I always loved a good monster movie. But when I saw they were doing this, I wasn't interested. The only reason this film exists is because the studio greenlit Godzilla vs King Kong and didn't realize the size disparity between the two combatants. They rushed Skull Island so they could ultimately get back to the main event. However, I enjoyed this film more that I ever expected. Unlike the 2014 Godzilla, Kong spends a great deal of time on the screen. They weren't shy at all about putting the big guy front and center! There is plenty of eye candy and beautiful vistas (it was shot partly in Hawaii). It has the framework of the Kong films that came before, but with some subtle tweaks. There is no abducting the pretty girl in this one, for example. Overlook the gaping plot hole when they first reach the island (bombs away and not one scientist objects?!?), and enjoy the ride. The steelbook itself is a version of the teaser poster and looks nice. And it is available in a 4K version - score!

This F&F franchise is all about adrenaline and maybe a little character development. This film has all the prerequisites for the film series in spades. It may not be the hoot that Fast Five was (is?), but is a cool popcorn extravaganza. How do you up the ante with each film? The problem is, bigger and louder reaches critical mass. This is a fun ride, no doubt, but where does it go from here? Whatever, I'll be there. The steelbook itself is rocking and has a 4K disc included! Score!

These Star Trek reboots have been a tough sell for me (a die hard Trekker), but I figure some Trek is better than no Trek. I admit the first film is still not a favorite of mine, but Into Darkness (horrid title) is quite a fun romp! It should be as it is based on The Wrath Of Khan, one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever. As someone who has seen every film and TV episode of anything Trek, some of the updated characters are barely tolerable, but I see what they are trying to accomplish. The film is beautiful in every way and the 4K presentation brings it to life. If you are not a Trek fan (you are missing out), this might be the film to bring you over.

The film has quite the following, me included. Bring on Chapter 3! The steelbook is gorgeous and NovaMedia uses its artwork on their premium release. If you are a fan, picking up this edition is a no brainer. I just wish the 4K version was included, as Best Buy has done before.

I wanted more for this film. It is Superman, an iconic character in pop culture (not just comic books). It is dark (very un-Superman), but also deals with the darkness of (near) absolute power. Something to think about. The toughest character to base a film upon is probably Superman so it is little wonder that movie studios (with their endless meddling) have such a hard time getting it right. In many ways it is just a rehash of Superman 2 from the original series of films. That is not a bad thing, since it pits Superman against real threatening foes (something rarely accomplished). Another edit or two would not have hurt since the film is too long. The disc is beautiful in its audio and video presentation. I wish more films were available in 4K, but maybe the future will change that.

This film is loud and jumbled and dark. But there is fun to be had. The extended version builds character arcs that are missing in the theatrical version. This added footage strengthens the case for these two heroes to clash. Let's face it, these characters would not agree on much of anything, despite the Superfriends series from the 70s. The more I see this film, the better I like it. It will never be Spider-Man 2, The Avengers, or The Dark Knight Trilogy. But its reputation is worse than it deserves. With the release of the Wonder Woman feature film, it will be observed that her scenes are perhaps among the best of this film. I believe that is justified. The title is to sell tickets, Dawn Of Justice is a better stand alone title. Shoehorning the Death Of Superman story and the Dark Knight Returns together has definite mixed results, but as a starting point for the Big 3, it is not as bad as critics will say.

If you were to watch 2 films, John Wick and Jack Reacher, you might expect the latter to be the breakout film. After all, it has action and Tom Cruise. However, where Jack Reacher (based on the popular book series) emasculates itself for a favorable rating, John Wick goes pedal to the metal, R rating be damned. In 10 years it is doubtful that Jack Reacher will be more than a footnote, and John Wick will be clear fave. I am only comparing these films because they came out the same year, one was highly touted and one was not. I do enjoy the Jack Reacher films on some level, but if I want balls-to-the -wall action, I reach for John Wick. This is Keanu's greatest action film since the original Matrix. It won't have the same seismic cultural shift as that film, but fans of this film know that it will stand the test of time.

The first John Wick is quite the surprise. While I do love sci-fi and superhero films, there is something about a physical and raw film (with some, but less CGI). It was refreshing. The sequel does what every sequel hopes to do. Namely, take what is good and expand upon it. John Wick Chapter 2 does that in spades. You get all the insane action and long cuts (no boring and confusing rapid fire editing here - yep I'm looking at you Bourne) from the original and also a much deeper look into the assassin underworld. It is intriguing to see new characters and "new" rules for the crazy world. Kudos to the entire team for making a leap (much like the Terminator to T2). Bigger and deeper, and I can't wait for chapter 3!
