that I can use. If you're looking for a do-anything device, with ample (but less than advertised) battery and a portable form factor this is the thing to get.
I've taken multiple Zoom and Teams calls with the Surface and it has the best audio quality for teleconferences of any device I've used -- on all other laptops, desktops or tablets I've used there is an essential need to have a headset in order to hear and be heard. Both the mic and the speakers in the Surface provide clear call quality.
My work makes heavy use of the Office 365 suite, including Teams, OneDrive and Sharepoint and I can say that reviewing and editing multiple documents both in personal onedrive locations and in sharepont is great -- equal to or better to "business grade" devices that many of you are familiar with. Part of my job involves design work and those visually intensive applications also work well in the surface despite it's 13" size.
I was hesitant about a 13" device, but I haven't found the size to be a hinderance, and because its so small and lightweight its far easier to pack for travel or to hypothetically carry with me from conference room to conference room if I were back in the office.
I've used it without plugging in for a day and I can say that if you're actively working, reviewing powerpoints, updating spreadsheets, using web applications and Teams it won't make it quite through a work day -- but it will last over 6 hours. This means as long as you visit a desk at some point in the day to plugin you don't need to worry about bring a cord with you. Or if you want to goto the coffee shop or park to work you can leave the power at home.
The cost of a surface is clearly premium territory, but given the value add that it provides over even comparably prices Apple devices I find it to be well worth it.

The Nest Doorbell is the battery-powered video doorbell that works with any home. See what’s happening at your door from anywhere and get intelligent alerts about important activity, like when there’s a person, package, animal, or vehicle.* And because there are no wires, you can install it yourself. Nest Doorbell requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

Well thought out upgrade to Nest Hello
on September 27, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
Short takeaway: I feel overall this doorbell helps illustrate this awkward inbetween that Google finds itself in with the Nest lineup in what is otherwise the best wireless doorbell on the market.
On a feature and usability front the wireless doorbell packs a lot of great features, can be used on any door on your house with minimum installation effort and looks great doing it. I love the Activity Zones, integrations with my Google Home Speakers and using Nest Aware (with no additional per-unit cost) with the new doorbell. It is noticeability bigger than the original Nest Hello -- Google mentioned in a FAQ they sent reviewers that this is due to the inclusion of the batteries.
There are a few things that make this camera feel like one of the first products in a revamped Google Home -centric Nest approach that isn't fully at feature-parity with the Nest ecosystem its replacing -- yes that's right this doorbell does not work with the old Nest app etc. and only with Google Home. Right now some Nest devices can only be configured and receive notifications from Nest, while others only can use the Google Home app. So you must have both setup on your phone in order to get notifications at the front door with a Nest Hello and the side door with a Google Nest Doorbell Wireless. I'm also sad to note that Google Home app does not have a companion webpage or computer interface, only tablet/phone app. Google mentioned to reviewers that they know and are working on addressing this gap. Some of the configuration is less elegant and intuitive in it was in the legacy Nest interfaces.
Ultimately this camera lasts wire-free at any door you like with the ability to go weeks between charges (depending on how popular you are) and provides near instance notification to your phone when something is happening. The interface to the google home app and other new Google Nest devices that are within the Home app is tighter. If you're willing to look at the features that are here and keep in mind that some of the broader Nest -> Google Home unification challenges are being addressed this is a wicked solid bell.

The essential camera
on September 23, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
I'm sure a lot of people wonder why you need an extra device if you have one of the latest smart phones that take great photos and videos. Once you use a GoPro you will absolutely understand the difference in having a device designed completely around being the most superior camera on the planet.
GoPro's have developed a reputation for the ability to deliver high quality video when out and about performing extreme activities. It is a highly durable camera in a waterproof casing and, like earlier models, mounts easily to helmets, bikes, kayaks, surfboards, etc to capture video while you worry about doing instead of filming. I think what is surprising is the level of stabilization and image correction this version, the Hero 10 provides. This is thanks to the GP2 in camera processor. The image is cleaned up and image is corrected for smoother and more stable filming regardless of what you're doing.
One of the things that I found great was how easy the camera was to setup. All I had to do was drop the battery and a new SD card in the camera, and scan the included QR code with my phone. There were a couple clear steps to sync the camera to my phone and then upgrade the camera to the latest firmware. I was filming and syncing to the cloud less than 15 minutes from opening it up.
The Quik phone app has basic image and video editing abilities. I found these to be slightly better than say Google Photos, and made it really easy to put together highlight reals and other goods. Overall I think you need to upload videos to the cloud and use Adobe to really show the polish
In short, your videos and pictures look absolutely gorgeous using this GoPro, regardless of what you're doing and how you're holding/mounting the camera.

It knows the difference between people, animals, and vehicles, so you can get the alerts that are important to you. Listen and speak through the camera right from the Google Home app. Check in anytime with 24/7 live view.* If you miss a notification, you can always go back and see what happened with 3 hours of free event video history.* And it’s easy to install yourself – no outlet or wires required. pros and cons moving from Nest to Google Home
on September 10, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
The lead is that this is a nice camera and a welcome addition to my Google Home/Nest ecosystem. I'm very reluctant to get things that don't work with Nest as it's really become the foundation of my smart home platform and I like the Nest and Google Home smartphone applications.
The Camera is way smarter than my older Nest cams. I was reluctant to use one that doesn't allow for continuous recording. But the way that this camera stores events and uploads them as it can has allowed me to place it in a location far away from a wifi access point where its useful, and it uploads events and notifies as it can. It can do this well because its doing more on the camera itself than putting everything on the cloud and determining what is happening with cloud-based compute.
I was frustrated with the setup... This is the first camera/doorbell that I couldn't setup with Nest and had to use Google Home for and it did not go well. The setup should take 5 - 10 minutes and be scan and go easy but it took several hours and fiddling with my entire home so that the setup process wouldn't fail when it tried to find an assisting device. Once you get past this frustration everything worked well. But config should always be a step easier, not more frustrating that past releases and can't be ignored when scoring the review.

Quiet air filtration for any room
on July 7, 2021
Posted by: BostonBru
from Boston, MA
I've really liked using the Shark Air Purifier 4 for the past month. This system is really really quiet, it can run in the background of my office and is completely ignorable. The auto-setting where the air purifier detects your air quality and runs at the correct fan speed typically runs on low, with 44 dB of noise. My old air purifier that this replaced ran at 53 dB on low. Even when things get bad, the Shark with 4 smaller fans runs at 59 dBs which is way way lower than the 72 dBs of a one fan device.
It took a while (like a week) for the system to "learn" my room and provide me feedback other than 99 - 100 percent clean, I now get much more variable results that I trust a little more.
Ultimately this is a quest unit that seems to do a great job of detecting when air quality is going down and adjusting the fan speed to accommodate. I have it in a room that is around 160 sq ft and it responds FAST to changes and can clean out the room in less than 2 minutes -- I'm sure it could handle my larger living room (250 sq ft or so) in less than 5 minutes as well. I like the details information about the quality of the air it provides, including how clean as a percentage, how long it will take to clean the room, and how many small and micro particles are in the air.
I do worry about the cost of filters, my last air purifier was $$$$ to replace and I haven't seen the replacements for these available yet to know.
I love the 12 hour timer so I can set this at the beginning of my day on auto and just let it run without worrying about forgetting when I logout (easy to do since its so quiet!).
FYI: I live in a relatively small house with pets and kids where we cook from home.
I was surprised that this doesn't have Bluetooth or internet connectivity to manage the air purifier as a smart device. Overall it shouldn't be necessary although being able to schedule so this runs a little bit even on days that I'm away would be nice -- good for people to know before purchasing that the only connectivity this has is to its remote.

Does the GoPro 10 have the lighting capability to film indoor? I have the GoPro Hero 5. It’s awesome outdoors but is very records very poorly indoors. Wondering if this has changed on GoPro 10. Thanks.

I've used the Hero 10 in low light indoor situations and been thoroughly impressed with the output. I do notice a short wash out if I have a shot that goes from indoors to outdoors but it quickly updates to the new lighting condition.

How is the microphone with phone calls? Is the sound muffled or altered to the other line?

Its better than other head phones I've used but isn't ideal. If you're in a quiet office everything is great. They pick up less background noise then average but I had my wife use them while I called her on a walk and I could hear a lot of wind noise and she was a little "tin-ie"

Nest Doorbell (Wired) lets you know who’s there, so you never miss a thing. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and delivers HD video and bright, crisp images, even at night. It’s designed to show you everything at your doorstep — people head to toe or packages on the ground. And with 24/7 streaming, you can check in anytime. Or go back and look at a 3-hour snapshot history to see what happened.*

Will Google Hello do a better job in regards to lag (delay) and motion detection? I had another video doorbell (rhimes with Ding) which could not adequately connect to the wifi, terrable lag, poor motion detection (false alarms and missed live ones).

This may have more to do with your network than the actual doorchime.

I can say that I have a -59dB signal at the front door and the delay in the live feed on my phone is less than a second.
