A great perfect surge protector for sit-stand desk
on June 29, 2023
Posted by: MurphyR
This is a very bulky, but premium seeming surge protector. It is about twice as thick as any other surge protector that I've used in the past, but it is well sculpted and functions well with the rotating plugs.
My Use Case:
I'm using this as a surge protector for my sit-stand desk set-up, and I find that to be an ideal use for it. My set-up is with a docking station and two monitors. Each of these devices tend to have plugs of different sizes and coming off in different directions. This power strip allows for each of these to be turned in the same direction, which is very useful in keeping the cables neat in the little cage under the desk.
It is also the perfect length of cable in itself (about 6') to allow for the desk to go up and down without any issue of the power-cable getting too stretched.
A nice little bonus is the USB plugs. While you're not going to fast-charge any phones or tablets with these (which is why I'm giving 4 stars), it's nice to have the plugs there to charge a few devices while working at my desk without needing to have a separate USB hub plugged in. This has the added bonus of making sure my desk light always has power - it is a USB plug light and having it plugged in to the docking station meant that it would lose power every time that the computer is disconnected, like when I switch from my work laptop to my personal laptop.

Great screen and power for games and video editing
on May 25, 2023
Posted by: MurphyR
This is a nice laptop with enough graphics processing power for video editing and powering multiple 4k monitors, so it's perfect for me!
I do a small amount of gaming (Magic Arena) which didn't always work well on my prior laptop (HP Spectre from 3-4 years ago). There, it would run fine until the battery ran out in a couple of hours, or it would barely be able to power a monitor running over 1080p through a docking station and would constantly refresh, changing monitors, cutting out the audio. With this new Asus laptop, it runs perfectly at the full 4k while also running it's own screen and another 1080p monitor or two at the same time.
The processing power is great for video editing as well, which I also periodically do. It comes with a trial of Adobe, which is what I have been using for several years. My only complaint is that every time they make a revision to the software, even the basic controls change... The least they could do is keep basic things like splitting a video to edit out part... I've needed to revert back to the old laptop just to get things done without relearning everything...
For this laptop, the screen is great, sharp, accurate colors. The power is good for 4k monitors while running games. The speakers are good for a laptop, but you can do much better with just about any speakers that plug in. With something this nice and powerful, get yourself a docking station with some nice peripherals, and enjoy. ;)

Great little PA, but, as with anything, test first
on May 22, 2023
Posted by: MurphyR
This is a great little PA system if you get it for the right purpose and test it before hand. I regularly host trivia nights in a bar that is about 2,800 sqft with 100+ people talking and drinking. This is not quite up to that task as the space is too large and the other people too noisy to overpower with this small of a speaker. However, if the space were smaller or the people quieter (like in a coffee shop rather than a sports bar).
The controls for the PA are very simple and minimalistic. Each channel is controlled by a single knob which you press to switch between volume, treble, bass, and reverb. If you hold the button for a few seconds, there are other more technical specs that you can adjust.
In my personal experience, as this was not strong enough to use exclusively for my hosting responsibilities, I tried to run it as a second speaker with a line taking the signal from the main PA. THIS WAS A BIG MISTAKE. For some reason, running a line from another PA into the input on this results in immediate feedback if the volume is above about 25% on either system. However, if you plug the microphone into this Sony PA and run a line to another system, no feedback and everything works. I have no explanation for this other than to say, test your system for the purpose you need before expecting to take it out in public.

Simple and straight-forward, old-school player.
on April 17, 2023
Posted by: MurphyR
In a world of smart devices where every device is trying to do everything, this is a remarkably simple blueray player. All you have to do is plug it in with an HDMI cable capable of handling a 4k signal, and you're good to go. There is an ethernet port on the back, which I initially connected, but there were no updates and there are no features requiring the connection, so it has since been disconnected and the blueray player is now behind my TV which is mounted on the wall.
As the player is behind my TV, I don't have a line-of-sight to it for the remote, but I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that line-of-sight is not required for the remote to work. Now, I don't have to have the player where it is always visible, but I can still control it with the remote without contorting myself into odd positions to get the remote to where it can see the player.
Everything is as simple as can be. You connect it to power and to an HDMI cable, put in a disc and play it. No smart features, nothing to set up, just simple and easy.

Not great bass, but very clear for calls
on January 23, 2023
Posted by: MurphyR
This is my first pair of bone conduction headphones, and I'm fairly impressed! I was expecting the bass response to not be very good, and I was not surprised. However, this is a novel listening experience that may be worth trying out.
Clarity - The audio clarity is actually quite good. I wasn't sure how it would compare between regular headphones and bone conduction, but I would say that the audio is comparable to earbuds. That is to say, it's acceptable, but nothing amazing.
Comfort - It may take a little while to get used to, but these are comfortable to wear for hours on end. I was using these for phone calls and talked on the phone for more than three hours without having the slightest discomfort. When you turn the volume up higher than 50% or so, you will start to feel vibrations in your face, and the volume seems to level off a little. As I said, this is a unique feeling, but something that you get used to fairly quickly.
Communications - I checked with a few people that I spoke with on the phone, and they said that I actually came through more clearly than I even did when using the microphone built in to the cell phone, so that is definitely a plus.
Limitations - I don't think these would be good in a noisy environment. The volume does not go as high as most headphones, so what you're listening to may get drown out by loud environments, or even strong winds. There is also not a lot of bass clarity, so these are going to be better for podcasts and phone calls.

The Nextbase 320XR and Rear Window Camera is the ideal solution for all-around protection on the roads in full HD quality. The front cam captures every detail in 1080p full HD at 30fps, with the aid of a 140° wide viewing angle. It utilizes the latest 2.5" screen with IPS technology for easy menu selection and playback. The 320XR uses the exclusive Click&Go PRO mount with integrated neodymium magnetic power connectors for easy installation and removal using just one hand. The 320XR Rear Window Camera connects to your front facing Dash Cam via a supplied 6.5m cable. It fits directly to your rear window with an easy to install self-adhesive pad. The magnetic, adjustable fixture means that it's suitable for angled windows in cars or more vertical van windows. The Rear Window Camera records in full 1080p HD with a wide 140 degree viewing angle to guard against everything from hit-and-run impacts to knocks and bumps in a car park. The 320XR also includes Intelligent Parking, which automatically starts recording when motion is detected, keeping your car safe when parked. For this feature, we recommend hardwiring in the Dash Cam using the Nextbase Hardwire Kit. Footage must be played back on a PC/Mac using Mynextbase Player or online using the free MyNextbase Cloud service (minimum requirements: Windows 10/OSX 10.9). The 320XR is not Bluetooth, and will NOT sync directly with the MyNextbase cell phone application.

Nice camera, easy set-up
on December 13, 2022
Posted by: MurphyR
Overall, this is a nice set of cameras for your car. The set-up is simple enough. All you need to do is put in a micro-SD card, the camera will prompt you to format it, connect the rear-view camera, and you're ready to go. The video that is captured is nice.
The only thing that is a bit difficult is routing all of the wires for the cameras. They give you a lot of wire to work with, so that's nice, but there may still be some that you have to keep wound up and hidden somewhere. They provide a tool for shoving the wire under plastic panels and such, but there is only so much that you can do.
One odd aspect is that there are both a mini-USB (you're reading that correctly... mini-USB, not micro, but mini, a standard that was dropped by basically all electronics producers more than a decade ago) and USB-C connections. The back-up camera is supposed to be connected to the USB-C port, and power to the mini-USB. However, it will take power through the USB-C... I'm not sure why this is, but I suppose it's nice to differentiate the ports in some fashion.

Great toothbrush, probably no need to upgrade
on November 20, 2022
Posted by: MurphyR
Overall, this is a great toothbrush from Sonicare, but then I'd say that basically any Sonicare toothbrush is going to be great. I got this as an upgrade from my original Sonicare that I've had for almost 20 years. The old one still works, but became very difficult to travel with because it always needed to be plugged in or the battery would hardly last through a single brushing any more.
This is a great, sleek, modern brush, and the four different brushing modes are nice, though I feel like I'm just going to leave it on the "deep clean" setting. Each setting uses one of two different vibration intensities, or may fluctuate between the two, and have different amounts of time for brushing. The "deep clean" does the higher power for a longer time.
While this can pair with your phone and has an app for tracking your brushing and pressure you're using, I'd say the app is worthless. Hopefully you can remember (or feel) when you've brushed your teeth, and the visual for whether you're pressing too hard is absolutely not needed because this brush will actually dull down the vibration if you push too hard. So, you can actually feel it and react when you need to lighten up.
I'd say that this is a great brush, but if you have any other Sonicare toothbrush, it's probably not worth upgrading unless the old one is dying.

Good for exercise with a few caveats...
on November 13, 2022
Posted by: MurphyR
I think these are good headphones for a very narrow segment of the public.
Battery - The battery life is great, but at some point adding to the battery life is unnecessary. In my use, I'd probably get over 80 hours as they indicate on the box. But I've been using them for more than a week, so at some point running out of battery is a problem of remembering to charge the device, and no amount of additional battery life will fix not remembering to charge something.
Sound - The sound is very good. I'd say it's comparable with headphones in the $100-$150 range. There is no distortion or overemphasized bass, so you get really good sound from these. Is it worth the full retail? Probably not, but the sound quality is nice. The only reason to spend the money on these is if you really want the other features for exercise.
Exercise Features - There is a lot more fabric used in the production of these headphones than I've seen with any others. This has pluses and minuses. On the plus side, they're meant for exercise, so you can take off the earcups and wash them. On the minus side, the fabric is fairly rough so I don't find these to be comfortable for more than an hour or so at a time. If you are running outside and sweating a lot, I'm sure they'll grip well, but just sitting at a desk or in an office, these are not the most comfortable. In my personal experience, they also squeeze pretty snugly. This would be good for exercise, but not if you wear glasses, as the frames will be squeezed into the sides of your head.
App - The app seems to be completely unnecessary. You have to download it to pair the headphones, making it more difficult to pair than most headphones, and there is no other purpose to the app. You aren't adjusting the sound or getting access to other features. It's just another (cr)app program to clutter your phone.
TLDR: Nice sound, but probably not worth it unless you exercise in the sun a lot, never remember to charge your headphones, and need to be able to wash the earcups.

Nice little smart radon detector
on November 4, 2022
Posted by: MurphyR
This is very easy to set up, and comes with everything you could possibly need. It even comes with 3 adhesive strips from 3M so you can mount it on a wall without using any tools if you choose to do so. This can be powered by batteries (6x AA, which it comes with), or a USB-C cable (which it also comes with). According to the paperwork, using the batteries should power it for 3 years, so that's what I'm doing now.
The set-up is fairly simple. Download the Airthings app, use that to connect to it and connect it to the internet, and you're good to go. You can use the app to check the readings for radon levels, humidity, and temperature. If you already have another smart device like a Nest, you really don't need anything other than the radon detection, so having the temperature and humidity is not really important, but it's nice that it's there.
The device takes about a week to start giving you accurate readings while it gets used to the environment. Mine started out saying 0.0 radon for the first day, then up by 0.1 each day for about 5 days before it started to fluctuate at all. Now, it moves between 0.3 and 0.8. They don't provide any guidance, but looking online I see that you should be concerned when readings are 2.0 or greater, and take immediate action if they are 4.0 or greater.
I have had a couple of times when it disconnects from the network, but that didn't last for very long. Otherwise, no issues.

Don’t let the battery of your devices die as you go throughout your day. The Insignia NS-PW3X4AC2W22B 140W 4-Port USB & USB-C Desktop Charger Kit for MacBook Pro 16” and More has a high, 140-watt output to quickly charge your MacBook Pro, smartphone, tablet and more. It has two USB and two USB-C ports so you can connect your cables (not included) and charge up to four devices simultaneously. Its desktop design easily lets you stack up to 4 chargers on top of one another, granting you more charging options. A simple white design pairs well with your other accessories. Keep your desktop devices working as hard as you do with this 4-port charger.

Charge computer, monitors, phone, and tablets...
on September 22, 2022
Posted by: MurphyR
This is a very capable charger. They say it can power a 16" Macbook Pro. I don't have one of those, but I assume it is an accurate statement. I connected my computer along with two portable monitors all to the computer-charging port, as well as two tablets and a cell phone to the other ports. The cell phone still quick-charged and both tablets charged at a normal rate (connected to the 2 12W output ports). This thing will charge whatever you need to charge!
The design is also very nice in that you can plug it directly into a wall (if you don't mind having the charging ports all facing down to the floor), or with a 6-foot AC cable. It is worth noting that there is no ground connection on the plug, so this is not going to work as a surge-protector, so perhaps run it through a surge protector if you want the protection. When connected through the AC plug, you can actually stack multiple of these chargers for more output (if so inclined at $140 per charger....) from a single plug. I think this might be overkill, but I'm sure others will have a different use-case than I do, as I just plan on using this to charge all of my devices when traveling, or perhaps using this as a charger for smaller devices on my desk (my computer is typically connected to a docking station with two larger monitors).

Feel the beat with this LG PK3 portable Bluetooth speaker. It provides dynamic sound and rich bass thanks to its Meridian Audio technology, so you can bring the party with you. The IPX-7 water resistance lets you go anywhere, rain or shine. This LG PK3 portable Bluetooth speaker keeps the music going for up to 12 hours per charge.

I want to use this as a speaker on my TV. Will it work for this purpose if I leave it plugged into a wall outlet for power all the time?

This speaker pairs wtih BlueTooth, or has a standard size line in (1/8 inch, just like any headphone jack). So, if your TV has BlueTooth or a headphone-out jack, it can connect to a TV.

Does each earbud have controls? Can both sides be used independently of each other, or can only one side be used independently, or must they always be used as a pair?

Each side has different controls (volume on left, play/pause on right).

You can connect the right side alone. This may be possible with the left, but I haven't tested it.

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. Can it use the same SSID as my TWC modem?

Yes, in the set-up for the extender, you can tell it to clone the settings from the home network, which, according to the instructions, will copy the SSID.

It sounds like it is having a hard time maintaining the connection to the receiver. Try having the receiver plugged in as close to the mouse as possible (I have a USB hub built in to my keyboard, which works perfectly). When I plug the receiver in to the back of the computer (less than 3 feet away), the connection becomes choppy and the pointer will skip around on the screen quite a bit.
