Another reason why you chose the PS3!

Every once in awhile a game comes out that reminds you why you chose the PS3 over the 360. I believe that Killzone 3 is one of those games.
To get it out of the way right now. This game is probably the best looking game that I have seen. I mean this game looks amazing! You can look at screenshots all day and say it looks good but when you see the game in motion that's when you really realize.
Yeah, the story isn't very good and it's short but, honestly, I didn't really care because I was having too much fun with the very intense campaign. Every action you do in the game has weight behind it. Every bullet causes a realistic reaction within the environment. If it hits an enemy, his body will react in one of the most realistic ways I have seen in a videogame. Im not over exaggerating.
The action is intese. The environments are gorgeous. The effects are amazing. And, to top it all off it has incredibly fun competitive multiplayer and awesome split-screen coop.
Bottom line is if you love and play shooters just to blow stuff up and you own a PS3 then killzone 3 is THE game to get. Stop reading and click on the add to cart button right now. You need to experience this game.
What's great about it: Amazing visuals, intense singleplayer campaign, fantastic multiplayer
What's not so great: campaign is a bit short, no online co op

Not the quality I was expecting from Bioware
on June 17, 2012
Posted by: ClintCommander
from UT
I have always been a huge fan of Bioware. Ever since I played Kotor I was always excited for what bioware was coming out with next.
I was pretty excited to play dragon age because from what I could see the combat looked a lot like the combat in kotor.
As the game started out I was having quite a bit of fun figuring everything out. The combat was a lot like kotor.
As I got deeper and deeper into the game, however, I started finding a lot of things about dragon age that frustrated me. It got to the point where I was getting more frustration than enjoyment out of the game.
I guess what began it all was when the game crashed on me not once but 2 times. Yes, you can save whenever in the game but the game takes so long to load up. A game just shouldn't do that. There are a bunch of bugs and glitches in the game as well that don't break the game but certainly are noticable. The game doesn't run at a steady framerate ever and the load times can get pretty lengthy at times.
I could have forgiven those problems but I got pretty frustrated with some gameplay elements as well. One of the biggest ones for me was the friendly AI. At first its not so bad because the fights are pretty managable but when things get really heavy later on it gets hard and frustrating trying to keep track of what your teamates are doing. I fiddled around with their behavior commands a lot but I found that it didnt help all that much. They continued to keep being overwhelmed and sometimes even ignoring their commands completely. After losing fight after fight after fight I finally gave up.
That kind of ties into the other problem I have with the game. It is one of those games where you kind of have to learn as you go. the learning curve is kind of steep. A lot of details about the game don't get explained so you are just left to figure it out for yourself. I constantly got myself into quests that were out of my league due to my lower level but I wouldn't be aware of that until I got into the middle of it. In those cases I had to load my game or backtrack to the beginning. I also felt like my equipment was always inferior to what I should have had. I kept the same dang sword for my whole playtime because none other sword i found was an improvement but my sword hardly did any damage to the enemies.
Im not saying that this game is terrible but it just wasn't what I was expecting from bioware. I think i got frustrated because I saw a lot of potential that wasnt tapped into. I can definitely see how others can end up loving this game and having a lot of fun with it.
In my case, however, I didn't have the patience required to micromanage everything and constantly be preparing for the next game crash.
What's great about it: an interesting story, interactions with party members, voice acting
What's not so great: mediocre visuals, unsteady framerate, AI is lacking

A good controller

What can I say? This is a microsoft licensed product so it functions like it should. I decided to buy the controller to play pc games with it and it works great for that. I also put it aside just in case i run out of batteries for my wireless controller. That happens occasionally for me.
The only thing i can complain about is what has happened to all of my xbox controllers. The joysticks get broken in and become loose or very stiff taking away from the accuracy of movements in games. I have kind of learned to deal with it with time, however, so it isn't a huge problem.
What's great about it: great for pc, no batteries, lengthy cord
What's not so great: joysticks become stiff overime affecting gameplay

The PS3 has my favorite controllers. I love how comfortable they fit in my hand and the joysticks are perfect for accuracy no matter what game your playing. They never seem to wear out all that much either. You can't go wrong with the official sony ps3 controller. Especially the dualshock 3. If you're looking to buy a ps3 controller then fork out the extra cash and get quality. Period.
P.S. the white controller is pretty good looking. I highly recommend it.

Still the best GTA in my opinion
on June 17, 2012

I started playing GTA 4 again and I thought about how much fun I have had with the past titles. San Andreas is still my favorite.
San Andreas is the definition of a sandbox game to me. It is a game that showed me that you really can do pretty much anything you want. The map is gigantic and full of variety. You want to cruise around a big vegas type city? Go ahead. Do you want to hang out in a small quiet suburb? Ok. Or do you want to go in the back country and jump over mountain tops or even cruise in the sand dunes? You can do that too. I was amazed at how this world feels real and it is fun to explore and see it all.
Yes the game has its problems. It isn't the best looking game and it may have its fair share of technical issues but I almost don't even count these minor complaints. A lot of them are more comical than annoyances.
The story is long and the missions are crazy and fun to complete. Plus, there are a whole bunch of fun side missions to earn extra cash and respect for your gang. These include but are not limited to: gang wars to take over turf, robberies, pimping, races, sky diving, and many more. Add in the fact that you can customize the main character how you please(clothes, hair, physic, etc) and almost all the vehicle types in the game(color, decals, tires, tinting, etc) and how you can upgrade your weapon skills in order to handle them better(dual pistols and smgs, etc) and you have so many options to choose from in how you play the game and you have one complete game.
The voice work in the game is awesome as well. There are so many characters you meet in the game and all of them have their own distinct and interesting personalites and their voices are excellently acted.
If you haven't played this one and your wondering if you would be able to go back and play a last gen game definitely give it a go anyway. I have kept my ps2 all this time because I pop this one in every now and then to play it again among other select titles. I think the fun in this game holds up after all this time. I love GTA 4 but was a little disapointed at how toned down it was. It kind of seemed like a step back for me in a way.
Bottom line: if you want to play a game with almost limitless freedom to do what you want then definitely play this game. Even today, there aren't many games that offer the amount of content and freedom that GTA San Andreas offers.
What's great about it: story, characters, voice acting, massive world, so much to do, character and vehicle customization
What's not so great: bugs and glitches that come with a big game like this

Probably my favorite game of all time!
on June 17, 2012
Posted by: ClintCommander

This really has to be my favorite game of all time. I know I might sound like a fanboy but I don't care. This game is incredible. This is the first game that showed my what the PS3 was really capable of. Heck, this game is the reason why I bought a ps3 in the first place.
Everything about this game is amazing. Polished to perfection.
The first thing you will notice is the visual quality of MGS4. This game is still one of the best looking games out there hands down. You literally cant tell between the cutscenes and the actual gameplay. Its that good looking. While I began playing I watched a cutscene. Snake hopped out of the back of a truck and just stood there. I was wondering why the cutscene was taking so long and why Snake was just standing there motionless. Little did I know that I was supposed to be controlling him in this instance. It might sound rediculous but it's true. The game blends everything together so seamlessly that gameplay graphics are the cutscene graphics as well.
The story is brilliant as well and it is told brilliantly. There are many people that say that this is pretty much a movie. While there is some truth to that dont let it scare you away from playing this game. Also, I cant stress this enough: Don't expect to understand the story if you haven't played any of the other MGS games. Newcomers will just feel confused and not know what is going on.
The cutscenes are perfectly done and move the story along. There are a lot of them but not so many that end up watching more than playing. There is definitely a lot of action to experience in this game.
The action in this game has been pretty much perfected. In the other titles there has always been a fixed camera. Not anymore. You free to move it anywhere you please. Also, gone is the frustration of only being able to go prone and standing to move around. There is a crouching position included now.
The gunplay has been refined as well. It feels a lot more natural being able to aim over the shoulder like in other 3rd person titles.
There are so many refinements in the game that I can't name them all. Like the AI. It is incredible to watch the enemy and friendly npcs react to different situations in an intelligent way. They will use cover and squad tactics to stay alive.
The bosses are fun as well. They are some of the best, not only in the MGS games, but in general.
As you can tell, I love this game. It so engrossing and fun that its hard to put down once you start. The graphics, the story, the voice acting, the gameplay, everything is done so well in this game.
For those that haven't played this game, you probably haven't played much of the others. If you haven't then definitely track them down in one of their many forms and play them. And be prepared to experience on of the coolest stories ever told in a videogame.
What's great about it: some of the best graphics around, MGS gameplay perfected, camo suit, epic boss fights, everything
What's not so great: it ends

One impressive game
on June 17, 2012
Posted by: ClintCommander
from UT
Grand theft auto 4 is one of those games that makes me marvel at how much detail got put into it. It's such a big game but so much close attention was paid to make it play well and look good as well.
The graphics are great. Liberty City is fully realized city with tons of people and traffic. Its one of the most impressive cities in a game that I have seen. It truly feels alive.
The story is great overall. The main character is Niko Belic, a russian immigrant that arrives to the US on a ship. From there you pretty much work with all kinds of shady folk in order to make money. Niko has his motives that he works toward throughout the game. He's an interesting character and his story is an interesting one to play through. Its a lengthy one as well.
If I had to say the one thing I think rockstar nailed down almost perfectly in this game I would have to say the physics. From the people to the vehicles in the game everything reacts in such realistic way. It's very apparent to how much attention went in to making everything act realistically. Each car has its own kind of physics. Trucks are heavy so they will plow through other vehicles a lot easier than cars. Different cars have better handling than others making it so you have to adjust to the weight of each one to get turning down. When a pedestrian is hit. They will react realistically. If you clip their leg or arm they will jolt and whip around in a violent way. If you hit them straight on they will fold on top of your hood in a very gruesome spectacle. To put it simply its the best ragdoll effect that I have seen in a game. Even today.
If you shoot an enemy they will react accordingly. And each weapon has its own power to it. If you shoot someone in the leg while they are running they will topple to the ground. My favorite is shooting their leg while they are climbing steps. What follows is an amusingly realistic topple down the stairs. If you take advantage of the physics in the game you will have a lot of fun watching what happens in each segment of the game.
The missions in this game are very well done overall. Some of them aren't that great and sometimes leave you wondering what the point of it was but for the most part they take advantage of the strong points in the game. My favorite mission of all time is in the game. It involves a bank heist and has you running from the cops trying to escape. It's just awesome.
There is a great addition the the gta series that helps immensely in missions: the cover system. This mechanic works well. Niko is able to snap into cover easily almost anywhere. Behind cars, dumpsters, walls, etc. While in cover he can aim, pop up, shoot and repeat. This makes firefights a lot more enjoyable than the ones from past gta games.
Once you have completed the single-player campaign you can hop into some of the most entertaining multiplayer available. There are a bunch of different game modes to play including team deathmatch and you can play them throughout the whole city or you can choose a section of it to play in. You can have up to 16 players in a match.
I did give this game 5 stars but I don't think this game is perfect. There is pop in every now and then that can get annoying sometimes. Combat in tight spaces doesn't work all that well and can result in some frustrating deaths. And Nikos movements are a little too stiff for my tastes. These complaints are minor, however. This game is just an awesome package. I recommend it.
What's great about it: cover mechanic, driving, gunplay, missions, radio stations, characters, multiplayer is a blast
What's not so great: on foot controls feel a little stiff for me

I recommend getting this set of games if you have played GTA 4. The price makes it worth it. It provides both of the extra campaigns for the gta 4 game.
The first one to come out was the Lost and the Damned. In this one you are a biker in a biker gang. The story is great and the extras are great. Who wants an automatic shotgun? I know I do. It is still set in Liberty City but it provides a different experience from Niko's. The new activities made for this game are a blast as well. I could do the harley races with bats all day. A very entertaining GTA experience.
The Ballad of Gay Tony, the other campaign, didn't really offer that same kind of entertainment for me, however. The story wasn't all that interesting and a lot of the missions werent all that fun for me and a lot of the characters just ended up annoying me. I do have to give props to rockstar for how they handled the game, though. I was afraid that they were going to just beat the whole gay subject over my head until I went crazy. I thought they were going to push the whole gay rights thing through the game but thankfully they didn't touch that subject and just focused on other matters. Kudos.
The side missions in the game were just boring and the fun ones just got repetitive due to the same situations repeating themselves multiple times. Skydiving does make an appearance, however, and it is enjoyable to do. Also, the added armory is pretty awesome too. This campaign isn't terrible by a long shot but compared to GTA 4 and LATD it wasn't as enjoyable. The only real fun I got from the game was from seeing how this story was integrated into Niko's from GTA 4.
All in all I give Lost and the Damned a 9/10 and Gay Tony a 7/10. So pick this up. Who knows, you might enjoy The Ballad of Gay Tony more than I did.
What's great about it: 2 big expansions set in the GTA4 world, fun new activities to take part in, new weapons, LatD is fantastic
What's not so great: TBoGT isn't as strong as it could have been

A fantastic sequel

Mass Effect 2 is a continuation of the fantastic first Mass Effect. If you have played Mass Effect then you need to play this game. Mainly because the great story is progressed and the game is quite an improvement over the last game.
I was very satisfied with the game and recommend it to anyone. The story is great, the way you interact to change the story is great and the gunplay is finely tuned and very enjoyable. The graphics are incredible as well making this one of the best games to look at.
If you haven't played the first one then definitely play that one before playing this one. You will have an extremely hard time understanding what is going on if you don't. Plus, you can import your character from the last game into this one. It's not only a cool addition but it comes with a handful of in-game bonuses.
What's great about it: great story, import your character from the first, amazing visuals, decisions

A ton of destruction but not much else
on June 17, 2012
Posted by: ClintCommander
from UT
I have been a red faction fan ever since the first game for the pc. I loved the sequel as well. The destructibility in those games set the standard for destructible environments in my opinion.
I was excited to hear about another red faction coming out. I was worried when I heard that it would be a third person shooter instead of a first person one like the last two. In some ways my fears got put to rest after playing through the game, but others were only realized.
I start out by saying that this game is fun. Right when you jump into the singleplayer game you get to experience the awesome destruction you can create with game's impressive destruction engine. At first you just have a hammer and some charges. You first just learn how to take away the base supports for some buildings and then watch them topple under their own weight. Its an awesome sight to behold. Especially since the buildings are structures that you could enter and explore beforehand. This is what the game does extremely well. It puts plenty of tools in your hands and pretty much just lets you loose on the enemy and their base structures in a good sized open world.
Yes, there is a story campaign set in this world but that is where this game starts to falter. You see, this is just one of those stories that just gives you context for why you are blowing the life out of everything. You just go to a mission starter and then a guy tells you what to go and demolish. That's fine by me, however since destroying things is a lot of fun.
The fights are pretty intense in the game. It can be fun but sometimes they get pretty frustrating. If you stir up enough trouble with the enemy they will just send endless waves of guys to take you down. It can get to be you against one hundred. Your health does regenerate but if you can't get anywhere without enemies to let your health regenerate you experience a frustrating death. This is one of those games where you get in, destroy, and get out as soon as possible.
That being said, it is the biggest problem toward the end of the game. The story gets kind of and the missions get frustratingly hard. You pretty much just get sent on a bunch of suicide missions toward the end of the game.
The game runs well and looks pretty good for an openworld game. There are a few bugs here and there, but nothing too bad.
If you are a fan of the other red faction games then you may or may not like this game. The story is a let down and doesnt live up to the standards of the previous games. There is a ton of fun to be had, however, leveling huge structures to the ground. Its some of the most destructive fun you can have in a game.
What's great about it: lots of destructive fun, a good assortment of sidemissions, minimal bugs and glitches
What's not so great: the story a little dumb , too difficult towards the end, gets a little repetitive
I would recommend this to a friend!
