Compact outdoor smoker oven - great pizza!
on September 21, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
This is definitely an outdoor only oven. It gets extremely hot, inside and out, and puts out an incredible amount of smoke and/or steam when cooking.
The first thing we tried was pizza. The pizzas came out very good. The perfect fitting pizza stone was included. The bottom of the pie was nicely browned and the inside of the crust was yielding while the crust itself was firm and crisp and not chewy or “mouth-pain causing” hard crust. We are such beginners with homemade pizza crust though, and mine was too thick for my liking (I jokingly called my leftovers “calzone”). We were going for thin crust, but we used store-bought pizza dough and just couldn’t manipulate it thin enough. We will try again after making our own dough from scratch. The oven put a very nice sear on the edges of the crust, the meat (and my wife’s pineapples) and on the cheese. Once we nail down our thickness of dough I’m sure this will cook perfect pizza. One note – it takes about 20 minutes to heat up to pizza temps (550-700). So add that to your prep planning. Once at heat it cooks pizza in just 3-5 mins depending on the type you are going for (Thin vs. NY style, etc.)
We also made beef short ribs and mostly used the recipe from the booklet. I’m glad there are a few recipes provided, but I would like way more detail and some photos of what the steps are and how things should look while cooking also. Maybe if you already know how to use a pellet smoker or outdoor pizza oven, your learning curve won’t be as steep as ours. One odd thing we ran into with the recipe - you can set multiple stages for foods that need varying temperatures. Like for the short ribs, on Stage 1, you put pellets in the smoker at 700 first and smoke up the ribs and turn them constantly, then you have a Stage 2 setting that is 325 degrees and for 3.5 hours. This is where it’s strange - the recipe said to put stage 2 at 325 degrees for 3.5 hours, but the timer dial would only go to 3.0 hours. We waited until it went down to 2.5 then put 30 minutes back on. Maybe the oven knew better than the recipe. They were very charred; a little TOO many burnt ends, so maybe it should have been 30 minutes less after all. Also, the steps for the short ribs were not super descriptive and there’s one instruction like “pour wine in the pan and deglaze” - I get it, but the pan is literally 700 degrees. Should I carry it inside? Deglaze INSIDE the oven? And when I pour red wine on a 700 degree metal surface, it instantly evaporates! So we could’ve used more detail in the instructions. I will do my own research and find some good tutorials online. The short ribs were a LOT of effort and tasted good, but not great. Probably will get better with some more experimentation.
Be sure to invest in 2 things:
1. A SERIOUS pair of oven/grill gloves with long arm gauntlets and individual fingers that can handle 800+ degrees for more than a few seconds. We set one of those old-school, silver, quilted-style oven mittens on fire just removing the pan from 700 degrees. I have a pair of those Kevlar and silicone gloves, and I can feel VERY HIGH heat in just a few seconds at 700; especially thru the cracks of the silicone strips. Very dangerous to underestimate how hot this gets.
2. Very sturdy tongs. They don’t need to be super long, in fact, I would not recommend super long as they are more unwieldy to do some delicate things like flip over individual short ribs in the back of the oven pan. They just need to have really good grip and not be floppy. Same with any other utensils you use in there. Plastic will melt instantly so be mindful.
We've only used the pellet part once so for the short ribs, but it’s very easy to add pellets at any time if you want a deeper, smokier flavor and they definitely worked with the short ribs.
It gets really, really hot so be sure your grill or oven mitts can handle it. And be sure your deck or patio is very level. Some meats have a lot of oil and if it starts to spill over just because of a little slope, that could be bad.
Definitely also recommend getting the cover and the stand (sold separately). It’s an outdoor oven, but there are electronics, so I wouldn’t feel good leaving it in the rain without a cover.
Looking forward to exploring more dishes with this.

Great little noise canceling rugged ear buds!
on September 14, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
First off these sound excellent to me. I put them through their paces with all kinds of music types and enjoyed them across the music spectrum. The Jabra Sound+ app gives you lots of options with preset EQ options including customizing and saving your own. There’s also a Dolby Spatial Sound option. Music-wise honestly I like how they sound out of the gate.
It handled multipoint pairing better than any other buds I’ve tried. Works perfectly every time and pairs with my phone and tablet simultaneously. Super helpful for me when traveling as I’m usually listening to music on the phone and then switch to movies/TV on the plane. Just pause one and hit play on the other.
Speaking of traveling – the noise cancelation is excellent. Really blocks out cabin noise and speech/other passengers, etc.
They are comfortable to wear on long flights and while getting in your workouts/runs. Battery is good for all day (rated for 8 hours). Charging is USB C.
They are waterproof, but I probably wouldn’t use in water sports/activities. I’d be too worried they’d come out if you fell on the SUP (stand up paddle board). Bluetooth doesn’t work underwater, so not made for swimming. But good to know if you did get them fully submersed they can withstand it.
Calls were clear and the others I asked on how I sounded said I was clear and fine, but not as good as my larger headset with a boom mic.
Buttons are intuitive and easy to use to tap for various functions and they auto stop including turning off ANC and when you pull one out of your ear (good for when they come to give you the safety briefing in Exit row on a plane, etc.)
They come with multiple ear size tips. The standard ones fit my ears perfectly. They have a nice small in ear profile. Overall, very pleased with these.

Needs work
on September 10, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
First off, I assumed this would work with AppleTV since it has the logo on the box (see picture), but AppleTV is not yet supported. “Coming soon with no estimated release date” was what I got from tech support. It does work on iPhones and iPads, but there is no corresponding app for the AppleTV.
I was able to get it to work on my iPad, but the video was choppy on multiple local channels. These channels are very clear high definition via my powered outdoor antenna when just plugged into my TV over the antenna. So there are some issues either in the hardware or software. It also let me mirror my iPad to the TV over the AppleTV, but it is only like 3/4" the size of my TV screen.
On the positive side, setup was very easy including adding a hard drive for local channel DVR.
As for the DVR though the choppiness in the video caused a recording to start stop quite a few times. I recorded a single 2 hour show and it ended up being 7 different recordings.
Your results may vary I guess depending on your hardware that you connect it to. Check out the official list of supported devices on the website before you try it in your situation.

Bring heat to your Hypervolt!
on September 10, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
Great heated massager head and a nice addition to the Hypervolt attachments.
It was easy to install. You add/remove it just like the regular Hypervolt attachments. It is USB C charging and comes with a cable (no charger, just cable FYI which is pretty common these days).
It heats up pretty fast. On the highest setting it got up to over 100 degrees in under a minute and got to about 115 degrees in about 90 seconds.
When using the heated attachment on bare skin I preferred the low heat (1) setting. The top heat setting (3) was good for me using the Hypervolt on a muscle over a layer of clothing.
It gets hot (122 degrees at level 3 according to the manual), so recommend always turning it off when done using. If you leave it on it probably won't damage anything surface wise unless you left it with the heated head down (that would be an odd way to put it away). If you forget to shut it off though it does turn itself off as well after 15 mins.
Manual says it lasts for about 90 mins of heat before needing recharging. There's a battery indicator that lights up when you turn it on, so it's obvious when you need to recharge.

Quiet and sleek portable keyboard and mouse
on September 10, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
Paired quickly via Bluetooth to both my laptop and my tablet. Also comes with a USB dongle that instantly connects as well.
This could be very handy while traveling especially if on a modern plane that let’s you put your tablet in the holder up at eye level on the seat. This keyboard mouse combo will easily fit on a plane tray table.
Both the keyboard and mouse are very quiet. They both run on double AA’s and are projected to last 2-3 years, so shouldn’t have to replace them often.
The mouse has a flat form factor that takes a little bit to get used to, but makes it ideal for travel.
Easily switch from using with 3 devices (I connected laptop, phone, and tablet). You just select the device you want to type/mouse on. Note that you’ll need to select the corresponding device (1,2,3) on both the keyboard (F1, F2, F3) and cycle through 1-2-3 on the mouse on a button on the bottom.
Mouse has an off switch to prevent battery draining from clicks while backed in your bag. The lid on the mouse is magnetic and easily pops off for storage of the USB dongle.
The mouse works well on phone and tablet and gives you a little gray circle to see where you are tracking/clicking. There’s also some nice prebuilt shortcuts on the keyboard that have using a phone/tablet in mind, like a voice button, screen grab button, emoji button, etc.
Very minimalist, but well thought out.

Good running belt for a large phone
on July 31, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
This running belt holds larger phones easily. I have a iPhone 13 Pro and the main phone pocket has room to spare so could definitely handle a larger phone. It holds the phone well and the belt is comfortable during runs. It has elastic on one side of the belt to let it flex a bit and it stayed put once I got the belt tension set.
It has 3 pockets: 1 large zipper pocket for your phone and then 2 smaller ones that are ideal size for money, credit card, or hotel room key and 1 of the small pockets also has a clip for keys. Note that the smaller pockets don't have a zipper, but still held things fine.
The zipper strap is highly reflective if you’re running in the early morning or evening it should help keep you visible to cars.
I’ve run a few miles in 90+ degree heat and my phone didn’t get sweaty inside the belt pocket, so it’s definitely water and sweat resistant. It's mostly nylon and it folds up nice and small to fit in one of my running shoes when traveling. All in all pleased with this belt and it meets my needs.

Great looking adjustable stands for Sonos Era 300s
on July 1, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
These are nice looking speaker stands and look purpose made for the Sonos speakers.
The base is quite heavy and sturdy and holds the speaker well. That said, I have the Sonos Era 300’s (which are pretty heavy themselves). I have these as surround speakers beside my couch and they are very close to a hallway, so I’m just a little worried about them getting knocked over. Probably not an issue if where you are placing them isn't near a walkway.
They were easy to setup and literally only took about 10-15 mins to set up the pair. They have both pointy nubs or rubber feet to use for either carpet or hard flooring. The stands hide the speaker cable well down the groove in the back.
Speaker height adjustment is easy and I didn’t experience any issues like some other reviews, so I believe this is the 2nd generation of these that have that issue solved.
Given its slim profile, just make sure you place these where they won’t get easily bumped by kids or pets. I think these are probably an excellent fit for the Era 100’s which would be less top heavy. These do come with brackets for both the Sonos Era 100’s and Era 300’s so you can use them for either.

Coffee house coffee at Home!
on May 19, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
Installation was easy. Literally just remove some tape and then walk through the initial start up process. I found their 7 min video online on how to install and use super helpful in walking you through it. There are a lot of options, but their overview is well thought out including the water hardness testing and initial setup.
In a nutshell it brews (great) espresso, coffee, and cappuccino as well as hot water - but let’s face it we’re here for the coffee! The auto grind works well and auto dispenses into the hopper, it is a little loud, but not too bad. You can set your strength and size (3 levels of each) and also set your heat preference as a setup option. Both the coffee and espresso taste excellent and having “coffee house coffee” at home is great!
I like the option to add pre-ground coffee if you want something one off different like a milder or flavored blend / decaf etc. The frother steam arm is very easy to remove and clean.
They also have an option to add an “aqua clean filter” that you install into the water chamber that supposedly lets you brew like 5000 cups without descaling – it is sold separately, but I’m definitely going to add that to keep maintenance down.
It tells you if it’s out of water, need to empty the grinds, etc. The brew unit is behind a door behind the water chamber, but it is easy to pull out and pretty easy to clean.
Overall the unit is compact for all that it does and it fits well on our counter and looks great as an appliance. It’s not inexpensive, but I’m happy to move away from a pod machine (felt wasteful) and should also save money in the long run not buying pods and less trips to the coffee house!

Nice midsize microwave. Fast for popcorn!
on May 9, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
Very easy to set up just put the glass tray in pull off the protective film on the front and plug it in and you’re ready to go. Clock was also super easy and intuitive to set.
Works like you would expect and has some additional features that I wasn’t expecting. You can actually change the power level mid cycle which is a nice plus and something I appreciate if you feel like it’s getting too hot (like you hear food popping or sizzling or if you don’t hear that) you know you can drop it down or increase it up on the fly.
Like most microwaves, you can’t use the timer and cooking at the same time - it’s one or the other. It has a nice clean lines / stainless aesthetic look to it and feels pretty sturdy opening and closing the door. The beep is a little bit loud and not alterable, but you'll know when it's done if you're in another room.
It also has multistage cooking, which allows you to set two different cook levels for two different time frames like defrost and then cook with one cooking setup.
Has both a 30 second quick hit (just hit start) and also has 1-6 min one touch start as well.
Cooking works well and easily heats up a drink, reheats a dinner plate, popcorn was actually quicker than I’m used to (only 1 min 40 secs!) and cooked a potato pretty well with the potato button. I needed to add 1 min to the potato, but think it’s basing it on an average potato and I might have been cooking a slightly larger potato.
Overall pleased with this mid size microwave.

Next step up from Sonos Play – missing Google Asst
on March 27, 2023
Posted by: ShawnInKB
This speaker sounds great. It was super easy to setup and add to my Sonos app. Took literally just a minute or 2 to add. I have other Sonos speakers so already had the app downloaded, but adding it is a breeze.
What’s great is after you name the room you have it in and setting the bass and treble to your liking in the app - you are ready to rock, literally. Bluetooth connectivity was a snap and the Sonos app easily lets you push your music all over the house to this and other Sonos speakers flawlessly and in sync.
I tried all kinds of music and whether it’s bass heavy rap, rock, alt, dance, acoustic, jazz, classical, etc. they all sounded great and it’s a significant sound improvement over the Sonos One.
It’s a bit bigger (maybe twice the width) of the Sonos One but has a much more spatial and a “full” sound to it.
One note on placement - I tried it on a kitchen island and the bass was a little underwhelming. Then I moved it to near a wall to let the rear of the speaker have something to bounce / reflect off of and that's the bass magic. So recommend setting or mounting near a wall or corner for it to really reflect off of.
So far 2 cons for me:
1) There is no option for Google assistant. We’re a Google house and this only supports Alexa and its own Sonos voice control. That said – I can tell my Google Homes and Sonos One’s via their Google assistant to play music to this speaker.
2) The other is I’ll have to upgrade my Sonos home theater Playbar with the new Sonos Arc to take advantage of the 7.1 Dolby Atmos that this speaker can pump out.
If you are just setting up your home theater and going with the Arc, you’ll be happy with these as your Atmos surround.
If you just want this as a great sounding spatial speaker in a room it really fills it up on its own.

Best fitting case / issue with power button crack
By ShawnInKB from Pottstown, PA
Overall a great case as long as it holds up! 1st one got a crack at the power button within 2 weeks. The plastic there is just too small/not sturdy enough and I barely used it. You almost never even use the power button because it automatically comes on and off when you open and close the case. Lots of others had this same problem. On my 2nd one - 2 weeks in (so far so good, but being really gentle with it just in case.)
Otherwise a great case. Good viewing angle, great form factor, super light so it doesn't bulk up your iPad air. Keyboard takes some getting used to and keys are in weird places, but much better for typing than the on screen keyboard. Nice slim package, lets you type better, easy access to the camera, power, and charging port. Good viewing angle. Note the only slimmer full case was the OEM Appple iPad full case which I tried 1st, but it was worthless. The only viewing angles on that one were basically flat and 90 degrees so not usuable at all. Go with this one instead and careful with the area of plastic by the power button.
2nd one cracked also at the power button!!!
February 11, 2014
A few days after I wrote this review, the 2nd case broke in the exact same spot at the power button. Again, never even used the power button as it isn't needed. Serious design flaw. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Wemo WiFi Smart Outdoor Plug gives you total smart control over your lights, holiday decorations and other outdoor devices. Featuring two splash-proof and weather-resistant outlets, you can set schedules and control two devices together from anywhere by using the app or your voice with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, or Hey Google.* It’s perfect for the patio, yard or other spaces where you’d like to manage electric outlets. You can also use Away Mode to randomly turn porch or landscape lights on and off when you’re not home. Sync lights connected to the Smart Outdoor Plug with the sunset and you’ll walk out to a backyard that’s ready for evening activities.

I actually have 3 questions. Is this device gfi protected? Can I control each outlet separately? I’ve yet to see a straight answer on that question What are the current and temperature ratings for the device?

No it is not GFCI, but most places require outdoor outlets to be on a GFCI in that circuit so should be covered by your GFCI outlets. No, it turns both plugs on/off simultaneously. Not sure on it's temperature rating. Didn't see any details on that in the manual.- only that it is IP44 rated.

Meet Talk GO, JLab’s compact, lightweight, and portable USB microphone. With 2 studio-quality condensers and a generous resolution of 96kHz/24BIT, this is a great entry level microphone for all around use with high performance. The Talk GO has 2 directional pattern modes to choose from and has volume and mute controls, making it great for calls, podcasts, gaming, ASMR and voiceovers using its two directional pattern modes.

Does it use an aux cord

It is USB connection only for connecting to your PC/Mac. There is a 3.5 aux jack on the bottom of the mic for connecting a 3.5mm headset for listening if desired. Instead I just use the output of my PC speakers to hear others on my meetings/web calls.

Cut The Cord with AirTV Player. Stream movies, TV, music and other content using a wide range of apps, including Netflix, SlingTV, Google Play and many more from the Google Play Store all with AirTV Player. AirTV’s streaming platform integrates local over-the-air (OTA) programming with your streaming services. The AirTV Adapter and an OTA antenna provide local channels like ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX, without a monthly cable bill.

I’m confused. How/ where does it get ota channels? Is there an antenna that comes with it? Similar to the digital antenna I use now for local channels? Or does it get the local ota channels and stream to device via the internet?

If you have an OTA antenna already you will be all set. Just unscrew the OTA coax cable from your TV and connect it to the OTA AirTV adapter (included with this item.) Then it will show the locals right in the AirTV/SlingTV same guide.

Apartment use. Currently have a TimeWarner modem router and an extender in living room. parts of living room are slow and gaps. will these replace the modem router and will range be better?

I would say yes. Our speeds tripled in the areas of our home that were slower (3rd floor and basement) from 20-27mbps to 63mbps.

I have a house built in 1930 and it is 1000 sq. ft. up and 1000 sq. ft. basement. I have 2 wifi extenders because of the solid brick and plaster walls to pick up better signal in dead areas. I currently have a Netgear 55 router. Would this work better?

I would say yes based on my results. Before I installed the Orbi I ran 5 separate speed tests on my laptop in various parts of our home. (3 story house - 2700 sq. ft).

I ran tests from each floor on my existing router (TP Link WR1043ND - a 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router). Speeds averaged 43.76Mbps down and 4.35Mbps upload.

After I installed the Orbi, I re-ran the same speed tests in the same locations and speeds now average 62.83Mbps down and 5.80Mbps upload. Significantly faster!

The 2 spots in the house - top floor and basement both went from 28.56Mbps and 21.72 to 64.33 and 63.46 - so much better coverage and the Orbi's base + satellite coverage now provides equal coverage thoughout the entire home.
