We have always liked hearing Lenny's songs on the rock stations but somehow never got around to purchasing any CDs over the years. I'm sure many rock fans like his stuff but waited for the hits collection to be released and it is a good one at that! The material varies from hard core rock to blues influences and more that display a more diverse musical background and skill set than we knew he had. After playing it through the first time, we hit <Play> again. You probably will too! If you do not have any of his work, then for sure get this collection.
Although not a hardcore STP fan (owning only one CD up until now), I knew I had to acquire this collection. Looking at the songs it, one says to themselves, "I have heard these on the air many times" and if you like me did not buy the albums over the years, then get this. If you are new to the band, this is a great introduction to their material. And of course if you are a longtime fan and never burned your own greatest hits disc, then this is for you as well.
The powerful band that is VH displays great musicianship on this live collection of the best known David Lee Roth era selections! Eddie's guitar work is still as stellar as ever (check-out Eruption!) and Wolfgang's bass work shows how much he studied the material to seamlessly step into the role vacated by Michael Anthony. David's vocals are understandably different (more mature perhaps?) than they sound on the originals from years ago, but that being said, this is a great set and his interaction with the audience shows how he still can own a room! Those of us who have admired VH's work since that first LP (look it up, kids!) will appreciate this live recording for quite some time! A good recording insofar as sound and mix, and a great snapshot of what they sound like live.
There is not much to say about "The River" that has not been said since it's original release. Focusing on this expanded set, highlights include the 10 song disc that would have been a single LP release prior to reconsidering "The River" as a double album. It has three songs that ultimately did not make the final release as well as alternative versions of songs that did get released.
"The River Outtakes" disc is the sort of collection that back in the day, we hardcore fans would hit every legitimate record store, obscure ones, and even people who sold bootlegs out of the trunks of their cars trying to get a hold of unreleased material we knew existed. Many of these appear on the "Tracks" box set, but if you did not purchase that, you'll appreciate their inclusion here!
The documentary disc is illuminating and gives you great insight as to what the songwriter and the band were trying to accomplish with "The River". It is astounding how much writing Bruce was doing from "Darkness on the Edge of Town" through "The River". It still causes me to shake my head as we'd wait 2-4 years for Springsteen to release an album and here he was with 60 to 100 unreleased songs!
Finally, after all those years of seeing "Rosalita" and other limited footage from the legendary ASU concert, it is GREAT to finally see this show and the rehearsal of five songs!
The packaging and the book are also well done! Worth every penny! What they have done with the special releases of "Born to Run", "Darkness", and now "The Ties That Bind - The River" is fantastic and much appreciated!
Many of my fellow Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler solo fans had made comments that they were worried this might be another CD in the recent line of his material that might seem repetitive but I am glad to say (and they agree) that it is not!
The music on "Tracker" is very good as I too felt that his last few albums had not necessarily been "in a rut", but left me wondering things like, "Only one up-beat song on the CD? Really?" but of course I read how he had the life changing/almost killed moment where he realized Rock 'n' Roll may not be the lifestyle he wanted to stick with. Like Neal Peart of Rush having his wife pass away and taking the equivalent of a sabbatical/going off for a year riding his bike all over the world. It seemed to me Mark was no longer enjoying letting fingers wander over the frets and partially lost the ability to happily explore, fell into a quiet country tinged/play my metal guitar introspective vein - which I get, but I hoped his pendulum would eventually swing back to the middle. We all know Dire Straits is "done" and the stadium rock juggernaught days are passed, but just like Eric Clapton... sometimes you gotta' let that guitar ring, Mark! On "Tracker" you get a great collection of his multiple styles and ability to write music that perfectly fits the lyrics and mood of each song. This is a very satisfying collection of new material and a return to what seems a centered Mr. K! I recommend buying the set with bonus tracks. I am very happy to have this new material.
A couple of good, long time Eagles and Don Henley solo fans/friends of mine said they purchased the CD but were still adjusting to the country theme and feel of the album finding it different than they had expected. I responded...
Henley's new CD; I approached it as it was heavily described down here in L.A. as his tribute to his hometown county and country themed, so I rather expected it. Remember, when he did his first solo albums how we thought "Dirty Laundry" (media commentary) or "All She Wants to do is Dance" (U.S. involvement in Central America/political)... "Now that's quite a bit of a departure from The Eagles!"; so I went into this one expecting something different. Knowing Don has a lot to do with the Country Rock aspect of the Eagles since Glen is the Detroit influence on the band, it was not illogical to expect the country theme of this collection. The artists he has chosen to partner with on this project all fit the songs they were asked to perform on but with tongue planted firmly in cheek; we all know the stories of Stevie Nicks and Patti Smythe that when working duets with Don - he was a taskmaster and some songs took months and numerous "takes" to complete because he is a perfectionist. So we should therefore be happy this is out now instead of in five years! Play it twice and you will get it and unlike today's "A.D.D." generation; please read the lyrics booklet! Thanks for the new album, Don!
Upon placing the CD in the player and pressing <PLAY> you will immediately recognize the distinctive sound and riffs that Collective Soul are known for. This is quite apparent on the first three songs back-to-back-to-back ("This", "Hurricane", and "Exposed"). A respite follows with some softer material/mid-tempo (for them) but the entire CD reads like any of their past works with some fine material here. Track 8 "Am I Getting Through" has that classic Collective Soul punch and track 10 "Tradition" is a power ballad with production and sound that is not unlike classic U2, but make no mistake it is CS and not U2! Any CS fan waiting for a new CD will be quite pleased.
Long known as a classic live rock performance, getting to own it is a treat because there are 16 wonderful performances here and many are the greatest hits done live (who does not like that idea?) with the flourishes and improvisation a live performance by a true innovator like Hendrix can supply, but also included are some lesser known songs like "Room Full of Mirrors" that many FM radio listeners were first exposed to when The Pretenders covered it on their "Get Close" album in 1986. It was fascinating to see the new found interest in that song and some other Hendrix material at the time that I believe lead to Jimi's family and the estate taking interest in the idea of producing posthumous releases. Glad they did! Back to this release... as a longtime fan, you will want to add it to your collection. If you are a new fan, introduce yourself to some of the best live rock you will ever experience! Be experienced!
Having attended numerous shows of the Steel Wheels Tour, you wanted to acquire live material form these shows if it was possible. And as shows go, this one is a killer! The stage was monstrous and represented a post-apocalyptic environment. Kieth Richards' guitar work on this tour was among his very best and there are some real treats in the set list including the block of "Paint it Black", "2000 Light Years from Home" and the segue into "Sympathy for the Devil". I am very pleased that the Stones have decided to release some of their old shows. Check out the Los Angeles show from the Inglewood Forum and the Hampton Colosseum show (the first pay per view rock concert) now available as well!

What can you say about these guys that has not already been said? I have had the good fortune to see them live twice and both performances were quite memorable. This collection of works from across their career is a blistering and satisfying demonstration that they still have "it" (whatever that undefined "it" is!). If you have never seen Aerosmith in concert, this is worth your time and money. It is so good that you will find yourself revisiting it and watching it again. I could not be more pleased with this being a fan from their very first album release. KUDOS to the band for a job well done!
