Lots of power and potential!

First off, I’d like to share my background. I’ve worked in IT for years, preparing PC’s for employees, testing, and choosing ones I think are efficient enough for the productivity required. I am also a speed enthusiast and love building my own PC’s, however this one seemed to be a good fit for a shared family PC with different needs.
The Dell Inspiron Desktop (i7 model) came packed with power, more than most standard users will need, but I like that. 6 Core processor with 12 cores hyper-threaded and 12 GB of RAM. This was surprising to find to say the least as in my previous experience finding a PC with a punch like this at a retail store can be slim, props to Best Buy for stocking a PC of this caliber. The PC is very lightweight, especially for such powerful components, this was nice moving around. Mouse and keyboard were standard, was impressed the mouse was able to work on glass as many optical mouses (or is it mice?) have trouble.
Well aside from looking good on paper, how does it actually perform? The initial load up seemed good and going through the Windows Setup was standard. Was able to connect to wifi (AC Band) network to quickly stream downloads and updates right. I’m very particular about lag when it comes to my PCs, so my goal was to push this PC with some multi-tasking to see how it could handle it. First I updated Windows. The computer crashed during the initial update process. I didn’t see the need to blame the PC for this as Windows can be a culprit most of the time. I also noticed a very clean desktop, only the Recycling Bin on was on there. That is nice not to have my new PC crowded with a bunch of software I won’t use, however I did uninstall McAfee and Dropbox seemed to pop-up trying to get me to sign up.

My first 2 installs were Microsoft Office and Steam/Counter Strike (Video Game) to see how the PC could handle it. I ran both installs simultaneously and it seemed slightly sluggish while downloading and trying to move around. Counter Strike is not a graphic intense game by default, so I wanted to see how the GT 1030 video card could handle it. After having to reboot the computer due to stalled installs, they both installed smoothly. Took a little longer than I expected, along with some other multitasking I was performing, but this could be a bottleneck by the Hard Drive. I’m accustomed to SSD (Sold State Drives) and every PC or laptop I use, I install them for the performance increase. I’m going to assume this is the reason for the lag I’ve experienced.
The game ran fine with default graphics, so thats impressive. Microsoft Office ran fairly smooth through opening several programs from the suite. The video card has two ports, HDMI and DVI. The downside to this is that the two monitors I hooked up both support 2560x1440, but DVI only supports up to 1920x1080, so my second monitor was shorted on the resolution. Dell includes a Support Assist Software, as they do with most of their PC’s. This is very convenient especially for someone who isn’t tech savvy. It’s a one-stop shop for driver updates, hardware scanning, file clean-up, tuning, and optimization. It also has a section for troubleshooting and support and lists the warranty end date.
Conclusion: Overall this PC is impressive with its specs and size, but does seem a little slower than I’d expect for the hardware. Again, I’d initially look at the hard drive as the culprit and would definitely recommend installing an SSD drive as a replacement as they are much faster and pretty cheap these days to really maximize the power of this PC. You get a decent video card which is big for teens wanting to play games like Fortnite without having to spend the extra bucks on an expensive video card. There are 2 convenient USB 3.0 ports, Card Reader, and Headphone Jack located in the front of the PC for ease of access.
Recommendations: Upgrade to SSD to get the most out of it, you can use the 1tb included drive as a second hard drive for additional storage. If used for gaming, get new mouse and keyboard. The mouse and keyboard that come with it are decent and have a good feel, but not ideal as some of the responsiveness didn’t seem fast enough for gaming needs.

Excellent Sound!

The Sonos Beam Soundbar really has exceeded my expectations. First off, the packaging was easy and clean looking. The setup requires you install on an app on your phone and walks you through the process of installing and measuring the room it is in by using your phone to hear the dimensions. I placed it in my bedroom as I already have a sound system setup in my living room. Initially, playing music sounded good. Real good, nice and clean. I've heard a lot of about Sonos and they seem to have a good reputation and they didn't disappoint this time, but wasn't sure if it was worth the price tag.
Well what really impressed me is multi speaker design and how it take advantage of the space of the room. I felt goofy moving my phone around the bedroom in front of my girlfriend, but its completely worth it. I listen to music or rain sounds when I sleep. Well come the morning time I was listening to rain sounds and it sounded incredible in my bedroom. Rain sounded to come from one angle, thunder came from the sides. It was a like a genuine surround sound in my bedroom. I always used my Amazon Echo Dot to listen to this, but this was a huge upgrade! Having Alex built into the soundbar is a nice bonus. You can also add other services such as Audible and Google music along with Pandora or Spotify, but only Alexa works natively from your voice that I am aware of.
The sound bar is so nice I'm planning to upgrade my bedroom tv now just to match the great sound coming from it, something I had zero intention on doing before I got the sound bar.

Good sound but doesn't last long enough

To begin, I have to say I’m pretty disappointed with the speaker. The sound seems good and has nice bass. The JBL connect feature where you connect other jbl speakers is also very smooth and easy to use. My complaint is with the battery life. There are two things I want from a portable speaker. Power and long-lasting battery life. I’ve owned the Boom, MegaBoom, the Marhsall Kilburn, the JBL Xtreme, and the JBL Flip 3. The suggested battery life of the Xtreme is 15 hours, of course that is only at 50% of volume and probably only playing music from the 60’s (no bass). The power seems reasonable behind the sound but I think its more focused on the bass, the catch 22 is that the bass is probably what drains the battery the most. I got about 4-5 hours battery life out it. I couldn’t believe the first time I brought it out on the boat it was already dead. My expectations for playing it at its loudest (so everyone on the boat can hear it) was at least 7-8 hours. I returned my Marshall Kilburn which was a great speaker because I read a review that the JBL was louder, and the water resistance was important for me as I bring it around water 70% of the time. However, the battery life of the Kilburn was great. I never once was able to drain the battery to where it shut off.
What really surprises me is that the Flip 3 is nearly just as loud (minus the bass) as the Xtreme. My buddy who was with us on the boat hooked up his Flip 3 when my Xtreme died and I couldn’t believe it sounded just as loud. I immediately bought one to test out against the Xtreme on my beach trip this weekend. The beauty of the Flip 3 aside from its size and great volume it puts out is that it charges with Micro-USB. This means I can hook it up to my battery pack and give it 4x the battery life. Being that the flip was 1/3 the price of the Xtreme I returned the it and am keeping the Flip.
In conclusion I’m keeping the Flip 3 for portable benefits and I purchased the Ion Job Rocker for power and long-lasting battery (50 hours!). I just think the Xtreme is over-priced compared to the Flip 3, but if battery life is not an issue for you then it may be exactly what you want. Maybe I got a lemon, but even then I’d rather spend 1/3 less for the Flip. The size of the Xtreme makes it less portable too, one factor I was willing to accept if the battery lasted longer.

Great Headphones!
on March 18, 2015
Posted by: Jp223
from Houston, Tx
I've had these headphones for a week now. I was always more of a earbud type guy. Never liked the idea of bulky headphones because they look like they get sweaty and they look funny IMO. After considering some nice wireless headphones I looked into these. The reviews were great and I wound up returning headphones that were in the mail en route to my house based on reviews alone to buy these.
My story: I drove to BB after work, then straight to the gym, synced it with my phone in my car and started using them immediately hoping there was enough residual charge left. There was.
The main purpose of these is for the gym. Here are my Pro's/Con's:
Pros:
- Long battery life
- Good sound quality; I'm no audiophile by any means but I think they sound pretty decent
- Good quality material; I hate cheap stuff. I put these in my gym bag and things get smushed and knocked around in there. These look like they can handle it.
- Good range. Haven't lost a signal yet from walking away from my phone to get weights
Cons (not really cons because I expected these from a product like this but...):
- Sweaty ears as I knew would happen. I'm not a big sweater but I have to wipe my ears off every 5-10 min while working out
- Large size. Since these are wireless the batteries need to be stored in them making them bigger. I feel like I have the biggest headphones in the gym compared to the corded "lifters"...also expected.
- I wish there was a track changer on these and maybe use the power button as a quick mute. I honestly haven't read the directions so if there is an option for it, then I'll stand corrected. Not really a con, just wishing for added convenience.
Other thoughts:
I came off a pair of inexpensive bluetooth ear buds. Great value, but they always fall out and were very flimsy. They couldn't handle my gym bag, not to mention the cable connecting the 2 buds would get tangled.
These Skull Candy headphones are great and I would definitely buy again. 5 Stars

Fitbit HR vs Jawbone UP Original
on March 9, 2015
Posted by: Jp223
from Houston, Tx
Like many of you, I went through tons of reviews to compare the best products. So I decided to make a review of my own (posted under both products). The products I am comparing are the Fitbit Charge HR and the Jawbone UP (Original), so my review will be for both. I wanted something affordable or extra functional if I was going to pay more. I got the Jawbone UP for cheap, as it seems Bestbuy was getting rid of them during a fire sale. I ordered the Jawbone first, received it and it worked well for a week then it decided to stop working. After trying soft and hard resets I end up returning it. Of course I was hooked now to know what my activity levels were so I was on the lookout for something. About 2 weeks later I noticed Bestbuy was selling the Jawbone again on their website (limited quantities) so I ordered it and paid the extra $8 for a 2 year warranty. I had my eyes set on something bigger but for the $30 price tag it was hard to beat. This one worked much better, I’ve had it for 3 weeks and not a glitch yet, unlike the other one which needed a soft reset every couple of days.
So after doing research there were really 3 devices I was looking at. Jawbone UP, Charge HR, and Pebble. I went ahead and bought the HR to test out and compare with the Jawbone. I wear them both on the same wrist (left-nondominant) during this trial period. Here are my last 3 days of stats to compare; jawbone sleep will be most accurate as that is manually set while Fitbit is automatic:
Yesterday:
Jawbone Steps: 3011 Steps
Jawbone Sleep time: 8 hours 26 min
Fitbit Steps: 4635
Fitbit Sleep: 7 hours 58 min
Day Before that:
Jawbone Steps: 6314
Jawbone Sleep: 9 hours 3 min
Fitbit Steps: 9092
Fitbit Sleep: 8 hours 52 min
Day Before that:
Jawbone Steps: 4981
Jawbone Sleep: 7 hours 17 min
Fitbit Steps: 6509
Fitbit Sleep: 7 hours 1 min
I did a short walking test to measure the calibration. I walked 100 steps and started it as an activity on both. The results are:
Jawbone: 102 steps
Fitbit: 93 steps
Seems to contradict the full day results. Sensitivity can vary from non-arm moving exercises like shopping cart movements or carrying weights at the gym.
So it appears that Fitbit credits me 40-50% more steps for the full day but has an impressive sleep tracker to it considering it’s all automatic. Now let me go over the Pro’s/ Con’s:
Jawbone UP
Pros:
- Non-watch like. I’m big into real watches and this is more of an accessory than a watch that I can wear on either arm. Its not flashy, not bulky like some people are saying.
- Easy to remove. Just twist it and it goes on or right off. Real quick and convenient
- Battery life. I get about the full 9 – 10 battery life and that’s using the silent alarm throughout the week.
- Jawbone App is easy to use and has a great graphic interface. Really enjoy the detailed sleeping graph.
- Silent Alarm works great
Cons:
- Manual Sync. I really can’t count too much against this. I knew this was the feature when I bought it and obviously the newer ones (UP 24 and UP 3) aren’t manual but thought I would just share it.
- Limited functionality. I mostly track steps/sleep, but comparing it to the Fitbit I feel like I’m low on the options list. Keep in mind I’m speaking for the Original not the 24 which I have no experience with. Its basic, but gets the job done. So no stars against.
- Website. I haven’t seemed to easily find the website to login into, I don’t think it should be complicated. I google jawbone up, login, and does not provide any personal information. Where are my stats getting uploaded to? They should make this much more convenient to access from any PC. So I’ve never seen the Jawbone page for personal stats but I also haven’t extensively searched for it.
Fitbit Charge HR
Pros:
- LCD screen. Really nice to not pull out my phone to see where I’m at
- Auto sync. This is amazing! They provide a usb adapter to plug into your PC to wireless sync to your band when its nearby. This is perfect. The band is always syncing with my phone and then when I go home to my pc, I just load the webpage (very easy to find) and there are all my stats!
- Email notifications. Fitbit will send emails to notify you when your battery is low and motivate you to reach your goals or even congratulate you for reaching them. Pretty nice especially when it’s a busy day and I lose track.
- Tons of functionality. Steps, sleep, calories burned, # of flights of stairs, Heart Rate, Distance walked, clock, and even a semi-customizable time setup.
- Battery life. While the battery life is half that of the Jawbone, I’m still very impressed with it. I get about a full 5 days and with a constant lights flashing for your HR at the bottom of it 24hours/day I think that’s pretty good.
- Automatic sleep detection. This has been very impressive. I forget to set my Jawbone sometimes but as you can see its quite accurate.
- Customization. Fitbit website gives you lots of options to customize and tweak your band
Cons:
- While LCD is a pro, I also think it’s a con. Its too much of a half-watch. I love wearing real watches, but its almost a choice of wearing a watch or this band…I mean wearing both just seems like a little much. For those not big into watches then this is not an issue
- Band Clasp. It’s a little more hassle then I like to take the band off and on. Nothing that bad, but not that quick. Side note: I think I have small wrists for a guy, got the Large, and its probably a perfect fit if not a bit small so if you have average to above average wrists for a guy, go for the extra large.
- Double Tap. You are supposed to double tap the screen to turn it on. I find that I have to multi tap or tap extra hard to just get it on. Pretty much not worth it, I’ll just hit the side button once.
- Could not find a way on phone or website to pull up my individual activity stats. During the activity you can see stats on the band itself but when you complete the activity I haven’t found a way. Maybe someone can share some advice on this if there is a way.
Other Thoughts
- Heart Rate. The reviews here are pretty spot on about it. Seems like activity levels aren’t as accurate while resting HR is more on par. As I write this, my real HR is about 60 BPM. My fitbit says I am at 59. My intense activities show me at a rate of around 120, but its usually not consistent. Of course sweat and placement of the band make a difference.
- This (and the Jawbone) activity tracker should be water proof. Can’t be that difficult to make but its supposed to track all levels of activity and if it can’t get a little more than splashed on then neither are truly worth the money IMO.
- Phone calls. I don’t get many phone calls but it appears to alert me of a phone call a few seconds after the phone has been ringing. For some reason I was also expecting text alerts but that is not the case. I don’t have much experience with it so I put it here instead of Cons.
Final Thoughts
I’ve had the Charge for just over a week and the Fitbit for close to 3. I will probably be returning the Charge HR. It’s a great device, but neither one is water proof. The HR, while super functional, replaces the “watch” for me, while its not enough of a watch and costs about 5 times what I paid for the Jawbone. I am looking into the Pebble Time as it can use Jawbone UP software, waterproof (for my swimming), and is also a full functional watch. Apple watch is looking like a contender as well. If I wasn’t a big watch person and this was waterproof I would keep it in a heartbeat (pun intended). In the meantime I will stick with the Jawbone UP. I will post my final decision in an edit.

Work, play, video conference, and stream from anywhere in your home. Set up eero in minutes and get automatic updates, a built-in Zigbee smart home hub, and more. Powered by TrueMesh, eero optimizes your wifi to work for your space and supports 75+ devices.

Does the eero 6 do automatic updates?

It checks for updates automatically and it prompted me to install them, it did so during my setup. I don't see an option to install them automatically, more than likely it'll prompt you so it doesn't disrupt your wifi service unexpectantly.
