Not bad for the money but....

If you are picky about performance, go with the Fire Box instead, which is a much smoother operator. Despite the similar specs, the box is much much faster to respond to remote clicks, load apps, etc Of course it costs twice as much so if you are on a tight budget and can live with the sludgy performance of the stick, it certainly does the job. I have experienced no buffering issues with the stick. For cord cutters, it has the same superior user interface as the box on Playstation Vue, when compared to the Roku. ie, a live guide to programming and just a more logical layout, both missing on Roku.

Not a great monitor but a great deal for the money
on February 21, 2017

The image quality on this monitor leaves a lot to be desired compared to most good monitors, mainly because it always has a bit of muddy cast to it, no matter how much time you spend calibrating it. I use a multi monitor setup and this one suffers by comparison with the others. Not enough contrast, hard to get good blacks and bright whites. It is more than adequate for most purposes but not great. That said, it is an amazing deal for the price. I bought this on sale for less than $150, less than most 23 or 24 inch monitors go for. If you need a big basic monitor and are not super fussy about color accuracy or image quality, this one is probably good enough. I would not recommend it for critical photo or graphics work. One tip.Use Windows built in color calibration tools to get ride of the red/green cast mine had out of the box. That did wonders for me. Also crank down the brightness and crank up the contrast.

Elegant looks, long wi-fi reach in big homes
on January 10, 2017
Posted by: daytonadan
If you live in a big home and have never been able to get a decent wi-fi signal upstairs -- or in rooms on the other side of the house from your wireless router -- , the oddly named Linksys Velop whole home wi-fi system may provide a solution.
Technically, a mesh system ( but never described that way by Linksys), this package consists of three rectangular boxes. Each one acts as an independent wi-fi router You place them throughout the home to provide an optimum signal everywhere you need it. The nodes, as they are called, all talk to each and adjust and hand off signals to devices that need them as they move through the house.
Forget the ugly antenna laden wi-fi routers of the past, with all those blinking lights. Each Velop node is simply a white rectangular box about eight inches tall and 3 inches square. No antennas. No blinking lights (but there is one small power light on top). Much more elegant.
Setup is super simple and super easy and probably unlike any other wi-fi setup you have ever done. Simply download the Linksys app (Apple and Android, the only way to set up the system) power up the first box and plug it into your cable modem. The app steps you through the setup process, which after selecting a name and password, mainly involves lots of waiting for the app to complete its various steps. It takes about five minutes to setup the first box. Then repeat the same process for the other boxes.
Be aware each node is powered by a rather large power brick so make sure you have a free outlet or power strip the location where you intend to place the box.
Technophobes will love Velop since it hides all the arcane network setup stuff from the user. Everything from choosing the proper wireless security protocol to the best wi-fi channels is entirely automatic and invisible.
But does it work as advertised? Mostly yes, although I found the stability and raw throughput were a bit lacking compared the somewhat high end Linksys wireless router I was using before. On n-only Moto G smartphone, for example, connection speeds dropped from 45 mbs to 25 mbs with Velop. Fast enough for most things but still disappointing.
Still, the overall reach with Velop was excellent. In fact I got better connection speeds (up to 433mbs on an AC laptop) in most distant room of the house, than in the room where with node attached to the cable modem. Presumably because of interference from a neighboring wi-fi system.
In actual usage, as opposed to simply looking at connection speeds, Velop provided fast connections and smooth HD video streaming on Xbox and Roku, It promises equally smooth 4K streaming but I dont have any 4K devices to test.
One other big plus is each box has two ethernet ports hidden in the base. This allows you make direct wired connections to devices that lack wi-fi capabilities.
One thing I did not like is the inability to access the system via PC. Other Linksys wi-fi routers that use the app also allow PC access. Velop does not for some strange reason.
Still this is a new product. Updates are automatic and invisible. I expect it will get better with each new update.
The bottom line here is this is probably a much better solution in big homes than wi-fi extenders since you don't have to worry about multiple networks and names. Performance is probably a lot better too. But if you have a smaller home, a regular old wi-fi router will do just fine and is probably a lot cheaper.

Easy to install and use but pricey
on December 16, 2016
Posted by: daytonadan
If you can handle the hefty price tag, you will be hard pressed to find an easier, more powerful security camera system than the Arlo Pro.
Basic installation and setup is a snap and thanks to the completely wireless and weatherproof HD cameras, you can easily place them almost anywhere with little fuss. They will sit on any flat service or attach to magnetic mounts (included). The hardest part is getting all the pieces and parts out of the almost impregnable retail packaging.
Once you do, you will find you have everything you need to get going, including rechargeable batteries for each of the included cameras, a USB charger and cord and and all the necessary ethernet and power cables needed for the base station.
Setup is as simple as plugging in the base station, attaching it to your router and individually syncing the cameras via a big button on the top of the base station and a little button on the top of each camera. Lights on the base station and cameras tell you how its going and when you are done. This package comes with two cameras but the system can handle as many as five.
A smartphone based app (Apple and Android), which you download and launch before you begin, steps you through the process so it's hard to screw up. Once you are done, you can launch live feeds from each camera whenever you want, via the app, and set them up to trigger with the built in motion sensors, audio sensors (not preset but can be set up within the app). You can also set the cameras to only trigger during certain hours or even only if you are away from the house via the beta geofencing mode. Be aware the cameras work fine at night in night vision mode, but can be blinded by distant bright lights.
The large square batteries that power the cameras are supposed to last up to 6 month but that will vary depending on how much you use them. (They arrive fully charged) The cameras don't come on unless triggered (or you ask for a live feed via the app) and only run for about 30 seconds. This is NOT a surveillance camera so there is no continuous feed. When cameras are triggered, the video is stored in the cloud (free seven day day storage from Netgear) or locally on USB flash drive or hard drive.
Oh, I forgot to ,mention the base station has a built in siren, which can be set to go off when the cameras trip. The sensitivity for movement and the audio is adjustable via the app.
As for aesthetics, they should especially please the Apple crowd. Everything is white and rounded. The base station sits on its edge and is about the size of a large paperback book.
As for downside: Well some might find the batteries an issue but since they are rechargeable it's not a big problem. The only real issue I encountered was after setup, when the app said I needed to download new firmware. That was necessary for each camera and the base station and when the system came back up, one camera was offline and had to be resynced. The app also can be a bit glitchy sometimes and locks up or fails to respond properly. When that happens, just kill the app and relaunch it.
But overall, it is very good, well thought out system that should serve the needs of most people.

Fast and furious pace, muddy script

This is the first truly original story with this cast and its a bit of a disappointment. There was much about the story that didn't make much sense, especially the motivations of the villain. The cast was fine and the new white faced female character, who seems to be destined to return (if there is another Star Trek movie), did a good job. But left me cold in the end,. There's plenty of action, thanks to the fast and furious director and the special effects are good as always. But just did not care for the story.

Best smartwatch for the money

I have had this watch for over a year and while I was disappointed initially, I have come appreciate all the features over time. You can answer phone calls from the watch (if your hearing is good, speaker is tiny) and even respond to texts, plus get all the alerts that go to your phone without pulling out your phone. Lots of watch faces (comes with 60). Decent battery life if you don't crank up the brightness too high. Built in Asus fitness app tracks exercise, steps, calories, distance, sleep (you have to enable that every night to track it). Lacks a heart monitor but that's not a deal breaker for most people. Biggest downside is it is pretty much impossible to see in bright sun and you do have to recharge it every couple of days. But those problems are common to other smart watches that in some cases will not even do what this watch does, for two or three times the price. I like the thin, rectangle format, which has been replaced by thick round format in ZenWatch 3. Can't beat it for the price, especially now with closeout prices.

Swiss Army knife of manscaping
on November 18, 2016
Posted by: daytonadan
If you are one of those people who is into major manscaping, it's hard to go wrong with this package.. It comes with lots of different attachments to deal with all kinds of body hair. Well, unless you simply want to just shave. That is not in its formal resume (shaving the face is NOT recommended, according to the instructions) I threw caution to wind and did it anyway with the foil attachment. It sorta kinda works. Not very close and a bit hard on the skin. But it would be OK in a pinch. Overall a powerful cordless motor that is just fine for bearded types who like what I call the hobo look ( a two or three day growth). You can even simply use it cut the hair on your head (but not shave it bald, also not recommend) if your are brave enough., I wasn't but did use it to trim some ragged edges and it worked fine. The plastic comb slides back and forth to allow for various lengths. You need super eyesight though to see the tiny numbers you use to set the length. Works wet or dry. Comes with a case, which you need for the charger (charges qucikly, in about an hour) and all the attachments. A good value if you can find it on sale.

Has some design issues
on November 8, 2016
Posted by: daytonadan

This is a nice roomy fridge and the top french doors are great. But there is a design issue that can cause serious headaches. You have to be VERY careful to always make sure the doors are FULLY closed. If you don't the entire fridge will freeze up and stop working, ruining everything inside. This is because ice forms around the internal fans that blow the cold air. And they freeze in place. No fan, No cold air. Melt melt melt. Worse yet, there is no positive closing mechanism on the freezer. It is very easy to leave the door ajar a small amount, fractions of an inch. And thats all it takes. An ice storm ensues inside from humidity in the air and thats all she wrote. Same thing happens if fridge door left ajar. Also easy to do. Too bad because its a good fridge otherwise.

Great for multi-user households
on October 23, 2016
Posted by: daytonadan
If you haven't bought a new router in a while and you have plenty of money to spend, this is a very good option for an upgrade. This thing is super fast thanks to its cutting edge technology and onboard dual core processor and is designed to provide full bandwidth to multiple users at the same time. I found almost all of my many devices got better connection speeds with this router, compared any older dual band N router. And best of all, lag time was greatly reduced when surfing the web.
This thing has some interesting advanced admin features, like the ability to prioritize certain devices, like Xbox or Roku, for streaming content. There's also a map in the admin showing all the connected devices (you will have to decrypt those that just provide a long number instead of a mane) and at which speed they are connecting (2.4 or 5).
Install was easy for the most part. It launches its own setup program when you boot up with it for the first time. I had no issues, except with Roku, which insists on you deleting and re-inputting name and password of the network, even it was the same as with the old router.
Streaming buffering issues have disappeared with this router. Very strong consistent signal and better range than my old router had.
If there is any downside, this thing is pretty big, more than twice the size of my old router, with four large antenna. And bright blue. Not exactly unobtrusive.

Fast, capable 2 in 1 laptop
on July 25, 2016
Posted by: daytonadan

Thanks to the 128 SSD, 8G of RAM and i5 chip, this is a super fast little laptop. Boots in a few seconds and handles all tasks in a speedy manner. Nice sharp touchscreen is bigger than most ultrabooks in this class but a little smaller than standard laptop. Has lots of extras like backlit keyboard, bluetooth, USB 3 ports, HDMI out. Charges via USB with included charger. It's light for laptop but heavier than you might expect if you flip the keyboard back and use it as a tablet. ONly real downside is the keyboard, which is very tight and has keys in odd areas and oddly shaped. A challenge for touch typists. But a good deal for the money, especially if you get it on sale. Half the price of similar two in ones. Versatile design means it can double as laptop and tablet.

I hate I bought this
By TechLover12
Do NOT buy, this item worked great for the first 5 to 6 months then the main adapter stopped working and would not power on. I called customer service who advised me that I would have to pay to ship it back to get a repacement. I thought it was stupid but I did it anyway. It took almost a month to get the replacement and now the replacement has gone out within less than 4 months. I hate that I bought this thing. If I could give this thing 0 stars, I would.

I agree there is an issue of reliability to be considered here. The first set of these I bought lasted four or five years before they suddenly died, a few months apart, as yours did. They worked great until they quit for no apparent reason. I bought a replacement set. One of them died in a few weeks. You might get lucky. You might not. Quality control seems a to be a problem with this company.

Problems updating the map
By Kenny
We have had Garmin Nuvi's before, and love them. I bought this one today (June 26), and it worked right out of the box. But then I went through the online download process through Garmin Express to get the latest map, it appeared to successfully download, but got the message "There was an error installing the update." And now the Nuvi says the map is locked! I tried several more downloads, and kept getting the same error. I will try to contact Garmin tech support, and if they can't help me I will have to return it.

Problem may be Garmin USB cable
December 8, 2016
I had a raft of problems updating maps for many years. It would stop mid update. Lose connection between computer and the GPS. On offf on off. For no apparent reason. Then the map would be corrupt. After many years, I finally discovered the problem was a defective USB cable, the one that came with the Garmin! Hard to imagine how one of these could go bad but obviously a broken or lose connection somewhere inside the cable (defect in manufacturing) , where it is invisible. When I switched to another USB cable, I never had another problem. If you have this issue, throw away the Garmin cable and your problem will be solved.

My 6 year old nuvi is better than this.
By zhadum
I decided to get a new Garmin because my old model didn't have life- time maps. The avoidances on this model don't work well. I had selected to avoid unpaved roads. Not only did this Garmin try to get me to turn on to every unpaved road from my home to my destination. It also wanted me to make a U turn to take a unpaved road. Also it's guidance isn't very good, it had me take a off ramp only to have me immediately get right back on the same highway that I just got off. Also it tried to get me to cross several bridges that haven't been there in years. I contacted technical support and was told that a new map update was released and that would help with the problems so I downloaded the update which said that it would take 3 hours to update but instead it ended up taking 48 straight hours to download the update.

Fast internet essential for map updates
December 18, 2016
If it took that long for you to update maps, you must have dial-up speed internet, ie, less than 1MB per second. That's just not usable in my view but some people limp along on it. But since these mapset updates on the order of about 3 gigabytes in size, it will take forever to download them at that speed. Buyers should be aware that doing map updates is not very practical if you have low speed internet at home.

Great Laptop for beginner
By MikeV
This laptop is very good design and light weight. Internal battery last for a period of time if full charge. Doesn't produce a lot of heat, you barely feel it. Very quite laptop. I gave it 3 stars due to lack of 5Ghz wifi. My 6 yrs old sony vaio even have 5Ghz and this 2016 Lenovo doesn't ?. I just don't understand why this IBM company is doing this. I did a lot of research and found out that IBM puts only 2.4 Ghz card to the laptop. I ended up buying an external wireless adapter to get 5Ghz. Hope this help...Good luck.

Does support 5ghz
January 4, 2017
.....but only if you go into the wireless adapter settings and turn it on. I too was puzzled why wireless connection was so slow. I have no idea why the stock configuration is with 5ghz turned off but it was. Once I fixed that, I got a strong 430mbs connections with my AC wireless router. On 2.4mghz, it was 150 max I think. Look for the advanced properties settings on the laptops wireless adapter settings.

Great idea, Not 100% solution for me though
By RobWLINY2
I was really hoping to write a short positive review, but there were some issues which I had to share.
I love that this has taken my 3 separate router/access-points each of which had two network names, and managed to put it all on one network name. Unfortunately, for example, my android-based tablet always seems to connect on the (slower) 2.4GHz network and there is no obvious way to fix this (without perhaps forcing the whole network to use 5GHz, which is not an option).
The signal seemed excellent in some areas that had weak signals before.
A few times while using it, it seemed to disconnect wifi, but after 5-10 seconds it would reconnect. This was in a location with 95-100% wifi signal.
Also, Transfering files on my DELL laptop from network drive -- On Velop i was maxing out around 7MB/sec. Compare that to my previous Linksys Router (wired wireless-access-point) which was getting 27MB/sec peak.
I slightly dislike that i needed to buy network switches because the Velop system only has 2 ethernet ports. On the other hand, now that is done and i don't have to think about the number of available ethernet ports on future devices.
My old access points were "wired" to ethernet, and the secondary nodes here don't seem to work that way (other than as bridges maybe?). This has potential performance implications.
The nodes not being wired i perhaps have more freedom to more optimally place them, so there are potential advantages in using this in areas a wired access point cannot be placed..
As per setup, it was "easy" but twice i had to restart setup on a node after it seemed to hang for more than 5 minutes, and one of those times i needed to factory reset a node..

Same issue. Slow speeds within the network
January 11, 2017
I had the same problem. My old Linksys router was much faster in terms of raw megabits per second speeds (sometimes twice as fast) between devices than the Velop system, which seems tuned mostly for streaming internet. You rarely need speeds much above 50mbs for that and Velop can easily handle that If you are moving big files around within your own network, and have AC devices that are capable of 400mbs or more, Velop is NOT a good option.

Deal if its on sale for $200 or Less, Basic Users!
By ItsAdeal from San Jose, Ca
There are lots of 27" monitors to chose from, I chose to replace 2 older 28" lcd monitors with 2 of these primarily for price and use. At the time of purchase this was the best deal I could find anywhere on the web for a 27" monitor. Acer is a good name, I've been using their products for decades with no problems. always out last the warranty. so far!. there's nothing special about these other than the 3 most common inputs included. its few that support DVI, VGA & HDMI in one monitor these days. Mac users can use a Mini display Port adapter to connect. I tested all three inputs with the same source and found both the DVI and VGA performed well and identical in appearance. The HDMI input did not, the image was washed out compared to the other DVI and VGA inputs. Even though I could have tried to adjust the hdmi to match it did not make sense to do so since it performed well with no adjustment on the other 2 inputs.Since I'm using this in a 2 monitor W7setting I chose the DVI and VGA inputs since my graphics card supports all three. So far all is nominal, steam games look fine, basic use is fine too. The one disappointment for Me was when I opened the box and found the external power supply. Its a personal choice but I prefer internal power supplies on monitors (No power brick, Direct from the wall AC plug to the monitor).
I almost returned these due to this, but after looking at the market again I found it would have cost $100 more each to get that feature. I decided to install and test them. I wall mounted these on 2 vesa 100x100 arms with ease. They phyically lok great, thin bezel, thin depth, non glare. I'm Happy! My advice is if You are looking for a 27" and need multiple inputs and can find this for $200 or less its a good deal at this time. Things change so fast however, so look around at the entire market before chosing this monitor, there may be a better deal out there. The next monitors I buy will be 4K once the price comes down. For Now, these will do.

Thanks for the tip on HDMI
February 27, 2017
I was running my monitor on HDMI and worked for days to get the muddy washed out cast off the screen. Impossible. Then I saw your review, switched to DVI and -- instant improvement!. This is how a monitor should look! Muddy cast gone. Black blacks, white whites. good contrast. No reason this should be but there is no question HDMI connection is the pits. Avoid at all costs. Otherwise, a spectacular monitor for the money, assuming you get in on sale as I did.

Acer 27" S271HL DBID LED HD Monitor: The thin design lets you place this large monitor almost anywhere — even hang it on the wall (wall mount sold separately). Great for playing video games, showing movies, viewing documents side by side, and enlarging photos during the editing process.

Decent, for the price.

Calibrating to achieve reasonably accurate color has proven difficult. "Black" is apparently not achievable.
Overall the image feels washed out. For the price, It's easy to get used to. However, I would not recommend this for any kind of graphic work.

I though so too...

I had this same problem. Maddening. Muddy picture. Milky blacks. No contrast. I spent weeks trying to adjust it with only slight improvement. And then I read another reviewer say, "Don't use HDMI." I though he was nuts. Digital is digital right? Apparently not. I switched to a DVI connection and image quality improved 100 percent. Muddy cast disappeared. Black blacks. Decent color saturation. It's not top of the line....still lacking compared to the best monitors. But pretty good. Great for the money if you get it on sale.

Not good for PS VUE
By ates
For most apps and the Amazon prime tv service it works fine. But if you want this strictly for PS VUE then look else where. There is simply too much lag in navigation and using the guide for the true PS VUE experience. It still works but is very slow in operating and navigating. PS VUE is also capped at 30FPS which is noticeable if you watch sports as the video quality is not as smooth compared to the PS4. I would suggest the newest FIRE TV, or NVIDIA SHIELD but that cost $90 and $200, respectively. I would only recommend this if you're not using it for PS VUE.

YOU are right about PS Vue
March 25, 2017
I have the stick on one set and the regular Fire TV on the other, which is much much faster. The lag times following commands on the stick are just unbelievable, five or ten seconds sometimes. Unacceptable. If you use PS Vue, pay the extra bucks for the box. A much better option.

how to fix that washed out look
March 26, 2017
Make sure you don't use the HDMI connection. Use DVI and it will look just fine. True blacks return. Decent contrast, color. HDMI just looks awful for some reason and cannot be fixed no matter how hard you try. Several reviewers have reported this problem,

Would this work with a 1200w window AC? The only other thing that would be potentially plugged into it would be a floor lamp? Thank you!

No. Not ever close. Much more owoer needed for AC units.

Hi. Since this is sold in America that would imply it is to be used in America. So I was wondering why the specifications here list the voltage requirement as 220v? While I do agree that 220v grid is indeed a better design, I live under tyranny of 120v...

This is a 120 volt design. No 220 needed.

The New Definition of High Definition: This FHD monitor feels as good as it looks, packing IPS technology for 178 degrees ultra-wide viewing angles, 99% sRGB color gamut for color accuracy, and AMD FreeSync to keep your eyes up to speed with your imagination.

how do you connect the monitor to the laptop

If your laptop has an HDMI OUT port, that would work. Many laptops have this. A VGA output would work too but that is less likely to be found on most modern laptops.

Safe and convenient fast wireless charging up to 15W.* Our fastest wireless charging pad unclutters your bedroom, office, or living room while simplifying charging—just lay your phone onto the pad and go. Qi certification ensures standard compatibility and provides peace of mind.

I just bought I phone 12 and your 15 watt pad wiaoo2. Your instructions are so small I can’t read. I googled and can’t find answer to What color light should be when I put my phone on top of pad. Right now phone is on pad, no light.

Yeah, amazing they provide no info on this. And the info on the web site is wrong. Light is white when charging and does not change color when charging is complete. .... I think it will turn a different color if something is wrong. It should not be off, unless you have the stand upside down. Make the the wider featureless side is up. The turbine design side is down.

Will this charge if the phone is in its protective case?

Yes, as long as it is not too bulky. My phone has a thin case and it charges fine.
