Nice camera... app, not so nice
on October 5, 2018

I received this camera to test about 3 months ago. However I had tremendous trouble setting it up. I was using a Google Pixel XL running Android 8, and although I was in contact with customer support, I couldn't get the camera to recognize any of my networks. About 2 weeks into that process I was contacted by an engineer who asked if I had another device I could use. I have an older Galaxy S4 running Android 5.1, so I used it and was able to set the camera up without any trouble. However, when I attempted to monitor the camera using the Galaxy S4, the phone basically locked up; I couldn't even restart it, and wound up having to remove the battery. It was explained that the amount of data being sent from the camera was too much for the phone to handle... so I have to monitor the camera with the Pixel XL. I was told at that time that the Guardzilla app was being completely rewritten and that it should be available in 2-3 weeks. The new app was going to fix the setup issue I was having with the Pixel XL as well as fix the data problem that was causing the S4 to basically freeze. That was 2 months ago.
As far as the camera itself goes, it works well, and the fact that you get a 360 degree view using the app is a great selling point. If the camera didn't need the app, this review would be much different, but since the app is required, and it's way too buggy (at least for me), I can't really recommend buying the camera unless you call the company first and have them assure you that your 'device' will work with the app or find out if they've released the 'new and improved' app.

Absolutely incredible

I had heard mixed opinions about robot vacuums from friends of mine, but since I have three indoor cats, when I got the chance to test this Samsung POWERbot R7065, I jumped at it. I've been using it for about 3 weeks and I love it!
Unpacking and set-up were simple; the hardest part was deciding where to place the docking station. I also had some issues with the app; it took a bit for it to find/recognize the vacuum (not sure why). The whole process took about 15 mins, and then I let the bot charge. Once fully charged, I pressed auto-clean on the app and watched as the bot rolled around the house, cleaning as it went. The app allows you view the status of the bot as well as set the cleaning mode and amount of suction power. You can even drive the bot using the app, but the response is not as crisp as the remote. I actually use the remote more than I do the app simply because it's easier to drive the bot if need be. I've been running the bot on quiet mode, which I assume is the lowest amount of suction, and it cleans just fine... it runs for over an hour, cleaning about 1000 sq ft. The pathing is a little suspect at times, and occasionally the bot will decide it wants to stay in one room for longer than usual. For instance, one day it kept going back into the bathroom. It would've probably gotten to the living room eventually, but I wanted it to spend most of it's battery in the living room, so I had to manually drive it and then turn it loose. The bot cleans carpet, tile and hard wood equally well, but it doesn't always play well with all area rugs; stiffer area rugs are fine, but thinner, more pliable area rugs sometimes have their corners flipped up, and then the fun begins. I've never seen it get stuck on an area rug (it is rather adept at escaping tricky situations), but I have seen it spend several minutes trying to figure out what's going on. As a matter of fact, that's one reason I don't have the unit set up for a scheduled cleaning when I'm not at the house; I'm afraid it might get stuck and just waste battery power trying to escape. It's not a huge danger because the machine will turn off it it REALLY gets stuck and an alert gets sent to the app. Once in the kitchen, the bot was cleaning under the bottom of the cabinets near the kickplates and it manged to get wedged between the bottom of the cabinet and standing cushion that's infront of the sink. It shut down and sent an alert to the app... basically yelling for help. I now make sure that cushion is in the middle of the floor to avoid that happening again. Other than those few minor incidents, the bot has been cleaning like a champ. Again, I have 3 cats, so the main 'dirt' for any vacuum in my house is fur, and this bot has had no real problem with that. The only thing I would mention is that hair/fur tends to collect at the 'exhaust point' instead of falling into the collection area of the bin. It doesn't really seem to affect the suction, but I usually dump the collection bin about half-way thru the cleaning just to be sure. It would be great if the collection bin could be redesigned so that a majority of the hair/fur would fall into the bin, but emptying the bin is super easy, so it's not a huge problem. Also, I should mention that the bot doesn't really pay any attention to the boundary marker. I've tried placing it in several different places and it usually just rolls over it like it's not even there. I'll probably call support when I have time, but it's not that big of deal for me right now.
Overall, I'm very impressed with this vacuum. The lower level of my house looks MUCH cleaner, which I must admit surprises me. I honestly didn't think a robot vacuum would deal with fur as well as this one has. This thing has GREATLY reduced the amount of time we spend vacuuming.... it's a true work horse. I would recommend this vacuum to anyone looking to cut down on the time they spend cleaning their floors.

Good... could be better
on June 15, 2018
Posted by: Chuck

I've been using these earbuds/headphones for about 3 weeks and although they're good, there are several things that could be better.
Right out of the box, the headphones look and feel well built, although they are a bit larger than I thought they would be. The storage/charging box is relatively small, sleek, and holds the headphones firmly in place.
Again, the headphones aren't as small as I thought they'd be; they're not huge, but they're far from inconspicuous. That said, they stay in my ears well, and there's no wire to snag or rub my neck. However, after a few hours, they start to get uncomfortable. I did try wearing these under a pair of over-the-ear muffs when I was mowing but their size made it too painful right off the bat, which is a huge disappointment since I do alot of yardwork. The sound is good, but it's not great. One contributing factor to the less than expected sound quality is that the eartips don't isolate outside noise very well. I've tried all of the included eartips, and none of them really do a good job for my ears. I might buy some double eartips and see if that helps. Also, occasionally, if I'm walking around and the phone/device is stationary, the sound will cut out in one of the headphones for a split second. I'm not sure what causes this, but if you and your device are stationary or moving together, it probably won't be a problem. One final issue with the sound is that when you take a call, sound only comes through the left headphone, which takes a bit of getting used to.
Overall, these headphones provide a good total wireless experience, but with some small improvements they could be much better. Since I can't give these 3.5 stars, I'm going to give them 4 because they're definitely not a 3.

A mop, vacuum, and carpet cleaner all in one
on May 7, 2018
Posted by: Chuck
from DC
I have three indoor cats, so I'm constantly looking for the 'next best' tool to help me clean up after them since my house has carpet, tile, hardwood, marble, and area rugs. This Bissell multi-surface cleaner is great; it's basically a vacuum, mop, and carpet cleaner all in one. The product is fairly light weight and maneuverable so it's easy to use. Assembly is quick, and after checking the manual (or watching a few videos), you should be cleaning in no time.

The machine really does a great job of cleaning every floor in my house. The hardwood, tile and marble look freshly mopped after each use, and the carpets are hair free. Occasionally one of the cats will eat too fast and throw up, most of the time on carpet. Before getting this product, the process was to remove the majority of the vomit with a paper towel, then spray the area with a spot cleaner, scrub it with a cloth or sponge, and then vacuum the area. Now, I just clean up the majority with a paper towel and whip out this product; it's a huge time saver. The only issue I have is that it doesn't clean near the edge of walls very well, but that's not a very big con. Cleaning the machine is fairly simple as well, and I really like that it has it's own storage tray so it's not just sitting on the floor.
Overall I really like this product. It's light weight, cleans like crazy and saves a ton of time. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you have pets.

Nice looking router with good security
on April 26, 2018
Posted by: Chuck
from DC
The Norton Core router has always intrigued me, so when I got a chance to test one, I took it. The router is actually nice to look at; it's more like a piece of art than a router, so there's no need to try to hide it. The initial set up was fairly typical; installation of the management app, resetting of the modem, and then finally the hookup of the router itself. The management app allows easy access to the network settings. You'll find all the typical settings, all of which are well organized and give you a huge amount of control over who has access to your network, for how long, and what kind of content they can view. I had my network configured in a few minutes and then just sat back and waited to see what got stopped from coming in. The Core also allows you to install Norton Security on all of your devices, although I haven't done this since I am currently using another product. The signal strength from the router was comparable to my Linksys router, and I saw no issues with streaming video on multiple devices. After a few days, I realized that Malwarebytes (which usually reported malicious attacks a few times a day) had stopped reporting attacks. I checked the logs on the Norton Core, and sure enough, it had been stopping everything before it even got into the network. However, after about 4 days, I had a problem where one of my devices lost its internet connection. It was still connected to the router, and other devices that were connected still had outside access, but nothing I did would allow the problem device to get back to the internet. I wound up having to reboot the router. Then a few days after that, all outside access dropped. I rebooted the router, all the devices reconnected, but there was still no internet access. This time I had to reboot the modem as well. About four days later, this happened again, and I decided to contact Norton support. I was told there was a problem with the Core trying to regain an IP if the ISP issued an IPv6 address instead of IPv4. However, while trying to gain access to the router logs, the unit became unresponsive so the CSR said there was probably a hardware issue as well and I was sent a new one. Once I received the new one, I had to call support again, because my account wouldn't allow me to activate the new router. It was never explained why this was the case, but they got it activated and I was also told that the IPv6 issue had been resolved with an update. The new router has been up for a little over a week with no issues. One thing that I saw as both as a pro and a con, is that after the first year, you have to commit to a $10/month 'contract' with Norton, or the router simply becomes a hi-end router without all of the extra benefits. I'm used to spending less than half of that amount for a yearly subscription to put another product on all my devices, so I'm not sure what I'll do at the end of the free year.
Overall, the Norton Core router does what it's supposed to; it stops attacks before they even get into your network. I would definitely recommend this router, but only after disclosing the $10/month fee that kicks in after the first year.

Great look, great sound
on April 2, 2018

The Sony SRS-XB41 Bluetooth portable speaker puts out really nice sound, and has some features that make it unique compared to other BT speakers.
This speaker is about 50% larger than the SRS-XB31 and the sound is bigger; the overall volume is about the same, but the XB41 has stronger bass. The speaker is nice looking; it's completely covered in a high quality fabric with the SONY logo front bottom center, giving it a very sleek, almost elegant, appearance. As with the XB31, there are multi-colored LEDs surrounding the face of the speaker, but instead of small white LEDS, the XB41 has large white LEDS that appear to illuminate the cones of the 2 speakers... making them look like large glowing eyes. These lights are controlled through settings available in the Sony Music Center App. This model also has a feature inside the main app called Fiestable that allows added control to lighting and additional sounds for parties, etc. The physical controls are minimal (5 buttons: play/pause, vol-, vol+, on/off/pair, Live Sound), and are both well located and easily distinguishable by touch. The water-sensitive portions (power port, USB port, etc) are hidden beneath a small, rubberized hatch on the back.
Pairing the speaker with my phone (and other devices) was simple and once I got the app set up and the speaker paired, I was able to get to the settings that allow you to change the colors/flashing of the LEDs, adjust the sound, and some other functions. The Fiestable app allows you ALOT of control over the colors of the lights as well functionality that lets you control the sound of whatever you're playing with the ability to add sounds (drums, scratching, etc). I'll probably never really use these functions, but they are nice. The speaker supposedly gives you the ability to connect to other speakers via two methods (Bluetooth and Party Chain) but unfortunately it seems like you can only pair with the same model. I have an XB31 and I've tried multiple times to connect the speakers using either method, but to no avail. I did call Sony support, and they confirmed that only speakers of the same model will connect with each other. I'm sorry, but in my opinion, that's just stupid. Oh well, at least you know now.
As far as sound goes, the speaker is great. I don't really like the 'Live Sound' functionality, which is supposed to spread the sound. It might sound better outside, but inside I think it flattens the sound and makes it 'hollow'. Again, the volume from the XB31 is comparable to this speaker, but the sound from the XB41 is richer and it easily fills a room with music without straining.
Overall, I think this speaker is another home-run for Sony. It looks and sounds great. I would definitely recommend it.

Simple and effective
on March 16, 2018
Posted by: Chuck
from DC
The Linksys RE9000 Extender is a rather simple device that performs very well. I don't really have any true dead zones inside my house, but there are a few places on the second floor where the 5GHz band from the router is weak enough to cause a device to switch to 2.4 GHz (or at least try). The initial set up of the unit was fairly simple; I placed the extender where I thought it should go, plugged it in, and then connected to it with a tablet. There's a 'Spot Finder' functionality (in the setup interface) that allows you to see whether you've placed the device too close or too far from the router. In my case, I was a very close to being too close, so I moved the extender and went through the process again. However, once the initial setup was complete, I ran into a problem; I couldn't connect to the admin interface for the extender. I was using the links presented on the final page(s) of the setup interface, and I kept being told I wasn't connected to the extender. I actually reset the unit and went through the whole process again, only to have the same thing happen. I then went back through the 'Quick Start Guide' and discovered that the link to access the admin interface was completely different from what was presented on the final pages of the setup interface. Not a show stopper, but still frustrating. The admin settings are what you would expect to find; access control, logs, status, etc. Once up an running, the coverage on the upper floor of my house is superb. I tested a 4K video stream with another device streaming music and there were no hiccups whatsoever.
All in all, this product does what it's supposed, and does it well. It's fairly simple to set up (except for the faulty links I mentioned), and once it's up and running, you just forget it's there. I would recommend this to anyone looking to improve their WiFi signal in their house.

Sleek speaker with great sound
on March 14, 2018
Posted by: Chuck
from DC
The Sony SRS-XB31 Bluetooth portable speaker is a relatively small speaker that puts out some nice sound, and has some features that make it unique compared to other BT speakers I had.
Out of the box, the speaker looks great; it's completely covered in a high quality fabric with the SONY logo front bottom center, giving the 9"x3" frame a sleek appearance, and making the speaker look like it would be equally at home on a desk, bookshelf, or sitting by a pool. Multi-colored LEDs surround the face of the speaker with white LEDs on either side. These lights are controlled through settings available in the Sony app. The physical controls are minimal (4 buttons: play/pause, vol-, vol+, on/off/pair), and are both well located and easily distinguishable by touch. The water-sensitive portions (power port, USB port, etc) are hidden beneath a small, rubberized hatch on the back. The documentation says the speaker is waterproof, and although I haven't thrown it in the tub to test it, I think it could get sprayed all day long and not care. I believe if it did get dunked, you'd have at least few mins to fish it out before you'd have to even begin to worry about water getting in the back.
Pairing the speaker with my phone was simple enough, but I did the pairing before installing the Sony Music Center app, and once I did install the app, I had trouble getting it to recognize the speaker. I wound up having to un-pair the speaker from the phone and then re-pairing through the app. I also had some trouble pairing additional devices with the speaker, just using the BT settings on the devices. I'm not sure what the problem was, but it was a bit frustrating. Once I got the app set up and the speaker paired, I was able to get to the settings that allow you to change the colors/flashing of the LEDs, adjust the sound through a 3-band equalizer, and some other functions. The speaker gives you the ability to connect to other speakers, which of course I can't do, and it also has a feature that allows you to create sounds using what Sony calls Party Booster. I don't plan on using this feature, so I haven't bothered turning it on.
The speaker produces very nice sound in my opinion. It is a bit bass heavy (which I fully expected), but the sound is much fuller than the other BT speakers I have. I also listen to talk radio/audio books at times, and I found the bass a bit much for some of those, so I had to use the app to crank the bass down and the middle/treble up. However, with music, I use the ClearAudio+ setting in the app and just sit back and enjoy. This speaker will easily fill a room with music without sounding like it's about to give up the ghost, which is much different than at least one of the other BT speakers I have.
Overall, I think this speaker is a home-run for Sony. It looks and sounds great. I would definitely recommend it.

Great product

I wanted to clean the light, grayish-white wall to wall carpet in the upper level of my house, but I also wanted a product that wasn't going to be too heavy. After reading many reviews I decided to try this one since it was on sale at the time, and so far I'm very pleased with it. Filling the clean water tank with water and cleaning solution is simple, but I do have some reservations about the accuracy of the 'fill to' line for the cleaning solution. On my first fill, I used the 'fill to' line on the tank, but then I realized it took about 1/2 of the 8oz complimentary bottle, which is quite a bit more than the suggested 2.5 oz. Not a big deal, but after that I started using the measuring cup that was included. Emptying and replacing the dirty water tank is very quick. After the first room was clean, I decided to wait until the next day to clean the rest of the floors, so I broke the unit down to see how hard it was to clean; it was very simple. The only problem I had was the next day when I was about to finish the second room and realized that I hadn't snapped the brush cover back in place so it was losing suction... which meant about half of the water wasn't recovered. Easy enough to fix, and then I just went over the room again. The carpets look and smell great. There were a few spots in high traffic areas that I had to go over 2-3 times, but eventually they either were gone or were so faint you couldn't really notice them. I did try the hose with the attachments on the stairs, and it did a good job, although I wasn't expecting alot since there was no brush on the attachment. Overall, I'm very pleased with this machine.

Enjoy up to 10 hours of wireless audio with these Sony noise-canceling headphones. They produce rich sound by playing at audio frequencies of 3-40,000Hz and have a closed-back design that blocks outside noise for a better listening experience. These Sony noise-canceling headphones sit comfortably behind the neck and work with or without the 1m wire.

Do the ear buds retract or adjust in any way

They do NOT retract. There is a groove along the edge of each side of the neckband that you can push the cords into for storage or to reduce the amount of loose cord when wearing, but the cords aren't overly long, so I don't even bother with it when I'm wearing them.
