Great value, amazing screen, so-so battery
on May 14, 2022

This is a very serviceable laptop for the masses. The specs are enough to reliably run most games without going crazy with it, so it will work well for regular web-browsing and document work as well.
The main differentiating factor between this laptop and others is the screen. This is a Pantone Verified screen, which means that it is standardized for the appearance of colors. The colors are more vibrant on this screen than on my HP Spectre laptop (which cost almost twice as much), and definitely look good. This also means that this is a screen that will be good for people doing visual arts, since you know what the image/video will look like on other (Pantone Verified) displays.
Other points worth noting:
- Battery Life: You’ll probably get between 5 and 6 hours of use on a charge. When I tested this, it was with the screen on about 80% brightness streaming videos on YouTube.
- Build Quality: Fantastic. The metal case has a modern design and feels very sturdy and premium.
- Ports: You have 2 Thunderbolt ports (excellent) so you can connect to a docking station and still have another type-C port open for an accessory if needed, 1 regular USB port, 1 HDMI port (also not typically found on slim laptops anymore), and a micro-SD card reader and headphone jack.
Overall – this is a great laptop at a fair price. The only potential limiting factor that I see is the battery life of about 6 hours. If this amount of time isn’t an issue for you, then this laptop is a great option.

Great looking, but only "smart" for a select group
on May 10, 2022
Posted by: MurphyR

This is a beautiful cross between a traditional watch and a smartwatch. If you are looking for something with a traditional look, you’re not going to find anything better than a watch from Withings. Here is a comparison:
Interacting with the watch: The watch sets itself when paired with your phone. While a full smartwatch allows you to see and respond to notifications, this only allows you to see the notification that comes in. You can read a text message as it scrolls across the screen, but you cannot mark it as read or respond to it. Instead you can press the crown to turn on the smart options, and roll it to select the option you want. This is how you get to the functions of checking your ECG, blood oxygenation, etc.
Activity Tracking: Be aware of what you are tracking! If you are doing a lot of walking, this will do a good job of tracking steps and active time. If you are walking on a treadmill and have your hands on the rails (or on a keyboard while working), this watch will register nothing. When I was walking while working, I racked up over 4,000 steps without the watch registering any activity. Otherwise, it seems good.
Sleep Tracking: This is where the watch seems to be most lacking, largely due to one issue with the software. When you wake up during the night, it thinks you just woke up for the day. This means that if you wake up and are up for a couple of hours before falling back to sleep, it will not capture this second bout of sleeping. Similarly, I’ve even had it stop recording sleep when I even briefly wake up. I only know this because I also have an Oura ring to track activity and sleep. When the ring registered my being awake momentarily, the watch thought I was up for the day. The ring registered almost 8 hours of sleep, the watch only registered 2 hours.
All-in-all: If you want a traditional looking watch with some smart functions, this is probably the best way to go. It looks just like a traditional watch. If you want a reliable activity tracker, this is probably not what you are looking for (see above). It you are looking to track sleep, this is definitely not what you are looking for. I really see this as being ideal for someone who has concerns about their heart rate and blood oxygenation, and everything else seems to be tacked on as an afterthought.

I don't know about 4k, but it is versatile
on February 4, 2022

This is a handy little streaming device. You can connect any other device that you want to it wirelessly to stream to the TV screen.
I've found a few nice uses for this. First, you can display your phone screen on your TV, which is great for sharing photos (something you cannot really do with a usual streaming device). Second, you can connect it wirelessly to a computer to use the screen as an additional monitor - my current computer set-up includes a docking station which connects to two monitors, but if I want to connect a third, I can use this and I don't have to worry about not having another physical connection on the dock. Third, if you are traveling, this can connect to your device without being connected to the internet, so you can use this in hotels to stream to the TV without having to log in to an unfamiliar device on your own account (assuming the hotel TV has smart features for Netflix, etc.).
The only gripe that I have, which may be more with my own devices than this, is that I wasn't able to stream at 4k resolution. I was able to do 1080p, and it looked reasonable. Not quite as good as a wired connection at 1080p, but it was good enough.

Definitely a vehicle and not a toy!
on February 4, 2022

Age:35-44

The first point to be aware of with this scooter is that it is a VEHICLE, not a TOY. There are a lot of warnings to indicate this, just in case you have any confusion. The manual in the box is fairly long, and all but about 2 pages are warnings of what not to do with it.
That being said, it is fun to ride. This was my first time using an electric scooter (though they always looked fun) and it only took about 10 minutes or so to really be comfortable on it. I just rode it around my parking lot for a while until I was confident enough to actually make a trip. This first trip was to a car repair shop, because my car wasn’t starting…
The total trip was about 6 miles, and when I arrived there was still about 1/3 of the battery remaining, so I’d estimate I would be able to get about 9 miles based on how I was using it. I’m about 180 lbs. fully dressed, and I’d describe the terrain more as rolling than flat. I was also on the “regular” setting rather than the eco or sport.
Assembly is fairly easy as all you have to do is connect the handle bars, though I will say that it took a fair amount of torque to get those screws to go in. Suffice to say, once you have the handlebars screwed into place, they aren’t coming out again. Otherwise, everything was all set up, and even the tires were adequately inflated.
Usage is simple. You push off so that you are above 1 MPH, and then you can hit the accelerator with your right thumb (you cannot start the electric motor from a complete stop). If you are just going straight, a “cruise control” will come on after about 5 seconds or so. In the regular mode this keeps you going between 10 and 12 MPH. I imagine eco mode will be a little slower and sport mode a little faster, though I haven’t been able to test this out yet (constant rain/snow). To disengage the cruise control, you just squeeze the brake with your left hand until you feel it disengage. I highly recommend getting used to doing this before using the scooter in any crowded areas or near traffic, as it does take some getting used to.
Overall, this is a really nice scooter for running quick errands, or as a “last mile” vehicle from public transit. It’s a bit heavy to really carry around, but works very nicely and I’m very glad that I had it when my car broke down.

Best in-ear headphones I've tried
on January 7, 2022
Posted by: MurphyR
from Fairfax, VA
Overall, these are the best in-ear headphones I’ve ever used. Here’s why:
Staying on – I’ve tried a lot of in-ear headphones, and these stay in the ear better than any other pair that I’ve ever used. They are lighter weight, and more secure, so I have no trouble walking/jogging outside wearing these. As a bonus, with staying in the ear better, the ANC works better as well. This isn’t amazing ANC like you get with high-end over-ear headphones, but it is good for tiny, in-ear headphones.
Sound Quality – It’s good. You rarely find headphones with what I would consider bad sound at this point, but these have good audio quality. No issues.
Connection – The Bluetooth connection could not be easier. As soon as I opened the case for the first time, I was prompted to connect them to my phone. I didn’t even need to go into the Bluetooth settings to manually make the connection. Also, I’ve never had the connection flicker or falter in any way. Even when using power tools or a microwave, no issues.
Battery life – This may be slightly overstated. I never got 10 hours at one time, but then I was never able to wear them for a full 10 hours straight. They stay in the ear, but they might become uncomfortable after a while. The longest that I used them was about 6 hours before I was prompted to a low battery. This was enough that my ears were too sore to use them the following day.
Controls – These do have touch-controls on the earbuds. I don’t recall what 1, 2, or 3 taps do off the top of my head, but they worked when I used them. I still ended up reaching for my phone more than ever tapping the earbuds.
Overall – Excellent earbuds, and if you can get them on sale, definitely go for it. I’m not sure I’d pay the full $200 retail, but around $150 or so you’ll likely find them to be the best in the price range.

Cheap feel, but good sound
on December 1, 2021
Posted by: MurphyR
from Fairfax, VA
My first impressions of these headphones were not that great… The box is thin, the case feels like cheap plastic, as do the headphones themselves, and the added earpieces are in unmarked little envelopes rather than affixed to the packaging in any way. Everything about these headphones screams lower quality than expected.
Audio – these have quite good sound. I’ve tested a lot of headphones, and the sound is well rounded here. I’ve had more expensive headphones with much worse sound, so it does not disappoint in this area.
Touch Controls – Not terribly usable. You can tap once to increase/decrease volume (depending on the ear), twice to play/pause/answer/hang up, and three times to skip forward or back. In practice, you can usually only adjust the volume. Most of the times that I tried to skip forward, it ended up just raising the volume 3 notches. Almost unusable, at least not reliably so.
Feel – These feel pretty good in the ear. Most in-ear headphones will randomly fall out of my ears, but these fit well enough and are light enough that this was never a problem, even on longer walks outside.
Battery – Seems to be about as advertised.
Noise Cancelling – I have to assume that “environmental noise cancelling” just means that it naturally blocks out sound by fitting into the ear. This is fine. Don’t expect active noise cancelling.
Overall – Inexpensive feel, but nice sounding headphones. The touch controls aren’t very usable, but they do stay in well.

Nice charger with a couple of minor limits
on December 1, 2021
Posted by: MurphyR
from Fairfax, VA
This is a great size charger with the ability to recharge your device several times over, whether it is a phone or a tablet. However, this does come with a couple of shortfalls.
Size and Speed - This is a sizable battery pack at 6.5" x 3". However, the charging speed is not quick-charging. So, if you want to get a full charge, you're looking at 4+ hours (as it was for my Pixel 4a). This battery also stops charging the device when it is full.
Results - So, this means that you're carrying around this sizable battery for hours at a time, or you're using it to charge over night. This is fine if you're camping and just need the charge, but with taking about 4 hours to charge and stopping charging when the device is full, your phone will charge for the first half of the night and discharge for the second half, leaving you with a less-than-fully-charged phone in the morning.
It's a great device if you need to charge in one place for a while, or if you're fine with leaving your phone for a while (or are carrying a large purse/backpack). Probably not the best to charge with overnight or use with something requiring constant power (as I tried with a motion-sensor LED strip).

Still good software, about the same as previously
on November 17, 2021
Posted by: MurphyR
from Fairfax, VA
I've updated my video editing software from Premiere Elements 15 to the 2022 software. Ultimately, I don't think there is much of a difference.
One main difference that I've noticed is that 15 has started to get very finicky as to what video files it will accept. The standard is .mp4, but it has often started rejecting these files from my camera. There is free software to change the format which gets around this issue.
In 2022, there doesn't seem to be that finicky issue, as I've had no issues bringing in video files. This is certainly simpler.
I don't see a lot of actual functionality changes between the two softwares, however. I was able to do everything I needed in the Quick editing mode in 15, but the Quick mode in 2022 is far less functional. I mean extremely basic things like trimming off the start or end of a clip cannot be done in the Quick mode in 2022, but rather you have to be in the Expert mode to even make a cut.
All of the functionality still appears to be there. I'm not seeing much of anything new, despite the years between the software. Options are moved around, but you can still find them fairly easily.
If you need video editing software, this is good and works well. If you already have version 15 or later, I wouldn't feel the need to get this latest version.

Complete marketing hype without delivery
on November 6, 2021
Posted by: MurphyR
from Fairfax, VA
The best word that I can use to describe these headphones is… overstated. Everything in their marketing seems to be promising more than they deliver…
Audio Quality – The dynamic range is more narrow than I’ve experienced with most any headphones recently, particularly at this price point. There is very little bass with these headphones. You can adjust the EQ higher in the app, but it doesn’t make much difference.
Noise Cancelling – I don’t believe there is any. Sure, there is a setting in the app. I’ve stood near a street, near running water, and walked around turning the ANC on and off. It doesn’t make a difference. They say it is adjustable. If you have it on lower settings, it sounds like the headphones are piping white noise in rather than letting sound through. Turn the ANC to the highest settings, and it is no different from having it off completely.
Call Quality – Horrible. You can hear the people on the other end, but it can be hard due to the headphones pumping in white noise on your end. They say it is supposed to be crystal clear, but it definitely is not. The sound for the people on the other end is just as bad. The microphones seem to do a better job of picking up the background noise than your own voice. You are harder to hear than on any other headset I’ve ever used.
Wearing – If you’ve read this far into the review, congratulations. These stay in the ear better than any other headphones I’ve tried. After a few hours, they become uncomfortable to wear, but at least they can stay in, which is better than most in-ear headphones.

Expensive, short, and the app barely works
on October 31, 2021
Posted by: MurphyR
from Fairfax, VA
This is a really overpriced set of LEDs. There are some novel effects that you can achieve if you have a lot of these strands, but that would be an incredible amount of money.
Brightness - not very bright. I'd say that if installed correctly (so you are getting indirect light), this makes about as much light as a children's night-light.
Controls - the app you have to download is terrible. Just about any action you take makes it freeze up/crash. I've been trying to get it to download a firmware update, but that never works (even though you are prompted to do it every time you go into the app).
Interface - This requires WiFi? Why? There is no reason for this to need to connect to WiFi. If it didn't, you could still get updates via bluetooth over your phone. If it didn't, it wouldn't require a massive wall-wart to power it.
Overall, this is a terrible waste of money. Go with a regular strip of LEDs, and you can get far more, with almost as good of color options (though a bit less versatile), that requires less power and costs about 1/10th of the price.
Avoid this pile of ****.

Feel the beat with this LG PK3 portable Bluetooth speaker. It provides dynamic sound and rich bass thanks to its Meridian Audio technology, so you can bring the party with you. The IPX-7 water resistance lets you go anywhere, rain or shine. This LG PK3 portable Bluetooth speaker keeps the music going for up to 12 hours per charge.

I want to use this as a speaker on my TV. Will it work for this purpose if I leave it plugged into a wall outlet for power all the time?

This speaker pairs wtih BlueTooth, or has a standard size line in (1/8 inch, just like any headphone jack). So, if your TV has BlueTooth or a headphone-out jack, it can connect to a TV.

Does each earbud have controls? Can both sides be used independently of each other, or can only one side be used independently, or must they always be used as a pair?

Each side has different controls (volume on left, play/pause on right).

You can connect the right side alone. This may be possible with the left, but I haven't tested it.

These Sony headphones have a battery life of up to 30 hours for extended jam sessions.

What walkman are compatible with these headphones?

If the walkman has bluetooth, you should be able to connect. You can also use a wired connection and still turn on the headphones for noise-cancelling.

Do these have the same cracking head band problem that the Sony HDR1000x had?

I have both headphones, and both have the same metal headband. I don't see how it would crack, but if it's a problem you experienced with the prior version, I don't see it being any different here.

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Can it use the same SSID as my TWC modem?

Yes, in the set-up for the extender, you can tell it to clone the settings from the home network, which, according to the instructions, will copy the SSID.

green light is blinking, curser moves staticly

It sounds like it is having a hard time maintaining the connection to the receiver. Try having the receiver plugged in as close to the mouse as possible (I have a USB hub built in to my keyboard, which works perfectly). When I plug the receiver in to the back of the computer (less than 3 feet away), the connection becomes choppy and the pointer will skip around on the screen quite a bit.
