Excellent sound quality, fit issues for small ears
on February 13, 2018
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
My initial impression is that this is a quality set of earbuds. From the packaging to the presentation, everything about these feels like a quality piece of equipment.
Outside of the fact that they are truly wireless, they are really zero-frills however. The english portion of the manual is all of 4 pages long, there are 3 sets of ear gels, the charging cradle and the earbuds themselves.
Pairing was easy as one would expect of anything bluetooth now-a-days. Simple 1 button to put in pairing mode and find them on your device.
The sound quality is superb. You really get a sense of the bass from these which I would say would be unexpected from devices so small, but it's really quite impressive.
The battery life, volume and range is decent. I had no issues with people I was talking to hearing me on the phone. So all-in-all this is a very solid set of earbuds, if a touch on the bulky side when compared to some other truly wireless buds out there.
So why the 4/5 stars?
Fit is one, if you have smaller ears you'll have a harder time fitting them, they are designed to not only go in the canal like most canal-buds these days, but then the main portion of the earbud also sits inside the flat portion of your ear. If your ears are small, it wont fit in there properly. My wife tried these on and her ears were too small.
Second, and this might be a little nit-picky... the charging cradle is micro USB. In this world of everything moving to USB-C, I dont know why things are still released with micro-USB. USB-C allows for more power throughput for higher charging speed, and it would also mean one less thing requiring one vs the other USB standard. Disappointed that with the trend toward USB-C they chose to use Micro-USB.
Side note about the charging cradle. It's strangely annoying to open.

Easy setup, excellent sound
on December 7, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
This is the first Google Assistant enabled speaker I've yet to use, and the first JBL I've had in a long time, and I have to say, the quality is amazing.
To start with, the setup could not be easier. I installed the Google Home app, turned on the speaker, hit next a whole bunch, it found the speaker and everything was set up with very little hassle. One point to note here is that it does not set up bluetooth at this time. You can either do that by hitting the bluetooth button on top of the speaker or by activating it from inside the app, not annoying just something to be aware of.
The sound quality is great, easily on par with or better than every other portable speaker of its size, especially those pill shaped ones, you know what I mean. It plays all of my music and my audio books with excellent clarity, is not muddy or tinny and provides a great, room filling experience.
The only down side I've even found about this speaker is they chose to have the charging be a micro-usb port instead of USB type-c. Not a big negative, but with everything moving to USB type-C at this time, I figure they should have jumped on the bandwagon. Oh, and they dont include an AC adapter, just a USB-to-micro USB cable for charging. Again, minor annoyances for an otherwise great speaker.
Get this. You will not be disappointed.

Situationally Useful - for the right person
on December 4, 2017

I have to say I was a little apprehensive at the idea of an expensive Chrome OS based laptop. This was my first foray into the 'chromebook' world and it's been an interesting one.
To start off, the machine is superbly built. The specs, feel and design are easily on par with that of any high end ultrabook from any of the major manufacturers, and better than some. The feel of it in your hands is unlike many other devices in that it just 'feels' good. It's made of premium materials that just work well together with a great deal of thought into the design and particularly the portability of the device. It's clear the amount of work that went in to making a premium device.
The overall experience is rather good too. The device is quick as one would expect from specs such as these. The new layout to the Chrome launcher as well as the support of the entire Android play store library gives this device a huge amount of software to pick from out of the gate.
So you may ask, why the 3-star review. My answer is simply this. Chrome OS. For this price, despite the extremely high end feel and excellent hardware of the device, you're still limited to what is essentially a tablet or 'chromebook' experience. It certainly excels at some things, browsing, Android gaming (fortunately it has a touchscreen). But on a productivity level, you'd be far better served by using this same money on a full fledged Windows or MacOS experience. There is just not the software library for high end productivity in Android/Chrome OS that you would see with Windows or MacOS, not to mention development in this area. Again, don't get me wrong, this device really shows that with the backing of Google, there is potential that Chrome OS could eventually make itself a third competitor in this area, but still, at this time, what you gain with this expensive of a device over a half-this-cost Chromebook from a competitor or even a high end Android tablet with detachable keyboard is going to be limited. Outside of that, the speakers leave something to be desired, but honestly in most ultrabook platforms the speakers are not great as there is simply not the room in the chassis of any super mobile platform to have great speakers.
To sum it up, for the right person, this may very well be the ultramobile platform that specific person needs, possibly someone that travels a lot, wants a simple experience and already owns a number of Android devices. It might also work for someone that is less technically savvy and needs the simplified experience. But a productivity device this is not. I will hesitantly say that yes, I would recommend it to someone, provided they knew what they were getting in to in purchasing a Chrome OS based device, especially at this price point.
Positives:
Excellent hardware
Great Battery life
High quality look and feel
High resolution screen
Negatives:
Chrome OS
No fingerprint reader
Poor speakers

Decent vacuum, room for improvement
on November 12, 2017
Posted by: Beradon

As I've come to expect from Hoover, the vacuum itself functions well at daily maintenance and it has a sleek look. Setup and the app could use a bit of help. Setup seemed to have trouble connecting to my WiFi, though once I got through that hurdle it wasn't too bad.
General use is pretty good, it functions on a schedule and keeps the house clean, but again the app leaves much to be desired. It has stability issues, it does not alert when the trap is full or when the vacuum is stuck. Really the app feels like an afterthought. The best you may get out of this device is to not use the app after initial setup and just hit the run button on the vacuum.
I hope some significant updates come down for the app to make this the 'intelligent' vacuum it claims to be.

Great set of wireless security cameras
on November 9, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
The Arlo 2 is an excellent set of security cameras, if a little expensive.
Connectivity and Initial Setup:
The setup is actually quite easy and very literally 'plug and play', though that's a negative as well... The base station REQUIRES a wired connection. In this world of WiFi, I find it hard to believe they could not put a wireless radio in the station to allow for it to be placed in more locations. I understand that the cameras can be, but being that the base station is where the siren is, if you have your router in a closet/basement/etc and have to put the base station there too, who will hear the siren? Obviously we all know that routers should be centrally located in a house to provide optimal WiFi reception, but in all honesty, I can't recall a single time where anyone I know has actually been able to do that.
The camera batteries come with a full charge so there is no need to wait on them to charge for initial setup and use. In addition, the charger uses a micro usb cable of good length so there shouldn't be any difficulties locating this in a useful place.
Once done connecting the base station and waiting for the somewhat lengthy boot up, it then becomes a simple task of installing the app on your phone and progressing through the inital set up phase (syncing cameras, etc). All is very straightforward and I was done in a matter of minutes, with the longest portion being the actual account creation with Netgear.
The app allows for logging in with fingerprint if your device supports it, so that was nice to see.
They give you the option of using the free standard 7-day 5-camera monitoring and cloud storage on initial setup, there are also 2 options for more devices and more length of time. I think in most cases the basic (free) plan is plenty for most home users.
Usage:
Immediately upon setup I was bombarded with notifications for motion sensing, so I had to go back that setting down in the app, again a fairly simple process.
The video quality is phenomenal in daylight, I was very impressed, and while on the same network or on 4G LTE the framerate of the video is excellent. The view angle is good, allowing me to see a very large portion of a 20 ft wide family room from a centrally located fireplace mantle. Audio comes through well and I had no difficulties hearing what my family was doing in the room I had it set up in. The upgrade to 1080p over the previous generation Arlo is a welcome one and looks excellent.
Dark performance was on par with most night-vision capable cameras, which is to say it worked well, but I wasn't blown away.
The siren is extremely loud. I understand that this should go without saying, however in using other similar systems, one of the more common complaints is that the siren is too quiet. I can honestly say in this instance that is not the case.
The battery life is excellent, with intermittent use I've gotten a great deal of life from the batteries, though if you leave the motion sensors and such enabled, I'm sure it will greatly reduce that longevity.
The Amazon Alexa support is cool, and if you have an Echo Show, it allows you to view the cameras from the Echo itself, though unless you're using it for watching a baby sleep, or monitor who is at your front door, this would probably be of limited use.
Bottom Line:
The Netgear Arlo 2 stands out in that the cameras are completely wire-free. The motion sensitivity is good though it does not appear to 'learn', but there are adjustments for that sensitivity. I do think, however, that with the capability of adding more cameras to the unit, this may be one of the easiest ways for multi-point visual and motion security for many people, especially since you can really place the cameras anywhere.
Really my only gripe with this set is the price. When competing against other options in the segment, this is on the higher end, especially when compared to other camera-only systems.

Works, a little obnoxious in setup and function
on October 25, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
I've had my eye on the MyQ smart garage opener for some time, so now that I have it I've found it to be a fairly useful device, if a little annoying to get set up, and very annoying if you're around when you use it.
First, setup... The setup seems straightforward. Connecting it to my garage door opener was quick and easy, worked on the first try... The WiFi portion is a little more annoying... You connect to this device with wifi so you can set it up through the devices web page... A little tip. Be sure to turn off the LTE on your phone (especially if you're using Android) when connected to the device. Since most modern cell phones recognize when they are connected to a WiFi network without internet connection, while they may stay connected, they tend to fallback to their cellular network connection for web addresses. This leads the setup to think it has no connection to your device. Just be sure then when you're finished with the webpage setup portion you turn your LTE back on so you can finish the remainder.
When using the device, opening is no problem, you hit the button, it opens immediately with little fanfare... When closing it, it beeps loudly and obnoxiously for about 10 seconds before it starts to close. I understand the need, in case someone is standing in the way of the door as it closes, just be aware that this is normal behavior, if a bit redundant as all modern garage door openers have door sensors.
A quick note on smart home standards... This device does not support Apple's Homekit, IFTTT or any one of the number of other smart home type standards out there that could make it very useful to function from something like Alexa or Google Home or another smart home device.
Overall it was less annoying to configure and use than many 'smart' devices I've obtained in the past and it will be a useful addition to my home. It would be nice if they added functionality for it to be more useful in this world of cross platform smart home standards.

Good fit, noise canceling could be better
on October 21, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
So this was my first experience with noise canceling earbuds. I've had noise canceling headphones in the past with mixed results, but mostly positive since they tend to cover your whole ear, so in addition to active noise canceling, they have the added benefit of shielding your ears from any additional sound. These.. not so much.
Connecting them was easy and they work fairly well. I paired them with the NFC capability which was a snap, quick and painless, no need for bluetooth codes or anything.
The sound quality is on par with most of the better earbuds I've had without really standing out from the crowd. Not really sure what else to put about that, they are good earbuds without being great. It's cool to be completely wireless though.
The real selling point is the noise canceling, which I found to be passable at best, and it could be that they dont shield your ear from other sound since they are earbuds instead of headphones, but they do an alright job for what they are.
Overall a pretty decent set of earbuds... One final note however... It seems impossible to buy earbuds now-a-days that dont go in the ear canal. By and large I find all canal earbuds to be uncomfortable, but it seems that only the cheap ones come in the traditional earbud style anymore. While these are comfortable, they are still a far cry in comfort from any of the old style non-canal earbuds that used to be the norm. I wish companies would release better versions of those.

Pretty Slick
on October 10, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
I have to say... I love this laptop. They took great ideas and made them into a functional machine.
Initial Impressions:
The packaging had a very high end look and feel with magnetic closures on the inside and separate compartments for the power, documentation and included pen. The laptop was presented to you as you opened it like the holy grail, very well thought out presentation.
Setup:
Setup was quick and easy, I appreciated the thought put into the plastic pen holder that slides into the USB port so there isn't a waste of space or function if you choose not to use the pen. The one downside to the pen holder is that with the pen in the holder it blocks the power button... Kind of an odd thing to do when there is so much open space on the other side of the laptop or even inside the lid.
Setup of Windows started with Cortana speaking and it easily understood my voice commands and completed setup in no time at all. I chose to use the fingerprint reader and it appears to be fairly accurate. The one oddity of setup is that it had me set up a local account instead of using my Microsoft account, and while that's not necessarily a negative thing, it seems as though Lenovo has made certain modifications to the setup process (this includes requesting contact information and registering you for McAfee... more on that later). You're fortunately able to skip giving Lenovo too much information or signing up for email for them to contact you, but the registration portion appears to be unavoidable.
Usage:
This thing is quick. Which shouldn't be a surprise as it has an 8th gen i7 and an SSD drive. The drive itself is lightning fast, achievingg 1.8GBps read and 1.3GBps write speeds, clearly an NVMe drive, which appears to be made by Samsung.
The pen is a nice touch, I can definitely tell it had the many levels of sensitivity that are advertised, however it does require much more pressure to use than I'm used to with other similar devices. This may prevent false clicking and writing that I've experienced in those devices, but I have to wonder about hand fatigue in a long session of writing.
Folding the screen backward is a unique experience with this device, as it, with many previous Lenovo Yoga devices has the watch band hinge which creates a cool aesthetic as well as being functional.
Bloatware:
It comes installed with McAfee as I mentioned before, and it's only valid for 1 month, so I'll be promptly uninstalling that. The Lenovo apps aren't bad, if a little redundant with one another. The Companion app makes sure you have system updates and gets you in contact with support, also displays your serial number and such, while the Settings app again displays your serial number and brings to the front some control panel type options. There is, of course the trial install of Microsoft Office, and strangely enough it has Plex installed. All-in-all it's not too intrusive with the bloat, but more than I'd like, especially the multiple Lenovo apps and McAfee. I considered removing a star for the bloatware, but it's not taking away from the function of the device, it's more just a slight annoyance.
Overall impression:
This thing is pretty sweet. Get passed a bit of bloatware and some extra steps in the setup process and you'll have yourself a very nice machine.

I never knew I needed this...
on October 7, 2017
Posted by: Beradon

I cant say as I'd ever considered getting something like this, but now that I have it, I'm not sure how I enjoyed my wine without it. It makes enjoying the glass or the bottle so much easier, and I dont have to worry about whether it will keep if I dont drink it in time. It's very easy to use and people ask about it when I use it to poor, so it makes for an interesting conversation starter, especially when it comes to the argon gas used to keep the wine preserved. It's really quite ingenious the way it works. The only down side to this is that the argon canisters are quite a lot more expensive than I would have hoped, especially for the limited use they provide. Were they more affordable (or rechargeable) it would easily be a 5 star item.
But really, by the glass or by the bottle, this is something every wine lover should consider.

Pretty cool, with some drawbacks...
on October 3, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
I have to say this is a pretty cool toy, if somewhat expensive...
To start off, I rated this 4 stars for an adult using it, but I'd probably give it 3 for a kid and I'll explain why in a bit.
First, setup is reasonably straightforward, you plug the car in to turn it on for the first time (no on or off switch... odd) and it charges a bit and boots up. You'll hear Lightning McQueen start talking to you when he's ready to go. On your first connect (or two) you will have to download and push an update to the car which takes FOREVER. I had two updates consecutively on separate uses of the car in the same day and they both took quite some time, so be prepared to not play with it for a while when you're first connecting. The voice and sounds on the car are LOUD to start with, and you cannot turn them down until you're done connecting, so with the updates and such you end up with the car talking and revving very loudly until you're able to get in and adjust the volume.
Second, for some reason the app wont let you use the car without location services enabled... I'm not entirely sure why a remote control car needs location services when all it does is connect via bluetooth, seems a little invasive.
Third, driving Lightning takes a bit of getting used to. The app's default controls are like the sphero orb controls which is to say they dont make a whole lot of sense for controlling a car. You can switch them to the standard two-directional option like an RC car in the settings though, so I'd recommend that. The car is MUCH faster than I had anticipated, and while that's fine for me and for most older children, I had intended on giving this to my son, who is a little bit younger. It would be nice if inside the settings there was a throttle threshold so I could keep it at a reasonable pace for not only his age but inside use so it isn't constantly bouncing off the walls at high speed (this was worth removing a star since Cars is a kids movie, why not make the car from the movie a little more user friendly for a child. Sure the price point of this means that many kids wont have it, but any adult buying this will likely let their child use it at some point even if it wasn't FOR the child). I'm worried that the animatronic face is going to break from hitting the walls too much. I'm sure he'll get used to it, but a maximum speed setting would definitely help. There's a couple of one-button touches for it to do some quick tricks which is neat, but again the sphero controls are just annoying to use.
Which brings me to the design of the car itself. The face is a soft rubber to help with the animations of the mouth with Lightning is talking.. Unfortunately the rubber is a little tacky to the touch, which means with it running around on the ground it picks up any sort of stray dust, hair, debris, etc... And it's annoying to clean off.
So overall, the toy is pretty cool, but a couple of tweaks to make it so it's a little more friendly to a younger audience (it is a kids movie after all) would make it that much better.

Multipoint connects to 2 devices at once, lets you seamlessly switch between devices, and is available as a firmware update via the Jabra Sound+ app. Also test your hearing in the Jabra Sound+ app, and tailor your music to suit your individual hearing profile. Hear your surroundings while on a call with the HearThrough technology - use left or right earbud alone with Bluetooth Mono Mode - Each offers up to 8 hours battery and 30 hours with the case.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
