The Definitive Laserdance Collection
on September 5, 2016

Laserdance produced melodic, space-themed electro throughout the 80s and early 90s. The genre is known as "Italo Disco" or "Space Synth" and received very little attention stateside, but I'm glad I rediscovered it recently–and this collection is the perfect way to own the best of what they've done.
All of their mainstay hits are included: Disc 1 consists of radio/album versions of their most well-known songs (Power Run, Future Generation, Enemy On Earth, ect.), and Disc 2 is mostly rare club versions/remixes. Each disc is packed full (Disc 2 clocks in at a hefty 82 minutes!) so you get plenty of bang for your buck here. Note that there aren't any songs from the Ambiente album on here, but that was a concept album which featured a more laid-back tempo and never produced any "radio" hits.
If you consider yourself an electronic music aficionado, owning this collection is a no-brainer. Also check out Koto, Proxyon, and Rygar for more by Michiel van der Kuy, the key member behind this project.

Let's Doom again, like we did last decade

It's kind of hard to tell where in the timeline Doom (2016) takes place. At first it appears to be a remake of the original game story-wise, but then it incorporates some elements from later entries. Whatever the case, all you need to know is that this new Doom lives up to its legacy: It's fast-paced first-person-shooter action where you blast demons to pieces on Mars.
This time however, there's a melee combat system where you can finish the enemies off in a gruesome spectacle (think God Of War or Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2). This adds a fresh element to the gameplay that was just what the series needed; not only are they fun to watch, but there are multiple ways to take out each enemy (depending on which angle you approach them from). With certain traits applied, you can earn yourself a steady stream of health, ammo, and speed from these melee kills.
The only drawback here is that the action may be a little TOO frantic. Most enemy encounters happen in a locked room where you have to take on 10-20 foes at once. There's still plenty of exploration, no doubt–secrets are hidden around every corner–it's just that the gameplay flow seems a tad stilted with enemy encounters being so condensed.
It takes some getting used to, but I think long-time Doom fans will find plenty to like with this one. It's not quite as dark and "creepy" as Doom 3, but the crazy action of the original Doom 1-2 is on full display here–albeit updated in a modernized way.

Another CGI-infused, mythological popcorn-fest

The trailer makes this movie look more grandiose than it is. While the run-time is a little longer than your typical brainless CGI B-movie, you wouldn't be wrong to lump "Gods Of Egypt" in with the average crop of forgettable, pre-summer filler. The effects are ok, but the real problem here is the manic pacing of the movie, occasionally corny dialogue, and the fact that most of the "gods" don't look Egyptian (aside from their ability to transform into their usual depictions). Ok, so "Gods Of Egypt" is meant for the non-thinkers...but as long as you don't take it too seriousIy there is some enjoyment to be had. However, there's still a nagging feeling it could've been a lot better if more passion was put into the project.

Not a total bomb, but it's pretty ho-hum

Yet another franchise that probably should've been left alone. This 2015 remake of Poltergeist just doesn't deliver the scares or feeling of sinister dread the original had. Maybe it's the CGI, maybe it's the fact that we've seen this all before–but whatever the case, this one just falls short. However, there are worse ghost movies out there...so if you're curious, don't hesitate to pick this one up if you find it on the cheap. It's fun to compare it to the original at least.

Mediocre No. 9

I'm kind of on the fence with this one. Touted as a spiritual successor to Mega Man and backed by $4 million of Kickstarter cash, Mighty No. 9 should have been an inspiring success story of how one developer went rogue (Keiji Inafune) and delivered what the fans wanted against all odds. Somewhere along the line, something went wrong.
After facing numerous delays, Mighty No. 9 is finally here...and while it does disappoint in some ways, it also delivers. Let me explain: What you get here IS very much in the spirit of Mega Man. The characters are slightly different...but the 8 robot bosses, stealing their powers, and run-and-gun platforming gameplay are all intact--plus a couple of minor twists. The most noticeable difference is that Beck (the main character you play as) can dash into enemies to deal the final blow and absorb their power. You're encouraged to prime enemies with your main blaster or other powers, then quickly dash into them for temporary buffs and point bonuses. Love it or hate it, this gives the gameplay a frantic pace not found in Mega Man games. It's worth mentioning that there are a couple of frustrating sections in this game--mainly in the form of instant-death traps (thankfully, checkpoints and extra lives are plentiful).
Graphically, Mighty No. 9 is disappointing...even for a lower-priced game. The backrounds are almost lifeless, the character models barely move during the story scenes, and some effects are underwhelming (yes, the explosions do look kind of like pizza). This is the area in which the game feels the most unfinished. In addition, framerate issues are present here and there. While nothing major (at least in the PS4 version), given the simple graphics it's inexcusable in this day and age.
The music and sound effects of Mighty No. 9 are sufficient and communicate the game's intended retro theme. The airy, techno-y tunes are superb and very reminiscent of past Mega Man games, and the voice acting is serviceable (corny, but endearing at the same time).
When the dust settles, what you're left with in Mighty No. 9 is a short-but-sweet platformer which lacks the graphical punch and charm to elevate it above average status. This IS a letdown...but it's still an enjoyable game. It's a dose of old-school goodness that could've used some more coordination, but I still encourage you to give it a go...even if it doesn't quite live up to its legacy.

Not terrible, but it's no Comalies

I hate to sound cliched, but in this case it really is true...their old stuff is better. So yeah, Lacuna Coil has been floundering around with this pop-rock sound for about a decade–and I won't lie, I do like SOME of it–but for the most part it's forgettable. The same goes with their latest outing, "Delirium." I much prefer the slower, more brooding style of "Unleashed Memories" and "Comalies"...but hey, what can you do? If you're looking for some female-fronted rock, you could do worse than this band (but you could also do better).

Well-produced and cleverly-themed electro

I'm not sure how to describe Ashbury Heights. I suppose it's synthpop with a gothic flavor. Whatever the genre, "The Looking Glass Society" is Ashbury Height's best effort yet. Clever synth compositions give this album a unique Victorian-era vibe, and the male / female vocals top it off nicely. It's an acquired taste to be sure, but one I'm proud to say is unlike anything else. Definitely give this one a try if you like anything from the goth/electro genres.

Yanni with an R&B vibe. Some old, some new.

If you like new age/chill music, you know what to expect from Yanni. In recent years he's been incorporating lots of vocals in the mix–and this album is no exception. "Sensuous Chill" accurately describes what you get here: laid back lounge music with a hint of R&B flavor. What's here is superb...however, there are a few repeated tracks from 2011's "Truth Of Touch" album. There's also a couple of songs like "Drive" that are compositions from Yanni's early albums, but they're remade here with a new twist so it's ok. Ultimately, I'd give it 4/5 stars (would've been a 5/5 with a couple more new tracks instead of the filler).

Then, explore the city of Wulfburg in The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs, as you discover a Nazi archaeologist obsessively unearthing ancient and powerful artifacts. A mediocre supplement to The New Order
on June 18, 2016

As a supplement to Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Old Blood is decent content if you simply want more of that formula, sans the multiplayer. However, the story isn't as fleshed-out here and takes a backseat to the action. A couple of new weapons are implemented, but nothing game-changing. The campaign is only about half as long as The New Order's (roughly 6-8 hours), descending into a zombie apocalypse scenario near the end. That's fine, but I would have liked for it to have been further explored with different zombie types, other than just waves of plodding soldiers (perhaps a survival mode via Call Of Duty would have been cool). You probably won't come back to The Old Blood after you've beaten it–save for doing a few of the challenges for trophies. For the average FPS fan, this is a take-it or leave-it affair. 3/5 stars from me.

Overrated and vulgar, but that's Deadpool for ya

As many have said before, Deadpool is pretty much THE superhero Ryan Reynolds was born to play. His humor and quips sync with Deadpool's perfectly, and this movie is spot-on as a result. Unfortunately, the villain is kind of forgettable...and by the time they get the ball rolling, the movie's over. I suppose that's ok, as this movie serves as a springboard for the Deadpool character proper, and we're very likely to see a sequel in the near future. I ultimately enjoyed this one, but I can't in good conscience give it more than a 3/5 rating due to the immature, vulgar frat-boy humor throughout. But hey, that's what Deadpool is about, right? To each their own.
