Too Many Compromises for the Price
on August 4, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro, you'll find the controller itself, 4.5ft USB-A to USB-C cable, a wireless USB-A adapter, an extended joystick cap, a short convex joystick cap, and a manual. The controller charges via a USB-C port at the top and also includes a 3.5m headphone/mic jack at the bottom, as well as switches on the rear to choose between PS5 or PC mode, and wired or wireless mode.
The controller includes a total of 6 remappable buttons: two on the top of the controller and four on the back. All of them feel nice and are pretty easy to access, though it may be tougher for some people to reach the buttons on the very top. The shape buttons, front triggers, and top remappable buttons feel like computer mouse switches, rather than the traditional mesh-style controller buttons. They feel fine to play with, but I would rather have them be the traditional style. The rear triggers include locks to reduce the actuation point for games like first-person shooters; when locked, the triggers also have the mouse switch feel to them. The controller in general feels much more like an Xbox controller than a PlayStation controller: the left joystick and D-pad are switched, the back triggers are wedges rather than the wing-style triggers on PlayStation controllers, and the controller just has more of a general Xbox controller shape and feel.
Connecting the controller is quick and simple (on PC). The controller doesn't allow for a direct Bluetooth connection; instead, you have to connect the controller to your PS5/PC via the included USB cable or USB-C wireless adapter. This is unfortunate for people who may not have many free USB slots on their devices to spare (including me). There's no noticeable delay when using the controller in wired or wireless mode in-game.
Customizing the remappable buttons as well as the controller RGB requires that you download a mobile app. All remappable buttons can be mapped to each button-style input from the controller: shape buttons, D-pad, triggers, and joystick presses. There's also a mapping option for a joystick "clutch"; when pressed, the joystick of choice (or both joysticks) will move at a fraction of the actual input, allowing for much more control for precise movements, such as slow camera movements or moving a character slowly. The controller RGB is limited to only a few lighting options due to there only being two light bars on the controller. The headphone jack works in both wired and wireless mode, with no noticeable audio delay in wireless mode.
All games were tested on PC. I had absolutely no problems playing games like Rocket League, Minecraft, Roblox, and Rainbow Six Siege with the controller. In some cases, PC games accepted input from the controller in PS5 mode (namely Rocket League), however, most games will require the controller to be in PC mode. Battery life yielded a just alright 5-8 hour lifespan with the RGB enabled.
On the downside, personally, the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro feels cheaply made. The materials used don't have a very premium feel, and the controller feels light for its size. The controller's main plastic shell feels subpar and the rubber on the joystick caps feels like it could easily wear off over time. I'm not entirely sure, but it seems as if the shape buttons have each shape printed on top of the button, rather than having the shapes injected into the button itself, which may lead to the shapes fading over time.
On the plus side, the joysticks are made from metal, meaning you don't have to worry about them being shaved down over time from the sides of the joystick holes. The joystick caps connect to the joysticks themselves via strong magnets, meaning you won't have to worry about them falling or slipping out in the middle of a game.
Overall, at the controller's price point, considering the inconvenience it brings (no standard BT support, forced to download Razer app, very limited customizability, no rumble), as well as the fact that you have to be okay with switching to an Xbox style controller if you're planning on using this with your PS5, it's incredibly hard to recommend, even if you had the money to spend and preferred using an Xbox-style controller for your PS5 or PC.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Very good all around laptop
on August 2, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the Dell XPS 15, you'll find the laptop itself, a 130w charger, a USB-C to USB 3.0 and HDMI 2.0 adapter, and some documentation. The USB-C splitter is very useful as the laptop itself only includes 3 USB-C ports (two of which are Thunderbolt), an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The XPS 15 has a premium feeling build quality and a sleek design. The screen hinge feels very solid with very little wobble, though the hinge doesn't go back very far even for a non-2-in-1 laptop, so it's important to be mindful of that. Opening up the laptop, the screen itself fills up as much space as it can as the bezels are very thin. The keyboard is made of smooth and premium feeling plastic. The keys themselves have almost no wobble and feel nice to type on. The touchpad feels very nice and is very large, with the downside that it may get in the way when trying to type.

The laptop includes a fingerprint and face scanner for Windows Hello integration, both of which work as intended. The onboard speakers are decent. When listening to music, I noticed a slight warble sound at very specific frequencies, as well as very complex songs with lots of different elements sounding somewhat mashed together. However, the speakers work very well when watching TV or movies as they're clear and offer just enough bass to make the experience enjoyable, as well as plenty of volume. The laptop's camera is mediocre, having a very fuzzy look even for 720p.

The laptop's performance is very promising. The screen offers plenty of brightness, vibrant colors, and good contrast, allowing for images to have a crisp and pleasing look. Furthermore, the screen resolution is 1920x1200 (16:10) leaving more room for multitasking. App loading is quick and multitasking is very possible. The laptop is very capable of light gaming, with promising performance in games like Minecraft (~150-200fps at fancy graphics), Roblox (~60-120fps at max graphics, depending on the game), and Rocket League (~100fps at max graphics). Despite the screen's satisfactory performance in general usage, however, it's not made for gaming, as it's slightly choppy and there seems to be a very slight ghosting effect. If you're not a hardcore gamer, you shouldn't worry about noticing or being annoyed by this as it still works great. Even while gaming, the fans are very quiet and won't be distracting. Battery life during general usage, such as working on word documents or streaming TV was very acceptable, allowing for about 8-12 hours of general activities on a single charge. Gaming will bring that number down to around 3-6 hours depending on how demanding the game is.

One thing to keep in mind is installing updates and drivers upon receiving the laptop. I had several issues such as Windows Update AND Dell SupportAssist failing to install certain updates. Since I got the laptop, I've had graphics driver issues where every few hours the screen would begin glitching and flickering for a couple of minutes and would return to normal. I tried resetting the laptop to a factory image, but the issues still returned. This could be a factory Windows system image issue, or it could be a user error. Still, something to keep in mind.

Excluding the speaker and camera performance and (possible) update and driver issues, the Dell XPS 15 works great and is very capable. Overall, this laptop will serve you very well.

Excellent Wi-fi Mesh System
on July 25, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the Linksys Velop Pro 6E Mesh Router, you will find the 3 nodes and power supplies, a short ethernet cable, and a Quick Start card. The nodes have a 3.75” square foot print and stand 7.75” tall. The power supplies feature a permanently affixed 4’ cord with a barrel connector.
Overall, the setup process was very fast and painless. Directions for setup and configuration are provided through the Linksys app, which I installed on an Android phone. I had the nodes configured and positioned throughout the house in just minutes after unboxing.
Coverage has been excellent and switching between nodes seamless. Speeds on the main router as well as the child nodes is excellent. The tri-band functionality has also performed flawlessly: Older devices that rely on a 2.4ghz band that had previously had a hard time connecting to my old ISP-provided router connected and worked without issue with the new Linksys network.
The Linksys app has provided a great view into the details of my new network. Not only can I see what devices are on it, but I can see what node they are attached to and what band they’re utilizing. It also provides additional functionality such as a Speed Check and Parental Controls (scheduling pauses or blocking websites).
Overall, the Linksys Velop Pro 6E Mesh Router has been a great upgrade to my old hodge podge network. I highly recommend it.

Good Multi-Purpose Android Tablet
on June 28, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the Google Pixel Tablet, you will find the tablet, the speaker dock, a charging brick, and some documentation. The tablet itself measures 10.125” x 6.6875”. It features a gorilla glass front and soft-touch matte finish back. Around the sides you'll find 4 speakers, USB-C, the volume rocker and finger-print enabled power button. The speaker dock stands 4” tall and 6.5” wide. It is wrapped in cloth around the sides and has a barrel connector for power on the back. The charging brick features a 5ft, permanently attached cord.
Setup is super easy. Power on the tablet, follow the prompts to set up your profile, update your system and apps (which can take some time), and go. The speaker just needs to be plugged in. Then the tablet attaches to the speaker with powerful magnets. Quite securely, I might add.
The tablet has an attractive 10.95” IPS LED display. With an advertised resolution of 2560 x 1600, the display is bright, vibrant, and crisp with excellent viewing angles. On-board audio is clear and offers plenty of volume but is lacking bass, which is admittedly not uncommon for tablet audio. Performance has been snappy with consistently smooth animations and quickly loading apps. Cold boot times take about 10 seconds. The finger-print power button feels small to me, but has worked consistently. Battery life has been more than sufficient. Charging can be accomplished by placing the tablet on the dock or by connecting a USB-C charger to the tablet itself.
Android 13 comes pre-installed and features a lot of really nice optimizations for the larger screen. Functions like easy access to split screen and the ability to drag pictures from Google Photos to a draft Gmail are super nice and work really well. Also, multiple user accounts can be easily added and switched between, if you are using the tablet in a shared environment.
The speaker dock is a nice inclusion. It sets the tablet up for use as a home hub, replacing older devoted hubs with a newer, multi-purpose device. The hub features no battery and no wireless connectivity (Bluetooth) and only works with the tablet docked. Audio from the speaker dock offers more volume over the tablet alone, but the quality is only just OK.
On the downsides, there is no headphone jack and no expandable storage. The use of a barrel connector for the speaker dock seems really dated. And the dock only provides 15w of charging to the tablet.
Additionally, there are still a lot of big name apps that are still not optimized for Android tablets; Instagram, Twitter and Facebook are just a few. The apps work, but they are basically just large phone apps that have not been optimized for the larger screen.
Those few negatives aside, the tablet works really well. And, like the Pixel phone line, the fact that the tablet will get updates directly from Google faster than other Android tablets, only increases its overall attractiveness.

Extremely Attractive Hybrid Smartwatch
on June 6, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
The Citizen CZ Hybrid Smartwatch is a hybrid smartwatch that blends the appearance of a traditional watch with the functionality of a modern smartwatch.

To start, inside the box you’ll find the watch itself along with a charging puck and a couple of pieces of documentation. The charging puck employs a standard USB-A end and makes a physical connection via small pins to the back of the watch; there is no wireless charging. Surprisingly, the charging puck is actually the exact same one that fits my Fossil smart watches.

The watch features a large metal body with a silicone band and is exceedingly attractive. It has a solid, quality, weighty feel to it, while not being cumbersome. The front glass/crystal is a mineral crystal, similar to other traditional watches, making it extremely durable. The side navigation buttons have a good bit of resistance to them, helping to avoid unintended interactions. The band, while being soft silicone does have surprisingly sharp-ish edges on the inside that sit against your arm. They’re not so sharp as to actually cut you, but I do regularly notice their presence. Also, the band does not offer an easy method to swap it. There are no quick release pins on the inside; you have to actually physically compress the band enough to expose the retainer pins, then compress them.

The screen, positioned behind the physical arms, is e-ink, similar to e-readers. This means that the screen is only black and white and uses a backlight for viewing in dark situations (double-tap the face to activate). The trade-off here is that the battery life is great. So far, the battery has on average lost only about 5-10% per day.

Setup of the watch is fairly quick and easy via the Citizen Connected app. The app itself is pretty simple and easy to navigate. It allows for customization of the watch for things like changing the watch face or the functions of the side buttons. The app also manages the connection to Google Fit to keep your fitness information synced. Generally, the app has been stable, but there have been a couple instances where swiping the Citizen Connected app away would kill the connection between the watch and the phone forcing me to open the app again and then close it.

Navigating the menus on the watch itself involves using the side buttons to make selections with the physical watch hands pointing to your options. While this works, navigating through menus on the watch can be slow at times; sometimes the watch hands will move a few seconds before the screen catches up to show the selection and sometimes the screen will change quicker than the watch hands will move.

The watch’s sensor package allows for activity and biometric tracking, such as sleep tracking, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and step tracking. Activities such as workouts or sleep will often be detected automatically and will sync your data via the Citizen Connected app to Google Fit. Step tracking proved to be a little over zealous in my experience; after sleeping with the watch the first night, I amassed about 100 steps.

Similar to many other Wear OS 3 watches, there is no Google Assistant available. Instead, Amazon’s Alexa is present. Personally, I don’t use any of the assistants on my smart watches so this didn’t affect me one way or the other.

The biggest trade-off for the hybrid nature of the watch is that it is a bit limited in its onboard menus/functions. For instance, during media playback, you can increase/decrease volume on the phone or pause and skip a song, but there is no way to step back a track. Similarly limited is the notification list; you can view notifications and scroll through them, but can't get rid of notifications or reply to messages.

At the end of the day, the Citizen CZ Hybrid Smartwatch is an extremely handsome watch that provides excellent battery life and expanded, helpful functionality over a traditional watch with some limitations. Tempering your expectations of what it can and can’t do out of the gate will make or break your overall experience.

Great Upgrade
on May 28, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
I installed the Crucial Pro 32GB Kit (2x16GB) DDR4-3200 UDIMM CL22 (8Gbit/16Gbit) in my Asus S500TD Performance Desktop to upgrade it from its out-of-the-box 8GB of RAM.

The 2 memory modules installed easily by first removing the old RAM. Then line up the center gap on the new DIMMs and press in the lower side until you hear an audible click. Then press in the upper side. Finally secure the retainer clip. After that, using an open-source stand-alone memory tester called Memtest86+, I tested the new memory. Both tested at 100%, without issue.

The desktop that I upgraded is primarily serving as a streaming media server using Plex. It also runs software for remote access called TeamViewer and Powerchute for controlling shutdowns in the event of a power loss. Overall the unit starts quicker and now has extra capacity that allows it to serve multiple media streams effortlessly.

I am very happy with the Crucial Pro 32GB kit. And currently priced at only $70, I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs to give their desktop a bump in performance.

Reliable UPS
on May 5, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the APC BN1050M you’ll find the UPS, an Ethernet-to-USB communication cable, and some documentation. The UPS itself has a very small footprint (3.5” x 12”), a plastic exterior, and a 6’ permanently-attached power cable with a flat plug. Basic setup includes connecting the internal battery, removing the sticker covering the outlets on the back of the UPS, plugging the UPS into wall power, and plugging your devices into the UPS.

The front of the UPS features the screen and 3 buttons. The screen is bright and features good iconography, making it easy to understand. On the downside, the display itself is set well behind the face of the UPS making it difficult to read from any angle other than head-on. The buttons are physical and illuminated, which is nice.

The back of the UPS features 8 outlets, a network communications port and a reset for the integrated circuit breaker. Regarding the outlets, there are 4 on battery backup and 4 surge protected. The outlets are positioned horizontally, which should reduce interference with other plugs, however they appear a bit crowded side-to-side and could potentially interfere when using larger power adapters.

In my testing, the unit switched over instantly when wall power was lost, providing a seamless experience. Operation is quiet. The estimated On-Battery time on the display was fairly accurate and the unit provides ample time to cover brief power outage and/or shut down the devices properly.

APC’s software, PowerChute, can be downloaded from their website. It provides a web-based interface, via the communications cable, to manage the UPS and provide automated shutdown options for the PC. While not necessary for using the UPS, it does provide beneficial data and options.

Overall, I’m very happy with the APC BN1050M and am glad to have it powering and protecting my media server.

Marvel of Engineering
on April 9, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the Robosen Optimus Prime Elite you’ll find the robot (stored in Alt-mode), accessories (the Ion Blaster, Energon Battle Axe and removable exhaust stacks), the AC charger, a Micro USB cable, documentation, and stickers. All of this comes in a very nice foam-plastic travel/storage case with locks and a carrying handle.
Once removed from the box, there is very little involved in getting going for the first time. There are a few protective plastic strips to remove. Then press fit the exhaust stacks into holes on the back of the cab. From there you can power on Optimus and start calling out voice commands.
The robot is stunning in both robot and alt (truck) mode. Robosen has done a fantastic job of capturing the G1 aesthetic. The overall fit and finish are superb. And the inclusion of the original voice actor, Peter Cullen, for the multitude of vocalizations is the icing on the Cybertronian cake.
Transformations take about 10 seconds to complete. Actions such as striking a ‘Hero Pose’ are startlingly quick and technically impressive. Walking is a bit slow but no less impressive. Driving in Alt-mode is speedy but requires lots of space due to the wide turning radius.
Using voice to give commands is quick and has proven accurate. The app (tested on a Pixel 6) is easy to navigate and has been very stable. The app offers a lot of settings and provides an easy way to download and install new actions. The "Play Guitar" action is pretty funny.
I do have just a couple of critiques. The use of micro-USB and barrel connector (for the charger) seems really dated. Also, when powered down, the robot has no rigidity; he's like a rag doll. This might be intentional for protecting the dozens of complex joints and gears and motors, but it means displaying him in robot mode will require some kind of stand that doesn't seem to commercially exist yet.

These quibbles aside, the Robosen Optimus Prime Elite will make a fantastic addition to any Transformer fan’s collection. It really is a marvel of engineering that blows everyone away that sees it.

Great Gaming Monitor
on January 13, 2023
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the Sony INZONE M3 you’ll find the monitor and stand unassembled, a 4ft power cord with sizable AC power supply, a 6ft DisplayPort cord, and miscellaneous documentation.
The monitor and stand are easy to assemble, though not toolless (requires a Phillips head screwdriver, not included). Once assembled, the monitor and stand have a unique, attractive solid-feeling design that allows for plenty of adjustment (vertical height and tilt back) with a minimal footprint that offers usable space under the monitor.
The face of the monitor features an anti-glare finish and minimal bezel. On the back, you’ll find the physical power button and On-Screen Display (OSD) navigation rocker as well as an array of ports (2x HDMI 2.1, 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 3x USB-A, 1x USB-B, 1x USB-C).
Tested with an Alienware gaming laptop, games felt great to play with the 240hz enabled. There was no noticeable latency and no tearing. With the HDR enabled, colors were vibrant and there was more than enough brightness available.
The onboard speakers are fairly disappointing. The sound is tinny and offers little stereo separation.
The OSD menu settings are easy to navigate and include various gaming assist options like on-screen crosshairs, timers, a frame rate counter, variable refresh rate, response time options, and black equalizer.
At the end of the day, apart from the speakers, the Sony INZONE M3 monitor is a great gaming monitor that will not disappoint.

Competent Home/Office Desktop
on December 14, 2022
Posted by: Beuge
Unboxing the Asus S500TD Performance Desktop you’ll find the tower itself, a wired mouse and keyboard, a corded wifi antenna, power cord, and documentation.
The case of the tower is a standard ATX case featuring a steel chassis with painted matte black finish and plastic front. The case does not feature tooless access or drive mounting. The mouse and keyboard are standard office-grade pieces that suffice. The power cord is 6’ in length.
On the front of the tower you’ll find a conveniently located power button, two SS USB 3.2 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, headphone and microphone jacks, and a memory card reader. On the back are two more SS USB 3.2 ports, two more USB 2.0 ports, a gig speed ethernet RJ45 port, PS2 ports for mouse and keyboard, one HDMI port, one DisplayPort, one VGA, the standard array of audio jacks, and connectors for a remote wifi antenna (on a movable expansion plate)..
Inside you’ll find available expansion space for the addition of one 5.25” accessory (i.e. optical drive) and two 3.5” drives. There is a 300W LiteOn PSU which features 4 available P8 connectors for additional drives but no available connector for a devoted graphics card.
The motherboard features one available PCIeX16 and two PCIeX1 slots. In my unit, one of the PCIe slots was blocked by the plate for the wifi antenna connections, but the plate could be easily moved in the event of future expansion. There is currently 8GB of DDR4 RAM, spread across two 4GB sticks. The mobo will support a max 32GB of RAM due to only sporting 2 slots total. This is also an Intel 670P 512GB m.2 NVMe SSD as the lone storage device, integrated Intel UHD 730 graphics and an Intel AX201NGW wireless card which features dual band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
With these specs, the machine is primarily targeted for home/general purpose/office use. And from that perspective, it functions great. Startup of Windows 11 is consistently quick thanks to the SSD and minimal pre-installed bloat (primarily ASUS configuration and diagnostic software). Apps open quickly, internet browsing was fast, and video streaming up to 4K resolution was stutter free.
Knowing that the kids (or grandkids) are still going to try to game on it, I tested a few games as well. Popular "light" choices like Minecraft or Roblox perform satisfactorily. Minecraft at 1080p produced 60fps and at 4k would dip to 40fps. Roblox varied depending on the game selection. Most selections performed fine at 1080p, but at 4k a few games dipped to 5-15fps. More intensive games, such as Rocket League really struggle; 4k was basically unplayable while 1080p yielded a better 30-50fps, but still noticeably struggled.

is this keyboard and mouse compatible with an HP laptop?

Yes, the combo is compatible with an HP laptop; both with the included dongle as well as using Bluetooth.

I am currently using it simultaneously with an Elitebook (dongle) and an Envy X360 (Bluetooth) and all is working well.
