Much needed upgrade
on September 28, 2021
Posted by: Keyan
GoPro’s new Hero camera is here! While it maintains the same shape and style of the Hero 9 (the 10 uses the same batteries and attachments as the 9, with the exception of the max lens mod), GoPro finally updates the main cpu to the new GoPro GP2. GoPro claims this chip is twice as fast, and it shows. Combined with a new sensor, this is the best GoPro to date. The outgoing model, the Hero 9, had a lot of features and had the first full color front screen on a GoPro, allowing for easy selfies and vlogging. Unfortunately, this additional draw on the system along with all of the advanced processing for high resolutions and frame rates made the 9 very sluggish. The menus, in particular, were a source of frustration. Thankfully, the new processor fixes this problem and the 10 is extremely responsive, feeling like a modern cell phone.
The processor upgrade also unlocks even higher frame rate options and video processing is better. I felt that the 9 had some aggressive processing, for example 2.7k video looked strangely overworked and the end result was a loss of detail. Video on the 10 seems to be improved, color is better, low light performance is less noisy while still holding on to detail, and video is clearer and more natural looking. Linear video with or without horizon leveling are available across even more video modes, along with some crazy high frame rates for slo-mo video. Notably, 5.3k can now be linear with hypersmooth at 60fps, and 2.7k can go as high as 240! Hypersmooth is still one of the most incredible features of this camera. It is truly amazing how well it stabilizes video. Handheld on a boat, on a bike, or even on a roller coaster, it is like the camera is on a gimbal while not needing any accessories.
For stills, super photos (HDR and processed for more color and clarity) process very quickly with the new processor. Since this camera packs even more pixels on the sensor, low light performance is still not great. It’s just the limits of optical sensors. Outside, it works well enough, but you can tell this camera is really for video.
The lens also has a new hydrophobic coating. It’s kind of uncanny how well water beads up and falls away from the lens. Combined with waterproofing to 33 ft, this camera is built for action right out of the box. Speaking of, I am happy GoPro decided to continue the change they made with the 9 and the Hero 10 ships with a case that is big enough to hold the camera and several accessories. This reduces trash waste and adds value to the package.
There are also other nice things this camera can do – you can link it to your phone for live streaming, or to a PC to be a webcam. Media transfers over wireless are also much faster, which is a good thing considering how large the video files can get. I would recommend at least a 256gb micro sd card.
Overall, this is the best GoPro to date, and if you are looking for a action camera that can record epic video of your adventures, this is one to consider for sure.

Performance you can live with
on February 24, 2021
Posted by: Keyan
The Asus Zephyrus G15 promises to balance both worlds – being portable and easy to live with, while still offering compelling performance for gamers. Can this new model for 2021 deliver? Time to put it through its paces and find out.
Flipping open the cover on the suitcase style box reveals the G15, with the power supply tucked underneath along with some paperwork. After unwrapping the system from the protective plastic, you can immediately feel the premium quality of the build materials. The laptop feels and looks like a well machined high-end laptop. For a system aimed towards gaming, it is very thin, light, and understated. It doesn’t scream gaming, which is appreciated. The cover has a series of finely machined holes, with a holographic film behind them. At the right angles, a subtle rainbow effect shines through, which much like the rest of the design, shows you that under the graphite color exterior, something special lies underneath. The system has a good number of I/O options, 2 USB-A ports on each side, and 2 USB-C ports on the left that support DisplayPort and up to 100W of power delivery if you need to run the machine in a pinch in a lower power mode or charge the battery. All of the USB ports are the USB 3.1 Gen 2 10gbps type. Rounding out the I/O ports on the left are an HDMI port, wired ethernet, an analog audio jack with support for headsets, and power. On the right, a micro SD card reader and a Kensington style lock point if you need to secure this thing so it doesn’t take a field trip with your jealous friends.
Give the fingerprint reading power button a push wakes up this beast. As expected, you are at the windows guided setup in no time. A neat trick is that if the power button got a good read on your finger when you power on the laptop, it automatically logs you in using Windows Hello. Be sure to run Windows update before doing a lot with the system, as well as updating all apps in the store. There are several apps and drivers that are updated and are important to keeping the system running. This system comes with a minimal amount of included software, Asus Armoury Crate, My Asus, and Dolby Atmos audio. If you notice a slight resonance buzz in the speakers above about 50% volume, the Dolby Atmos audio app is the key to fixing it. Changing the setting to “dynamic” in the app seems to make it stop. Dolby Atmos for headphones is also available to provide spatial audio for headphones, which I find does a really good job of virtual positional audio.
Using Armoury Crate, you can manage the system settings, keyboard lighting, performance profiles, and other aspects of the system. This is also where the AI Noise cancellation settings can be found. This is a pretty neat trick – using the microphone array on the laptop, the G15 can provide noise cancellation for both your microphone and your headset, regardless of the capability of the headset you are using. While it won’t compete with the best ANC headsets, it certainly helped cut down on ambient noises, especially the system fans, which I couldn’t hear at all when gaming with the fans going full tilt. On battery, setting the system to silent drops the performance curve, but it runs cool with no fans going. There is still plenty of power on tap in this mode for web browsing, productivity, and watching videos, while maximizing battery life to an astounding 10 hours or so leveraging the high capacity battery in the G15.
The display on this system is another highlight. At 15.6”, the 2560x1440 resolution is a good match for the display size, with a high enough DPI that text and images are sharp and crisp. I noticed little variance in the panel with a grey background, overall colors pop and the lighting is very uniform. The display can push up to 165hz and supports G-sync for variable refresh rate support. The refresh rate and panel resolution pair very well with the RTX 3070 in this machine, allowing for high frame rates at full native resolution. Viewing angles are decent and colors don’t wash out badly in dark areas in games. One omission here is an integrated webcam in the display bezel. This allows for a very thin bezel and helps the compact footprint of this powerhouse, but in the age of the pandemic it means that if you must use video, you need an external webcam or a different device. As this machine is designed to perform many roles and be portable, this miss limits your ability to pack light if you need to do video from time to time.
The keyboard is not overly loud and has RGB backlighting in a single zone. It’s not an optical mechanical keyboard, but it’s certainly functional with good spacing between the keys. It has been comfortable to use as I write this review. Since it is only a single zone backlight, it does make some of the effects pretty silly looking, like the starfield one that would normally light up and fade individual keys only makes the entire keyboard flash and fade randomly. I just stuck with a steady on mode.
Under the surface lies the real power of this system. The Ryzen 9 5900HS in here is just incredibly fast. 8 cores with hyperthreading, this thing rips through any workload you can throw at it with ease. The CPU is coupled to the new Nvidia RTX 3070 Max-Q, which provides a balance between performance, power consumption, and thermals. The 3070 has 8GB of GDDR6, and the system has 16gb of memory installed. The memory is kind of an odd configuration – 8gb is soldered on to the motherboard, while 8gb is user replaceable. If the memory module is replaced with a different capacity, it will break dual-channel memory support, resulting in slower memory performance feeding the CPU. 512mb of the system memory is also dedicated to the integrated graphics chip in the CPU, which provides low power graphics for most common tasks, while the 3070 is reserved for high performance graphics like gaming. Even so, 15.5gb of memory is plenty for most common applications and games. The 1TB NVMe SSD in the system is fast – 1.6GB/sec write and 2.0GB/sec read. The speeds in these PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives are just incredible, almost acting like a permanent RAM instead of the slow spinning platters of yesteryear.
Gaming performance is great, especially considering the hardware and some tradeoffs that are made to keep this compact and light form-factor. For games that support DLSS, the performance can really get good. In Fortnite it can average about 120fps in DirectX 12 RTX with DLSS on balanced mode and all other details set to epic. Some of the latest titles with everything turned on can still tax it, however nothing is what I would call “unplayable” on this machine. It won’t match a desktop running the latest graphics cards, or some of the other larger gaming laptops, but for 1440p gaming it is more than adequate now and for the reasonable future. Given the relatively compact size, light weight, and understated style I would pick this laptop to be my gaming on the go platform without hesitation.
Overall, despite a couple of odd quirks, this is one of the most capable portable gaming laptops you can buy. It hits the sweet spot between performance, portability, and price, while looking great, and is highly recommended.

The best GoPro Hero Yet
on October 9, 2020
Posted by: Keyan
The GoPro Hero 9 is GoPro’s latest action camera, with some welcome new features and correcting one big mistake in the Hero 8 by bringing back the removable lens glass.
The first big change over past GoPro cameras is the packaging. Gone is the huge acrylic plastic box, and instead you get a case! This makes for less packaging waste, and the case isn’t half bad. My only complaint is that it is just kind of a big hole with no dividers, but some 1.5” Velcro cut to size straps fixed that, and it works great. Beyond that, you get the standard mix of a quick release mount, one adhesive base, charging cord, and battery.
The Hero 9 features a new sensor with more pixels than the previous Hero 7 or 8, allowing for more hypersmooth stability and availability (4K 60 linear is now possible) and 5k video at 30 FPS. Personally, 2.7k is still a resolution sweet spot in terms of file sizes, features, and quality, but having all of these options is nice. The low light performance with the higher density sensor is still just ok. In stills, I found the in-camera noise reduction completely crushed details like the pattern in a wood floor, even in decent indoor light. In video it’s ok but still not great. There are just limits that a small dense sensor can’t overcome. But this is a camera for outdoors, not for cave dwellers! And outside it really shines. Images are clear, and video is good. Be careful with the hypersmooth settings though, I found that setting them to the highest settings really hurt the final video quality. A 2.7k video at 60 FPS with high HS settings resulted in a video that looked like it was 1080p, at best. Be careful and only use the higher settings if really needed.
The other big improvement is the full color front screen that finally shows a preview of the image. This is great for selfies, vlogging, and using the GoPro at different angles. You can change this display to just information or off entirely from the menu. The back display works fine and is large and clear, however the touch sensitivity is a little buggy, often missing taps or swipes, and it is very slow to navigate. It’s definitely not as slick and intuitive as a smart phone. GoPro says they are aware of this issue and a planned firmware update will address the sensitivity issues at least. The camera also completely hard locked up on me once, requiring a battery pull to reset. You can tell the camera is new and has a few software kinks to work out, which GoPro generally does.
This camera takes the best things about the Hero 7, such as the removable lens, and the 8, with the flip down integrated camera mount bracket, and improves on them both with longer battery life, a new sensor, and a full color front screen. If you are in the market for an action camera, you should consider the Hero 9 on your short list.

Good party speaker
on October 6, 2020
Posted by: Keyan
The new Sony V13 is designed to be your all-in-one “compact” party speaker solution. It features Bluetooth, a mic/guitar input, FM tuner, CD player, USB port, and a stereo analog input for all of your party connection needs.
Unboxing the V13 you realize how relative a term like “compact” can be – this thing is still pretty big, standing almost 2 feet tall. It’s not too heavy though, coming in at about 17 pounds, with an easy carry handle on the back top so you can take it where the party is. It has a flip out mic holder for those crazy karaoke parties. It also has an IR remote and when connected via Bluetooth a companion app that allows for control of the unit. The app also allows for changing the color of the speaker light. The speaker light is a neat feature, although I wish it had a mode to just be on with a static color. The options are flashing, ambient which is a “breathing” effect through different colors, and a mode that reacts to the sounds the system is making, or off.
The system has different presets for different sound styles, as well as the ever present MEGA BASS button to really kick up the bass output. In my testing, I found that the flat (least altered) preset with mega bass on seemed to balance the oomph you expect from a speaker like this with the tweeters, without over stressing the unit. There were times on some of the other presets you could tell that the preset plus Mega Bass and the input sound pushed the system further than it was able to go, resulting in a muddy bass sound. The upward angle on the tweeters combined with the shaped cones around them really project sound well up and out around the system. It can be clearly heard outdoors over a good distance if turned up. The jet bass ports off of the woofer also help with sound projection in your room or outside.
I actually found this to be a great companion speaker to an outdoor TV. It has the power to really bring movies to life, while being built to be moved in and out easily.
Overall, this unit provides decent portability with good sound quality and can certainly liven up your party or outdoor music and movie experience. If you are looking for a speaker that can handle everything from Bluetooth to analog to CDs to Karaoke with just about every type of input you would need, this one should be on your list.

More Holes for More Flavor
on September 13, 2020
Posted by: Keyan
The Keurig K-Supreme is the latest full sized model from Keurig, featuring Multstream technology that is supposed to help more fully saturate the K-cups and pull out more flavor by punching 5 holes in the cups and running water through all of them. It also features a water tank that can be located to the side or behind the main unit, allowing for more flexibility to fit your space.
In the box are the unit, some instructions, and the filter set. I always use distilled water in coffee machines to avoid scale and the need for any kind of consumable filters, but it’s here if you need or want to use it. Setup and operation are simple. If you have used a Keurig or other instant coffee machine before this will be easy to figure out.
There are a couple of differences from the other full sized machine from Keurig, the K-Elite. The Supreme has no clock or scheduled start up, and has one fewer volume option (the Elite can do an espresso shot size, but not sure why you would use that in a coffee machine that is designed for volume). It also doesn’t have a dedicated button for hot water, but that button was redundant anyway as all you need to do is run the machine empty and press the big K button to have it put out hot water. I do like that the buttons now list the amount of liquid the machine is going to make, and the straight down direct loading of the cups is easier with less chance of dripping. The water tank is much more convenient, although slightly smaller. It has a handle for easy removal and refilling, and the adjustable position is really handy for fitting in different spaces. It is also shorter and more compact than the Elite, although the clearance required to open the lid is just slightly taller as it has to open fully to allow for the cups to be loaded. It still fits and opens under standard cabinets, and overall is a lot less “chunky” than the Elite.
Load it with water, and we are ready to go. The big test is if the Multistream technology actually makes a difference, especially on strong brews. It does seem to extract more flavor, allowing for a bolder cup (and more complete use of your K cups). It also works well for things like hot chocolates, allowing for a complete empty of the K cup.
Overall, the K-Supreme delivers on the promise of a more complete and stronger brew using the new Multstream technology. It’s also more compact and flexible than other full sized Keurig units with a simple and straightforward set of buttons to use to make it work. If you are in the market for a new machine, this one should be on your list.

Premium TV, fantastic value
on August 31, 2020
Posted by: Keyan
Hisense has come into the US TV with aggressive pricing and often budget panels that provide a good value to customers looking for an affordable low cost per inch TV that meets most of their needs. Hisense wasn’t really known for being a premium TV brand until the introduction last year of the H9F series, which is improved upon in this year’s H9G. How well does this new TV do, and does it trade off too many things for its low price compared to the competition? Let’s take a look…
Unboxing this 65” class panel is pretty straightforward - it’s a huge box with the requisite styrofoam, higher density foam in front of the display, and display covers. One little thing to note, the TV comes with two side protector panels taped to the display, do not remove those until the TV is set up in its final position. There are numerous warnings in the manuals and packaging that since this TV has almost no bezel, that you need to take caution not to put too much pressure on the display panel. That is the price we pay for looks..which are very good. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean this TV looks. A sleek, cut steel bottom bezel with almost no bezel on the sides or top, and a very understated Hisense logo on the bottom make this one good looking TV that should fit in any décor. I’m very impressed with the look.
Once unboxed and in position, it’s time to set it up! I wall mounted it and there are two low profile feet in the box for those who want to set it on something. Powering on the TV it starts though a series of setup steps, as an Android TV you can use an android phone to set up the TV, or enter details like wireless networking manually using the remote. The remote is pretty basic, but does have a mic that can be used with the google assistant, which is built in. Since this is an Android TV with Google assistant, you will need a Google account to really use this TV. Many people have one, but it is something to consider if you really don’t like Google or something. Once connected, the TV detects a couple of updates to the system software, once applied you are up and running!
Even during setup, you can tell that this TV is probably different from many you have seen. It’s capable of incredible brightness. With a panel that is a full 1000 nits at peak, and a dense full array backlighting grid, it really is something to see if you haven’t seen a TV that can do this before. What it means is that, especially when displaying HDR and Dolby Vision content, light sources actually have luminance. The opening and ending of Toy Story 4, with its excellent lighting, is a great example of what this set and Dolby Vision can do. It’s as if the lights are actually shining in the room with you. While this might sound like it would be too bright, it really isn’t and the content pops in a way that not even a movie theater can fully duplicate. I would suggest having some kind of bias or ambient lights though if you are planning to use this TV in total darkness. It also has modes that limit the lighting range in case it is too intense.
I found the picture overall to be excellent. There is minimal “dirty screen effect”, with a very uniform picture, especially in a panel in this price range. 4K HDR and Dolby Vision content really shines. The panel is clear and bright. Gaming also looks great, although some HDR games may need to be recalibrated to not be overly dark with the dynamic range the TV can handle. The TV doesn’t have the strongest upscaler for regular cable HD content, although it looks good enough, and cable TV now is so compressed that there is only so much any upscaling engine can do. You’d be hard pressed to find a competitor TV that looks this good at this price point, and to get a better one is going to cost about twice as much. Few people would be able to see the difference. While it can’t quite compete with an OLED for black level detail, it does blow them away in peak brightness, won’t burn in, and costs about a third of the price of those displays. I also didn’t notice much of an issue with light blooming around brighter light sources, again a feature of a more densely packed full array backlight.
The panel in this TV is a true 120hz refresh rate capable panel, which helps with reducing lag and motion blur. It has 4 HDMI ports and optical output for connections to your gear. Sadly, this TV does not feature any HDMI 2.1 ports, so connecting it to a gaming console that can do 120hz isn’t an option. It also doesn’t support variable refresh rates or automatic low latency modes. That said, gaming modes did seem to have low input lag and it performs well for 4K and 4K HDR gaming off of an Xbox One X. One note, to get the Xbox to enable HDR gaming, the picture menu has to be configured for enhanced HDMI 2.0 Format instead of standard. I found the motion enhancement modes to work about as well as expected – meaning I ended up turning them off. The oddly irregular motion issues where content seems to switch from native frame rates to the enhanced interpolated ones are sometimes noticeable, and one member of my household gets almost motion sick with ultra high frame rates, so we turn it off. It can be tuned and adjusted though if it’s something you would like to use. The HDMI settings for HDR input, motion controls, and modes are all pretty much trial and error because inexplicably there is no full user manual out for this TV yet. All that seems to be available is the quick start guide. It’s really challenging to know what to find or what some of the settings mean when there isn’t a manual published on Hisense’s support site, even though it is referenced in the quick start guide. I can’t knock the TV set for this, but Hisense needs to get a manual out ASAP for this TV.
The TV speakers are passable. They were a little buzzy with an odd resonance sound for the default sounds the TV makes when going through the menus, which wasn’t great. A sound bar or home theater setup is recommended as always for a better sound experience.
The Android OS is decent for a Smart TV. It at least has a complete app and operating system ecosystem behind it, so it will be updated frequently and be current for a long time, helping to future proof the set. Having far field voice control and the Google Assistant is handy, especially for turning off the set when it’s left on accidentally. There is also a physical switch to turn off the microphones if this is a feature you don’t want active, which will help those with privacy concerns.
Overall, for the money, this TV is amazing. It’s sure to wow your friends (when they can come back to your house) and most people wouldn’t be able to tell this set from one costing two or three times as much. It’s feature packed (although the core gamer crowd might want some of the latest HDMI features) and is an excellent value. I’d recommend it for anyone wanting a very capable TV at a price that is hard to believe.

Great sound and comfort
on August 13, 2020
Posted by: Keyan
The Razer Blackshark V2 is a wired headset with esports gamers in mind. It has a lot of features, including a new headphone driver design and an included USB sound card with THX Spatial audio. Does it live up to the hype, and can it be worn for hours without making your head feel like it’s being crushed by the Mountain? Let’s find out!
Opening the box, there is a bit of paperwork, and then the headset, cable, and USB sound card all attached together in a drawstring bag. Even though it looks like the cable might pull out of the headset, don’t try! It’s permanently attached to the headset. The cable has a higher quality braided jacket, but I personally really hate attached cables. It makes the entire headset dependent on that cable not getting a short in it. It also means you can’t detach it for travel, so you have to have a case or the included bag with space off of the ear cup to pack it. Finally, you can’t put on a shorter or longer cable (without an extension) to suit your setup, if you use a controller for audio, you will need to use the attached cinch on the cable to control the slack.
Moving on from my annoyance with the cable, the headset has a lot going for it. The controls on the left ear cup are easy to use, with a detent at 50% volume so you know where you are easily. It also has a push button mute/unmute. The headband is nicely wrapped with soft material on the top and memory foam on the bottom. The adjustment is interesting – it is just a pull down to adjust like most other headsets, but there are two thin black steel wires that connect to the ear up hinges. It doesn’t allow the ear cups to pivot to lay flat, but it’s extremely light and allows more air circulation around the ear cushions. Wearing the headset is a dream. I actually forget I’m wearing them. They are incredibly light and the clamping strength needed to hold them is so low that you can wear them for hours without a headache. The memory foam ear cushions just form to your head and it all feels right without getting hot.
Plugging in the USB sound card automatically launches the Razer Synapse software installer. Having to create an account is mildly annoying, but so common now that you barely notice. The software gives a lot of control over the sound and microphone, and the ability to tune the THX spatial audio to different apps or games, with automatic audio profile switching. The card will work with any headset, so if you decide to use something else some day you can still retain control over your audio. It adds a lot to the value of the kit.
The microphone is good, comms were reported as clear and easy to understand by others I was playing with. One little thing – when the ambient noise reduction option was enabled, it dropped my mic volume overall, so I was harder to hear speaking with my natural voice level. No one reported any noise getting in anyway, so I left this setting off. The software/sound card also allow the mic audio to be fed back into the headset, avoiding the “shouting into a cave” effect when wearing fully enclosed over the ear headsets.
Finally, the audio! Razer promises a best of all worlds with the titanium coated triforce drivers in the headset. The theory is that different parts of the single driver diaphragm have their own tuning, so the one driver can provide better sound for the highs, mids, and lows. Does it work? Yeah. The sound quality is really great, playing games or listening to music, this headset can do it all. At this price point, it is a great value. It also does a good job of isolating outside noise without fully active cancellation. I like ANC in the right situation, but it comes with a ton of tradeoffs (and more cost) and isn’t needed for most gaming environments.
The spatial audio effects work very well – using both the THX audio included with the sound card, and Dolby Atmos for Headphones on my Xbox, the simulated surround sound is really convincing. Spatial audio needs well balanced and capable drivers to work right, and it works great here. Compared to my other headset (in the same price range), which lacks bass, it is much easier to pinpoint sounds with this headset using the same sound card and spatial audio settings.
Overall, at this price point, this headset is fantastic. The Triforce drivers are the real deal, and the included usb sound card gives a lot of control. The headset would be pretty close to perfect if the cable wasn’t permanently attached. It’s enough of an issue for me that it cost the headset a star, but I would still recommend it for the sound quality and incredible comfort.

Convenient
on July 10, 2020

This cordless hand mixer from Kitchenaid offers a lot of performance in a convenient cordless package. The mixer features 7 speeds and comes with a set of wire mixer paddles and the power adapter. It’s very straightforward to set up, just make sure the correct paddle is going into the correct hole!
Being all DC powered, the unit is quiet and the cordless operation super flexible. The unit doesn’t quite have as much raw speed or torque as a corded mixer or the flexibility of using different paddle types. It does have enough power to shred cooked chicken breast for a pulled chicken BBQ (thanks Alton Brown) and for most typical tasks like mixing batter or light dough. Whipping cream or mixing thick dough or other similar tasks might be better suited for a corded hand mixer or a stand mixer that offer more speed and torque.
One minor quibble is that I wish the charging port was some form of USB instead of a proprietary port and power supply, if that cord shorts or you have an issue the mixer is pretty much dead. Also having a sealed internal battery that will wear out means this unit isn’t going to last forever like your grandma’s old one from 1970 that still keeps going.
Overall, this is a capable mixer with cordless convenience that will meet most people’s needs.

Speed in a small size
on July 6, 2020
Posted by: Keyan
The Samsung T7 is a great little NVMe drive that uses up to USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10gbps), allowing for insane read/writes of around a gigabyte a second. It’s likely to be the fastest drive in your PC! My PC could “only” push about 560MB/sec to or from the drive as the other drives in my system weren’t up to that speed and my PC has USB 3.1 gen 2. Build quality is also nice, with a compact metal casing that is about the size of a credit card. It is small and thin and can be packed away for travel easily. The box also comes with two (short) USB cables, one that is USB C to C, and the other the more traditional USB A to C. On the drive, there is an installer for Samsung security and firmware updating software. The drive shipped with the latest firmware, so I didn’t need to update that. The security software allows you to set a password on the drive so it is encrypted and protected. I don’t plan on traveling with it or carrying private documents, so I didn’t choose to enable it, but it’s there if you need it.
The drive also works great on an iPad Pro running iPad OS, it shows up as a drive and the files can be accessed from the Files App, it streamed a 2.7k 60fps video with no issues at all, so this gives people who use their iPads as a primary compute device a high performance, compact option for storing more data.
I also plugged it into an Xbox One X…and it seems to make a real difference in load times vs the 4TB external spinning drive I have on it normally. Game loads are much faster, including Fortnite and Forza Horizon 4. With the upcoming Xbox Series X also having a high speed USB port on it, this drive will compliment it well for your existing titles, likely decreasing load times even more for your existing Xbox library.

Good Cordless Vac, high price
on June 1, 2020
Posted by: Keyan
LG has been making vacuums for several years now. One of their more interesting inventions has been the “Kompressor” technology – on larger corded vacs this involves a paddle that moves in the dust bin and compresses the dirt into a harder cake, allowing for both extra capacity before the vac is full and easier clean up when it’s time to empty the bin. This new cordless vacuum from LG also has the “Kompressor” tag on it, but does it provide the advantages of the corded version, and does this vac justify the high price? Let’s take look and find out.
In the box is the stand, the power head with an extending wand, two batteries, a crevice tool, a combination tool with a retractable brush, a cleaning brush for the vacuum itself, and a “power punch” tool for upholstery. A couple of snaps and the stand is assembled, and the same for the vacuum with the power head on it. Easy to put together. I like the stand – other brands either have a wall mount that needs to have holes put in the wall and isn’t very portable, or don’t really come with a stand at all. This stand is very clever – it has a bay below where the vacuum attaches to charge the second battery, spots for the tools, and room on the foot of the stand for the power punch head. I REALLY like that it can charge both batteries so they are ready to go. It only charges one at a time, (starting with the one in the vacuum, once that is done it starts charging the other in the stand automatically) but knowing that both are ready to go for a dirty day is very handy.
The vacuum itself is nicely laid out. It has three buttons – power, a - and a + button. There is also a battery indictor on the front, the Kompressor lever, and the releases for the bin and battery. Pressing and holding the - button turns on the wireless, because, everything needs wireless I guess. There is an app but it requires an account with LG. I don’t really see the need to see my cleaning history, and this seems like a thinly veiled data mining expedition that really benefits LG by sending them details of how consumers are using their vacs and not giving you much in return. But it’s there if you want to track if the kids were really doing their chores and vacuuming the house. Fortunately, that feature is 100% optional. Moving on, this vacuum has a power button and not a momentary trigger. The market leader still insists on a trigger and it’s difficult to keep holding it down for extended cleaning sessions or at certain angles, so I am glad to see a proper on and off control here. During operation, the - and + buttons decrease or increase the suction power. On the normal mode, this thing really can go for a LONG time, LG states 40 min with the power head or up to a full hour with the crevice tools, which is pretty crazy. I had a hard time running it down with the power head and it did a good job on hardwood floors and area rugs. Using the + button gives you more power but with reduced run time. Then there is Turbo mode. Pressing and holding the + button for 3 seconds moves this thing into turbo mode, where it sounds like a corded vacuum and the suction is crazy high. It’s truly insane, but so is the run time drop, the battery will last less than 10 mins in this mode so it’s only for extreme cases. On the normal modes this vacuum is very quiet (for a vacuum) and won’t wake up the house.
Having owned an LG Kompressor corded vac for many years, I found the “Kompressor” in this vacuum to not be quite as useful. It’s a manual lever that needs to be pushed down to compress the dirt. It does allow the debris in the bin to be compressed, and it also cleans off the holes around the cyclone area, which is handy, but it would have been cool if this had been powered or automatic in some way. It also doesn’t go all the way down to the bottom of the bin for emptying, and I’ve still had to reach in and pull out some of the pet hair dirt. At least it’s all right there and not hiding up high in the vacuum requiring an expedition to get it out.
The extending wand that is included with this vacuum is another feature that I found very useful. It keeps the vac shorter for storage and I found that the shortest setting is great for stairs, no need to bend over at the dreaded “stair angle” or be on hands and knees forever while getting the stairs clean. At full extension it was comfortable for me, a tall guy, to use on the floor. The power head is also not overly heavy and very maneuverable. The vacuum overall is comfortable to use for an extended time. The filters are also interesting, the 3 components, including the cyclone system, being removable to be washed. This lets you really get the system cleaned out to keep it at top performance. It also exhausts air up and away, keeping you from blowing air on what you are trying to clean or back at you. The power punch tool for upolstry is different from the turbo heads that are typically on a vacuum. It vibrates instead of having a power roller to “punch” the dirt out of whatever you are cleaning. It seemed to do a fine job, and it won’t get bound up in loose or long pile surfaces or wear on them as much as a spinning turbo head will do.
Overall, this is a very capable vacuum that has a number of features that make it easy to use and store. It has enough power for everything that should be encountered in a household and several user-friendly features. Being able to charge both batteries in the stand along with store the accessories without holes in the walls is welcome, as is the ability to tear it down and really clean it out. I also personally much prefer the toggle power button on this vac to a trigger that must be held down. The Kompressor technology, while not quite as useful as it is in the corded LG vacs, still offers advantages over not having it at all. Having two batteries in the kit along with the tools helps justify the high price of this vac, but it still feels like a lot of money for a vacuum, which brings it to the rating I gave it.

Treyarch (noobs) FTL - A sorry attempt to copy MW2
By Brewcrew414 from Milwaukee, WI
Wow!!.....I am completely amazed at how terrible this game is. First of all, the campaign mode is just a joke. Absolutely boring. Nothing about campaign mode is interesting or keeps my attention at all. OH WOW the Cold War, how exciting!!! Well if you have a weak campaign mode, then maybe your online mode might be able to make the game worth it, right? NOT EVEN CLOSE The PSN servers dedicated to CODBO are a complete joke. Its like playing on dial up. Ive gone back and occasionally played MW2 and those servers are lag free. If you like a lag fest, then you'll live BO online. Nothing makes sense on CODBO online. People shooting you in mid air, super strong smgs, numerous disconnections and hot migrations, and hip fire is the easiest way to get kills? If you think its my connection that makes me lag, its not. I'm running a cable connection maxing out @ 18-20mbps on a direct connect. The online mode is so congested but I feel like the game itself lags up my ps3. In fact only with BOs has my PS3 froze up many many times, at least 1 or 2 times a week!! It feels like there is so much loading going on that its burning my PS3 up. Even the opening credits are a strain on my PS3 and it reads the HDD 4 separate times before I can actually start to look for a game! Why is there so much load time when the graphics are definitely not better than CODMW2? The guns look and feel like toys. It sounds like I'm shooting an airsoft gun. So what sucks about the game so far....campaign, originality, graphics, sounds, unrealistic physics, and ONLINE LAG. Yes its only been a month since the game has been out but with the millions of dollars that they've made off of the sales of the game and the anticipation and success of the previous CODs the least they could do it make it work properly. Zombies mode is the ONLY thing that BOs has going for it. Thanks for that. Overall a much lamer version of MW2 and not worth the $60. I dare you to rent it to see how terrible it is. I cant wait for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 because its going to be made by the real game developers who reinvented the COD franchise. Oh if you think that I'm not credible gamer, here are my legit stats - MW2 2.3 kill/death ratio @ 150,000 kills with a win percentage of 3.0+. Black Ops 1.9 kill/death ratio at 15,000 kills with a win percentage of 3.0+.
Below are pictures of the screen when it froze.
Not even MW3 will be..

Guys listen!! Don't get it.
By Anonymousapplecollector from Savannah
You guys need to stop and listen to me and that other person. He's right, this device is terrible. I own lots of products from apple and this is so far the worst device I've ever own in my life. I've been having the first gen 160gb and it is totally worth it than this, you can actually buy and own instead of just only able to rent really expensive movies. I got this as a bd gift cause my dad knows I'm a big apple collector so I felt really sorry for him and gave it back so he can return it. So do yourself a favor and just save up $50 extra and get the 1st gen apple tv you won't be disappointed.
Ever hear of home sharing?
December 15, 2010
Apparently you didn't actually bother to learn how to use it. You can enable home sharing from iTunes running on your home computer and share your entire iTunes library with this device. If you really want to own a movie, you can buy it through iTunes on your computer and then stream it wirelessly to the Apple TV. This gives you access to (probably) a much, much larger amount of storage than what the older Apple TV had.

Good camera, but to close to the T2i
By da12 from California
Let me start by saying I'm not a professional, but I have owned the T2i, the 50d and now the 60d. I've also rented and tested the 7d and 5d. Over the years I've read several books and got some tutoring from a professional photographer and I feel I know DSLR's pretty well. I have many amazing pictures with all the above cameras. Here is my opinion after owning the 60d.
1. The picture quality of the 50d, 60d and t2i and 7d are identical. I can't find a difference. I did see a considerable difference when I used the 5d though.
2. The video quality of all the cameras seemed pretty equal.
3. I used heavy lenses on all the cameras. No difference in strength. They're all great. I do like the lightweight of the t2i for backpacking though.
4.The 60d has an okay frame rate. Faster than the 5d and t2i. It's faster frame rate is minor and at my sons soccer games, the t2i caught just a many "great" shots. Now when I used the 7d, it did give me quite a few more shots to choose from. I have to admit, for action 7d is more than a step above.
5. Yes the autofocus does have cross type on the 60d but I've never had focusing issues from the t2i, 60d or 7d or 5d. I also never noticed a difference from old 50d vs the t2i. In fact, I didn't even notice a difference between the 7d and the t2i. Maybe in low light the 7d's 19 point is better, but like I said before, I've never had any focusing issues with the 9 point center cross only system on the t2i. Just my opinion, it's all hype.
6.Battery, the t2i's battery lasted me for many hundreds of pics and videos on my last vacation of 3 days. If I was to take to many more, I probably would of needed another battery with any camera.
7. I like the simple buttons on the t2i. I don't understand why people like the controls of the more expensive cameras. After you get used to the t2i, its the fastest....at least for me.
8. Last: Price - The t2i is a bit less than 2/3's the cost of the 60d. Why spend more unless you do lots of action (7d) or want ultra high quality (5d).
In closing, for me it's all about value. The 60d is in a bad position. The expensive middle area. Missing many great features of it's big brothers, the 5d and 7d, and no real "MAJOR" improvement from the t2i. The t2i is more than worth it's price. Probably the best ever value for it's price tag. The 7d is great but a little pricey. It is great for action though. After either owning or testing all the above cameras, my next purchase will be the 5d. Now that camera's full frame sensor is really an improvement. Much sharper and vivid detail. I've learned that first hand.
By the way I returned the 60d to save for the 5d.
I have to disagree
March 21, 2011
As my detailed review points out, there are a lot of pros to the 60D vs even the new rebel T3i. For starters, it has a kit lens that retails for more than twice what the kit lens with the Rebel's come with. Additionally, the shutter is faster, has a secondary LCD screen, better controls (I like the dual dial), better AF system, and a bunch of other things that if you just look at the flashy front page spec sheet you won't see, but when you really get into using the camera you will appreciate. It also has a "C" mode on the dial for Custom - in this mode you can define which features are auto, which are manual, etc, and gives you another place to set up options. The price difference between the Rebel and the 60D (since the 60D seems to be pretty much on perpetual sale now with Best Buy) is about $300 - which is the price difference in the kit lens alone, and you get a lot of extra features over the Rebel.

Steep learning curve
By Picker57 from Fort Collins, CO
I have an extensive history with film SLR's, and with some very capable point-n-shoot digitals. This camera seems capable of a lot of things, many of which don't interest me. However some commonplace things seem more awkward than they should. Example: the flip-out viewer (which I love with my Canon A640) won't work jointly with the regular viewfinder. Also, resetting ISO, aperture, etc. is not nearly as intuitive as I'd like (again, this is compared to my old Canon EF film SLR).
The camera's manual is really pretty good. I purchased a "field guide" as well, and it's pretty useless.
I'm still going through a learning curve with the kit lens (Canon's 18-135mm). So far I'm not impressed, at least when comparing to my old Canon FD lenses.
Expected behavior..
May 3, 2011
This camera is a SLR - so the Mirror will flip up and the shutter will open for video mode. When the mirror is flipped up it blocks the viewfinder to prevent extraneous light from entering the camera body and so it is out of the path of the light as it enters the camera and reaches the sensor. This is how they all work, with the exception of the translucent mirror on some of the newer Sony's - however that mirror comes with a cost of losing about 1/3 of the light entering the camera from reaching the sensor, and if dust gathers on the mirror it also shows up in your pictures...
You are using a kit lens - if you had expensive lenses on old Film camera you should expect different results. Also with film cameras the pictures you get are often not blown up to screen size, or zoomed in to do some "pixel peeping" looking for imperfections.

Does not hold zoom lens
By photon
This bag was purchased as part of a package deal best buy was offering. The bag is not large enough for the lenses that were purchased as part of the package. The front flap on the bag serves no purpose, other than being an annoyance. There are a limited number of ways to rearrange the storage area. Very dissappointed that best buy would include a bag in a package that would not hold the items purchased.
Yes it does
May 6, 2011
Watch the product video on Lowpro's website - the front flap is for securing the zippers so you can gain access to the camera while still having the bag slung over one shoulder and not have a zipper run and open the bag all the way inadvertently.

Durable DSLR
By bobbybilly from Chicago
I was going back and forth between the 60D and the 7D. Besides the $600ish price difference what is the real difference to the "typical" consumer? While I was prepared to purchase the 7D, I was concerned about the size (and secondly for me the weight). After handling the 7D I realized it was a significantly more robust camera than the 60D. A bit more than I was looking for as a hobbyist photographer. That being said, the 60D still has a very full and robust feel and is comfortable to hold. Its predecesor, the 50D (which I have not handled), had a metal body (which also added weight). The 60D is not metal but still feels very stable and firm, not cheap by any means. I don't think the non-metal case is an issue, but rather a benfit, because it makes it lighter.
As I learned from reading specs. on other websites, the 7D, 60D, and Rebel T3i have the EXACT same 18 megapixel image sensor. In image controlled image tests on these websites, it is pointed out that image quality between these three cameras will be almost the same.
The main difference between i see between these cameras is the ability to cusomize both menu and button functions, and customize how you shoot your photos. The 7D, however is significantly more advanced in that it has Dual processors (not image sensors), which will result in much faster image processing, and therefore more photos per second. Also, the 7D also has superior autofocus capabilities (19 points vs 9) which will help in focusing. Of course faster is always better, the 60D has been super fast for me (5.3 frames per second), and I havent had any focusing problems.
Another thing pointed out by websites and people I know is that the lens you attatch will have more effect on the photo quality than the actual camera body. This makes sense, especially considering 3 cameras with the same image sensor..
I was concerned about the 18mm-135mm lens in the kit. I am glad that I purchased the kit with the lens. Although it does feel "cheep" (I knew this when I purchased) it does seem to take great photos. It is noisy (uses a DC motor, like a little toy car sound), but still think it is worth it in the "kit". I probably wouldnt pay the $500 this lens sells for separately, but with the kit, it is a good value if you do not have many or any lenses.Takes better pictures than the way it feels.
Considering this was my first DSLR I decided to purchase the 60D Kit, and spend the extra money on purchasing "better" quality lenses. I have purchased the 70-300mm USM (quiet) tele-zoom lens plus the 60d kit for less than the 7D kit with one lens.
Although, I never planned to use it, I was however very disapointed with the LiveView (use the LCD screen instead of the viewfinder to take pictures) on the 60D (don't know about the others). It takes too long to focus in this mode. Because it is so SLOW (compared to regular viewfinder), I find it a useless function.
Some review have not liked the lack of tactical feedback from the buttons (button are not overly responsive). Although I can see how some may not like the button response, they are still quite usable, and it is not a big deal to me.
Of course there are other differences, but I found the main broad differences are as follows. Since all have the exact same image sensors:
-T3i is good for budget consious who is not overly concerned with custimization or options when taking photos (3.7 frames per second)
-60D has more options, and is faster than the T3i (5.3 frames per second)
-7D is much faster at processing and focussing camera for those who want specific photo options available to them. (8 frames per second)
Switch the focus mode
May 25, 2011
Switch the live view focus to quick mode. It will flip the mirror back down and use the phase array, and then flick the mirror back up. Much faster.

Are you pressing the release button before trying to move it? Also I am not sure there is a hotshoe flash on the planet that can maintain 8 FPS. The full speed burst rate of the 7D is not designed for use with flash.

A must for your dSLR
By Keyan
A hotshoe flash is a must for a dSLR camera to get the best pictures, especially if you are going to do any kind of indoor photography or long distance shots outside. I find this one to be the best one for my 60D. It is not as large as the 580, and since the 60D can be a wireless flash controller I don't need the 580 to be a command unit for that either. The construction is rugged and the case is nice ballistic nylon and fits it well.
These flashes are very advanced and can even receive zoom data from your lens to adjust the power and focus of the flash appropriately. Additionally, it has a red AF assist light that puts out a grid on your subject allowing the AF system in the camera to have an ideal pattern to use for focusing. This is vastly improved over the strobe effect the pop-up flash will use for AF assist. It is also fully articulated and can be fired in just about any direction allowing for some really neat bounce flash effects. Additionally, it can be used wirelessly to provide off-camera flash and even comes with a stand (that slips into its own pocket in the case!) for this purpose. Some Canon cameras can act as a controller without a master unit, while others will require either a 580 or the hotshoe wireless master unit for this ability.
Recycle time is very, very fast, able to fire several times a second with no noticeable whine as the capacitors charge up. I would suggest some high discharge rate (not the same as mAH capacity) NiMH batteries to feed this flash unit as quickly as possible so it is always ready.
Overall, this is a must have if you are serious about taking indoor and flash photography to the next level to with your dSLR.

I have used it with the wireless controller built into the 60D. It works very well indoors, outside you need to have it on a line of sight with the camera for it to work well. Since I use it almost entirely inside that isn't much of a concern for me.

Digital Camera mirrors the SLR of Old
By kamuizot from North Carolina
I've used Canon cameras for a long time. 10 years ago I bought a Sony Digital and haven't used film ever since. That Sony has served me well, but when it came time to upgrade to the Digital SLR I found comfort in the fact that the new cameras used the basic layout of the old film cameras. With this camera I know where to look for things like Shutter speed and F-stop adjustments. I know where the focal sensors are and how to adjust them as well even though I just bought this camera. I did not find this true when I experimented with a friends new Nikon digital SLR. This isn't a negative reflection on Nikon, I simply know Canon cameras better and I'm glad to see that Canon kept the basic layout no matter how much more complex these cameras have become.
This camera is obviously more complex than the old film cameras. I've been trying to get comfortable with all the bells and whistles this camera will do. However, the basic shooting and adjusting needed to take good pictures is easy to find and I love how easily I can shoot, adjust, shoot and adjust.
I don't like the software that comes with this camera. It isn't at all easy to use. The raw files, CR2, is also something of a pain. I can only open them with the Canon software and they are really big files to keep if I am rarely going to use them.
I love the flip out screen, but I worry that I'm going to break it off in a moment of distraction.
RAW isn't that hard..

There are lots of software options that can read RAW files, even windows can download a codec so you can preview them just like any other jpeg. All products from Adobe (Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, CS5, etc) can handle the RAW files with ease.
They aren't designed to be small, they are the completely uncompressed image directly from the Camera's sensor. JPEG images lose some of the picture data as part of the compression, RAW files don't.

This extremely convenient Digital Sound Projector is low profile enough to fit neatly in front of a TV and is 3D compatible (HDMI V.1.4a). Low profile soundbar allows positioning in front of most TVs for a neat and compact AV system. Subwoofer is also convenient can be placed vertically or horizontally. Digital Sound Projector technology provides true surround sound for maximum enjoyment.

I hope I got a bad one
By CJ1969 from Chicago, IL
Honestly, this things sounded even worse than just hooking a cheap pair of PC speakers up to my TV. I sincerely hope I just got a bad one. It was tinny, thin sound. I didn't even bother hooking up the subwoofer after I heard the soundbar by itself. HORRIBLE.
The sub is essential..

The subwoofer also includes the woofers and props up the mids, you really should have bothered to listen to the entire unit before making a judgement call.

The spec list says 2*2.5W speakers. It should be 4 speakers and 2 tweeters according to the asus website???? Does this have the 90 Whr battery?

I wouldn't fully trust the best buy spec sheet. Yes, it has the 90 Whr battery. On the silent performance setting, it can get about 10 hours of run time.

Does the lid have some color inside some of the dots? I know this one doesn't have an animated lid, but several pictures show the lid with streaks of colors in it, but the one I have seen in person appeared to be solid grey (with no color in the dots).

There is a holographic film under most of the dots. When the light catches it just right, you'll see a pop of rainbow color peek through. It's pretty cool.

Does this have metal gears?

I would say no. The attachment points to the paddles are plastic at any rate, and that is likely to be the area of the most wear.
