Atmosphere! Atmosphere! Atmosphere!

It took me awhile to play the predecessor of Metro Last Light, Metro 2033. There weren't many reviewers that gave the game positive feedback. I did find it intriguing, however, the amount of interest the game was garnering from the general public. I saw the game on sale and decided to give it a try. While I did find the game was definitely flawed, I found quite a bit to like. From it's detailed and atmospheric environments to it's tense action I got absorbed in Metro 2033.
Metro Last Light is exactly what I wanted it to be. It is a fantastic sequel that improves greatly upon it's predecessor while upping the ante for the FPS genre in general. If you have never thought that atmosphere was an important aspect in games then I think Metro:LL will change your mind. The game just oozes it. It shows that the developer spent a lot of time filling the game with detail. A lot of detail. I have never felt so enveloped in a game world. To sell this aspect of the game the developers had to make a visually competent game. Metro:LL is a great looking PC game and it runs great. I never had a problem with slowdown. There is the occasional minor graphical glitch but nothing that would spoil the experience.
The action is greatly improved this time around. Stealth is greatly enhanced and is encouraged. I guess if I had one complaint about the game it would be that stealth can make the game almost too easy. I would recommend increasing the difficulty from normal if you are planning on going the stealth route.
I greatly enjoyed every second of Metro Last Light. Everything great about the original Metro is kept intact, but improved. For me this ranks as one of the finest FPS games I have played.

BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter like you've never seen. Just ask the judges from E3 2011, where the Irrational Games title won more than 75 editorial awards, including Game Critics Award's Best of Show.Set in 1912, players assume the role of former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, sent to the flying city of Columbia on a rescue mission. His target? Elizabeth, imprisoned since childhood. During their daring escape, Booker and Elizabeth form a powerful bond — one that lets Booker augment his own abilities with her world-altering control over the environment. Together, they fight from high-speed Sky-Lines, in the streets and houses of Columbia, on giant zeppelins and in the clouds, all while learning to harness an expanding arsenal of weapons and abilities and immersing players in a story that is not only steeped in profound thrills and surprises, but also invests its characters with what IGN called "emotional ties (that) will continue to set the bar in gaming."

Having just beaten this game and getting the gist of what the heck just happened(after many minutes of pondering) I have to say that this is not only one of the best gaming experiences I have had this year, but of my lifetime. I assure you that this is not coming from just another fanboy. In fact, after playing the first game and loving it, I played the second one and was a little jaded by the bioshock experience as I reached the end of the game. I still loved the second one but it wasn't as impactful as my experience with the first game.
I say this because when I heard a third one was being made I was skeptical since I didn't know how they could make the bioshock experience feel fresh. I thought the experience would just grow stale this time around. So, going into this game with that attitude I wasn't really planning on having my mind blown.
Well, it wasn't just blown. My mind was strapped to a rocket, shot into the stratosphere and detonated. Everything about this game is just brilliant! This is an extremely well crafted game with only very minor flaws. Everything from the gameplay, music, voice acting, setting, visuals, etc. has been created with so much care and attention that it's staggering.
This is especially true for the story. This is one of the best stories I have experienced. Not only does the ending redefine the beginning moments of this game, but it also adds a new layer to the franchise as a whole. It's truly amazing and something you have to experience.
I get very frustrated when I read and hear that this isn't a true bioshock game. I don't understand that accusation one bit. This definitely felt like a bioshock game to me in the best ways possible. This is just a bioshock injected with fresh ideas. Ideas that created for me the same amount of awe and wonder the first bioshock did. Ideas that perfectly fit within the bioshock franchise. Explaining this would spoil the game. Experiencing how everything fits and the ending to this game are moments I won't forget.

If you thought the nightmare was over, think again. The madness of isolation and the reality at hand are one and the same as engineer Isaac Clarke returns for another blood-curdling adventure in the sequel to the critically acclaimed Dead Space. The terror of being hunted by the government and haunted by a dead lover merge into a single, cohesive paralyzing emotion — but you have to persevere despite the creeping paranoia of dementia and the grotesquery slouching within every shadow. The Necromorphs are ripping the massive city to pieces and if you're going to survive "The Sprawl", you'll have to get desperate in order to last in Dead Space 2.Isaac Clarke isn't free of the terror of his situation, but don't worry — it's about to get worse. You'll have to seize opportunity by the throat if you're going to survive being hunted by the government and withstand visions of a dead girlfriend. Equip yourself with the tools to decimate and eviscerate the horrors surrounding you, like improved telekinesis, trip mines or even hull breaches to suck those things back into the dead of space where they belong. It won't be a walk in the park, though. In fact, you'll experience "The Sprawl" like never before in zero gravity with full 360° movement, destroying creatures in new weightless combat and unique, physics-based puzzles. Don't fret, you can share the loneliness of space — and the Necromorphs — with friends online in skirmishes to see if anyone really can hear you scream in space.

A tightly crafted survival-horror experience

Man, am I excited to play number 3! Not only is Dead Space 2 one of the finest survival-horror games I have played, but one of the finest games I have played period. This sequel and continuation of Isaac Clark's fight with the necromorphs and his insanity is a fantastic, horrifying, and intense experience.
While I really enjoyed the first Dead Space, I wasn't too keen on the constant back-tracking and the lack of distinction between environments. I was very happy to see that Visceral rectified that greatly and refined many other areas of the game as well.
This time, Isaac Clark is a fully voiced character. While him being silent in the last game detracted nothing from my experience with that game, it definitely adds something to the overall experience here. Isaac is not only fighting the terrifying necromorphs but also his quick descent into insanity. Hearing him converse and argue with his hallucinations is harrowing and makes the game that much more intense and interesting to play. The voice acting is superb. You quickly sympathize with him thus making you care about his situation and what happens to him.
While the original Dead Space looked great, Dead Space 2 continues to up the ante in the visuals department. This is some of the best use of lighting in a game I have seen. Isaac in his suit looks as detailed as ever and just looks awesome. The necromorphs are incredibly detailed and are as terrifying as ever to encounter. Overall, this is just a sharper looking Dead Space. It's a very tightly crafted game and one you rarely see a flaw in any aspect of its design.
The gameplay is as fun and intense as ever. New weapons and enemies are introduced to encourage more experimentation(even though I just stuck with upgrading the plasma cutter and line gun). If the necromorphs from the original Dead Space didn't really give you goose bumps, wait until you meet the necromorphed infants and children for the first time. Their tormented wails and cries as they crawled and sprinted towards me made me shudder and cower in fear multiple times during the game. Fortunately, the aiming and firing of your weapons is smooth and accurate allowing you to severe the necessary vital appendages of your enemies easily.
Of course, no survival-horror game can do without a great audio experience. Dead Space more than delivers on this front as well. The voice acting is excellent all around. The music fits perfectly with the game. The sounds from the environment are used perfectly and each necromorph has their own terrifying sound. All of this comes through clearly and powerfully especially with a sound system.
I can't recommend this game enough to action/survival-horror fans. This is an expertly crafted game that everyone(if you're old enough to stomach the extreme gore/violence that is) should give a chance. It's extremely thrilling and purely entertaining. Very worthy of 5 stars.
What's great about it: visuals, atmosphere, audio, finely -tuned gameplay, terrifying, pretty much everything
What's not so great: end chapter can get a little overwhelmingly difficult

Everything comes together

This is one of those uncommon gems in gaming where everything in a huge game comes together to create an amazing experience. I just completed the game today(not the post-game content) and I felt compelled to write a little something regarding it.
The main character, Oliver, is a seemingly typical young boy who lives in a small USA town called Motorville. The game spends a little bit of time introducing you to Oliver, his mother, the town, etc. at the beginning of the game. My expectations of the visuals were met as the game opened and I got to spend a little time wandering around town. It really captures the feel of an anime film.
After a tragic event happens that involves his mother, Oliver is introduced to a beautifully realized fantasy world that is parallel to his own. He meets a fairy named Mr. Drippy and he asks Oliver's aid to save the fantasy world from an evil power. Oliver also learns that he has the chance to save his mother in the process.
What transpires afterwards is one of the most heartwarming tales I have experienced in a video game in a long time, if not ever. Along the way, Oliver meets many interesting characters, a few of which accompany him throughout his travels. He also travels to many parts of the land via the overworld in the game that has its own distinct look and feel. Parts of the land are covered in snow while others are covered in desert sands. Each part of the land is beautifully realized and exploring the towns and other areas within them in a treat.
Oliver eventually learns that he has the potential to be a great wizard. Along the way he learns dozens of spells to aid him in his adventures and also gains the ability to use familiars. Familiars are magical creatures quite similar to pokemon that are created from someone's soul. Oliver can attack on his own but a familiar may have a strength where Oliver may have a weakness. Some have stronger physical attacks while others have stronger magical attacks. Others may have great defense but may lack offensive capabilities and so on. Adding to this is the affinity of each one regarding the different elements. Oliver and those that accompany him can have up to three familiars with them at one time while the rest are sent to a familiar retreat until they are selected by you to be put in your party from one of many points throughout the world. Capturing and finding the familiars that compliment your style of play best and leveling them up is extremely satisfying and addictive. Constantly swapping between Oliver and his familiars to best handle the situation at hand during a battle is very exciting and rewarding.
While the game certainly has a cartoony aesthetic to it it does not mean this game is only for a younger audience. There is a lot here for people of all ages to enjoy. While the game isn't one of the most difficult JRPGs I've played it definitely does require some thinking and strategy especially during the later parts of the game. The story does have a lighter tone. Even the most sensitive people won't be able to find anything remotely offensive here. That doesn't mean the story is any less powerful. There are many touching moments throughout the game along with some narrative twists and turns that cause suffering for the characters and their world that they must overcome. I don't want to go much deeper than that for fear of spoiling anything but I will say that I loved the story and how it was presented. While the dialogue can get a bit sappy and cheesy at times, i easily overlooked it since this kind of dialogue was usually coming from the younger and innocent characters in the game.
I can't recommend this game enough if you're a JRPG fan. It's truly an amazing game. The combat and exploration draw inspiration from the fantastic Tales series and the Pokemon games. The game also reminded of some elements from the Zelda series as well, mainly the fantastic music and the variety of the different dungeon-like areas you explore during the game. I hope these games continue to do well here so I can continue to have great gaming experiences like this.
If I have any complaints about the game they are: There could be more spoken dialogue in the game. These segments of the characters being fully-voiced were too few and far between in my opinion. Mainly because I loved them so much when they occurred. It brought that much more personality to the characters.
Also, Oliver's AI companions could be a little bit smarter.
What's great about it: visuals, music, combat, story
What's not so great: AI companions

Far Cry 3 is an open world first-person shooter set on an island unlike any other. A place where heavily armed warlords traffic in slaves. Where outsiders are hunted for ransom. And as you embark on a desperate quest to rescue your friends, you realize that the only way to escape this darkness — is to embrace it.

I have just recently finished the story to this game and I thought I would just write a small review saying that this is one of the finest fps games I have played. Definitely a top contender for shooter of the year. The visuals, especially the island, look amazing. The action is intense, varied, and extremely fun. There are so many options on how you tackle a situation.
There are plenty of things to do on the island to raise your money and xp. The money can be spent on more powerful weapons(which there are plenty of) and the xp can be spent on upgrades and abilities for your character that really enhance the way the game is played.
I will admit that I wasn't a huge fan of the FC2. It was fun at first but quickly became repetitive and boring due to many flaws in the game. Thankfully, FC3 contains none of these flaws. This is definitely the Far Cry that we have been wanting and I am incredibly excited to see where it goes from here.
What's great about it: graphics, gameplay options, lots to do
What's not so great: minor bugs

A grip that reduces playability
on December 29, 2012
Posted by: ClintCommander

I was excited when I found this grip at best buy. The vita feels all right by itself in my hands but I can tell that bigger hands would have a hard time keeping comfortable during extended play. I thought the grip would make it more comfortable and the triggers would help with gameplay. While the grip is comfortable, the triggers make hitting the L1 and R1 buttons of the vita feel really stiff. This might not be a huge problem in some games, but with shooters where trigger reaction time is key it is very apparent that this grip greatly reduces the effectiveness of those button presses.
My advice is to find a grip without the triggers. If it weren't for those this grip would be great.
What's great about it: feels comfortable during playtime
What's not so great: makes hitting triggers more akward and stiff

A game worth saving!

This game is great. Im so glad it was saved from never appearing. This is not just another gta clone. This is a True Crime game through and through. The story is great. You play as Wei, an undercover cop trying to infiltrate the triads and bring them down. Much easier said than done. The story isn't original but the way it is told and acted is fantastic. You'll get invested in the characters and you'll play to find out what happens next.
You'll also enjoy exploring the city in the game as well. It's a realistic and busy city. It's fun to explore while on foot thanks to the focus on free running in the game and also driving in one of the many vehicles in the game. The driving controls are arcadey but aren't excessively so. Plus the vehicles have a ramming function that is perfect for slamming other vehicles off the road. It's awesome.
You'll mostly be using your fists in the game. Guns are pretty scarce at first. That's not a bad thing, however. In fact, I found it to be refreshing. Wei starts out with a basic move set but as you gain experience points with by completing triad and police missions he'll acquire more moves that look great and are fun to pull off. Fighting isn't very complicated. There is mainly just an attack button and a counter button. There are different enemy types however and Wei can grapple an enemy and perform one of many satisfying environment kills. It's a fighting system that reminds me of Arkham City and Assassins Creed.
There is a lot of variety in this game. I was learning new things about the game every time I played it. The first time I jumped off my vehicle to hijack another in a high speed chase was a great feeling. I loved this game because it was always throwing something new at me to tackle. Something that not many games do recently.
If I had any complaints about the game it it would be about the visuals of the game. They aren't bad but there are a few bugs. The characters have a plastic doll look to them. While animations look great you'll constantly see enemies clipping into walls and objects and there are only a few variations of each character type. Free running and movement can feel imprecise as well. You might climb a wall you didn't want to while running and you might not be able to target the enemy you want very quickly either. These aren't complaints that detracted much from my enjoyment of the game, however. I recommend picking this one up.
What's great about it: great gameplay, always introducing new things, fighting system, interesting city to explore, great story
What's not so great: glitches and bugs, character models look like dolls, some areas of the game could have been greatly expanded on

Pleasantly Surprised!
on June 21, 2012
Posted by: ClintCommander

I just want to start out by saying that I would give this game a 9.5 since I can't. This is one of the only games that really created a battle within me trying to decide if I wanted to play it. On one hand I have always loved RPGs and from what I had seen the combat and exploration in this game looked to be right up my alley. However, I had heard and read about the brutal difficulty and it hardly offering anything of a tutorial.
I finally decided to buy a used copy for cheap and play it. While the game is definitely challenging and pretty much leaves you to figure out almost everything on your own, I have enjoyed exploring, fighting, and even dying within the world of Dark Souls. It's addicting.
I didn't enjoy the game at first, however. After you create your character from a wide variety of different classes and are shown a little bit how movement of your character works you get placed within the world of the game with not much direction. Sure, there is a guy within your proximity that explains a bit of what you need to do but offers little in terms of direction. This proved pretty frustrating for me since I kept going in different directions trying to find where to go only to get attacked by incredibly tough enemies and killed. I knew the game was going to be difficult but getting killed by one hit at the get go seemed too much. I have to admit, I looked up where to go on online guides from other players. Ever since then I have have been glued to my tv learning from past mistakes and figuring out how everything works(with the occasional help of forums of course).
This is one of the reasons I find the game so addicting. It's challenging but it rewards you greatly for overcoming obstacles that you once thought were impossible. Looking back a few hours of playing the game you can really see how much better you are presently. There have been boss fights that kept killing me over and over again but I would finally find the weakness, exploit it, and kill it while reaping the numerous rewards crucial for leveling up, upgrading equipment, buying equipment, etc. This also even applies to many of the smaller and more common enemies in the game as well. Your patience is always repaid.
This game would fall apart if the gameplay wasn't up to the task. Thankfully, it's fantastic. The control scheme is simple to understand but difficult to adapt to each enemy encounter. There is definitely the factor of the level of your character and the equipment being used, but largely its your quick thinking and reflexes that determine the outcome of each encounter. This makes it so its almost always your fault when you die. You need to always be aware of your surroundings and never take your hands off the controller. The only thing I really have to complain about is the fact that you can't really pause the game while playing. You better make darn sure youre in a safe place if you plan on taking a short break.
The game looks fantastic. Each area I have seen of the game has been vastly different from the last and they have all looked great. Whether its a forest area, castle grounds, or a dank dark sewer I have always enjoyed the incredible design and look of each of the environments I have found myself in. This doesn't just apply to environments, however. The character models(your character included) look fantastic. They are detailed and animated well. The bosses are exceptionally well done.
One thing that did surprise me about the game is how great the online aspect of the game is. In an RPG like this I figured that the MP experience would just be an afterthought. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying pretty much everything about it. You can use different markers that you acquire as items throughout the game to right messages to other players, spawn friends' characters into your game, and even invade a random player's world in an attempt to kill their character for some of their equipment. Im sure there's more but these are the ones that really stood out to me. There's nothing more satisfying that someone invading your game and killing them. It's a great feeling.
I could write a ton more about the game but I'll end it here. I can't believe how much Im enjoying the game. All I can say is that if you're an RPG fan then definitely give the game a try. Even if you're turned off by some of the descriptions about it you need to experience the game anyway. You'll probably be glad you did. Remember: you can always learn how things work from other players on the internet forums and such. I figure that everyone playing the game is in it together so I don't feel so bad in seeking help from others.
What's great about it: great challenge/reward ratio, massive game, beautiful graphics, near perfect gameplay
What's not so great: hardly any tutorials, can be extremely difficult

This is one of the defining moments in video-games for me. One of those games that I compare to everything else that comes out from then on. When I heard that this was (previously) only coming for the 360 that is when I made the decision to purchase one.
It didn't disappoint. They almost kept every promise they made about the game. I had never experienced an adventure like this before. The graphics are spectacular and exploring every inch of the massive landscape was a delight. There are a ton of memorable quests and the story keeps you playing to see what happens next.
Even though Skyrim is out and is a better game in my opinion, it would still be very worth it to play this one as well if you haven't before. I already call it a classic.
What's great about it: huge world, were some of the best graphics, so many quests
What's not so great: glitches here and there
I would recommend this to a friend!
