A More Mature God Of War
on June 25, 2018

It's been about 8 years since a mainline God Of War game (God Of War 3 on PS3, 2010), and it appears the hiatus has done the series some good. With this latest entry, entitled simply "God Of War", the story takes a step in a more mature direction–showing Kratos in a fatherly role, regretting his violent past and the repercussions it entailed. With the Greek gods vanquished, Kratos now reluctantly sets his sights upon the pantheon of Norse mythology.
The perspective has shifted into an over-the-shoulder view, which makes for slower, albeit more visceral combat. For a good portion of the game, you'll be using a frost axe instead of Kratos' signature Chains Of Olympus. Throughout your journey, you'll be accompanied by Kratos' son, Atreus...but he's much more of a boon than a hinderance; rarely will he need to be babysat. Instead, he has no life bar and acts mostly to assist in stunning enemies with his bow attacks (although he will quickly become more lethal). Your weapons AND armor can be upgraded as well, which is a new feature to the God Of War franchise. In fact, your armor and attachments greatly influence your stats; different builds may be needed to take on the more difficult foes.
The graphics are quite nice on either the standard or pro PS4, though only the latter is capable of 4k and a consistent clip of 60 fps. Still, it's totally playable on the standard PS4 at a respectable 30 fps. If there's one gripe I have, it's that you really don't feel like much is accomplished story-wise by the end of the game–it's clearly a setup for a new trilogy. That said, I'd welcome a couple more entries into the God Of War series using this new perspective and gameplay style. Definitely recommended for action aficionados!

Overall better than the made-for-TV version

I liked this one. I haven't read the book, but I have seen the made-for-TV "IT" with Tim Curry, and I think this version does it justice. While Tim Curry did a better job of being a more subtly disturbing demonic clown, the guy here does decent job. The most important thing you need to know is, by the time the credits roll, it's only half the story....leaving things wide-open for a sequel. But you know what, that's ok. Cutting it into two pieces will allow them to find quality actors to play the grown-up versions of the kids once they return to fight "IT" again. We shall see.

An Ok revival of the Saw series

Jigsaw is an attempt to invigorate the Saw series, and for the most part it succeeds. The problem is, we've seen 7 Saw movies now...and even with the hiatus, this one is predictable. There will be blood–lots of blood, and the traps and devices are clever. If you want more Saw, this one is...acceptable.

Grand idea, mediocre execution

Valerian tries hard to be the next Fifth Element. It's basically a fast-paced sci-fi comedy with a lot of CG...nothing we haven't seen before in this day and age. I found it moderately enjoyable, but it doesn't really stand out as exceptional either. The characters and plot are fine, it just doesn't inject anything new to the formula and much of the dialogue / jokes seem forced. If you like Fifth Element, Star Wars, and Star Trek, you'll appreciate Valerian on a creative level as I did–just don't expect to be blown away.

Play your favorite video games with this PlayStation 4 DualShock controller. The microUSB port lets you keep it charged and ready to use, and the trigger buttons and controls deliver immediate response on even the most challenging games. This PlayStation 4 DualShock controller has an internal speaker for realistic close-up sound.

An improvement over the PS3 Dual Shock
on March 25, 2018

I've had some consistent troubles with Sony's hardware in the past (I'm looking at you, PS1 and PS2), but their controllers have rarely done me wrong. The PS4 Dual Shock continues that trend with its excellent button layout ergonomic design. The biggest improvement here to me is the analog sticks–they're wider apart and feel much better with their concave grips. They also feel more sturdy and reliable than the PS2 and PS3 sticks.
The buttons of the Dual Shock 4 are a similar affair. The new touch-sensitive track pad in the middle is ok, but it's rarely used for anything these days other than just an extra button (at least in 3rd party games). The L2 and R2 shoulder buttons are now triggers like on the Xbox One controller and feel much more natural for use in first-person shooters. The d-pad is excellent and still my favorite for fighting games out of all the standard console controllers. There's also a headphone jack on the bottom if you opt not to go with a USB headset.
Battery life is pretty much as stated–a respectable 10-15 hours. Charging is easy, as each controller has an internal battery and can be charged via USB without interrupting usage (another plus over the Xbox One controller).

NOTE: Dual Shock 4s that are sold separately DO NOT include another USB charging cord, so be ready to invest in another one if you plan on doing a lot of couch co-op games.

D-Pad is lacking, but otherwise great

Console controllers have made great strides over the years in functionality, and I'm pleased to say the Xbox One S controller is the apex of that so far for Microsoft. Most notably, it has a headphone jack built into the bottom of the controller (so you won't need the chat adapter for that function anymore). Other than that, this is pretty much the same superb Xbox One controller you know.
The analog sticks feel sturdy and have yet to fail on me during demanding first person shooter play (something that was a plague for me during the PS2 and original Xbox era). The buttons don't feel cheap and haven't stuck on me yet, which is also a good thing.
However, I've found the D-pad has always left something to be desired on Xbox controllers–it's just not precise enough for arcade fighting games. So, I'd recommend an arcade stick over this controller if you plan on seriously playing any fighters.
I've found the charging function and battery life with the play-n-charge kit inconsistent (although this could be due to me using a headset with the controller that drains it quicker). It sure would be nice if Microsoft would finally take a page from Sony and put internal batteries in these things...having to buy a separate battery and cord seems excessive given that it's the same price as Sony's standard Dual Shock 4. Still, the S controller is a respectable 1st-party peripheral and meets most of my needs nicely for the system.

If you liked the first Annabelle movie and the Conjuring series that spawned it, this is kind of an obligatory watch. "Annabelle: Creation" is an origin story for the titular evil doll, and it explains everything well enough...but it plods along slowly and one can see the scares coming from a mile away. The acting is fine, but I somehow felt the setting and plot were ho-hum; you won't see anything here that hasn't been done before, but if you're looking for yet another evil doll movie you could do worse.

Not the reboot you were looking for

This newest movie in The Mummy franchise is a bit weak. It's trying to kick start a new cinematic universe for the Universal monsters--this being the first assumed of many--but falls flat due to lack of direction. This is not the fault of Tom Cruise and company (I really like Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll), it just tries too hard to be fast-paced and take the series in a new direction while connecting itself with the other monster franchises (think Justice League or Avengers but with, well...monsters). Oh well, here's hoping the inevitable sequel can make amends somewhat.

There's really not much to be said about "The Ring" that wasn't covered in the first movie, so it's not surprise that its 2005 sequel and this one are kind of floundering. It covers all the bases, but just doesn't deliver a genuine horror movie experience that I've come to expect from quality films in the genre.
No matter what happens, Samara won't stop killing and the film must live on via copies, ect. No real revelation is touched upon in this movie to make it a must-see. However, if what you want is simply another entry in the black-haired water-logged girl horror genre, you should probably consider "Rings." You know what to expect here.

A graphical update, but not much else

"Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition" is essentially the first Gears Of War game that was released on Xbox 360 back in 2006–except with updated graphics and a few campaign segments that were only in the PC version at the time. That's pretty much it. Everything else is stuck in 2006...I really wish they updated the gameplay mechanics to that of Gears Of War 4 standards (and perhaps included a horde mode).
However, if you want to revisit the first Gears' game this is the definitive way to do it. The frame-rate and graphical detail is much better than the 360 port currently offered on Xbox Live...and at the bargain price it's hard to pass up. It's just a shame they didn't remaster the whole trilogy ala the "Halo: The Master Chief Collection."
