Portable and Powerful!
on December 1, 2021

This Anker Wall Charger is both portable and powerful - which is really the best of both worlds. Not only is the physical size small and compact, but the prongs fold into the side reducing its footprint even further - ensuring it does not get damaged while stuffed into luggage or a laptop bag.
The 25W of power means that my wife is able to greatly increase her phone’s power in just a few minutes before she heads out the door. When she plugs in her Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, the screen literally says “Super Fast Charging”. My Galaxy Note 8 also charges faster than with any other charger I have used. The charging speed is quite impressive.
Be aware that the charging brick only has a single USB-C port. You will not be able to use all of the old USB-A to Micro USB or USB-A to USB-C cables that you have lying around. But, this incredibly small wall charger is absolutely fantastic as it is able to charge at the absolute maximum speed. I recommend it to all Samsung users without any hesitation.

Jabra Elite 7 Pro true wireless earbuds have MultiSensor Voice™ technology, which combines 4 powerful microphones, an advanced Voice Pick Up (VPU) sensor in each Bluetooth earbud, and unique Jabra algorithms. Automatically activating when it’s windy, Jabra MultiSensor Voice™ uses bone conduction technology to transmit your voice through vibrations in your jaw, for wind noise cancellation and clear calls anywhere. Thanks to the adjustable Active Noise Cancellation, the ultra-compact earphones with rich and powerful sound lets you fully immerse yourself in your music. Multipoint connects to 2 devices at once, lets you seamlessly switch between devices, and is available as a firmware update via the Jabra Sound+ app. Also test your hearing in the Jabra Sound+ app, and tailor your music to suit your individual hearing profile. Hear your surroundings while on a call with the HearThrough technology - use left or right earbud alone with Bluetooth Mono Mode - Each offers up to 8 hours battery and 30 hours with the case.

Good, but features may not justify premium price
on November 17, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The Jabra Elite 7 Pro are a quality set of earbuds, but for the premium price - they have surprisingly weak Active Noise Cancellation. Most of the noise isolation actually comes from the seal created by the rubber tips. The level of ANC is adjustable within the Jabra Mobile App, but any setting less than Maximum simply isn’t worth using.
Also disappointing is the design which feels generic and uninspired. There is no special shape or ergonomic design - instead Jabra has gone with the generic jellybean shape that relies solely on the rubber tip to generate enough pressure to stay in place. Luckily, the single button on each earbud is easy to activate with a light touch that doesn’t push the earbuds uncomfortably into the ear canal. Controls are much easier to use than most other earbuds I have tested.
Call quality is better than average, although the ANC functionality doesn’t appear to successfully eliminate much background noise for the caller. The best feature, in my opinion, is the Hearthrough feature. When activated, it uses the microphones to enhance the sound coming from the environment. I am able to quickly activate the feature with a single button press and then have an effortless conversation without removing either earbud. Hearthrough is much more helpful than I ever expected and allows the earbuds to be used in any environment. When taking my dog on walks, or when riding my bike I have been using bone-conduction earphones so that I can still be aware of my surroundings, but this audio passthrough feature works even better as I can adjust the volume to have improved hearing when needed - improving safety and convenience.
Battery life is quite good, but without the Mobile App the headphones only toggle between ANC and Hearthrough - both which use extra power. Battery life could be improved further if only ANC was easier to turn off with the buttons on the earbuds. And because ANC isn’t very impressive, it doesn’t need to be used often.
I appreciate that the case charges with USB-C, but for the price - the case should have the ability to charge wirelessly. The case can also be difficult to open as it is perfectly smooth with no grove or texture along the seam where it opens.
My final disappointment is that the Elite 7 Pro is only able to connect to a single Bluetooth device at a time. The ability to connect to my laptop and my phone at the same time would be incredibly convenient and would have increased their usage (and their rating).
If the Elite 7 Pro was less expensive, I would have ranked it 4 stars - as they truly are good earbuds with balanced audio. But, at such a premium price point, they do little to stand out from the myriad of other Bluetooth earbuds. At this price, they should really feature wireless charging, be able to connect to multiple sources simultaneously, and have more polished and effective ANC.

Finally. A robot vacuum you can rely on to get the job done. The Roomba j7 robot vacuum packs 10x the power-lifting suction and comes with unique intelligence to avoid cords and pet waste. It even understands times when you’re home and seasons when more cleaning may be needed. Compared to the Roomba 600 series cleaning system.

Improved Obstacle Avoidance with Excellent Suction
on November 9, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The Roomba series of robot vacuums are absolutely incredible. iRobot does a great job at continuing to innovate and offer new features that truly make updated versions of the Roomba worth investing in. This new Roomba J7 moves the camera from the top of the vacuum down onto the front (with an added light). Now the vacuum can see what is directly in front of the device so that it can better avoid obstacles - specifically cords and pet waste (i.e. poop). iRobot is so confident that the new Roomba will avoid pet poop that it will completely replace the vacuum if it does roll over pet poop within the first year.
I have found that that J7 does do a better job at avoiding cords and cables, but it still commonly sucks up shoe laces and ultimately drags a shoe around my house until eventually it powers down. Because the camera is on the front of the Roomba, it no longer needs to bump into everything before it knows that it should turn. It does continue to lightly tap obstacles such as chair legs, but it does seem to navigate more efficiently.
Ultimately the Roomba is all about convenience - and iRobot has made cleaning incredibly easy. The Roomba maps out the entire floor after 2 or 3 trips around the house. You are then able to draw boundaries within the app to create rooms which you can then name. Once rooms are named, you can pair with Amazon Alexa and then simply ask her to vacuum a specific room - and off it goes - cleaning that specific space and then returning to its charging base. Or, simply set up a schedule of when you want the Roomba to run and let your house be cleaned automatically!
The user is supposed to be able to control the roomba remotely from the app, but I have been having difficulty with this feature. I can log into the app and tell the Roomba to start a new job, but the app will quickly time out and tell me that the Roomba is ready to start a new job (as opposed to actually off doing the task I selected). When I return home, the Roomba has indeed attempted to complete the task, but is often stuck on a shoe or backed into a corner. Because the app didn’t know that the Roomba was working on the task, I get no error notifications like I would with my Roomba S9.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend the J7 to anybody who is generally tidy. If floors are frequently cluttered, the roomba will still manage to get stuck - on kid’s clothes, toys, a towel used to wipe a pet’s feet, etc. But, the suction combined with the dual rollers does a spectacular job at cleaning both carpet and hardwood floors. I can literally walk into a room and feel how clean the floor is beneath my feet. And both the J7 and S9 impressively transition seamlessly between hardwood and carpets. Surprisingly the J7 can even clean rugs without getting caught on the corners. To roomba is mostly about convenience, but it truly does a good job and you will be amazed at how much gathers in the dust bin.
Also worth noting, I believe that it is absolutely worth the extra money to get the Clean Base that can empty the dustbin on its own. The onboard dust bin is quite small and fills incredibly quickly. Roomba cleaning can be fully automated, but if the dust bin is full (which it will be after nearly every job) then it will not actually be able to clean to its full potential. With the Clean Base, the onboard dustbin will be sucked empty allowing the Roomba to continually clean without any intervention needed.

Quite Good, But Overpriced
on November 3, 2021

Razer has done a great job with the Wolverine V2 Chroma wired controller. The controller is lightweight, has a nice texturized rubber over the grips, excellent tactile feedback on all buttons, great trigger locks, interchangeable thumb-sticks, 6 extra programmable buttons, and a killer design that looks amazing thanks to the customizable RGB strips which run down each edge framing the body of the controller.
At first the extra 4 programmable buttons on the rear seem awkwardly placed. But once grip is adjusted, all four buttons are reachable and actually quite usable. I would have liked for them to be rubberized, or have more texture - but, surprisingly my fingers don’t slip off of them. Even with small hands, I am able to rest my fingertips nicely on the extra buttons. And, because they require actual pressure to actuate, they don’t get accidentally pressed (like the paddles on the Xbox Elite Controllers often do).
Interestingly, the Wolverine has two extra bumper-style buttons (which they call M1 and M2). Because most users must modify their grip to reach the back 4 paddle buttons, left & right triggers must be pulled with the very middle of the pointer fingers - this makes M1 & M2 the only reachable option and therefore almost assuredly used a replacement for the Left & Right bumpers (which can no longer be comfortably reached with trigger fingers).
****See attached pictures for examples of how the controller must be gripped in order to reach all of the extra buttons****
The menu and view buttons have been moved to a higher position which looks good visually, but I find it incredibly difficult to use my left thumb to press the View button. In the new location the thumb has to stretch awkwardly up and over the thumb stick to press View. It is incredibly frustrating and greatly interrupts gameplay (which is otherwise improved by adding so many other customizable buttons within immediate reach - without requiring the player to let go of the thumb-sticks).
The Wolverine V2 Chroma is a wired controller that requires the use of a USB-A to USB-C cable. The included cable has plenty of length, but does not have a breakaway section that would protect your Xbox or Computer if the cable is pulled or tripped on. For me this is a HUGE downside. Wired controllers should ALWAYS feature a breakaway cable.
I am also disappointed that the Wolverine does not come with a case like both version 1 and version 2 of the Xbox Elite Controller. The Wolverine comes with two extra thumb-sticks that will certainly get lost because there is no case to store them in. This is an expensive controller. It would be nice to be able to protect it while being carried in a backpack.
The Wolverine V2 Chroma is a great controller, but until the price drops by a decent margin, I just can’t recommend it over the Xbox Elite 2. For just an additional $30, the Elite V2
has wireless Bluetooth functionality, better paddle & button layout, 6 thumbstick options, two d-pad options, a rechargeable battery, and a carrying case that holds all accessories and doubles as a battery charger.

Powerful, but Pricey
on November 2, 2021

The Hypervolt 2 is a quality Percussion Massager, but it does little to stand out from the myriad of other percussion devices on the market. The Bluetooth app connection is a novel idea that impresses at first, but it is an unnecessary addition that helps to drive up the price far beyond what is necessary.
I appreciate that the Hyperice App includes video guides which demonstrate proper use, but the automated Bluetooth speed/pressure control is nothing more than a novelty that is not truly needed. The mobile app can be useful, but it is difficult to navigate and often errors out. And technically, the Hyperice App can be used by anyone with any percussion massager - so it doesn’t truly add value to the brand.
The Hypervolt 2 has plenty of power, but unfortunately it is not as quiet as I would like. I can complete Peloton rides while my wife watches TV, but using the Hypervolt during my cool down is noticeably distracting. During these COVID times, many of us are working out in close proximity to others and it is important to be aware that this device absolutely will be noticed due to the noise it produces.
The battery life is quite good, but I would much prefer the ability to charge via USB-C as compared to the included 18V A/C Adapter style charger. I also wish that the Hypervolt came with a travel case (instead of only a small pouch for the attachments). At this higher price point, I would expect a case that can keep all accessories, the massager, and the charging cable in one place.
I don’t believe there is anything truly wrong with this Percussion Massager - it is powerful enough to perform as expected and built well enough to last for years - I just don’t see a clear justification for the high price. I think that most users will be perfectly satisfied with the Hypervolt 2, I just believe that there are many lower cost options that work just as well (and which also come with a travel case and can be charged with the more convenient USB-C).

Simple, Affordable, and Highly Customizable!
on October 26, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Within 1 month of moving into our new housing development, two houses were broken into and robbed...one while our neighbor was still at home in bed. We quickly added additional locks to all windows and doors, but my family felt it would be wise to invest in a home security system. What caught my eye about SimpliSafe (besides hearing nearly constant podcast advertising) is that there is no contract, the service cost is low, and there are more sensor options than virtually any other DYI Security System. I don’t have to deal with any pushy salesmen. I can purchase a starter system and then add sensors and cameras over time to build a custom system that meets my specific needs and interests.
The system is incredibly simple to setup following the instructions in the mobile app. I was initially worried that the door sensors would not work - as my doors do not close flush with the surrounding trim. But, as long as the two pieces of the sensor are within 2 inches of one another, they work seamlessly. I was quickly able to label each sensor within the app so that I can be notified of which door is open or closed. And, I can set the base station to chime each time one of the doors is opened.
The camera set-up was also impressively easy. I very much appreciate that the interior camera closes the shutter when the alarm is not armed. This provides assurance that nobody is able to view the interior of our house when we are not expecting it. The mobile app makes changing settings an absolute breeze. The app can be slow to load at times, but navigation and changing settings is easy and intuitive.
My complaints are mostly minor. I wish that there were options to change the sound effect for the door chime and I hate that the exterior camera batteries charge via Micro USB instead of USB-C. I also don’t particularly like that the exterior camera is only held to the mount with a magnet. If you put the camera within reach, anybody could reach up and steal the entire camera just by lifting it off of the mount. Typically a security camera would not be installed in a location that can be easily reached, but the exterior camera runs off of batteries that will need to be recharged every 3 to 6 months - so you will need to be able to reach them often to change the battery. The good news is that SimpliSafe sells a solar panel adapter that will keep the external camera charged.
I also don’t like that I can’t get over the perception that the system is reliant on Wi-Fi. The base station does have a Mobile Sim Card and backup battery inside - so cutting the Wi-Fi or power after the alarm is triggered will not prevent the system from alerting the police, but for some reason I am not completely confident that the system can stay fully armed without Wi-Fi. And, I pay extra for video monitoring. If the Wi-Fi is down, the cameras will not work - which may mean that police dispatch is slower than what I am paying for. My research says that SimpliSafe can function without Wi-Fi, but I cannot get over the feeling that communication may not work between all of the sensors and the keypad (or home base) without an internet connection. But, so far I have not experienced any issues.
Overall, I will absolutely be recommending SimpliSafe to family and friends. Because it is so affordable and easy to set up - I think everybody interested in home security should try the system. SimpliSafe offers a 60 day trial where they will reimburse all equipment costs and even pay return shipping. I am aware that I now sound like one of the many podcast advertisements, but I am quite happy with the system. I will definitely be adding more sensors soon. After all, it is the only DYI system that has the option of Internal Cameras, External Cameras, Motions Sensors, Glass Breaking Sensors, Door Sensors, Window Sensors, Water Sensors, Temperature Sensors, Smoke Detectors, Key Fob Remote, Panic Button, and even a Smart Deadbolt and Video Doorbell. Home security truly cannot get more simple than this.

Good Sound Quality. Poor Comfort.
on October 15, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The Life Note 3S earbuds are surprisingly uncomfortable for a product that boasts “SUPERIOR COMFORT” in bold letters right on the front of the box. The earbuds are bulky hard plastic with no rubber tips. Because they are large and rigid they become uncomfortable rather quickly - which very much ruins the listening experience. ...It is quite common to hear people complain about the default apple earbuds because of their hard plastic material and design/shape. Well, the Life Note 3S are just as hard, but are much larger and more awkwardly shaped. ***See the attached pictures for clear examples of how the size and shape compare to Apple Airpods.
I used these Soundcore earbuds for over a week before opening the mobile app and, initially, I absolutely hated the touch controls. Surprisingly, the app genuinely improved the entire wearing, listening, and usability experience. The app shows an animation of how they are to be positioned in the ears and also shows an example of how to use the touch controls. The app screen even has a blue indicator that illuminates when the earbuds sense your touch - teaching the user just how to perfect their use. Thankfully the app also lets the user adjust the function of single tap, double tap, and long presses (for each earbud individually). There are also many preset equalizer options - as well as a custom option - that all clearly make a difference in the audio performance.
The Life Note 3S sounds great both for music and podcasts while call quality is merely acceptable. Though the earbuds feature 4 microphones in total, sadly there is no active noise cancelling mode or audio passthrough - which is a very useful feature that is becoming more and more common in Bluetooth earbuds & headphones. For the price they have a good feature set (great battery life, wireless charging, etc) and they sound truly great, but unfortunately I would hesitate to recommend them due to their low comfort level.

FINALLY! Cafe' quality Iced Coffee at home!
on October 4, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
My wife has gone through 3 different coffee machines in the past year. While she does have a standard style coffee pot that she does like, she has never been able to successfully make satisfying Iced Coffee at home. When I placed this Mr. Coffee Frappe Machine in her “Coffee Corner”, she instantly fell in love.
This single serving coffee maker has completely taken over my wife’s daily coffee routine. She loves that it makes exactly the amount of coffee she wants without any waste. The recipes in the included booklet apparently need to be tweaked to the user’s liking, but she has been blown away. She appreciates that the machine manages to brew the coffee in a way that miraculously doesn’t melt the ice or water down her drink. She also loves that the Frappe blending cycle happens with the push of a single button. She is not left to manually blend or pulsate trying to find the perfect blend. Push one button and the ice is chopped and blended in a system that reaches cafe’ quality frappes.
What I myself have been impressed by is the attention to all of the finer details. The measuring cup fits into the side of the machine so that it doesn’t get lost. Each side of the scoop has an icon indicating if it is for hot or iced coffee. The measurements are engraved in the scoop (eliminating the issue of printed numbers eventually being wiped away). The lid pushes the brew spout into place when closed. The drip tray is actually removable so that everything is easily cleaned. Even the lid of the blender is a measuring cup - and when you put the lid back onto the blender - the leftover flavoring drips into the drink! And when the blender starts, it washes away some of the sticky syrup in the lid.
The only cons are that coffee spurts past the drip tray if you are using a standard mug (as opposed to one of the taller tumblers that comes included), the bottom of the blender cup does not unscrew for easy cleaning, there is no timer to automatically start the brewing process, and the coffee temperature is not as hot as a standard pot - most likely to ensure the ice doesn’t immediately melt.
Sure the machine is just a Magic Bullet Blender connected to a Coffee maker, but it is fun to use, it produces less waste than a Keurig, and it produces excellent coffee, iced coffee, and frappes! For those who only want a single cup of coffee, or those who love iced coffee - this machine is fantastic!

Impressive Value
on September 15, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The GeoBook 120 is quite an impressive value - especially considering that it comes with 1 year of Microsoft 365 Personal which costs $70 on its own. The GeoBook does not have the streamlined simplicity of a Chromebook, but instead manages to provide a more full featured windows experience at an incredibly low cost.
The physical build does feel rather plastic and cheap but it functions well and is truly able to meet the entry level needs of most young students. Researching on the internet, word processing, spreadsheet creation, watching Youtube, using Netflix, Video chat, and even very light gaming all work well. The battery will play video for over 3 hours and will allow over 5 hours of web browsing or word processing.
It is important to note that the GeoBook runs Windows 10 Home in S Mode. This means that only applications from the Microsoft store will download and run on the laptop - which actually improves security of the laptop. The laptop also does NOT have a graphics card, so the GeoBook should NOT be purchased for gaming. BUT, my 7 year old son was thrilled to discover that the computer is able to run Roblox reasonably well.
The GeoBook comes with about 24 gigabytes of remaining harddrive space, but does have a MicroSD slot that allows up to 64 gigs of extra space. The keyboard feels cheep and rather clunky, but works appropriately. The laptop has a built-in camera, but it is only 2MB and it does not have a physical shutter cover to block the camera. If you are concerned about the security of a camera being pointed at your child every time the laptop is open, you may want to buy a 3rd party cover for the webcam. Also, be aware that the video output is Mini HDMI - so you will need a special cable to output the video to a 2nd monitor.
Overall I am impressed with the value of the GeoBook and would definitely recommend it to those who want a low cost, but nearly full featured laptop.

Uncomfortable & Awkward
on September 14, 2021
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Unfortunately, this RIG controller is simply too uncomfortable to use. It feels as though they were trying to merge the Xbox controller with Playstation’s design. The result is awkward, uncomfortable, and neither as good as a standard Xbox controller or Playstation Controller.
The handles are simply too short - leaving nothing for the pinky fingers to rest on (or hold). The coating on the thumbsticks is vaguely rubberized, but much too slippery to keep your thumbs in place. Instead of triggers, the controller uses sharp edged paddles that feel awkward to squeeze. And, worst of all, the “ergonomic shape” of the handles forces each middle finger to press awkwardly against a hard plastic ridge leaving players with red marks on the inside edge of their knuckles. Also frustrating is the button layout. ...To reach the Window/View button, the thumb has to reach up and over the thumbstick which feels unnatural (and often bumps the thumbstick). The Frankenstein design is simply a mess.
There are a few positives worth mentioning. The controller does have a breakaway cable - which is a must for any wired controller. The pressed texture that lines the back is actually better than what Microsoft uses on the newest Xbox Series S/X controllers and the dolby atmos sounds great. Button remapping is a cool addition, but with not a single extra paddle, or button (like what appears on the Elite Controller), I can’t imagine actually finding much of a use for the feature.
Sadly, this is not a controller that I can recommend to anyone - regardless of your hand size.

The Set in-ear sport headphones let you manage calls and audio with the in-line remote and microphone and come with the enhanced bass that Skullcandy products are known for.

Are you able to use these to receive FM radio signals on your cell phone (in my case Samsung Note20 Ultra) without using data as previous cell phones could use stereo jacked wired headphones (as the antenna)?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra does not have a built in radio tuner. This means that you will need to use a data connection in order to listen to the radio.

With this work with any Bluetooth Version?

The Indy wireless earbuds feature Bluetooth 5.0 which is backwards compatible. Keep in mind that the wireless range will match the source of your audio. For Example: If you're actually connected with Bluetooth 4.2, you will only have a wireless range of about 33 feet.
