In 1997, four of America's leading African-American stand-up comedians -- Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Bernie Mac, and Cedric The Entertainer -- joined forces for a concert tour that became one of the top money-earning attractions of recent years, consistently selling out 10,000 to 15,000 seat arenas from coast to coast. The Original Kings of Comedy captures the tour's rough and raunchy humor on film. The concert documentary was shot in February of 2000 during a two-night stand in Charlotte, North Carolina (which was the site of the tour's first date three years earlier). Spike Lee served as director.

One of the best stand up movie ever made, and I would put it second after Richard Pryor:Live on Sunset Strip of course. To me the best one was Bernie Mac than Cedric The Entertainer, Steve Harvey and D.L. Hughley, but they all performed with their own style and greatness.
What's great about it: Everybody was ridiculously funny
What's not so great: Nothing

Brown Sugar utilizes an impressive 1.85:1 widescreen anamorphic transfer that is virtually free of defects. The bright colors spring nicely from the screen, and little grain appears during the darker shots. The reverse side offers the pan-and-scan, 1.33:1 full-frame format. An impressive collection of hip-hop tunes dominates this soundtrack, and it booms powerfully from an effective 5.1 Channel Dolby Digital transfer. The sounds move well across the field and offer decent complexity. The disc also includes a decent number of supplements spread across both sides of the disc. The most significant one is a commentary from co-writer/director Rick Famuyiwa and editor Dirk Westervelt. Famuyiwa has a relaxed form of delivery that sometimes becomes dull, but he does provide some interesting statements. The other major extra features are four deleted scenes, which cover about six minutes and were mostly removed for pace issues, and two music videos. They are both excellent tracks -- "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop)" from Erykah Badu, featuring Common, and Mos Def's "Brown Sugar," featuring Faith Evans. The remaining supplements include a brief soundtrack spot and preview trailers, which offer widescreen transfers and decent stereo soundtracks.

A love letter to Hip/Hop

This is a typical date movie with a Hip/Hop remix, and no Puffy didn't have anything to do with it. If you love Hip/Hop like Sid (Lathan) does in this movie than you will enjoy this movie. Cabbie (Mos Def) is brilliant.
What's great about it: The whole vibe of mixing music and love
What's not so great: Nothing

Michae Bay has done it again

Finally Transformers came to the theaters and Michael Bay decides the unthinkable, he doesn't use that much special effects as other directors use, which is a good thing. Think about how cartoonish Power Rangers, Godzilla, Wild Wild West and others looked like with so much special effects. The tranforming looked almost real and the plot was just on point. Greatness. Okay but what was up with Anthony Anderson's role, comic relief..no, intelligence...umm no, romance...heck no. NO real meaning for the whole movie.
What's great about it: The tranforming
What's not so great: Anthony Anderson role had no point

If you love that Neo-Soul and Rap sound, than Ms. Wright is what you need to get. Yes, she will make feel her pain, her love, and just plain and simple you are gonna feel her
What's great about it: The best track is 'Free'

Ernest Dickerson's directorial debut Juice comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence. Although this Paramount release does an excellent job of presenting the film, the lack of extras and the high list price make this title difficult to recommend without some small reservations.

A great hood classic movie that is just greatness. The storyline is about friends trying to stay out of trouble, but end up making more trouble than they first start off.

Cursed claws its way to DVD with this theatrical version from Dimension Home Video. Also available in the recommended uncut version, the movie is presented in an anamorphic 2.40:1 widescreen picture and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound that both feature clear transfers and vivid quality. Extras include a promotional making-of, two featurettes on the effects, and then another clip about the editing of the film highlighting the fact that the flick was chopped up before release to garner a PG-13 rating. The "Becoming a Werewolf" featurette is slightly worthy of note since it features actor Jesse Eisenberg and effects man Greg Nicotero clowning around as they go through the process of creating the creature. As with the film, your appreciation for the throw-away clip probably hinges on your tolerance for Eisenberg, who can come off quite annoying to some, though the inclusion of at least something different on a DVD is always welcome. It's sad to see that the true story behind the troubled production wasn't delved into that much, but then again, it's not that surprising. Pick up the unrated version before this one, though this edition is an interesting look into the lengths that editors will go to to tame a film that was filmed to be especially bloody.

This movie had the making of good horror flick, but turned out to be a Jerry Springer episode. This movie is just weak, not scary and is everywhere. It doesn't really have storyline that stays on track.
What's great about it: The concept of the movie

Warner Brothers' presentation of Any Given Sunday is billed as a Special Edition Director's Cut and contains a handful of additional pieces of footage not seen theatrically. Visually, the film is very well presented. The colors are exceptionally bright, if a bit too red. This could have been the intention of director Oliver Stone, however, and not a fault of the transfer. The video is shown in an anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The details, especially in anamorphic mode, are extremely crisp. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is light on surround usage but full of pulse-pounding bass; each hit and tackle is rendered thunderous. Several special features are included: a documentary on the making of the film, an L.L. Cool J music video, trailer, and biographies. Unfortunately, there is no commentary. Any Given Sunday is also enhanced for DVD-ROMs with web events, chat-room access, Web-site links, reviews, and more. Although the extras are large in number, their quality is limited. As with any feature by a renowned director, some type of commentary would have been welcome. The trailer and bios are one-time views, if that, and the DVD-ROM features are hardly compelling. This DVD, however, is all about the presentation of the film. In this area it succeeds wonderfully. With added scenes, an incredible video transfer, and heavy-hitting sound, there is enough here for both fans of the film and newcomers to Stone's football opus.

Greatness, cast, director, and plot is just pure greatness. The way they had cameras all over the field was ingenius.
What's great about it: Jamie Foxx isn't just a comedian
What's not so great: Just a little bit too long

David S. Ward's college football drama The Program comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles, but the soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this inexpensive Disney/Buena Vista release boasts excellent sound and picture quality.

The misadventures of Han Solo

I guess I'm like most of the other critics on here that didn't see the TV series, but just like everyone else I feel the same way this is a great movie. I got on DVD and I will still watch it if it's on cable still. Yeah, I like it that much. The fight scenes are on point, and dare I say, "Greatness."

The DVD presentation of this cyber-centric thriller features a 2.35:1 letterboxed transfer, which has been enhanced for playback on widescreen monitors; the disc also boasts Dolby Digital 5.1 audio in both English and French. (In addition, the film is subtitled in English, French, and Spanish.) Director Dominic Sena contributes a bonus audio commentary track, while the DVD tacks on two short features on the production of the film, "The Making of Swordfish" and "The Effects in Focus," two unused alternate endings, and the original theatrical trailer. Appropriately enough, the disc also includes additional features that can be accessed on computers with DVD-ROM drives, among them a guide to hacking into secure computer files, and links to the film's websites.
