A Joy Ride!
on April 16, 2024
Posted by: VADarkstar
The GoTrax XR ADVANCE is an incredibly fun electric scooter. It has a powerful drive motor, a battery that will support about an hour of continuous use, and large pneumatic tires that absorb a lot of shock from uneven terrain.
I weigh-in at the full 220 pound weight limit for this scooter and I found that it quickly accelerated to the full 10+ mph in first gear and to the full 15+ mph in second gear without hesitation. And at 10 mph, I was able to travel close to 10 miles without fully depleting the battery - a remarkable feat. Operation is practically silent (I have an older scooter that whines under my weight - rude!).
It folds for easy carrying and storage and has a kickstand to keep it upright while stopped. I would describe it as being "heavier than it looks" but in a good way...meaning it feels very well built and practically impervious to damage.
I only have two negative things to mention - things that I wish I had understood up front. (1) There is some assembly required - just attaching the handlebars to the support and attaching the brake cable. The assembly, in hindsight, is quite simple but the instructions were VERY poorly written and illustrated. So, a ten minute task took me about 45 minutes to figure out. And (2) The scooter functions are all controlled by a single button: on, off, headlight, units of speed display, and gear change. The user manual gave no indication of how to use the button to change gears and I spent a lot of time turning the headlight on and off before finally figuring out the system - a separate single-function gear change button would have been simpler to use. Both of these problems I would consider to be new user problems that have no meaning after a few initial rides.
I never really pay any attention to kids riding scooters for fun or adults riding rental scooters downtown - nobody does. But I have noticed, as a 61 year old flying around my neighborhood on this scooter, that everyone I pass smiles and waves at me. I am the coolest guy in my zip code.
Highest possible recommendation on this joy ride!

I Have A Controversial Take On This Monitor
on March 28, 2024
Posted by: VADarkstar
Responsive and bright, this is an extremely likeable monitor, especially for the price. Definitely a larger version of their equally desirable 23.8" model.
Based on its refresh rate and response time, this is a functional gaming computer and a wonderful device for video viewing and editing - although resolution is capped at Full HD. Color presentation is magnificent with much richer blacks than I was expecting for such an inexpensive monitor - but I wish the contrast could be better.
The design is fantastic and assembly was incredibly simple.
My controversial take on this is that I think we are at an interesting point where manufacturers of monitors are developing new models with fewer design improvements while televisions are growing out of control in size and specifications. Little-by-little, "gaming mode" (better refresh rates and response times) is finding its way into TVs of all sizes - and prices are getting lower and lower. Right now, my pretty TVs can't compete with a monitor like this ASUS monitor for gaming, but they have way better resolution, contrast, color, and brightness specifications. With the resources that these TV manufacturers have to throw at making displays, I believe that they will be able to improve their performance and lower their prices to the point where their offerings will be more attractive to gamers and video content providers than a FHD monitor like this. So, while this is a very desirable monitor for the price NOW, I think that options for larger, more immersive displays might start having the specs we're looking for without having to depend on our familiar computer-specific brands.
Just a thought.

Fast With Excellent Print Quality
on January 11, 2024
Posted by: VADarkstar
Brother has a LOT of printers to choose from - with new models coming out frequently. I have never been disappointed with a Brother printer and I think this one makes an exceptional addition to their line.
This model will copy/scan/print (no fax) and can mobile print/scan from/to your mobile device. Setup was fast and intuitive and completely wireless. And, as with nearly all new printers, there is an easy to use LCD touchscreen interface you use to access various features and settings on the printer.
Large and somewhat heavy (over 22 lbs.), this isn't what I would call a desktop printer. It is also a little bit loud for my taste. But with its aggressive sound comes aggressive performance. It can print single sided copy at up to 36 pages/minute and can fire out double sided copy at just under half that rate (it's fast!).
Brother's advertisement and the operating software both push their Refresh EZ Print Subscription (free trial!!!) but for a single user, I would recommend that you cancel that reminder the first time you see it.
Best feature of this printer is, well, the printing. This isn't new technology, but this printer produces stunning text that is dark and very crisp. An excellent machine - highly recommended.

Very Functional (Mostly) As Advertised
on December 14, 2023
Posted by: VADarkstar
This VTech system is a two camera live remote monitoring system - designed specifically for LIVE monitoring and NOT for unattended surveillance. Included are two cameras with a nice and sturdy 7" color tablet-style monitor with lots of features and controls. When paired with the VTech mobile app, the cameras transmit impressive (up to) 1080p live video feeds to your device (or devices!).
First of all, I have a few real problems with the information represented on the box that are not insignificant:
(1) The cameras do NOT have 360° pan capability. The eye-shaped camera "ball" allows the cameras to tilt (not through 180° but impressive nonetheless) and the camera is mounted on a cylindrical base which rotates back-and-forth from "center" but the video imaging does not cover a full 360° horizontal arc. However, I'm sure that most people would have these cameras mounted on a wall (hardware included) or near a wall - so 360° coverage shouldn't be needed or expected. Still...I'm not sure why VTech chose to misrepresent this specification.
(2) The box advertises that "it" is the (large type) No.1 (smaller type) Baby Monitors Brand by the (microscopic type) NPD Group, Inc.. According to Wikipedia, the NPD Group "measures how consumers shop across all channels, sourcing data from both retailers and consumers to quantify sales, share, distribution, and velocity" - they measure shopping information and NOT quality information. So since, at least while I'm typing, this system is not available for purchase, NPD Group's historical tracking of VTech buying data shouldn't be what I perceive to be a validation of past or future quality (but it looks great on the box). Similarly, since this product is not yet available, surely it did NOT win (?) the 9 out of 10 recommended (?) WOMEN'S CHOICE AWARD 2023 which is also emblazoned on the box.
(3) The imaging of the 720p HD 7" monitor on the box suggests that the included device provides an unrealistic expectation that is not meted out in reality.
I really dislike misrepresentation and I think VTech could gain significant customer confidence by getting the details right here. This product works extremely well and the little bits of resume bloating detracted from what was great, experientially, for me.
So let me start over again with my assessment of what's included in the box. This is a two-camera system (independently powered) that provide a live direct feed to an included monitor (independently powered with rechargeable batteries that VTech claims will last 12+ hours). The cameras do not have any form of battery backup.
The cameras connect to the monitor easily. Actually, the entire initial local setup was incredibly intuitive. The monitor took me a minute to understand, but once I learned the navigational nuances, it was simple and speedy to navigate.
For superficial monitoring purposes, the cameras and monitor are great. Two-way audio works great, color representation is excellent in daylight, B&W low-light representation is very good in reduced light scenarios. For situations where you just want to be noticing things that are out of the ordinary, you should be able to find yourself alerted with peripheral vision alone (this is typically, I assume, going to be a baby monitor and all the expected video and audio cues should get your attention immediately).
But while I found the video and audio quality to be consistently very good, it is worth noting that the monitor's video feed shows a LOT of ghost-y video artifacts that are not great and the camera lenses are VERY bad with video flares from incoming bright light sources (like sunlight through a window which can almost obliterate everything else in the range of view). The cameras are designed to be monitors so just don't point them at the sunset - and the monitor is not designed to capture facial features during a bank robbery - but as a monitor of simple things (like sleepy baby activity) this system does a magnificent job.
The individual camera systems also function as night lights with internal lights that can be adjusted for color and for brightness. The lights can be left on systematically and can be turned on-and-off by simply tapping the top of the camera ring enclosure.
The last part of this system that I would like to address is the associated VTech app. I usually find apps to be the weakest link of a system (and they are frequently monetized). Also, the concept of this whole device system seems to resolve a strictly LOCAL monitoring system requirement. But the VTech Baby Plus app connects directly through WiFi to the cameras to provide the user with monitoring from a distance - literally nanny-camming this system. And the mobile app is fantastic. The pan/tilt/zoom features aren't as efficient as their localized counterparts, but they are reliable and the full 1080p video feed is stunning. The mobile app also allows you to receive notifications for motion and sound events and allows you to take snapshots and videos of live events that can be saved to your phone.
Overall, this is a great live video monitoring system that would serve as a great baby monitor. I was a little upset by misleading statements on the box that I felt were not representative of the newly released components inside and I think that users should know about camera light blindness problems and about annoying monitor video artifacts. I can't imagine a system that is easier to use right out of the box. And I think that users who choose this as a baby monitor will find this to be simultaneously a source of peace-of-mind and the next social media craze.
Highly recommended - but I pulled one star for misrepresentations and for minor faults with the cameras and video representations.

Sennheiser Lite?
on November 15, 2023
Posted by: VADarkstar
Sennheiser definitely has some amazing headphone technology and design. The sound in my old Sennheiser HD1s is almost without flaw. But Sennheiser headphones have been pricey.
Their ACCENTUM headphones here provide some of the quality Sennheiser sound at a much lower cost.
These headphones are very lightweight and, supposedly, sport a battery life of up to 50 hours. The pads on the earpieces isolate you from outside noises effectively but are slightly uncomfortable and feel cheap. The four buttons used to operate the headphones are intuitive to use but don't guide your thumb into place very well - so the navigating buttons feel like a cheap design implementation.
The app that you can use to control these headphones is fantastic. I definitely appreciate the bass boost function and five band user-controlled equalizer available to help contour sound to your liking.
The Active Noise Cancellation function on the ACCENTUM is phenomenal. One of the better implementations of ANC in any headphones I have ever experienced.
Ultimately, though, headphones need to be judged most critically on sound...and these sound very good but not great. Bass response is, in general, full and rich - in bass-heavy music you can feel the air moving into your ears from the headphones. But higher frequencies sound somewhat muted to me - the headphones claim to respond up to 22 kHz but it sounds like there is a significant drop off at the higher frequencies. Even adjusting equalization, I was never able to contour the sound in a way that made the higher frequencies in music come across naturally. Finally, I felt like the maximum volume available in these headphones should have been a little more aggressive - I could never get quieter music up to a level that felt like peak listening volume.
These are very nice but they feel like Sennheiser was just phoning things in to hit a cheaper price point.

Some Things Need This Photoshop!
on November 14, 2023
Posted by: VADarkstar
I grew up in the age of film photography (my first camera was the original Canon AE-1). And that experience continues to inform my approach to imaging today. I always focus on subject, placement, lighting, and color. In the old days it was important to get things right in a few takes. With the amazing quality of the camera on my phone, and with digital imaging in general, it is basically free to take as many shots as I would like to get everything right.
So I am a huge fan of doing everything possible to get that perfect shot in the camera. But we all experience problems. And Photoshop has been there to help us for a long time now - it is our digital darkroom.
But Photoshop has also become the overriding term used to describe a level of photographic alteration that suggests outright misrepresentation. For sure - the amount of manipulation possible with Photoshop allows for complete control of every aspect of an image...even to the point of outright misrepresentation of what was originally captured by a camera.
I don't like "Photoshopping" images, but Photoshop has helped me rescue images with unfortunate defects. I prefer to present my own photographs as unretouched as possible.
But, for years now, I have found myself in a position where I need to have images that represent my work. I am a pastry chef - and I need to be able to illustrate my work on social media platforms. I have spent hours working through tutorials on how separate content in older versions of Photoshop and my own attempts have been frustrating.
This new AI-infused copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements has a LOT of AI elements that are cute, but useless to me (correcting eyes and mouth in portraits, moving/removing objects, extending background).
But there is a single smart element of this new release that makes this an incredible asset for me. Elements 2024 has an amazing ability to separate foreground from background. And as someone who would love to promote my bakery, I have been amazed by results.
I'll post before/after pictures of three images below - where the only alteration in the "after" photo is a cropped image of the "before" image after Adobe was able to identify the subject and, per my command, blur the background. Each of the image transformations below took about 20 seconds total to generate - and, in each case, the subject is unaltered in Photoshop.
I haven't spent much time with the other truly AI features of this release because I'm not looking to alter any of the primary information in my images. But as someone wanting to represent my craft authentically, I am grateful to Adobe for helping manage the periphery of my authentic images so beautifully.
To be clear, the AI elements in this release supplement the extensive tools available in earlier releases of Photoshop. Photoshop has always been a powerful tool. The tools in this new release, for me, help you make content decisions that frequently feel psychic.
To illustrate how simple and powerful this tool is, I will provide three before/after examples below - each one is blur background --> crop. I did the crop manually. Each transformation took 15-20 seconds, the selection of foreground and the blurring was Photoshop's. This might seem like an odd thing to repeat, but this single option allows me to make an amazing image out of anything I can place on ANY surface.

The Inkjet Printer of Cameras
on November 14, 2023
Posted by: VADarkstar
Polaroid's new Now+ camera is being marketed as a groovy analog image creation tool, but it fails to deliver even the simplest pictures with clarity and balance.
These newer cameras differ from older polaroid cameras by having the power supply inside the camera as a rechargeable battery - older camera systems relied on battery packs that were part of the film cartridge. Aside from that, the basic premise of the camera is unchanged.
In this iteration of their camera, Polaroid has added the ability to control the camera remotely from their app. Users can trigger the camera remotely, set a countdown timer, create a double exposure, control the aperture (control depth of field), take a longer exposure (on a tripod) in lower light conditions, go portrait mode, paint with light, or take full control over shutter speed, aperture, flash, and film ejection. And while these options present interesting possibilities for imaging, they require fumbling between the camera and your smartphone - an unwieldy process that I find dissatisfying.
The camera also comes with a set of filters (four color filters and a starburst filter). The strongly colored lenses are a curious choice - I can't really understand what desirable image they are there to create.
What the camera does NOT come with is film. As with more recent Polaroid cameras, this camera uses i-Type films - so you can purchase film packs for color AND for black-and-white photography. And while this option is interesting, it is also expensive. A color film pack goes for about $2.00 an image!
Just like how the consumable cartridges of an inkjet printer are its major expense in the long run, the consumable film packs here become the major expense of owning this camera almost immediately.
But all the bells and whistles aside for this camera, I think the ultimate way to judge this camera is on image clarity and balance when taking a simple no-app picture. Check out my golden retriever below.

A Surprisingly Good Simple Espresso Machine
on November 8, 2023
Posted by: VADarkstar
Fully automated expresso machines have sprawled out in size and in price recently, but not everyone is going to need something over $1000. At the other end of the spectrum is this slim espresso machine by Bella that provides simple espresso drink functionality.
This machine is designed to warm the portafilter and cup with hot water, to extract a single or double shot of expresso at the touch of a button, and to steam milk. That's it.
The one liter water tank is removable for easy filling. You measure coffee out with the included measuring spoon which doubles as a tamper (I don't think this machine is really designed for people who would be weighing their dry grounds). And the shot volume is pre-set and extracts your shots automatically - you press a button and the machine initializes and stops the flow of hot water on its own. Because this machine operates with a single pump, you must transition to the steam mode to froth milk for espresso drinks. It comes to temperature quickly so there is very little delay between turning the machine on and when you can start making espresso.
Even my first shot came out beautifully - perfect volume with an impressive layer of foamy and rich crema on top.
One unexpected feature in this machine is that you can adjust the volumes associated with the single and double shots buttons. And I found the fixed volume to be pretty reliably fixed - the machine reproduced shot after identical shot.
I found only one fault with this machine - the temperature of the water for the extraction can be inconsistent and tended to start out way too cool. As a result, some of my espressos were sour tasting.
And I should end with the caveat that this machine is mostly plastic and aluminum and might present a challenge for heavy-handed users.

A Reliable And Consistent Body Mapping Tool
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: VADarkstar
I am a huge fan of Withings body monitoring scales. My old Body+ scale was my companion for MANY years before a late life internal software upgrade added unfortunate irregularities in body fat measurements.
Since I bought my old Withings scale, the field has been flooded with well-designed and well-reviewed smart scales. This new "Health Station" by Withings is setting the new standard in scales that offer smart body composition analyses.
The daily full-body scan that I receive from this device includes:
(1) Weight (yeah).
(2) Heart rate.
(3) Fat mass and muscle mass segmented by arms/torso/legs.
(4) Visceral fat.
(5) Lean mass.
(6) Water mass.
(7) Trends in body composition (which documents even the most mundane accomplishments!).
(8) Electrodermal activity and vascular age (not what I'm looking at right now).
Some of these details are summarized on the scale in my morning readings - along with daily weather forecast parameters and air quality summaries. Most details and trends are covered in the excellent and intuitive application that Withings provides.
My greatest reaction to this scale is that it gives impressively reproducible results - repeated sequential measurements give nearly identical results. The results feel wholly tied to how I feel about my body - I don't notice any outsized swings in measurement based on differences in hydration levels or as a reaction to a sudden change in eating habits. Naturally I expect my body composition to vary from day to day, but variations for a big guy like me shouldn't be all over the place. Because this scale isn't responding hysterically to my body from day to day, I feel more inclined to listen to its message.
All of what I have said above would appeal to me in a body monitor. But Withings is branding this as a "Health Station." This new release includes the option to perform a six-lead electrocardiogram (a graphical representation of you heart's performance). This single scan, alone, requires 30 seconds of your morning routine and utilizes the scale's pull-up bar which adds contacts for your two palms and your two thumbs (your feet provide the other two contacts). This single feature is covered in a separate and VERY lengthy introductory booklet - kind of a slow-start guide.
For people with a healthy heart, this new sensing and tracking capability won't be very interesting or helpful. But for other aging people, it might be useful in suggesting variations that might be worth seeking expert advice.
To be clear, the separate product guide included to address their ECG monitoring capability is flooded with disclaimers (consult a doctor immediately if..., do not self-diagnose/self-medicate if..., does not identify all instances of atrial fibrillation..., cannot detect other arrhythmias other than atrial fibrillation..., and whatnot). Withings' guide for this is also a must-read for understanding inconclusive results. This is a rare event where I won't criticize a device for providing information that is unintuitive - in this case the lack of understanding is on my part and should definitely be clarified.
Withings is definitely overselling the professional quality of this device in their product guide but they're not wrong: "The Withings Scan Monitor 2.0 is intended for adult patients in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, and homes." This is being used in my home and I'm hoping it can be my portal to pre-pandemic weight and fat levels.
Yes, it takes me nearly two minutes to scan everything every morning, but I like getting the full story as a result. The scale on this device is, literally, the least important feature.
Reliable, consistent, incredible.

The 800 cfm – 12-amp Electric Turbine Blower is, quite simply, the most powerful electric blower in the marketplace. Other 800 cfm (Cubic Feet per Minute) blowers don’t put out wind power at 135 mph. Physics shouldn’t allow it, but our engineers found a workaround. And even though you’re going to want to blow at that speed all the time, you can use the variable speed control to dial it down. When you need even more power than the 800 cfm/135 mph can provide, there’s the Hyper-Stream nozzle that focuses all the airflow right where you need it. Believe it or not, all that power can be controlled with one hand. The whole unit is only 6.6 lbs., and that amazing Turbine tech creates a wind tunnel that is easy to point. The cord retainer keeps extension cords from pulling apart, even on snags. And you don’t need any tools to put it together. Time to go clear that lawn.

Very Powerful, Very Impressive
on October 24, 2023

Well-balanced, lightweight (about 6 1/2 lbs.), and relatively quiet for what it does, this new WORX corded blower is very impressive. It does not have a vacuum feature, but it is aggressive in its single function. Fully assembled in the box, it is ready to use immediately.
The 12-amp motor in this blower can channel air through the blower tube at a rate of 800 cfm (which is about 135 mph!) and the thumb-operated switch allows you to operate the blower at multiple speeds with the lowest speed setting generating about half of the blower's maximum rate.
Cord permitting, the powerful stream from this blower works best for clearing a large area quickly (think: blowing leaves into a tarp or clearing out a wood shop). Dry leaves, dirt, and debris offer no resistance whatsoever to this WORX. My only cautionary observation is that the larger diameter of the blower tube channels the air flow so broadly that the blower tends to have some difficulty moving wet leaves and debris - though once wet items break free from the ground, they are no match for this blower.
At a competitively low price, compared to other electric blowers, this new WORX model moves air at a rate that rivals costlier gas-powered blowers.
Enthusiastically recommended.
I would recommend this to a friend!
