I have purchased Rayovac before but not the Fusion version of their batteries. Very thankful Best Buy carries them as they were exactly what we needed and their shelf life is better than many other brands. We put them to use immediately and are quite satisfied. Thank you.
Sixteen tracks, so you get the best covering 35 years on one CD: 1. Woman of The Ghetto 2. California Soul 3. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy 4. Wade in The Water 5. Liberation Conversation 6. Loving You Was Like a Party 7. The Feeling's Good 8. So Far Away 9. Feel Like Making Love 10. Yu Ma/Go Away Little Boy 11. Rhythm of Love 12. Without You in My Life 13. Look At Me Look At You (We're Flying) 14. Back for More 15. You Bring Out the Best In Me 16. Could It Be You (With Phil Upchurch)
Of course the iconic “California Soul” (brought back by Dodge in a truck commercial) brought many to investigate or come back to this talented artist. Many great, sultry songs, Motown inspired upbeat numbers, nice cover of Carol King’s “So Far Away”, the hits “Woman of the Ghetto”, “Go Away Little Boy” and more. Marlena’s vocal skills are on full display on this collection! Great to get an anthology this good.
Released in 2009, this collection is 18 tracks long! Like “American Idiot” it is broken into three “acts” as another punk-rock or alt-rock opera album. It is just about as good as the aforementioned CD (5 stars) and has some great stories! Having been a big fan of The Who and the rock operas “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia”, this is made in the same approach and is worth it. Many have tried this type of album format and flopped, but not here! Very well done (4.7 stars)! Great job, Green Day! Oh heck; 5 stars!
“Shenanigans” has rare and B-Side songs that appeared on their previous singles. Many have never been performed live by the band. My favorite tracks are “Espionage”, “Scumbag”, “Tired of Waiting for You” (which is a cover of The Kinks song) and “Ha-Ha You're Dead”. The CD cover and inside artwork are great and features a collection of the Green Day albums since “Dookie” and makes me miss full-size album covers. Any serious fan will want this!
“ Nimrod” came out two years after the underrated (in my opinion) “Insomniac”. I have been rediscovering older Green Day after enjoying their “International Superhits”, “Warning”, and “Dookie” for years. This album is a solid effort containing the obviously popular numbers "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" and "Nice Guys Finish Last," "King For A Day" and "Platypus (I Hate You)" ... basically, if you like Green Day's pop-punk/alt-rock sound, then you will like this one! You may want to check out Glen Campbell’s cover of "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" on his 2008 CD entitled “Meet Glen Campbell” for a respectful and different take on this great song.
This 1995 release is Green Day's 4th album overall. It’s “curse” was that it followed the previous hit album "Dookie" and was seen to not have the same jolt that Dookie had. Even though it was released when alternative rock was at the top of popularity in the U.S.A., many felt that this album was not as good as their previous ones.
The difference between them is the lack of a big killer track with the typical Green Day hook/riffs. It is difficult to follow up a popular record like "Dookie." Many bands release amazing first records and never follow them up with anything as good. Many create a great album and then the record company says do another one in 6 to 12 months as if they do not realize the great album may have been pulled from years worth of work and selected from the very best of many songs. A follow-up inevitably disappoints but that being said, if you are a Green Day fan or an Alt Rock fan, I do not think you will be disappointed. It is still a good record even though it was not as popular as others they did to this point.
Comprehensive collection of some of the most important and unique rock songs ever assembled. As the liner notes mention, the unique style and lyrics (as well as make-up and stage antics) inspired a great deal of artists (a long list!) including one Bob Dylan (who on the Rolling Thunder Review Tour donned mascara) quoted as saying, “I think Alice Cooper is an overlooked songwriter”.
In 1970 I am in Junior High (aka: Middle School) and preparing to enter High School. How perfectly timed to drop “I’m Eighteen” on us when we’re approaching that mysterious time between boy and man?! Moving forward as the years roll on questioning things and yourself (Is it My Body), relationships (Under My Wheels, Be My Lover), screaming the anthem “School’s Out” every summer. We all know the feeling of “No More Mr. Nice Guy” but to then get Donovan performing on “Million Dollar Babies” blew us all away! The very risqué “Muscle of Love” (OMG) and then “Only Women Bleed” becomes a big hit. I could go on and on…
This collection, in chronological order, spans his entire career up to “Poison” is a must have but add in that it is only $5.99 and you have one helluva great deal here, thanks to Rhino and Best Buy. If you are a long time fan, of course you’ll want it and if you are new to Alice Cooper then definitely this is a great introduction. And finally, if you have never seen Alice live, DO IT! I have seen him as recently as a couple of years ago and it was awesome and worth every dime! Still an amazing stage show that is not to be missed!
Earlier CDs by Garbage contain songs that have more of the proverbial “hooks” and riffs, many of which become earwigs (can you say “Stupid Girl”?). This collection has a more moody feel to it which is fine by me because it clearly points out how the band and songwriting/vocals have progressed and evolved. The title “Strange Little Birds” is quite appropriate and seems to nail the collection of music here, but strange does not mean inferior or bad! Just don’t expect the more bouncy type of songs and be aware you will want to play it through twice to appreciate it. There are riffs and undertones in this album that are sonically different, but worth the listen especially to the longtime fans. My only complaint is the print size utilized on the lyrics sheet should have been larger. Love to follow along on that initial first listen!
This is a classic “no brainer” purchase! The in store price was only $21.99 for five discs and you cannot beat that! Growing up, most of my friends had every Styx LP and they were played a lot, as the band also was on the popular “Album Rock” oriented FM stations in L.A. like KMET, KLOS, and even KWST, in addition to more pop oriented stations like KIIS. The quieter songs appeared on “The mellow sound of KNX-FM 93.1”. You could not get away from Styx if you wanted to so I never purchased more than “Pieces of Eight” and then sometime later “The Grand Illusion” (on vinyl, of course!). Well to get both of those brilliant albums on CD, and then include “Paradise Theatre” along with “Kilroy Was Here” (I never took a chance on that one at the time… more on that later) and top it off with the 20th Century Masters – Best of Styx Millennium Collection CD is a great package. The latter containing some songs not on the previous four discs. If all you want is the hits, you have that and if you want to dive deeper into the four albums, you have those too. What has not been said that can be about “The Grand Illusion”, “Pieces of Eight”, and “Paradise Theatre”? Must have’s for the serious fan. “Kilroy” on the other hand was met by some hard core fans as too much of a change or left turn from classic Styx at the time with many fans I knew complaining about songs like “Mr. Roboto” being below their standards. The being said, we recently saw Styx on tour in L.A. and they totally nailed every song they played and literally owned the room (which happened to be The Forum; not just a ‘room’)! And the material from “Kilroy” resonated as well as anything they played, so seeing this box set for just over 20 bucks; well thank you Best Buy! The band is very tight, played with much enthusiasm so if you have never seen them and want to, go. You will not be disappointed in them or this box set.
Every great artist produces more material than is going to be immensely popular or be a hit, but many now are going through their back catalogs and releasing some understated gems that hit the cutting room floor. Remembering that LPs were usually 10 songs as opposed to CDs carrying 15 or more, many were left in the vault and never released. This is such a collection, mostly from 1969-1987 with one from 1994, and 1995.
As you listen to this collection, it is interesting to hear the transition of her writing and singing as well. As other reviews stated, nothing that is a top ten single here, but that is not the point. This lets you hear the diamonds in the rough that if polished-up or even reworked a bit would make today's longer CDs instead of being dropped from LPs.
Those of us longtime fans, her inner sleeve liner notes say, "These songs are for you".
