Powerful & Slim Smoothie Machine
on October 26, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
This is a nice single-purpose blender for smoothies that is simple to operate and slim enough to fit in any available counter space. It comes with a powerful motorized base and a single blending mechanism - along with three hard plastic smoothie "cups" (each one holds about two fluid cups of liquid), two spout lids, and a single storage lid. There are no buttons or dials or frills, the motor engages when you depress the cup with the blending mechanism on the base.
The motor is strong and attacks frozen fruits and ice with no problem. It's nice that they included three identical containers, but strange that they included two drink lids and one storage lid (three drink lids and three storage lids or one drink lid and two storage lids would have made more sense). But it's nice to have more than one container at my disposal that needs to be washed immediately before using it for a new drink.
The base is solid and slim and should fit just about anywhere.
The mechanism that engages from the motorized base is made of hard plastic but the teeth on the mechanism are rubberized to reduce impact. But the teeth on the blending mechanism (that fits in the smoothie chambers) is just hard plastic and is probably the single weak point for this device (see photo).
A solid device which can surely replace the need for a blender for any smaller tasks.

Gorgeous Laptop - Not For All Gamers
on October 4, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
It is difficult to figure out what Dell was going for with this laptop. My best guess is that they are going for a reduced specification (and cheaper) version of their gorgeous and well-received Dell G7 I7 gaming computer.
This laptop is smaller (15.6" screen vs. a 17.3" screen) and less heavy (5.4 lbs. vs. 6.6 lbs. - still heavy). System RAM is smaller (8 gigabytes vs. 16 gigabytes) and video RAM is smaller (4 gigabytes vs. 8 gigabytes). And the processor here is a Ryzen 7 5000 series (vs. an Intel Core i7 series....but that's fine with me). Finally, the display here refreshes at 120 Hz vs. the (possibly excessive) 300 Hz rate of it's larger sibling. Both systems come with with a 512 gigabyte solid state drive.
This is a gorgeous computer that would be well-suited for most power users out there. The Ryzen processor is incredibly fast and the computer feels very responsive. It is well-cooled and runs very cool even when taxing the components (the cooling fans really do their job well and are not too distractingly loud).
The sound is very good and surprisingly loud for laptop sound - headphone sound is excellent. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity are easily better on this laptop than on any other computer I own - truly stellar performance.
Ports are about what you would expect: 1 ethernet, 1 HDMI, 3 USB, and 1 USB-C.
There are three limitations here, though, that make this potentially questionable for gamers: (1) system memory of 8 gigabytes is asking for trouble, (2) the graphics card is is woefully inadequate for some power-users, & (3) the video refresh rate is probably bottom-tier for new releases (especially for a laptop marketed as a gaming computer).
For most home and office power-users, this is very desirable and well-functioning laptop. It is attractive and very sturdy and responds as fast as lightening. And I find the system performs magnificently with even heavy-duty editing in Adobe. This is a gorgeous laptop.
But I think it's a stretch to market this as a gaming laptop - the RAM can be expanded (but shouldn't need to be) - the video card is fixed (the first is a limitation by Dell, the second is a limitation by NVIDIA). The display refresh rate shouldn't be a deal-breaker here, but I think that any serious gaming laptop should be competing at a higher level.
Perhaps this would be more appropriately called a powerful laptop suitable for enjoyable mid-range gaming.
Ultimately you should always look for a laptop (or desktop) that is dressed for the games you want....not for the games you have. And remember that games will grow MORE demanding, not LESS demanding.
I love this laptop and find it very satisfying to use, but it won't serve as a portable version of my gaming desktop.

Designed in Sweden for expert removal of airborne allergens. Unlike a standard fan, Pure Fan Auto cleans the air of pollutants as it cools. Customizable to fit your needs, the fan features a colorful fabric pre-filter and Auto mode setting to auto-adjust to your real-time room conditions. Pure Fan Auto delivers more clean air than Dyson purifying fans¹ and removes over 99%² of airborne allergens like dust and pollen with Blueair's signature HEPASilent™ filtration technology. The unique combination of electrostatic and mechanical filtration effectively removes airborne allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander with low noise and energy consumption. The fan works by pulling in dirty room air from the back through a pre-filter and particle filter using patented fan technology to deliver a gentle stream of clean, cooling air back into your room. Provides cool comfort by distributing air into the room at a 90-degree angle, so there's no need for oscillation. Upgraded features from the original Pure Fan offer simple air quality management. Set to Auto mode, the fan will automatically increase speed when particle pollution levels rise in your indoor environment and return to a lower rate once the air is clean. The air quality indicator (AQI) located on the top left of the fan keeps you up to date on the current status of your air. The LED displays one of three colors to indicate that room conditions are good, moderate, or polluted based on real-time measurements of fine particle (PM2.5) concentrations. Customize to your space with unique machine-washable fabric pre-filters available in five colors. Designed to catch larger particles to extend the primary filter's life, pre-filters in Arctic Trail and Night Waves come standard with the Pure Fan Auto. ENERGY STAR® certified for energy efficiency, Pure Fan Auto uses less energy than a light bulb.³ The fan utilizes HEPASilent™ filtration technology to clean the air as it cools with noise levels quieter than a whisper on low (25 dB) and less noise than a normal conversation on high (54 dB).⁴ Minimalist features are a breath of fresh air. Use the fan's two buttons to turn on/off, cycle through three-speed settings, set Auto and Night mode. Plus, the filter indicator light alerts you when it's time to replace the filter. Filter replacement is recommended about every six months. The Pure Fan Auto fits in well on a tabletop or directly on the floor in any area of your home. The balanced design is light enough to move easily, yet the low center of gravity makes it difficult to knock over. As an added benefit, unlike standard fans that use blades that get covered with dust and require disassembly to clean, Pure Fan Auto captures airborne dust before it has a chance to stick to the fan blades, using pre-filters that can be cleaned with a quick vacuum. At Blueair, our Swedish heritage inspires sustainability and quality at the heart of everything we do. Like our air purifiers, Pure Fan Auto is AHAM Verifide for Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), certified by ENERGY STAR for energy efficiency, and certified by the California EPA Air Resources Board (CARB) for safe ozone emissions. ¹ Comparing dust and pollen CADR (AHAM AC-1) on high to Dyson purifying fans (TP01, TP02, TP04, HP01, HP04, DP04) ² Based on third-party testing of removal rate of particles, pollen particles (5-11µm) in less than 20 minutes and dust particles (0.5-3µm) in 30 minutes according to AHAM AC-1-2019 standard. ³ On lowest speed, according to GB/T18801-2015 standard. "Light bulb" is defined as an LED light bulb with 40 W energy consumption. ⁴ Sound pressure according to GB/T18801. A whisper is about 30 dB; normal conversation is about 60 dB.

Interesting New Filtered Air Entry
on September 24, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
Blueair has been making some of the best air filtration systems on the market and they produce a whole range of devices that are designed for use in spaces from small personal spaces all the way up to filtration devices for huge industrial settings filled with potentially dangerous fumes and smoke. Their device quality is surely rooted in the quality of the filters themselves, but most of their devices, including this one, also contain some internal intelligence that controls air flow to react to perceived degradation of air quality.
This new entry is curious because they are marketing the device as a fan that filters - and they are really coming after Dyson. It is conceptually quite simple: a whisper-quiet room fan which also uses electrostatic and physical filtration systems to aggressively remove common household allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander.
Designed in Sweden, this is actually a very attractive unit as well (with the same kind of vibe as products typically found in that famous huge store from Sweden).
Blueair publishes extensive specs for everything they make so there is no need to wonder about even minute details about their products - and in all categories of space protection, they are always ranked at the top. This is a serious company that is committed to quality and I have nothing but the strongest recommendation for their new fan-centered offering.

Small, Well Designed, and Bright
on August 14, 2021

This is a lightweight and rechargeable floodlight of LED lights. It has a USB-out powerbank function, but that is the least impressive function of this light bar.
Well described on the package, this is a multi-mode RGB light bar that offers a bright floodlight with controls for brightness (24 levels), white light throughout 25 color temperatures, and gorgeous colors throughout the full rainbow of choices.
While stunningly bright, this is a tiny device - measuring at about 3"x6" - just a little bit smaller than a large index card. On both the longer and shorter sides are included recessive screw mounts for the included camera shoe attachment and which also attach to standard tripods.
Operation is simple to the point of beauty - on/off on top - operation on the side: color mode (white/color/flash), scroll (RGB color/white temperature/flash mode), brightness. I can't imagine how anyone would use the flash function creatively, but its addition doesn't detract from the beauty of this little gem in any way.
There is a great little information screen on the back that summarizes your mode and intensity and other features. It also estimates the time remaining on a charge (if you're not operating with direct USB-C input) - the box suggests a usage time of about 90 minutes but the screen estimates I have seen so far (at full brightness) suggest a usage time of less than an hour.
This comes out of the box looking like a bulky handheld flashlight and proceeds to amaze. It is very bright! And the degrees of color and, in white mode the degrees of temperature, are surprising.
This is a small handheld device that performs way beyond something you would expect for something so small.

Surprisingly Adaptable Starter Security System
on July 25, 2021

Included in this set are two wireless (rechargeable) indoor/outdoor cameras and a small but surprisingly responsive touch-screen monitor which is also the control center. There was also a compact range extender included that I did not need. All cables and adapters are included. Mounting hardware for the cameras is included but it is a little fussy and strangely designed for my taste.
The home center appears to be capable of monitoring two additional inputs (doorbell cameras, various additional forms of cameras, sensors, etc.).
Setup is very simple. I chose my setup with wi-fi so that I could receive motion alerts over my smart phone. However, it also possible to establish this system fully locally without remote access.
Imaging is incredibly clear, even at the lowest resolution setting. Color rendering and adaptability based on problems with back lighting are surprisingly good.
This is not designed to be a continuously recording system - it records based on motion detection. And while I found the defaults to be well chosen, the menu options allow for refinements in area lighting, in sensitivity of motion detection, and in person detection.
Most impressively, though, for the field of view of each camera, it is also possible to restrict sensitivity to user-defined rectangular motion zones (like if you want to monitor your front porch but don't want to be alerted by every car passing your house on the street beyond your porch).
Most important of all: this is a fully self-contained system - meaning that Lorex isn't trying to sell you something with limited functionality in the interest of selling you a subscription to some larger functionality or service. There is no additional expense expected or required here for full functionality (unless you want to add a couple extra devices).
This is a very desirable starter security system.

Strong Design With MANY Failures
on July 6, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
Conceptually, this is a desirable and well-designed device. It is a compact device that is inserted in the hole in your door between the front and back of a deadbolt lock - the deadbolt is replaced and is designed to act with your existing keying mechanism and to also act with that new bluetooth device it is paired with.
Mounting hardware is included and is designed to fit immediately in newer doorways. My house is older and the existing indentations for deadbolt and strike plate guards are smaller and would require modifications.
Summary: older locks might not be ready for a simple upgrade.
Also: all of the installation information showed the lock being installed on the left side of a door (from the inside) - and it was not at all obvious that the lock installation could be rotated 180° about the vertical axis without problem (it can be, but that was another call to technical support).
The larger issue I had, though, was in the design and testing that went on before release of this lock. There was no way I was willing to dismantle everything in my doorway to install a new lock without measurements and without knowing if the new lock would actually work.
And, to start out with, it just didn't work. Assembly is no problem (surely in the door, but, simply enough for me, off the door as well). The application was easy enough to install and I was able to pair with my lock immediately (bluetooth). But nothing worked right with the locking and unlocking.
But I was doing this in front of me on a table with my smart phone and the lock in front of me and nearly touching.
Customer support started out unable to help me because, after my description of all my observations, they told me they had to transfer me to someone specific to Best Buy to answer my questions. Possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard from any customer support. And that initial response I got from customer support had to be via email which was a canned answer that didn't address any of the specific issues I discussed during my initial call.
So I called back. And I went through a TON of tests with the lock which failed each time. Every time I clarified the specific nature of the problem, I got put on hold while the helpdesk escalated the problem and nobody had ever reported my problem before.
Based on a random comment from the (very patient) person helping me, and after over an hour on the phone during multiple calls, I realized that I was testing the lock resting on the table in front of me (it was not oriented up/down). Standing the lock upright (but also re-calibrating it (?) this way) seems to have resolved all my problems so far. So I guess that people who have locks on doors to attics and basements can't use a lock like this? How could something like this ever be left unclear in the installation and operating instructions and requirements?
So....I did the dumbest possible test for a lock like this (I tested it uninstalled to make sure it worked seamlessly before installing it!) and it failed immediately and the company (and literature) didn't react like this had ever come up before.
This is a solidly designed device and I think it would be very desirable for a modern home. But if my first simple test out of the box fails repeatedly and nobody in technical support can be assertive with a response, then there is no way I would ever recommend this product or company to anybody.
Zero stars. This company needs to sort out horrifically bad failures before going to market.

A Curious And Well-Designed Concept
on June 25, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
RAYCOP's handheld allergen vacuum is a device that is designed to be used sort of like a large and oddly shaped iron on surfaces like beds and upholstery - except instead of removing wrinkles from fabrics, it removes dust mite debris and other physical allergens and exposes the fabric surfaces to strong enough UV light to reduce the amount of bacteria and viruses present.
It is very simple to use - you press a button to turn it on, then you slowly move it back and forth over areas of fabric that might be holding allergens.
The vacuum action is quite strong and is assisted by a pulsating beater-bar type brush. Debris is collected in a small dust box with a fine filter - you can see the amount of collected debris from the top of the vacuum. Air is then filtered through a small HEPA filter before being channeled out the sides of the vacuum. The path of suction (about 6.5" wide) is then exposed to a germicidal 8 watt UV-C light. Note: the UV light cycles off when the vacuum is not travelling along a surface as a safety feature to prevent exposure to skin and eyes.
The debris collection chamber and filter, the pulsating brush, the HEPA filter, and the UV lamp (and protective tube) are easy to remove and clean or replace.
Because it is light and moves easily across the surfaces of fabrics, it doesn't feel like it is doing much work. Before trying this out on my old mattress, I aggressively used a standard vacuum first. What the RAYCOP vacuum was able to extract behind that initial vacuum was staggering (and kind of disturbing). There is no doubt that this vacuum is well tailored to extracting physical allergens from the fabrics closest to your respiratory tract (and, again, it's really going for dust mites here). People with severe allergies might still require additional interventions, but this little tool is a gem.
Enthusiastically recommended.

Finally A Chromebook That Performs Like A Laptop
on June 9, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
In a nice departure from small format Chromebooks, ASUS has released this beast of a laptop that happens to feature the Chrome operating system (so, yes, it's a Chromebook).
The Intel® Core™ i3 processor might not be a high-end desirable processor for a Windows PC, but the processing power for this operating system, combined with 8 GB of RAM and a lightening-fast 128 GB solid state hard drive make this the the first speedy Chromebook I have ever seen.
The 15.6" display is beautiful - 1920 x 1080 (max) with beautiful color - and glossy, which I usually hate from ASUS but the implementation here is less mirrorlike.
I/O ports are few but sufficient: 2 x USB-C (both of which function as charging ports - the power supply is USB-C), 1 x USB-A, 1 x HDMI, and a Micro SD card reader.
There is full and impressive sound produced through the Harman/Kardon speakers. And there is a responsive 720p HD camera.
Setup took me about 10 minutes (after charging) - most of that time resulted from the installation of an update.
The most desirable feature of this model (for me) is the touch screen display. For anyone who has not used a laptop with a touch screen display, the touch screen is not so much a feature in laptop mode - but when you fold the keyboard back under (or behind) the screen, the keyboard entry is disabled and the screen becomes a tablet. And while the dimensions of this screen are wildly different from what you might think of for a tablet, in function, you get much wider (or taller) tablet format that I find very desirable.
Construction feels strong and solid with no weak points anticipating breakage. But is a hefty beast - weighing-in at a whopping 4 1/3 lbs.
Alas, with the increased memory and storage and size, this Chromebook is more expensive than some of the wispier models. But the performance and storage capabilities here place this way ahead of comparably-priced Windows laptops (plus, this isn't bloated by Windows).
Enthusiastically recommended!

Larger Ink Cartridges And Stunning Color
on June 2, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
This is branded as a multiply-hyphenated all-in-one multi-function printer and it lives up to the hyphens (for the most part). It is an inkjet printer/scanner/copier/faxer. And all of those functions function beautifully.
But to be clear about the major selling point here, this printer is advertising that it comes with a year of ink included in the box. And, optimized, that might be close to verifiable. But with standard home usage, there is no way you will be getting a year of ink in the box.
But I'm not hating on this new ink paradigm. The cartridges here are huge (and they are easily loadable from the front of the printer). Their unrealistic goal for a year of printing is about 1,200 pages of each color (and you double that for their larger black cartridge) - for a realistic goal, divide that number by three or four. And, for color printing, that's still an amazing ink output.
As for functions, this is a basic all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/faxer with no surprises. I was able to set this printer up wirelessly in no time at all and it was able to print a ton of cascading print jobs efficiently and effortlessly.
There are no ports to allow you to print from memory cards. And there is only a single tray for paper feed (this is a lower-level printer...so if you want to print on photo paper, you need to do a little bit of work).
Ultimately, the only things that matter are clarity and speed and cost. I think this printer gets five stars on clarity with a slightly lower 4.5 stars for speed and cost.
Brother is well recommended here.

Keeping Up With Stiff Competition
on May 22, 2021
Posted by: VADarkstar
from Portsmouth, VA
Cordless stick vacuums are all the rage these days and they can be very impressive. But many models continue to have problems with battery longevity and failure - so it is difficult to assess the expected lifespan of the heartbeat of any cordless vacuum.
And while every vacuum manufacturer seems to be rushing a cordless stick vacuum to market, there are only a few of them that are playing at the top of their game: Tineco, Dyson, Samsung, and LG. All of them look and perform about the same (mostly just variations on the original Dyson design). For me, it is difficult to differentiate between their releases based on ergonomics or functionality.
Note: Miele makes a well-received vacuum in this category that is not so identical in design, but I find that its lower center of gravity makes it clunky to maneuver.
But this new model from LG has a few solid improvements that, for me, make it recommendable in a very competitive field.
(1) It comes with TWO batteries, not one. They advertise this fact claiming "two rechargeable batteries that deliver up to 120 minutes* of uninterrupted cleaning." And the "*" represents the caveats of usage at the lowest possible setting (and, of course, spread across two separate batteries at full charge). But, caveats aside, the batteries here are amazing. I have a three bedroom house and can now vacuum my entire house at the highest suction setting and with the beater bar running on a single battery. Outstanding!
(2) One of the included attachments here is the terribly named "Power Mop Nozzle" - even the image on the box is unimpressive. But it's actually amazing. It is a replacement head for the primary vacuuming attachment that buffs hard floors (using water, not cleaning fluids) - and the mopping head is noticeably heavier than the vacuuming head which you would need to insure the buffing heads have sufficient contact with the floor. This kit comes with two sets of washable buffers. It felt very strange and counterintuitive to mop my floors with a vacuum cleaner but this system works beautifully.
(3) Kompressor™ technology - a term I do not like that describes an action that I love. The debris receiving reservoir is quite small on this vacuum (as it is on all cordless stick vacuums) - and even some light vacuuming can collect debris in a way that reduces capacity. Kompressor™ technology is, quite simply, a manual way to compress/kompress the collected debris to the bottom of the collection chamber to support less-frequent emptyings. As a dog owner whose house is constantly littered with hair, this single simple manual packing tool is amazing.
(4) I know this is a goofy detail, but there is NO assumption here that you want to install any part of this system on a wall! Every part fits on a very compact and well-designed stand. The battery in the vacuum charges and the spare battery charges separately so you can always depend on both batteries being at full charge and at your disposal. There is even room on the back of the stand for the spare buffing wheels for the power mop.
(5) The final detail that is amazing for me is the telescoping wand (the "stick" part of this stick vacuum). Basically, the part that runs between the motor and the end of the vacuum can be extended by about a foot. LG rightly advertises it as a feature to help you with those hard-to-reach places - but as a tall person, I found it incredibly helpful to be able to simply adjust the vacuum so I didn't have to stoop down while I was cleaning house.
This vacuum is doing everything it can to stand out in a very competitive field.
VERY highly recommended!
