Easiest option for Antenna viewing & recording

I’ve had another competitors system to view antenna TV across my network for a few years, but the software requires additional subscription fees to access basic features, such as a guide and recording capability. So, when I began reading about Tablo, they appeared to offer a newer generation product (the 4th), with built in DVR, a 14 day program guide, and $0 subscription fee to access the feature set.
In the box you’ll find the Tablo device, a power cable, and an ethernet cable to connect the device to a nearby router or switch. Installation requires the use of an app, which can be downloaded on the appropriate app store for free, set up an account with basic information to identify your location (for the Guide), and scanning for channels. The device also has the capability to connect to your network wirelessly, but if you have the option to go wired, I’d highly recommend it to avoid buffering or delays in crowded networks.
It’s important to point out that Tablo did offer a previous generation service, which did require a subscription, and is now labeled their legacy product. The reason I want to point this out, is because my Sony TV with Android built in, only allowed me to find the “legacy” app. When installed it detects the hardware, but then failed to play. After using the Tablo website, it directed me to the appropriate Play Store app, allowed me to push the install to my TV, and was up and running in just a few minutes.
Once installed, the scan process only took a few minutes, finding more channels than my previous device, and immediately began playback when selected on my Android based smart TV. It was quick to download the newest guide for the channels, and since it offers 2 tuners, allows for watching and recording simultaneously for 2 programs. The iOS app also allows you to download and install updates while you’re on the same network, prompting you when launching the app if there is a new one. I found the install process only taking a couple of minutes at most, with the tuners stopping playback while installing.
The only con is those that don’t have a Google or Amazon streaming option at the time of release. While it does state that it’s compatible with Apple TV, you can only AirPlay currently, which I found often lost connection or failed to display a picture in the correct orientation making it difficult to view on my TV without using the Android TV functionality built in to the TV. Being a household with all Apple TV’s, I was excepting the Apple TV app to be released alongside the product, and appears to be the only major streaming device currently unreleased as of the writing of this review.
However, it works great on iOS, offering near real-time video on all network devices viewing the stream. It will help having a great WiFi or wired network to offer the best picture quality, and you may notice some degradation of the picture while your network catches up. However, I rarely found the need to restart the feed or the app to view, and even left a channel up for several hours on my TV as background noise without ANY issues. The app itself has 3 basic tabs; your library where you can find your scheduled recordings and monitor your storage space, a Home (default view) where you can view current viewing recommendations and upcoming events (like Sports or Premieres), and you’ll also get access to a few digital streaming channels. In the Live tab, you’ll see your guide, along with some of those digital channels that stream instead of using the antenna. So, don’t be surprised when you know you only have 10 antenna stations, but continue to see some mainstream networks show up without a channel number.
Overall, this is a great product for those cutting the cable or satellite bill with a decent amount of antenna TV and streaming channels available. You’ll see channels at the broadcasted resolution up to 1080, and even those running at the lowest digital resolution of 480. Browsing the apps on Android TV and on iOS was a great experience, and I only ever had the mobile app crash once. It loads quickly, and provides an option to rewind, pause, and fast forward while viewing. Given the easy setup, broad device support, DVR capability and the features offered without additional subscription fee this is an easy buy recommendation!

Simple DIY setup with excellent monitoring!

I’ve had a previous generation of SimpliSafe at my previous home. It offered reliability, easy to DIY install of sensors, and had the ability to “self-monitor” in the event I didn’t want to pay for the monitoring service anymore. Currently, my partner and I are living out of a camper, which we purchased while building a new home on our property. Having a new system allowed us to start fresh, with new sensors, and take advantage of the newer line of cameras for both indoor and outdoor monitoring.
In the box you’ll find four entry sensors for use with Windows and Doors, an indoor camera, an outdoor wireless camera with battery & charging cable, a motion sensor, a base station, some security labels identifying the security system, an outdoor sign with stake to assemble, and a keypad for enabling/disabling the alarm on-site. The SimpliSafe app offers an easy to follow installation process, beginning with account set up or login, and set up of the main base station. Once you’ve got you account set-up, you’ll go through the process of adding devices, with a simple interface of their devices to choose from.
Each device had a very straightforward process for install; simply remove the battery tabs, push the “setup” button on the device, name the device, and place it. Overall, setting up the entire system with all the sensors, the keypad, and cameras took about 30 minutes overall. Once you’ve completed installation, you’ll enter your emergency contacts along with phone numbers, and get a basic walk through of using the app to check status or view cameras.
There is a 3 day “practice” window, where your system will not contact emergency services or trigger monitoring, allowing you to experience the siren and arming/disarming. Once your monitoring begins (it comes with a a 30 day trial), you’ll begin receiving calls or notifications of triggered events, at which point the monitoring will either use the camera with 2 way audio to confirm it’s someone authorized to be on the premises, and/or call you directly before dispatching police/emergency services.
In any case, I appreciated the time allowed to play around with the alarm, especially since my partner had never used one before. This allowed her ample time to get an idea of where each sensor was, adjust the volume of the base station siren to accommodate our smaller space, and also familiarize herself with using the keypad. I also want to point out how awesome the pet detection is with the motion señor
Overall, we’ve felt much safer having SimpliSafe to monitoring the property. We’ve only had one false alarm, and was only due to a family member letting our pets out while we were away. However, once we got a call, it was easy to have the monitoring professional disregard the alarm, since we easily identified it was our relative. The 30 day trial also allows you to try both levels of monitoring, one with full monitoring by actively checking your cameras for events, and another that allowed for monitoring when an alarm was triggered. Once the trial ends, you can call and cancel at any time, as there are no contracts. You’re just charged monthly for the service. We opted for the full monitoring option, allowing us to feel more secure in the rural area. You’ll also get motion camera alerts from the outdoor cam, and the indoor camera offers a privacy feature; where it closes a mechanical shutter while you’re home. I highly recommend the system!

A great entry level mouse for Gamers!

The Razer Cobra Gaming Mouse is a great entry-level option for gamers who prioritize comfort, precision, and speed. The lightweight design, responsiveness, and Chroma lighting are all great features found on many higher priced options.
In the box you’ll find the mouse, with attached USB A cable, and some basic documentation for the warranty. I'm was impressed by the flexible cable, which didn’t snag itself or feel like it was in the way, it offered plenty of length to reach my gaming PC on a shelf, and the mouse feet allowed for smooth movement on any surface. It is also plug and play for both MacOS and Windows PC, allowing you to jump right into a game. The Chroma lighting would default cycle colors on both the logo near the palm area, and a nice glow along the lower edge.
Overall, its a solid choice for FPS gamers who want a reliable and comfortable mouse, but aren’t looking to break the bank, or have the need for more buttons for MMORPG’s. The lighting adds a nice touch, living up to the Razer brand, and the performance easily bests any budget gaming mouse you can buy online. If you’re in the market for a new mouse, or looking to gift your gamer kids a solid gaming mouse that can be used for work, school, and gameplay, this is a great choice.

Anova is known for being one of the first major players in bringing Sous Vide Precision cooking to the home, with smart features that were far superior to others. In the box you’ll find the Cooker, and some basic materials. The benefit of the Precision Cooker 3.0 is the WiFi connectivity and smart app, which allow you to start/stop cooking, set temperature, timers, and even monitor the device remotely.
There is a clamp on the device making this far easier to place in various containers for your cooking use. The Anova apps comes fully featured with recipes and even step by step instructions to prep and cook your meal. I was honestly quite blown away by the sheer number of recipes in the app, and just how easy it was to follow along. The result is perfectly cooked meats, with little worry that you’ll overcook anything. I was also impressed with just how quickly it got the water to temp!
Thus far, I’ve made about 10 steaks, burgers, chicken, and even used this to boil some eggs. The device boasts about 1100 watts of cooking power, the touch screen is easy to use and view the temp and cooking timer. Cleaning up is also easy, assuming the bag you used didn’t leak into the water. Compared to the previous generation device, I also found this one stayed connected to WiFi without once dropping off and the temp appeared to be consistent throughout the container I was using.

A powerful speaker for it's size

Bluetooth speakers are plentiful, but it’s tough to find one that offers sound that really makes it enjoyable to use Poolside or on the go. Marshall appears to have solved this with a small form factor speaker, with a speaker capable of up to 20 hours of playback on a full charge. Better yet, it even allows you to charge your phone or USB device while using the speaker for playback.
In the box, you’ll find the Marshall Middleton speaker, a USB C to A charging cable (power adapter isn’t included), and a rubber-like carrying strap. The first thing you’ll likely notice is the weight. It’s a hefty weight for such a small form factor, has a rubber like exterior for a more rugged look & feel, includes a 3.5mm input for external devices that lack bluetooth, a nicely implemented joystick style center button which offers control of power, volume, and for skipping tracks. Powering on the device, and you’re immediately in pairing mode, with the device popping up quickly in the bluetooth settings, identifying as “Middleton.”
The device really jumps right into the Marshall branding, with the packaging, the strap having the established year of 1962, and it mirrors the look of a Guitar amp. There are a few buttons on the top of the device, which are identified by the stamping on the rubber exterior. There is a button to set the Bass & Treble levels, a battery button to check the charge, and a bluetooth button you can hold down to start pairing another device. I should note, this speaker is designed to pair up with another Marshall speaker, in case you purchased two of them. It also plays really neat guitar riffs to confirm pairing and connection to your device.
My speaker arrived with about a 60% battery level, and does allow you to charge at the same time you’re using it. The level indicator will show you the charge level, and will also confirm the volume level. For such a small speaker I was absolutely blown away by the sound. It’s clear, the Bass at mid volume really bumps clearly, and has a 360 degree like speaker array allowing you to hear the sound clearly from just about any angle.
The build quality of the speaker seems solid, and the rubberized exterior does a great job repelling water. The included strap loops into a spot on the top-right side of the speaker and is secured using the included screw. Overall, this speaker has impressed me with the full stereo sound, and having the ability to charge my iPhone using a USB C to Lighting cable worked flawlessly, while only discharging the battery by maybe an hour or so of playback. The ease of setup and sound adjustment from the device directly make this an easy recommendation.

A great entry level gaming monitor!

Samsung makes a variety of monitors to serve most any need. This 27” monitor is versatile enough for use in your home office, or for gaming after knocking out some productivity tasks on your PC. In the box, you’ll find the Monitor, stand, a rear cover, the power cable, and some manuals/warranty information.
The Monitor has 2 HDMI connects, a headphone jack, and a display port for use with most PC’s. There was no driver required for installation, and the monitor was detected with 1080P resolution out of the box. For those looking for a great budget gaming monitor, this does support a 75hz refresh rate, which in can be enabled using the display settings on your Windows PC (defaulted to 60hz). What this monitor does have over others, are speakers. This is great for those looking for a general purpose home office monitor, or those with limited desk space.
The monitor is edge lit, which in darker settings meant some light bleeding from the backlight. While this was visible during darker scenes in games and video playback, it wasn’t too overwhelming. If you’re budget minded, this monitor is a solid choice for those looking to build a great 1080P gaming machine without the need for 144hz+ refresh rates or higher resolutions. The 27” screen does make it easier to view documents and some finer details in games.
I found this monitor to be a great addition to my home office, using this mostly with my PC for productivity tasks, and some light gaming after work. I play a lot of MMOs, with Star Trek online being my favorite. Paired with a bit of a workhorse GPU, I found this to be a bit underwhelming for my gaming rig, but would be great for those looking for an entry level gaming monitor.
Overall, given the built in speakers, 75hz refresh rate, and max 1080P resolution I’d recommend this for those looking for the best value for the money. It’s great for home office use, college students who want a versatile monitor, or those that don’t want to break the bank buying a larger monitor.

Probably the best activity monitor you can buy.

I’ve been using a smart watch and a smart band to monitor my daily activity goals and to track sleep. I’ve often found the simple task of tracking sleep with one of these to be a bit cumbersome, with them often hitting something or coming off while sleeping. The OURA ring is a different kind of device. It’s both stylish; looking like every day jewelry on your hand, while stealthily monitoring your vitals, tracking your activities, and keeping you moving throughout the day. They come in a variety of sizes and does require a smart phone with an app to pair with the ring.
This review is focused on the newer generation ring, which is a round ring. The ring I opted to get, was a silver Gen 3 Horizon ring. When you initially order the ring, you’re sent a ring sizing kit within a day or two. OURA does a great job with providing a video instruction on how to find the best size for your daily use. They recommend using either your index or middle fingers for the best fit and the best chance to monitor you while you’re active. I ended up with a size 12, which I wear on my left hand middle finger.
In the box, you’ll find the ring, a charging base, a USB A to C cable, and owners manual. You’ll need to provide your own charging adapter, like the one you already use for a cell phone or other smart devices. Once you’ve connected the charger and placed the ring on the base, the LED light on the charger will indicate it’s ready for set up. You’ll need to install the OURA app, which is free in both major app stores (iOS and Android). Once you’ve had the chance to sign in and setup the app, adding the ring is straight forward. The app discovers the ring quickly, at which point you follow the prompts to begin. The set up itself will take several minutes, so be sure to keep your phone near the ring while it fully pairs up and you finish any available updates.
The Horizon ring is stylish enough to wear as a compliment to your daily wardrobe. It’s also durable enough to wear all day, without fear of it falling off, washing your hands, going for a quick swim, or wearing overnight while you sleep. The ring has several sensors around the inside, all doing their part to monitor your vitals and report back to the app for you to review. Once you’re in the app, you’re welcomed with readiness, sleep, and activity scores, which provides you with a rating up to 100 for each. Using this score, the app will recommend you slow down and relax to recover from your previous days activities or recommend another workout. You can even drill down from day, week, month, and even year’s worth of data points for each.
I will say, of all the features, I’ve found the sleep score the most impactful to my nightly routine. I tried using smart bands and watches to keep track during previous attempts, but found them to be uncomfortable to sleep with. This often led to misleading or missing data points, keeping those companion apps from tracking my sleep. The Oura ring, one the other hand, has been comfortable to wear all day and throughout the night. The drill down in the sleep tab averages your total sleep time, efficiency, REM sleep, and even the timing of when you go to bed. You’re also presented with notifications throughout the day with reminders to get up and move around.
The long battery life also means I can often go 2 to 4 days, depending on level of activity, without needing to charge. Charging the device can take a 15-20 minutes or a little over an hour if it’s near 0% battery charge. I generally charge mine while I’m in the shower and get ready for my day. Once I get the notification from the Oura App that it’s charged to 100% (assuming you’re near the ring), I put it back on. Overall, I’m really happy with the Oura Ring. I’ve been able to sport this while out at a wedding, getting compliments for the shine, and when I’m going about my day to day activities without worrying about losing it. This has to be the best and easiest health monitor I’ve ever used. No buttons to push, charging is easy, cleaning is simple, and its comfortable to wear all day.

Insignia Patio Heater
It’s been sometime since I’ve owned a Patio Heater, with the last one being about 2 homes ago. However, given the colder winters over the last couple of years, I thought it was time to try out one for our patio at home. In the box, you’ll find the patio heater in several parts, the user manual, the installation hardware, and the warranty info.
I should note, that the hardware included doesn’t include a screwdriver or a second wrench which is recommended for easier assembly. I ended up putting this together on my own, and it took about an hour from start to finish. I’d also recommend removing the blue plastic wrap prior to installation, as this was by far the most frustrating part of the assembly.
The instructions are fairly straightforward, but I will warn you that the bolts included seem poorly made, as some of the heads didn’t fit well with the included wrench. This resulted in my having to pull out my home tool set and using a couple of different sized wrenches to get everything tightened up. I will say, that all the machined spots all matched up well, and didn’t require a lot of work to screw together.
This obviously doesn’t include a propane tank, so prepare to shell out a bit more (in my case around $50) for a new tank. The storage area where the propane tank sits, also includes a small plastic inner container for water or sand to keep the unit from easily tipping over. I opted to use water, as this would make it easier to empty out, should I decide to store this in a storage unit. The patio heater doesn’t include a weather cover, so keep this in mind if it’s exposed to the elements. I found the ignition to work almost immediately during each use, as it includes a small AAA battery for the igniter.
So how much heat does this put out. On the highest setting, I found this to cover the entire patio with heat (about 10x10 area) without any issue. Even when the wind was blowing, the heater never once blew out, which was great for the evening I was able to use it. Again, make sure you remove the blue plastic before putting on the top most housing of the heater. I missed a few plastic slivers, and they started smoking as they melted away during my initial use, but didn’t cause any damage.
Overall, this does exactly as advertised. It did take a little more effort to assemble, but once it was put together it felt solid, and thus far has been used only a handful of times with plenty of heat. So, if you’re in the market for a patio heater, I’d say give this one a shot!

Yes, they support using Siri, and work flawlessly for me on iPhone X.

Can they work independently? Is there a microphone in each piece so you can just switch between the 2 to gain the most amount of battery time?
Yes, they can work independently. However, the battery time was approx 5 to 6 hours with non-stop noise cancelling use before I had to charge them. Even so, about 10 minutes in the case gave me another 1 to 2 hours of use without issue.

How comfortable are they? Do they feel like they're going to fall out with rigorous exercise (running) or do they have a secure fit a majority of the time?
Took these on a run outside, on a treadmill, on a bike ride, lifting at the gym, and never once fell out.

I can’t understand why it can’t be connected to Ps4. Any idea out here?
This is actually a limitation from Sony Computer Entertainment, in regards to the PlayStation 4. They only allow pairing of officially PlayStation licensed headphones designed for use on the console. Even though these were designed by Sony, they weren't designed for use with the console. There are various 3rd party dongles you can purchase to use unsupported bluetooth headphones, if this is what you're trying to do.

You can use either speaker mode, or ear bud mode. There is a toggle button on the device to select either sound option. If you're in ear bud mode, it shuts the speaker off. You just wear it the same way, no need to re-adjust the way it's sitting for speaker mode.

I cannot connect directly to my TV because of location, can I connect this directly to the cable box?
You can, using the included optical cable. It's best to connect it to your TV if you have multiple sources (e.g. gaming consoles, DVD, Bluray players, etc.).
