Another gem in the Star Wars franchise

I must admit, I had my doubts about Disney acquiring the rights to Star Wars...but my fears have been laid to rest with The Force Awakens and Rogue One.
Rogue One takes place between the events of Episode 3 and 4; it elaborates on how the Rebellion got ahold of the schematics to the Death Star. You won't see many faces from the original trilogy–this isn't their story–but Dark Vader makes a couple of appearances and is voiced yet again by James Earl Jones. A sequence toward the end with Vader is particularly impressive and is easily one of the film's highlights.
I think it's safe to say Disney did their homework and got this one right, what more can I say? A definite buy in my book.

Has a few glitches, but an enjoyable shooter

In Ghost Recon: Wildlands, you assume the role of a spec ops team seeking to rid Bolivia from a drug cartel known as Santa Blanca. It's a 3rd person, over-the-shoulder view sandbox game that borrows many elements from Grand Theft Auto, but with a spec ops theme–think of it that way. You can choose a male or female persona for your special operative, and there's a serviceable amount of appearance customization.
In solo play, you'll be joined by 3 AI controlled allies which you can command (they don't always follow orders directly, but they're generally helpful). But the real fun begins when you play with up to 3 friends, which I highly recommend. Dropping in and out of each other's campaigns is simple and swift, as you'll get credit for whatever you do regardless of your own current progress.
The only real hiccup is the bevy of glitches that, as of the time of this review, can get pretty annoying. I've encountered the cover system failing, sound glitches, vehicles that explode for no reason, as well as the drone randomly ceasing to function. Most of these glitches require you to log out to the title screen and back in to fix, so they can hinder the experience.
Still, I recommend this one for any fan of open-world 3rd person shooters. There's plenty to do and it's great fun with friends, so hopefully the glitches will be ironed-out and will be less of an issue in the future.

A clever spin for a monster movie sequel
on March 14, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
First off, yes...this is a sequel to Cloverfield. And yes, there is a creature element to it...but perhaps not what you'd expect. Most of the movie focuses around a woman getting captured by a survivalist (Goodman) and trying to escape from his underground bunker with one other captive. Towards the end, its ties to Cloverfield are revealed...sort of.
SPOILER ALERT: There are no kaiju in this movie. In fact, 10 Cloverfield Lane's connection to the first movie is solely the town in which it takes place and the fact that there's a monster/sci-fi element to it. There are no giant monsters that collate to the creature in the first Cloverfield movie–or so we're led to believe. You only get to see the "aliens" in the last 10 minutes of the movie, and it leaves you wanting more.
However, I can't really think of another sci-fi movie like 10 Cloverfield Lane. As a suspense/thriller movie, it excels...so try not to think of it as purely sci-fi fare and you may like it. It boldly combines two different genres, and I admire that.

An original take on the alien invasion genre.

Arrival has no ties to "The Arrival" from the 90s–let's get that out of the way. This is still a movie about aliens, but it puts an original spin on the genre that makes it stand out. As mysterious ships arrive on the Earth, the protagonists have to figure out what they want and how to communicate with them. Ultimately, this movie is a drama that just happens to have aliens in it...don't expect much action or violence (there's even some supernatural elements pertaining to psychic abilities). Rather, Arrival is a commentary about humanity's nature and how we might react if faced with a benevolent extraterrestrial presence.
In that regard, Arrival is a lot like the original "The Day The Earth Stood Still." If you don't mind a more cerebral spin on the typical sci-fi flick, give this one a look.

RE7 takes the series back to its roots.

Resident Evil 7 is a departure from the last couple of Resident Evil games: it's less action-oriented and more along the lines of the survival horror genre which the series helped pioneer in the 90s. The gameplay view is first-person now, but that helps add to the engrossing experience (especially in VR).
The pace is a lot slower than RE5 and 6, but the horror atmosphere and gratuitous gore is on full display. You'll spend the first hour of the game frantically running from the game's antagonists, but you'll quickly amass a cache of firearms to dispose of them (pistols, shotguns, a submachine gun–even a flamethrower and grenade launcher). Ammo and inventory is limited, but you're never too far away from a save point or storage box, so you shouldn't feel too constricted. Switching between weapons and using healing items couldn't be easier–simply assign the 4 directions on the d-pad for your weapons and press R1 to use first aid.
One area in which the game suffers a bit is from the lack of enemy variety. Shortly after the first "boss", you'll frequently encounter tarry, rotten creatures dubbed "the molded." They're terrifying enough, but you don't see too many other enemies in the game other than those–outside of a few mutant insects.
Resident Evil 7 successfully reinvigorates the series without sacrificing its identity. The only real drawback is the lack of extra content after you finish the main game...all of that must be bought via DLC (but it used to be the kind of thing that was included after you beat the game). Still, you can't go wrong with RE7 if you're in the mood for some genuine survival horror.

Marred by DRM policies, but otherwise worth it

"Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition" includes all content from seasons 1-3: including all of the released characters, stages, and the original Killer Instinct arcade games from the 90's. It even comes with a soundtrack sampler CD (I say sampler because there are a lot more tracks in the game that what's on the CD). It does NOT, however, include some content that's been released recently, such as Kilgore.
For those new to the series, this is a one-on-one, 2-D perspective fighting game similar to Street Fighter...except there's a heavy emphasis on combos. Indeed, the combo-counts get crazy in this game...but thankfully once you get used to the system they're relatively easy to pull off. Many characters that had projectiles in the past have had their zoning potential nerfed in favor of rush-down strategies (which I guess is ok, since the game is about getting up close and personal for combos). This is indeed the Killer Instinct we all know and love from the past, with updated mechanics that make sense and stunning modern graphics.
The model for releasing this game in chunks from the beginning has made some aspects feel jilted, though. Season 1 character stories seem lazy, while Season 2 sees its new characters getting a better treatment. However, Season 3 characters don't seem to have any story at all (unless it's coming later). Like Street Fighter 5, I feel the whole DRM fiasco has really messed this game up, as it seems to have trouble identifying which assets you own (as indicated by random crashes which send you back to the dashboard, and some versus screen character black-outs).
Overall, "Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition" is definitely worth the price for what you get–there's no better time to try it out if you've been waiting. Just be aware that there are a few hiccups and hurdles that keep it from being a truly smooth experience.

Lacks the novelty of the original, but it's ok

The plot makes sense: Following the invasion of 20 years ago, humanity has salvaged and taken advantage of alien technology–fully integrating it into their society. But now the aliens have returned–bigger and badder than before–and it's up to Jeff Goldblum and company to yet again find a way to repel the invasion.
The problem with "Independence Day: Resurgence" is that, well...we pretty much know what to expect. Since 1996, we've seen many movies like this, and lets face it–this is a sequel long overdue (if there even needed to be a sequel). Just like in the original, this is a disaster movie with sci-fi icing...in other words, it's mostly about the human drama. It's PG-13, there's a lot of hokey dialogue, forced relationships in a futile attempt to make us "feel" something, and in the middle of it all there's...aliens. It also hurts that Will Smith is absent from this one...they got all of the core cast to return except him–it's really a shame he couldn't have been there; it would have added more credibility to the production.
Nevertheless, there are a few cool elements present here. The introduction of a huge "queen" alien is cool–if a little unoriginal–and this movie carries the core story in a direction that makes sense for the franchise. It might all be starting to get a little Starship Trooper-ish, but taking the fight to the aliens themselves next time makes sense. Let's hope they can keep it together if they do proceed with another sequel.

A shallow, but action-packed CGI-fest for the kids

Somehow I still want the new TMNT to rival the current round of Marvel and DC super-hero movies out there–but alas, not this time. "Out Of The Shadows" doesn't make any efforts to be more cerebral than its predecessor; instead, it focuses on the same manic energy and simplistic dialogue...but we do get to see a few more characters such as Casey Jones, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang.
For some reason they felt the need to make Casey Jones a member of the police force in this incarnation, and we still see Megan Fox get overly sexualized as usual (hey, I'm not complaining–it's just kind of immature). What more can I say, I suppose...it's meant for kids and tweens. Due to its hyperactive plot, "Out Of The Shadows" leaves something to be desired by the end. 2/5 stars.

There's a few discrepancies between the original animated movie and this one, but it's nothing to complain about. 90% of this movie was filmed on a green screen, as you'd expect...the CG is serviceable. Overall, this one should be a crowd-pleaser for kids and adults alike.

A collection of rarities from the Imagica years
on September 5, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
In their early years, The Birthday Massacre were known by the name Imagica; the tracks on this album were produced during that period. Even though some of these songs have appeared on their main albums before, these particular recordings have never been published before.
Imagica is a raw-sounding record, but that's a good thing! You get to hear what The Birthday Massacre were experimenting with before they solidified their style, and it's great fun to rediscover these. There's also two excellent cover songs which you may not have heard before: "Open Your Heart" by Madonna, and "From Out Of Nowhere" by Faith No More.
My only gripe is that there are a couple more tracks from their early days that are mysteriously absent: "Never-ending Story" and "The Knight Murders" would've made welcome additions to complete the package and could've easily fit on this CD. Even so, Imagica is still a cool love letter to fans and definitely a must-have.
