Great Projector
on September 26, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
This is my first projector of any kind for myself, however I had a great deal of experience with DLP projectors at work, and I have to say that this one definitely is impressive.
To start, since this is an LCD projector, you're getting a true 1080p picture unlike the interlaced picture that a DLP provides. The image is crisp and clear, and the brightness is excellent. The lamp of the projector has a 7500 hour life in ECO mode which is quite a lot. The fan is quiet so there's no annoyance during quiet scenes in movies.
As far as inputs is concerned, it has 2xHDMI one of which supports MHL. and a USB port for displaying files.
The throw of the projector is excellent though at a reasonable distance I didn't have a hard time watching on it in a lit room.
Overall it's an excellent projector, I'm really looking forward to getting a whole lot more use out of this.

Another decent entry from Linksys
on September 25, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
I have to say I was fairly interested in this device when I learned it was coming, because due to happenstance, I actually have multiple PCs in my house that support the Killer network prioritization natively, and being able to support that all the way through the network seems as though it would be of significant benefit.
Cosmetically, the router itself is actually quite striking, I quite like the all-black look with the new chassis design for the WRT series routers from Linksys, it's pretty cool looking.
Initial setup is fairly straightforward, following the basic setup for most Linksys devices now. I still am not a fan of the 'big brother' type of setup they push for and went with the local password rather than the linksys account. Outside of that, the vast majority of the options in the device are what you'd find on most mid-range home routers with the exception of the Killer offering... more on that in a minute.
The router has all the basics you could imagine for a home router, with a network map, DHCP reservations, DDNS, scheduling, 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi bands, and a VPN endpoint. There's no great need in covering these functions as they dont deviate from the set capabilities for most home routers and don't really offer any standout features.
The one difference from this is the Killer prioritization engine. Provided you have machines in your network that also have the Killer engine, they can actually connect to and prioritize the traffic from your machine to the router over other traffic, with a lean towards gaming. This really can be adjusted how you want though, as the Killer application allows you to assign priorities based on the application you are running. So far it has been fun to play with, but really the biggest benefit I've seen is that I'm able to prioritize my gaming traffic from my PC over the inundating network utilization caused by my XBox One performing updates. For whatever reason the XBox will routinely saturate my bandwidth to the Internet making it near impossible to game with any great success until it is done. The Killer engine has successfully allowed me to game without compromise even when the Xbox is performing those updates. This is really the first implementation of QOS of any great success that I've seen on a home router... I have seen others with it, but the implementation of it is... strange... at best, really creating a set bandwidth amount that is always available at the expense of all else, rather than truly prioritizing traffic as it comes through. Again, this really is the most benefit to you if you have machines with the Killer engine already on them, though honestly with just a few more steps you can prioritize other traffic as well, even for machines without Killer on them.
The performance of the router is great, I have no issues with coverage or throughput.
Overall this is a pretty decent device, though I wish Linksys would move away from the big brother accounts that they have been pushing with this and all of the rest of their most recent offerings.

This vacuum really sucks
on September 25, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
Well, in most cases, saying something sucks is generally not a good thing... With one rare exception.
I can't say as I've written much in the way of reviews about vacuums, but there are a few things worth noting about this one that make it stand out over most other vacuums.
First, and probably foremost, for people that own vacuums is the suction. This vacuum does very well in picking up everything I've attempted to clean up with it, even having gone back over other areas my older vacuum had just cleaned, it still managed to pull up more. This says great things about the quality of the vacuum in that it leaves my floors even cleaner than my previous vacuum.
Second is the snagless brush... As many people are familiar with, especially if you have family members with long hair, or in the case of this vacuum, pets with long hair, it can wrap around the brush forcing you to have to disassemble the vacuum to cut or pull the hair off of it. So far I've vacuumed a few times and have yet to see any hair wrapping the brush... This is a huge benefit to me as I have multiple family members with long hair and I really dislike having to clean the vacuum a few times a year.
The last thing i'd like to cover is the lift-off functionality. While it seems to be potentially hit or miss depending on the person, I find this to be a very useful capability, especially when trying to get cobwebs on the ceiling, vacuum a couch, or vacuuming stairs. It's lightweight enough to not be annoying and you can take it places where in the past I've found myself either tipping over the main vacuum or just having to use a small handvac (IE: inside the car) that does not have near the suction of a full sized vacuum. The potential for the lift-off is really endless.
Overall this is actually a very nice vacuum and I'd have no problems recommending it to others.

Could be better - limited interoperability
on September 14, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
Having owned quite a few different net accessible cameras and security cameras, I was interested in reviewing the D-Link Omna as it would give another entry into this rapidly growing market at a reasonable price.
My initial impressions of the D-Link Omna 180 is that it has a very clean look, it's smaller than similar platforms without having the popsicle-on-a-stick look like some others. It also has a wider viewing angle than most cameras currently available.
In terms of functionality, it's nice that it's a full 1080p experience and the Apple experience is reasonably well thought out, including having a straightforward setup experience, but it is more limited than other security cameras even in the same price range, particularly in how it detects intrusion. While some do sound and motion, and even others can detect air quality changes, the Omna is limited to motion only.
The 180' viewing angle is nice, but be aware, with such a wide viewing angle, it can actually be very easy to block a portion of your viewable area inadvertently with an object or a wall, so be sure it's someplace with a broad view of the room or area you intend to monitor.
I was somewhat disappointed that it is limited to Apple Homekit at this time. Most other security cameras in the segment are, at the very least, IFTTT capable, if not being fully integrated with Android or even capable of integrating with platforms like Google Home, Samsung Smart Home or Amazon Alexa, so being purely a Homekit device makes it a very niche market device.
Overall it's not a bad device, but it's limitations make it seem like it should be a less expensive device, or they need to broaden its software capabilities so that it appeals to a wider group. I would have a hard time recommending this considering there are other devices out there in very similar price ranges that offer significantly more capabilities without losing anything that this device has to offer.

Easy to use but average results
on August 16, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
from Wisconsin
So we've had this low-oil multicooker/fryer for a little while now and have had a chance to try a few different things with it with mixed results. I will say, however, that the device is extremely easy to use so long as you follow the guidelines in the manual.
The first thing we tried were some onion rings and we followed the instructions from the manual exactly as specified. It called for no oil and no paddle, which I can understand as the paddle would probably break up the onion rings as they started to soften. However, the onion rings themselves came out a bit mushy despite being clearly cooked through and even browned (had we left them in longer they would have burned). They tasted fine, it was just not a desirable result for crisp onion rings that you'd expect out of a fryer.
The second thing we tried were some fries, which called for low oil and to include the paddle. The results were a little bit better, but again still a little on the mushy side despite being cooked through.
Where this cooker really did well however was the banana bread we baked in it. It was baked thoroughly without burning and tasted great. Just be aware that due to the size of the cooking container that it may take a decent amount of batter to give you more than an inch tall banana bread. I can imagine a cake would likely be done very well in this device.
As for other features. The pop out clock that you can take with you is nice, though a little confusing to operate, it appears to have no off button as hitting the button to stop it just starts it with a new time. The clock is completely separate from the appliance and it going off does not stop the cooking, you still need to go shut it off. It is simply held in the side of the device for convenience.
Overall, the device while easy to use is a little average or below average on the cooking results. I'll be trying other things in it, but really unless you're looking to save on the amount of oil you use or consume, this will not give you the results you prefer from a 'fryer'.

Good sound, short cable
on August 2, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
In my PC gaming time, I've owned some extremely high-end headsets but never a 7.1 headset, so I had some high hopes, and for the most part, this did not disappoint.
First, the styling is a bit different than what you'd normally see on a headset, it's cloth covered, which leads me to wonder if it will pick up dirt, oils from hands, etc. a little more easily than a plastic one that could be wiped off.
Second, despite being marketed as a 7.1 surround sound headset, it's a stereo headset with virtual 7.1 surround capabilities through the Logitech Gaming application. The 7.1 surround capabilities only function on a PC when using the Logitech USB dongle. It does an alright job at it, but I imagine a headset with separate drivers would do a better job. This headset does not do 7.1 surround when connected to a console.
Third, the cable is comically short for being a wired PC headset. Interestingly they included a second one to use with phones, but the one they specifically have as a PC headset wire is not longer.
The boom mic is detachable, which I have my reservations about having experienced other headsets with detachable boom mics where that is the single point of failure for the whole system, so I'm hoping this will not be a repeat performance. Admittedly, those were not logitech headsets.
It comes with a nice cloth carry bag and a separate cloth carry bag for the wires, I imagine they have it in mind people will take this with them when they go console gaming.
The sound itself is actually quite good. I get more bass out of this headset than most that I've experienced with the exception of the super-high-end. The logitech gaming application has a 7.1 surround demo which sounds cool and displays what the headset's virtual surround can do for the most part, the bass portion of the demo left me wonder if my face was vibrating. As for outside of that, I did experience the surround in some games if I was paying attention, but it didn't really stand out.
Bottom line, if you want a cool looking stereo headset with virtual surround capabilities, that sounds good and is reasonably comfortable to wear, then this is up your alley. It does a good job at what it does, without being terribly stellar.

Just average
on July 2, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
I'd been looking around for a set of bluetooth headphones that I can use while working out and these seemed to fit the bill. They are compact, lightweight and have a ton of ear gel options to hopefully help them stay in while being active. Unfortunately they just dont live up to what a set of headphones in this price range should be.
To be fair, the headphones are incredibly lightweight and seem to stay where you put them if you have an ear gel that fits you properly. That's kind of where the pros end, and I wouldn't say that if these cost maybe 1/3rd less than they do.
The audio quality is tinny and quiet, even at max volume. With a full seal on my ears with well fitting gels and the volume at max, I am still able to hear my treadmill through them. A bit of a disappointment for me on the quality and volume standpoint.
As for the fit, I'm not too thrilled with how the ear loop is handled, I guess I was expecting it to be a molded piece of plastic, instead it is a flexible part of the wire that you can mold to your ear on your own, no matter what I did it seemed a little loose. On top of that, the extra wire has clips to keep it in check. Seems to be a lot of manual intervention with the fit for something in this price range.
Overall, I'm just not too happy with them. Average fit, average sound, a bit pricey for what you're getting.

Good Robot Vacuum with some issues
on June 8, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
This robotic vacuum has definitely made steps towards making my life easier... with a few exceptions.
The initial setup is relatively easy, especially if you dont care to use some of the more advanced features (such as the Samsung Smart Home app). It's literally plug-and-play to get it to start it's first time... Plug it in, let it charge and hit play on the remote.
That said, there's a few things to keep in mind. First, when positioning the dock, be sure it's someplace fairly centrally located, as when the vacuum is spending its time trying to get back to it, if it cannot see the IR from the dock, it spends a great deal of time bouncing off of walls until it does locate it. Also, be sure the floors are relatively uncluttered or it will hang itself up on things if it can drive up on to them. I'd also recommend doing a good vacuuming with a full size vacuum before configuring this to 'set it and forget it' as the brush gets filled with hair fairly easily and the capture unit inside is relatively small.
If you're looking to use the Samsung Smart Home app, dont bother. It's completely incompatible with Android nougat (7.x) making it unable to locate your wifi network in your house. If you are able to get it to connect using an older mobile platform (I used an IOS device) it still doesn't seem to work as expected. Configuring it with an IOS 10 device I was able to finish the setup, but as soon as it finished, it claimed it was disconnected from the AP and I could not change that even going through setup again... but strangely enough it would still send me messages that it got hooked on something so I could go find it.
As far as how well it vacuums, it seems to do a pretty good job, and being that it would go about its business on a schedule, it should be easy to keep up with regular everyday household dust.
I would recommend this to others, but that recommendation would be more whole-hearted if the app was functional.

Who knew?
on June 6, 2017

Honestly, I've never thought to consider a more expensive coffee grinder. In the past I've always used the cheap ones that have one setting just to get coffee made and get out the door.
Man was I wrong. The options on this allow for such a difference in types and a bolder flavor to my coffee, especially when combined with my new coffee maker that has such options.
If you're in the market for a coffee grinder that has all of the professional options that you usually find in a coffee shop or when grinding your coffee on a commercial grinder, this is definitely the one.
The only downside I would say is that it was a touch more expensive than I'd like.

Excellent Dynamic coffee maker
on June 6, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
This coffee maker has turned out to be much better than I had hoped. I figured, who needs a coffee maker that is this expensive... Apparently I do.
It's a great size and can really go in most places, sure it's a bit larger than a standard drip coffee maker, but surprisingly, not much.
I was surprised at the ease of use, I'm used to espresso and cappuccino machines of the past that are difficult and messy to use. This is easy, a breeze to clean and even allows for multiple options of coffee types (ESE pods and coffee grounds).
To top it all off, the machine looks great in my kitchen next to the rest of my stainless steel appliances. It adds even more class sitting on my countertop and guests want to try it out. I'm not disinclined to let them either, as it is all such a nice experience overall.
I heartily recommend this coffee maker for anyone looking for something a bit more high-end with plenty of options.

Hear your surroundings while on a call with the HearThrough technology - use left or right earbud alone with Bluetooth Mono Mode - Each offers up to 8 hours battery and 30 hours with the case.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Clean those hard-to-reach places in your home with this Shark cordless vacuum. Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.
