Very Bright, but It's No Ring Light
on August 19, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Because I have been working from home for over a year (due to Covid-19), my company recently mailed me a webcam to increase engagement during online meetings. I have rather dim lighting in my home office and so I thought that this Video Call Vlogging Light would help improve clarity and video quality. The light is certainly bright, but it is uneven and looks unnatural (regardless of the color, or brightness options). Within 10 seconds of my first use, my boss said that I looked like I was telling a scary story around a campfire. (We have a good relationship - don’t worry. I didn’t feel the need to take him to HR.)
The light is okay, but the list of things I don’t like outweighs the usefulness of this tool.
I appreciate that the device charges via USB-C, but I don’t like that the charging port is on the bottom of the device. There is no way to see how much battery power is remaining and because the charging port is on the bottom, it cannot be charged while in use (even if mounted on a tripod).
I like that the remote is held to the bottom with magnets, but there is nowhere to store the remote when the light is in use. It would be nice if the remote could also magnetize to the top (even though the pivot joints would probably be in the way). The remote sensor is also easily blocked which renders the remote useless. My keyboard frequently blocks the sensor, so if I want to adjust lighting while on a call, I have to lift the remote high enough for a line of sight connection to be made.
I hate unfolding the light. The little groves that allow you to grab one of the 3 sections are extremely shallow and difficult to find/grab.
I also hate using the buttons on the light itself. To power on the device (without using the remote) you have to hold down the power button for four seconds. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it makes the device feel extremely unresponsive. For such a simple tool, it is surprisingly awkward to use. When a user picks up the device, they fumble with it every time. The first question is, “How do I unfold this thing?” Then comes, “Why doesn’t the power button work?”
This tool certainly will provide a lot of light, but it is not well balanced, it casts too many shadows, and the color of the lighting is unnatural (in all three modes). Even in my dimly lit office, I simply prefer to go without this vlogging light. Take a look at the attached comparison photos of me in my office for an example of the actual results of this light. If you are a serious vlogger, go with a ring light. If you simply want better lighting in your office, use a brighter bulb - or just get a desk lamp. The results will be just as good.

The Barracuda X is a slim, lightweight headset designed for maximum versatility. It is a 4-in-1 wireless headset, with a USB-C dongle that allows wireless connection to PC, PlayStation, Switch and Android. Incredibly comfortable with swivelling earcups, plush memory foam ear cushions and weighing just under 250g, the Barracuda X is a gamer’s ideal multi-purpose headset for gaming both indoors and on the go.

LOVE the Headset - HATE the Dongle
on August 17, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
While suspiciously similar to the (older and cheaper) Steelseries Arctic 1, Razer’s Barracuda X is a great headset - so long as you are not bothered by the dongle (which is required for the wireless functionality).
The headset is affordable, lightweight, produces balanced sound, is comfortable to wear (even with glasses), very simple to control, has great battery life, a stellar microphone, and is compatible with nearly every device (except for iPhones) - But, I absolutely hate being tied to the dongle. Apparently the Hyperspeed Wireless technology has virtually no latency - which makes it technically better for gaming compared to Bluetooth. Bluetooth, however, is universally compatible with nearly every product that produces audio and it doesn’t require a dongle.
The dongle plugs into a USB-C port, but it is so wide that it blocks the other inputs on a laptop (see attached picture). To solve this issue, Razer has included a USB-A to USB-C extension cable. The added cable does ensure that the dongle doesn’t block other ports, but makes the dongle bulky. I would honestly rather have a Bluetooth connection as it would GREATLY improve the convenience of the Barracuda X.
...Bluetooth headsets are able to connect to multiple devices - which means that while you are gaming, you can also connect to your phone and listen to music, or accept phone calls. With the Barracuda X, you only have a single audio connection - which is really too bad. The headset design is low profile enough that it can actually pass as a pair of stereo headphones - instead of being the average bulky gaming headset that makes the wearer look like an air traffic controller. If the dongle was not required for wireless use, the Barracuda X could be the only headphones I need for home and for travel.
For a headset that is only used primarily in one location, or with one device - I do absolutely recommend the Barracuda X. But, if you want a single headset for multi-use that will travel with you - I believe that a Bluetooth headset is a better option.
- CONS:
- Requires a dongle for wireless functionality
- No Active Noise Cancelation
- Ear cups are rather small
- Ear cups are shallow so ears press against the inside fabric
- No cooling gel used in the padding
- Ear cup padding is not replaceable
- No official iPhone support
- No built in audio controls other than Play/Pause
- No Bluetooth functionality
- Cannot connect to multiple devices at once
- No battery meter / indicator
- 3.5 mm cord has no microphone or controls built in

Enhance Productivity in Every Tool & Application
on August 5, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The Stream Deck is well established as a useful tool for helping to improve the quality and ease of live streaming. But, the utility of the Stream Deck is phenomenal and its usefulness goes far beyond streaming alone. The Stream Deck has the ability to enhance productivity within virtually any program or activity on your computer. With preset icons packs for Premiere Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop - the Stream Deck becomes an absolute necessity for accomplishing tasks, edits, and shortcuts with the quick push of a single button.
I absolutely love the Stream Deck because of its incredible versatility. I am not limited to the 15 buttons, but instead can set up a folder for every task or system that I use. An extremely basic example would be making buttons which show all of the websites you frequent. And, because the buttons are all small LED screens, the image can reflect the icon of the website - or - the button can display a moving GIF Image that represents the task. Push one button and you’re on BestBuy ready to shop. Seriously, after using the Stream Deck I honestly feel as though I have been missing out. I don't know how customizable LED Image buttons haven’t been integrated into every gaming keyboard.
There are, however, a few minor annoyances:
1) The clear plastic buttons are slightly concave and annoyingly reflect light causing a glare that is incredibly distracting.
2) The base/stand does not allow you the option to adjust the angle that the Stream Deck sits. If I could tilt the Stream Deck forwards, or backwards - I would be able to eliminate the glare.
3) While the bottom of the base is coated in rubber - the whole unit slides backwards each time I press one of the buttons on the outer edge.
4) The Stream Deck itself doesn't have any internal memory and runs off of software stored on the computer. This means that if you want to take your shortcut profile with you to a different computer, you will need to go through steps to export your profile and load it onto a new device. It would be much prefered if profiles were saved directly onto the Stream Deck - for a faster and more plug-and-play experience.
5) While basic tasks and shortcuts are easy to add to the various buttons, there is a sizable learning curve that may prevent many users from discovering just how versatile the options are. Many users will save a few shortcuts and never uncover the incredible options available. Elgato doesn't do a very good job of providing tutorials to teach users how to use the tool. Instead users must spend hours on YouTube learning how to put the tool to best use.
I confidently recommend the Stream Deck to everyone. It’s amazing how simple buttons can make using every program easier. One feature that I use incredibly often is one button to launch a game from Steam and a 2nd button moves the game onto my 2nd monitor and resizes to my exact specifications. It’s incredibly convenient to use and now the Stream Deck automates tasks in every program that I use. I can’t wait to add home automation to the stream deck. This tool is incredible!

Good Value for the Average Gamer
on July 29, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
I had high hopes for the HP OMEN Gaming Laptop, and while the computer is quick and mostly capable - its gaming performance could be better. My previous gaming laptop is nearing two years old and is barely meeting specs for newer games. As soon as I would launch a game, the fans would immediately kick on at full power and were so loud that other online players couldn’t hear me. The HP Omen has better performance specs, but when the fans do begin to run - the fans are still rather loud. I received so many complaints during online gameplay that I had to purchase a foam cover for my headset mic (which seems to help reduce the fan noise that is picked up). The bottom of the laptop is designed to ensure appropriate ventilation, but fans can still become fairly noisy.
Thanks to the SSD, the Omen boots up lightning quick - in less than 8 seconds. There is no fingerprint scanner (which is my preferred method for quickly logging in and quickly changing profiles) - and although the Omen has a built in camera, Windows says that it is not able to be used in order to log-in with facial recognition. The laptop also does not have a built in slider to cover the webcam - so users who are concerned with higher levels of privacy will need to find their own way to cover the camera.
The keys are all perfectly flat, but the keyboard is comfortable to use and features tons of awesome LED customization. The OMEN does not have a 10-key which is a bit of a disappointment. I do quite like the oversized trackpad and I appreciate the full sized direction keys. I also love that I am able to open the lid/screen of the laptop without holding down the base of the laptop. The computer has a full sized SD reader and the USB-C port supports DP Alt Mode (meaning you can plug in a USB-C hub that seamlessly links to a 2nd monitor).
The power brick is an absolute beast. Not only is it huge, but it also gets very hot. So hot, in fact, that I felt the need to check the temperature - which measured 135 degrees Fahrenheit (about 15 minutes after I had powered down the computer). Apparently this is fairly normal, but curiously, when I googled the issue - the first hit was a Reddit user who also mentioned having an HP Omen. Just be careful where you set the power brick and don’t be surprised if it is blazing hot when you go to put it in a laptop bag / backpack.
Despite the criticisms listed above, I do believe that the HP Omen offers a good over-all value and strong build quality. The day to day operation is incredibly fast, but I would suggest looking for the newest version of the AMD RYZEN Processor that your budget will allow. I have already found myself lowering game specs to ensure that games run smoothly, so I am not confident that I will be able to play top end games for years to come. But, for the average student, business professional, and basic gamer the HP Omen is a good choice for the price. But, if you are focused only on hardcore gaming, you may need to spend a bit more to get the most current processor for more impressive graphical performance.

Eliminate Wi-Fi Range Anxiety
on July 16, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
There is nothing particularly glamorous about extending your Wi-Fi range, but the ARRIS Mesh System does exactly what it promises by increasing both the speed and distance of your internet connection. Set-up is fairly easy and is completed via a mobile app. I had a few hiccups, but in about 20 minutes - most will be up and running - even if they are not particularly tech savvy. Interestingly, both Wi-Fi extenders are exactly the same unit - even though only one will be plugged into your modem or router. (This is probably so that both of them can be directly wired into your network if you have multiple connections in your house.)
The app has you name a new Wi-Fi network and then allows the user to see which devices are connected and test their speed. If you don’t recognize a device, the app makes it easy to block. I don’t personally get much use out of the app because it never seems to present accurate information regarding how many devices are connected - even when they are actively using the internet. I also don’t like that the light on the device doesn’t signal when there is a problem with the Wi-Fi connection. If the Wi-Fi connection is completely lost - the towers still show a happy blue ring around the base and the modem must be reset.
For the millions of people using Comcast Xfinity Modem/Router, the ARRIS SURFboard System will boost your speed and extend your wireless range. It may also save you money because you do not need to pay to rent a router. As long as you have a modem, the SURFboard Max will act as your router. Thanks to this mesh network, I am now able to access my Wi-Fi in every corner of my house as well as in my driveway and in my back patio which is surprisingly convenient.
Extending your Wi-Fi may not be exciting, but it is a helpful tool that is a great convenience.

Impressive Features at a Fair Price
on July 16, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The 2nd generation of the RIG 500 PRO HX has maintained its excellent price point while improving in almost every area. While the headset is still rather bulky, it is lightweight and can adjust to fit any sized head - making it comfortable for both kids and adults. The earcups are smaller than most other headsets and they press softly on the ears - instead of surrounding the ear. They are comfortable for several hours of gaming, but because they do not use cooling gel or foam - eventually they can begin to feel hot. But, even wearing them with glasses is surprisingly comfortable.
The metal frame gives them a quality feel, but none of the cables are removable or replaceable - so a certain level of care should be placed on how they are stored and used. The volume control has been moved to a mid cord remote that is easy to locate mid game and even allows the user to lock the volume at max volume.
The audio quality is truly impressive - especially when considering their low cost. The 50mm drivers produce an impressive low end sound and they truly produce an immersive sound that helps gamers locate the position of enemies with directional audio. The sound is less impressive at the high end, but still produces audio that will please all except for the most strict audiofiles. The microphone quickly flips up to mute, or can fold down and bend into any shape - holding the required position without issues. The microphone can also be easily removed if the user wants to use them for music on the go.
For the budget conscious - the RIG 500 PRO HX is truly a fantastic choice. Because the connection is a standard 3.5 mm jack - the headset can be used with any device Xbox, Playstation, Switch, PC, Smartphones, etc. Just plug them in and you’re set. Low price, simple to use, comfortable, with great sound. I strongly recommend them to any gamer who wants great sound, but doesn’t want to break the bank.
PROS:
+ Fits all head sizes (great for both kids and adults)
+ Automatically sizes comfortably to the top of the head
+ 3.5mm plug has an angled shape that makes it easy to grip even when plugged in next to other USB peripherals (on PC)
+ This Gen 2 version no longer has the awkward volume dial at the base of the 3.5 mm plug
+ Microphone easily and conveniently bends to any shape and holds its position
+ Microphone is removable making the headset usable for all music / media usage
+ Volume slider is easy to adjust while gaming and can lock in place at max volume
+ Comes with a 2 year subscription to Dolby Atmos on the Xbox
+ Does a good job at blocking ambient noise
Cons:
- Earcups are small and press on the ears (instead of surrounding the ears)
- Earcups do not have cooling gel / foam
- Earcups do not pivot or lie flat
- Does not fold for convenient travel
- No Active Noise Cancelation
- Earcup foam is not removable / replaceable
- Cable is not removable or replaceable
- No audio controls for answering a phone call, or triggering an AI assistant like Siri or Cortana

Both Capable and Convenient
on June 18, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Thanks to this laptop, I am completely sold on the folding 2-in-1 tablet/laptop yoga functionality. Being able to fold the laptop into a tablet is hugely convenient for watching YouTube, or playing games on the couch. And, the ability to fold the laptop backwards into an “A” shape reduces its footprint enough to allow me to watch videos anywhere. It fits where the traditional laptop cannot and it stands up in places where a tablet would need a kickstand (which never works as well as intended). For convenience, this laptop is incredible.
The formfactor is light, thin, easy to hold and carry with only one hand. It truly is the sweet spot where a smartphone, tablet, and laptop all come together into one capable and convenient device.
The solid state drive makes booting up incredibly fast. Seriously, once you experience how quickly it powers on and boots up, you will never go back to a standard hard drive. The extra cost of a Solid State Hard Drive is completely worth it. I also truly love the fingerprint reader that is built into the power button. It is the absolute fastest way to log in and makes it easy for multiple users to access their own account quickly. Unlocking your own profile is almost instant by just lighting resting your finger on the button - it is quite impressive. Not only is scanning a finger quick, but it is much more consistent and reliable when compared to unlocking via facial recognition. Fingerprint scanning has been around for years, but HP & Microsoft really got it right on this laptop.
While this laptop is impressive, I do have a few complaints.
- I really do not like that the up and down arrow keys are half the size of a standard key. The split key makes navigation a bit cumbersome at times.
- The laptop comes with a fair amount of bloatware. The harddrive has plenty of space, but the computer is always popping up messages about updating special software, running HP programs, or signing up for various other features.
- The keys are completely flat (no contour at all)
- The fans are impressively quiet, but the bottom still becomes quite hot
- The metal lid feels quality but attracts fingerprints (see attached pictures)
- The computer brags about AMD RYZEN series 7 and AMD RADEON Graphics, but the fancy foil stickers are just for show and the laptop is not suitable for any substantial gaming. Much of what you’ll find on Steam requires more power than what this laptop can deliver.
...But, it can handle ROBLOX - so my son gives it a pass.
- There are not enough input ports. I appreciate the MicroUSB Card reader, but just 2 USB and 1 USB-C input is simply not enough - Especially as the USB-C port is how the laptop charges.
The one lone USB-C port does allow for the transfer of displayport / video signal, but it is required for the charging. The logical solution is to attach a USB-C hub, but when the Power Cable is attached a hub - the laptop displays error messages about insufficient power. Either the power brick/cord that comes with the laptop should be more powerful, or there should be a separate USB-C port exclusively for charging.
Overall I believe that this laptop offers great value as it is an impressive balance of power, convenience, and affordability. Those who require intense graphical and processing capabilities (for gaming, animation, or video editing) may want to look elsewhere, but the average user will be delighted with the features, functionality and convenience.

Burnt Marshmallows or Bargain Bin Hearing Aids?
on June 18, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
I am extremely disappointed with the JVC Marshmallows. Perhaps the biggest letdown is that (while they put pictures of actual marshmallows on the box) they missed the opportunity to call the black version “Burnt Marshmallows”. Such a clever name might have even redeemed their shortcomings.
Within seconds, I found myself actually hating the memory foam “Marshmallow” tips which I assume inspired the product name. They are stiff, they don’t mold nearly as well as expected, and they have a glossy/slick outside - leading to a poor fit. The marshmallow tips only come in two sizes with a difference so minute it is hard to tell them apart. Luckily, JVC has included the standard (Small, Medium, Large) silicon tips that not only fit well, but nicely isolate the audio.
JVC appears to have done very little design work as both the case and the earbuds are generic, uninspired, and quite bulky. The case is nearly 3 times larger than Airpods and charges via outdated Micro-USB cables. The earbuds themselves look like dollar store hearing aids (and their “trendy color variations” actually include Band-Aid Khaki...to complete the hearing aid aesthetic).
The sound quality is actually quite pleasing and the best feature is the audio passthrough - which uses microphones to enhance outside audio (when placed in “Touch & Talk” mode). But, the controls (other than Play/Pause) are not intuitive and the buttons have so much resistance that the force required is downright uncomfortable.
Sadly, I find no reason to recommend these JVC Marshmallows over the many other affordable Bluetooth earbuds available.
PROS:
+ Good battery life
+ Good wireless range
+ Appropriate sound quality for the size
+ Water resistant
+ Earbuds can be used independently
+ Good passive noise isolation
+ Convenient audio passthrough (when “Touch & Talk” feature is activated)
CONS:
- Bulky earbuds which are not contoured to fit the ear
- Charging Case is large and does not fit well in a pocket
- Charges via outdated Micro-USB connector
- “Marshmallow” Memory Foam Tips are too rigid and too slippery to fit well
- No touch controls
- Controls are not intuitive
- Buttons must be pressed with uncomfortable force to be responsive
- No active noise cancellation

Good Comfort & Ease of Use
on June 15, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
In my experience, JLabs Audio always does an impressive job producing headphones that are comfortable, convenient, and safe for kids to use. My son has been using the JBuddies Play Gaming Headset, but now that he spends hours a day wearing headphones due to remote learning (Thanks COVID), he needed something more comfortable than the on-ear design of the gaming headset.
The JBuddies Pro are wired and do not have Bluetooth functionality (like their gaming counterpart), but they do have a larger earcup that fits over the entire ear - making them more comfortable - especially for those with glasses. JLabs advertises the headset for kids 8 and up, but I can confirm they work well for ages 6 to adult (as I have worn them comfortably). There is almost no inward pressure from the headband. While this makes them more comfortable for long periods, it does also mean that they do not block out much ambient noise.
Just as with the gaming headset, both earcups fold inward to decrease their size for travel - although they do not come with any travel bag or case. The hinges are thick plastic which seem durable - but, the metal which holds the earcups to the headband could easily bend if they get crushed inside of a backpack, or sat on during travel.
I like the JBuddies Pro because I find great security in knowing that the volume cannot get above 85db. My son will often crank the volume up, so I personally don’t allow him to use any headphones that don’t limit the volume. It is refreshing to know that his ears are safe with the JBuddies.
For those who are a bit older, or need the volume just slightly louder, there is a hidden switch (on the inside of the right earcup - under the blue fabric) that will allow the max volume to reach 95db. Thankfully the switch is so well hidden that nobody would ever accidentally find it.
My son pointed out that the headphones do not have either a volume knob or the ability to mute (which would be useful for online chats). Luckily the pinhole microphone on the cable works well and he has had no major issues using them for his online classes.
For comfort and ease of use, the JBuddies Pro is the way to go.
If your kid wants Bluetooth functionality and a boom style mic, go with the JBuddies Play Gaming Headset.

Bluetooth on a Boat or by the Pool

The Soundcore Select Pro is a convenient little Bluetooth boombox. Thanks to the rubberized handle and the waterproof rating - it can truly go anywhere. Anker brags that the speaker floats, but be aware that it does so with the speakers facing down into the water - so, It cannot be heard AT ALL while floating. It’s best to keep it out of the water, but it’s nice to know the speaker will not be lost if it falls into the pool, or gets knocked off of a boat.
The audio quality is good and the volume is sufficient for using outdoors (at a moderate range). The audio sounds slightly hollow and airy, but by adjusting the equalizer (within the app) quality can be improved. The bass boost is impressive indoors, but is understandably lost a bit when outside in a more open and expansive environment.
While the speaker is convenient, I feel as though Anker missed the mark on a lot of finer points. For example, the controls are confusing and without reading the instructions, nobody would know how to change tracks. Some of the buttons are illuminated, but not the buttons that are used most often (play/pause, volume up/down, track change). There is no NFC pairing, no auxiliary input, no radio function, and no internal memory or memory card slot.
For the most basic Bluetooth audio functionality, the speaker is quite good. But without a phone nearby, the speaker becomes useless. The speaker can be linked together in a chain of 100 speakers, but they cannot be paired or grouped in a way to play stereo sound (meaning that you cannot have one speaker play right audio while the other plays left).
If you want to take your Bluetooth speaker near water, this is the speaker for you. But, if you don’t care about taking the speaker on the go, this speaker doesn’t really stand out from the myriad of other Bluetooth speakers available.
CONS:
- No auxiliary input
- No NFC (Near Field Communication Pairing)
- No radio function
- No internal memory
- No memory card slot
- No battery indicator
- Confusing Controls
- Not all buttons are illuminated
- Paired speakers do not function in stereo (all speakers play identical sound)
- Floats with speakers facing down into the water (which means music cannot be heard at all)
PROS:
+ Sufficient Volume for outdoor listening
+ Good audio quality
+ Decent Bass (especially for the compact size of the speaker)
+ Waterproof
+ Floats
+ Equalizer available within App
+ Cool LED light effects
+ Light weight
+ Great battery life
+ Internal battery charges via USB-C Input
+ Can charge other devices via USB-A output
+ Link up to 100 speakers together
+ Rubber feet keep the speaker in place and ensure it doesn’t scratch any surface it may be sitting on
+ Mobile App is not required for use

From Work to Workout.™ Comfortable, sweat-proof earbuds that work from the office to the gym. Set features secure-fit earbuds and powerful audio that gets you moving. The Set in-ear sport headphones let you manage calls and audio with the in-line remote and microphone and come with the enhanced bass that Skullcandy products are known for.

Are you able to use these to receive FM radio signals on your cell phone (in my case Samsung Note20 Ultra) without using data as previous cell phones could use stereo jacked wired headphones (as the antenna)?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra does not have a built in radio tuner. This means that you will need to use a data connection in order to listen to the radio.
